Lyle and TJ send you into the weekend by first clearly overreacting at the Matt Brash/Luis Urias injury news (7:27). They then read a batch of the latest 'Ruthless Replies' (34:26). The two of them close up with a follow up to last week's 'Speak Your Mind' (40:52).

[00:01:40] We're gonna do a ton of different stuff on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube Shorts
[00:01:45] at Marine Layer Pod. and be present in person for it. Yeah, I can't wait. I know we've talked about it a little bit over the last few weeks, but for those that may be there in Arizona next week, TJ and I will be there. So I'll be there from the fifth to the 10th. I get there a couple of days before TJ does. The two of us will be there together from the seventh through the 10th. So like we always say, if you guys are there and you see us
[00:03:02] or you wanna flag us down, please, please do.
[00:03:04] We love to talk to people.
[00:03:05] So hopefully we see a bunch of you out there. comfortable, we're older, more mature, we're adults, more like college educated, college graduated adults now with a real platform and connections within the organization with people we know there from media members to players to people on the coaching staff as
[00:04:20] well who know us and know who we are talked about this on the podcast, maybe at some point. I've remembered breaking it up, but it was like, we've had two different experiences. We covered two different teams, two different sets of players, right? Like, so in a nutshell, in a 22nd nutshell, at school in our professional program,
[00:05:42] they would send us out to cover spring training.
[00:05:44] And it's different from the media people
[00:05:46] that are there every day than some college kids I was in the clubhouse during clubhouse hours trying to get a story. He didn't want to give it. He wanted to go hit, but like for like what's going to be the difference now, like you and I have now sat down on this platform and talk to Sam Haggerty and you've talked to Sam Haggerty in person to write where it's like, oh, like a familiar face in front of me, asking me a question. Yeah. Maybe I do have 30 seconds before I go hit to talk to you guys.
[00:07:02] Yeah.
[00:07:03] Dom Gabe sauce, like a bunch of a few of the minor league guys.
[00:07:07] Yeah, exactly. Speaking of spring training, there are some more storylines to come out of Mariner's spring training this week. Are we starting to get concerned with injuries? Yes, yes we're concerned. I mean, if we're going to start with the guy who I think we're going to start with and Matt Brash, how can you not be concerned? Well actually, first let me retract some statements I had on our last show because again, the
[00:08:23] early reports about Matt Brash were it wasn't of this like think of the bullpen strategy that the Mariners have They are gonna want six innings out of their starter Matt brash gets the middle of the order the first time it comes up after The starter comes out and Andre Smunoz gets it the second time. Well now who's getting it the first time?
[00:09:43] Right, oh if if he and August to go on this insane And by the worst, I mean, I am very fearful. We're gonna see a tweet saying he's getting Tommy John. And if that's the case, I hope they don't wait. I think the worst thing about Robbie Ray's injury last year is it was flexor tendon strain for a couple of months before he got Tommy John. And the longer you wait to get Tommy John surgery, which can be a 12 to 18 month recovery for a pitcher,
[00:12:23] well, if you wait two extra months,
[00:12:24] that eats into the next season
[00:12:25] and then potentially the And it sucks. I mean, maybe if he gets the surgery done, or again, let's preface this again. This is all speculation. We're speculating right now. There's not an official word as of time of recording. But if he gets the surgery now, if that's what it ends up being,
[00:13:40] yeah, then you hope he gets back.
[00:13:42] I guess there's a chance he could get on the field for opening day next year.
[00:13:45] It's probably a long shot. like Carlos Vargas, our guy Ty Adcock, Colin Snyder, Jackson Coar, who's gonna start getting meaningful, meaningful innings, right? And this is, I saw the discourse come back up today, which our next subject that we'll talk about here in a second, Isaiah Campbell, when he was traded over to Boston, it's like, well, you know, a promising young Isaiah Campbell
[00:15:02] would be, make people feel a little bit
[00:15:04] more comfortable right now.
