[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_03]: And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Layer Podcast, part of the Just Baseball
[00:01:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Podcast Network recording here post game on Monday, April 15th.
[00:01:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm glad the Mariners are actually allowed to win baseball games.
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_00]: We need low stress wins like that way more often.
[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_00]: You know how nice it felt to just sit back, relax and watch that game.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Jorge Polanco hits the home run in the first inning.
[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Tone is set and you just feel your stress levels way down.
[00:01:32] [SPEAKER_00]: More of that, please.
[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_00]: More offense and more low stress wins.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Funny how it works.
[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_03]: You hit the ball hard.
[00:01:40] [SPEAKER_03]: You hit it over the fence.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_03]: You walk a few times.
[00:01:44] [SPEAKER_03]: You chase the starter early.
[00:01:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Win.
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_03]: Amazing.
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Now it's going to come out now like, well, let's keep the receipts on this.
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to come out tomorrow.
[00:01:55] [SPEAKER_03]: That Frankie Montas, who saw his velocity hit the tank today.
[00:01:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm O and B shocked if there's something wrong with Frankie Montas.
[00:02:02] [SPEAKER_03]: His Velo was down.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_03]: He was all over the place and he certainly did not look right.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_03]: He had gotten off to actually a pretty good start this year on the mound for
[00:02:10] [SPEAKER_03]: the Reds.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_03]: It was just terrible today.
[00:02:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Velocity wise, location wise, et cetera.
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to come out tomorrow that something was wrong.
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: He'll go on the I-L.
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Hunter Green is going to come out tomorrow.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_03]: He's healthy.
[00:02:23] [SPEAKER_03]: He throws a hundred and should I am I going to book it here on Monday?
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Fifteen strikes.
[00:02:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, nobody's going to hear this until Wednesday.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_00]: So everybody listening to this podcast.
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_00]: That's why people will have the receipts.
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to know one of two things.
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Number one, if anything actually was medically wrong with Frankie Montas,
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_00]: because if he's injured, I'm sure we'll know by Wednesday.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_00]: And number two, what happens with Hunter Green?
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Here's TJ penciling in 15 strikeouts on Tuesday.
[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm actually glad you did that because now people are going to listen
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_00]: to this on Wednesday as the Mariners win again.
[00:03:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And people are going to say TJ you moron.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_03]: Either TJ knows ball or TJ does not know ball.
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Now, I know many people with lean towards the ladder and they have good
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_03]: reason to not always right.
[00:03:14] [SPEAKER_03]: But I think Hunter Green will be healthy tomorrow.
[00:03:17] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm not convinced Frankie Montas was fully healthy.
[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_03]: That didn't didn't quite look right.
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it did look a little funny.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_00]: The fact that took them 40 plus pictures to get out of the first inning is
[00:03:28] [SPEAKER_00]: a little bit of a red flag guys have bad innings.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But again, he was walking guys left and right, below down.
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_00]: It just didn't look all that clean.
[00:03:38] [SPEAKER_00]: So maybe it truly was about outing, but I think we're going to find out.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_03]: The Mariners kind of needed that though.
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_03]: They like they needed to face someone who just didn't have it.
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: And luckily, luckily they got it.
[00:03:51] [SPEAKER_03]: They did have it because finally, though, as we've seen here in the past week,
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_03]: even though the offense has scuffled outside of Monday,
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_03]: they've gone a full turn through the rotation.
[00:04:01] [SPEAKER_03]: All quality starts plus for a rotation that in their first 12 had three
[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_03]: first 12 starts at three quality starts.
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Now this last full time through the rotation, they've gotten a quality
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_03]: start out of every single guy.
[00:04:14] [SPEAKER_03]: That's more like it.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_03]: That's a big help to winning games.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's funny you sent me the tweet after the after George exited today.
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm looking at it's like, wow, five quality starts in a row.
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm sitting there thinking like, how many of those starts did they win?
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Not enough of them.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_03]: But today was a good start.
[00:04:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they needed that very badly, especially considering Sunday's game
[00:04:37] [SPEAKER_00]: against against the Cubs felt like almost a surefire win.
[00:04:41] [SPEAKER_00]: You look at that on paper.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Luis Castillo going versus a guy that I had literally never heard of.
[00:04:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I would like to think in all seriousness, TJ and I are ball knowers
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and know a lot of baseball.