[00:15:06] Yeah, I would throw Ty going to be asked to take a much bigger role and throw a bunch of high leverage innings. And look, he can do it. We talked about it with him. He's got the stuff and the results to execute in that role. But I think it's safe to say that every single person, not just Mariner's fan,
[00:16:23] but Mariner's player too would much rather have a healthy Matt Brash and Santos He can absolutely do it. Like the two of us have the utmost confidence that if he's going to throw in high leverage, he can execute beyond belief. He is a really, really good reliever. But I would, I would love to see the like some sort of addition if brash is really going to miss time or that way, look, Gabe can throw in high leverage, but have it be Gabe and
[00:17:40] brash and Munoz and to your point, Ryan Stanek, you might have over pitched him a little bit out of the bullpen in the, in the leverage situations. And he comes back and two bullpens into his spring training the year after banged up already. All right. So I'm going to refute that a little bit because it's not like he got hurt throwing bullpens in the off season. He may, it may have just been a fluke thing. Like, do you
[00:19:02] really think it's because he threw so much, like, you probably come in fresh. You would assume everybody comes in fresh and it's just one or two bullpens that he threw. It just feels like maybe something fluky happened. That is my take. A lot of injuries in general are just fluky. So like, yeah, you're like, you like, sure, like, regardless, Matt brash is not pitching
[00:20:20] right now.
[00:20:21] And that's an issue.
[00:20:22] If we're going to speak about throwing, and we mentioned Isaiah Campbell earlier, the saying, well, you know, I think in the aggregate, Josh Rojas and Luis Arias could match Matt Chapman. I'm not sure I can stand up to that right now after reading some of these reports. I mean, it's a divish that he left him off his projected opening day roster because of how he's currently sits that that's like unacceptable. That can't happen. No, it's not good. It's
[00:21:42] really just no, Josh Rojas, great guy. Not great. Matt Chapman still a free agent. He's still there. Let's, let's come back to him in a minute. We can talk about them. I will say before that, do we want to throw out a couple other options?
[00:23:01] Cause here's, here's what internally the Mariners have right now.
[00:23:05] They have Brian Anderson.
[00:23:05] He's in camp.
[00:24:01] Chavis probably makes more sense.
[00:24:06] And if we're, if I were to put money on it, it would probably end up being one of those two, if I'm going to guess at this point,
[00:24:09] the ice, the ice horse, the ice horse to Seattle as Jared Caravas famously coined
[00:24:14] him. So how do you earn that?
[00:24:16] Do you remember how we earned that nickname?
[00:24:18] Um, I'm going to be honest with you.
[00:24:20] No, but I know Kravis has called on that for a while.
[00:24:23] So listen, if he's coming over to second, him and Bliss platoon at second, Polanco goes and plays third. If Urias is going to miss time. I like that is an option. So yeah, sorry. If you think that Bliss is your best stat in terms of options and he can hit
[00:25:44] lefties, so he'd platoon with Rojas.
[00:25:46] And we know Polanco can play third. he's had a good spring, you'd say, okay, well, we want to get your feet under you at AAA first facing AAA pitchers before you bring up and it's like, oh, it's like 98 with a biting slider on the outside corner and immaculate command. Like, I think we should probably work in a little bit for your own, your own good and give Michael Chavis some more proven Major League option more of a shot at the big league level before Ryan Bliss. However, ifavis is the most likely option, especially if he continues to hit well throughout spring. Now there is still one other option. You kind of alluded to it a couple minutes ago. There is a premier third baseman still sitting out on the free agent market who we have talked about a lot and it's more and more looking like these guys are going to be on short term
[00:28:23] deals. at that as well as an option to play this year at a high rate, go back on the free agent market next year if he feels like it. If not, he can stay where he is. It's like everything that needed to happen for the Mariners to actually have a realistic chance of this is happening. The question is if they are going to jump on it. And the other question I have
[00:29:40] is, I mean, who do we really blame for this. Sorry. Make us a different offer. Otherwise, they're going to sit in free agency into the start of the season. It's a real shame. It's a real shame. It just shows you the fickle nature of free agent
[00:31:01] negotiations. It's like a lot of things in life all about timing and the timing seemed If they are really looking at free agency, still, it makes too much sense for it to be Matt Chapman. And I don't think Matt Chapman is going to get $30 million the way that Cody did. I think Cody is regarded as a much more valuable player at this point than Chapman. So if Chapman was going to get some three year deal for $60 to $65 million, it was an opt out after each year.
[00:32:20] And the first year the Mariners had to pay them somewhere between $15 and $18 million.
[00:32:25] I, I would think long and hard about that because guess what?
[00:33:26] So a couple disappointing stories coming out of spring training this week before we get to ruthless replies Let's hear a word from our friends at simply Seattle

[00:33:46] Okay, let's get to ruthless replies
[00:34:44] one month, mean comment the other month. It's perfect. Balance in life. Yeah. And for all the nice commenters, of course, as we cannot ever state and preach
[00:34:49] enough, like you guys are the best. The fact that you guys like take time to listen to us,
[00:34:53] that you like what we have to say. Like we always, always appreciate it. And believe me,
[00:34:57] like we're not just saying that we don't just let it go by the wayside. We mean it
[00:35:00] from the bottom of our hearts, but the people that have some not so nice things to say,
[00:35:05] we love you guys too. And shout out to you because you're getting recognition here on the pod. That way, Lyle. No. We're not in journalism school anymore, pal. We don't have to be objective. This is two people that are a fan of a team. So yes, like... Well, in all seriousness, obviously we think it's been a good offseason, but yes, we are going to have bias toward our favorite team. Like, spoiler alert.
[00:36:20] So I think your commenter and my first commenter's realistic. Well, I have been told that I like to live in a fantasy land. We know I'm a dreamer, TJ. I'm more the dreamer of this podcast. So yes. Uh, fiction. No. Do I live in a fantasy land sometimes? You can argue. Yeah. The, the, the, certainly a valid point.
[00:37:41] If you were to say that, certainly.
[00:37:44] I do love a good fiction podcast.
[00:37:45] Everyone likes to live outside of taking a shot at the whole community here. They said it's amazing how low the bar has been set by Mariners podcasters. He didn't even specify us. So for our other friends that are in the Mariners community, they're taking a shot at everybody with this one. So take issue. It's personal now. It's personal. OK, next comment we get, it's from TikTok and it says,
[00:39:02] this is in regards to the Mariners bullpen versus Astros bullpen.
[00:39:06] They say, holy shit, I can't stand you guys.
[00:43:00] We're gonna have to find out. I don't know. But a very aggressive comment, like very aggressive. We're just trying to make a case here and someone was being overly aggressive. But you know what we like aggressive. We like direct to the point. Alright, let's get to Speak Your Mind. Okay let's read this out, I'll say that. I would never have thought of that.
[00:43:03] I'm gonna be honest,
[00:43:03] I guess I was trying to think of famous people,
[00:43:06] but with that logic, with the least amount of internet possible because the internet is the ultimate degrees of connection. You can connect with anyone with an internet connection through one degree. Yeah, that's true. That's very true. So are we changing our answers? Is this our new final answer? Are we sticking with what we said last week? I think it has to be. I mean, you could say this person lives in Asia too.
[00:44:21] There are some very remote parts of Asia, but otherwise, I mean, that's the only thing that would be more isolating than what he just described. That's true, and you would have to go to space at such a young age too, and just be up there forever, basically. Right. What would you know, 10 people? Something like that. But even then, I feel like you'd have to grow up, at least go into school at some point, meeting other people who then know other people. I don't know.
[00:45:45] In theory, but people on Earth don't even do that.
[00:46:42] I'm glad it gave people something to think about. Hopefully we can keep sparking ideas from people
[00:46:44] and other things we bring up in the future.
[00:46:45] So I guess we'll see.
[00:46:47] I think that we'll just wrap up,
[00:46:49] just about wrap up this edition
[00:46:51] of the Marine Layer Podcast.
[00:46:52] You guys know the drill.