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I had never heard of the guy that the Cubs threw out on Sunday.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Javier Assad was his name.
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, didn't look like much of an athlete.
[00:05:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Didn't look all that imposing.
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Clearly hadn't thrown a lot of big league innings and he goes out
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and looks like Cy Young.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Meanwhile, the Mariners had a bunch of chances to score
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: on Sunday's game.
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_00]: They grounded into double plays.
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_00]: They just could not push runs across.
[00:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you know what?
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's let's throw Sunday away.
[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to get my blood pressure back up talking about Sunday's game.
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_00]: So let's focus on Monday.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: You're right.
[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: They needed that win very badly.
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_00]: They needed a comfortable win and it seemed to be a morale booster
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_00]: just watching the energy in the dugout here on Monday.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_03]: And we could talk a little bit more about, I would say the aftermath
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: of Sunday's loss and all that.
[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_03]: It'll boil into our second storyline.
[00:05:38] [SPEAKER_03]: But before that, if we're speaking about Monday,
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_03]: let's get to our Mariners storylines.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_03]: Because up first, Jonathan Clause, Mariners number 10 prospect,
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_03]: made his debut here on Monday.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_03]: Kind of a shocking decision.
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_03]: We're on the live stream yesterday.
[00:05:55] [SPEAKER_03]: We hear he's getting the call.
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Our instant reaction was really out of all the guys in AAA.
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_03]: We would have thought it would have been Cade Marlowe
[00:06:06] [SPEAKER_03]: or they would have just brought back Sam Haggerty.
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think Haggerty is healthy yet.
[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why he's not up in this spot.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_03]: But regardless, Clause is up.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_03]: He's made his majorly debut here on Monday.
[00:06:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Got his first big league hit.
[00:06:18] [SPEAKER_03]: He's an elite speed guy.
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got power and he'll walk.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Those are the good traits he's going to bring to the Mariners
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_03]: when he plays here over the coming weeks.
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I would say Samod Taylor is a third option for that week.
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, right. Sorry. Yeah, you're right.
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so like one of those three options we would have
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: figured it was going to be Samod Taylor get called back up.
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Cade Marlowe gets called up or possibly Sam Haggerty.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: But again, as Justin Hollander said on Friday
[00:06:43] [SPEAKER_00]: in his injury update session with the media,
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: he was saying that Haggerty is still working
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: his way back to getting it back.
[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_00]: So, well and behold, it's Jonathan Clause
[00:06:53] [SPEAKER_00]: that gets the call up.
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we were definitely surprised.
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: You're right that he does profile in a lot of ways well.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Drawing walks is certainly a plus.
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_00]: We know the guy's fast.
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to get into that plenty.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_00]: And we know that he does have the potential and ability
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: to really impact this ball club.
[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I was just shocked that this was the guy they called up
[00:07:14] [SPEAKER_00]: because he's still very young, very young.
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_00]: He had played 12 games in AAA
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_00]: and he didn't exactly light the world on fire in AA
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_00]: or in the winter league this past year.
[00:07:26] [SPEAKER_00]: So it felt like he had a little bit more development time
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: that he was going to get under his belt.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_00]: But look, this is what the Mariners have talked about.
[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Right? They say with these young prospects,
[00:07:36] [SPEAKER_00]: not only are they keeping a very close watch on them,
[00:07:39] [SPEAKER_00]: but they say once they get to AA, you're one call away.
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_00]: They clearly don't view AA and AAA as a much,
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_00]: much needed threshold in order to get to the big leagues.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: If they did, Jonathan Clause would still be spending
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_00]: a lot more time in AAA.
[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: But between getting almost a full season of AA
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_00]: under his belt last year, a few games in AAA,
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_00]: time in big league spring training,
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_00]: the Mariners clearly said to themselves, look,
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_00]: he's either going to sink or swim.
[00:08:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's give the guy a chance.
[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_00]: He's accumulated the abats that we wanted to see him accumulate.
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_00]: He's ready.
[00:08:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So the worst case scenario is he performs like a 21 year old
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_03]: would at the big league level.
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_03]: He struggles to hit and then when Sam Haggerty gets healthy,
[00:08:20] [SPEAKER_03]: you and I both guessed yesterday on the live stream,
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_03]: okay, when Sam's healthy, if Clause struggling,
[00:08:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Sam takes a spot.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's a pretty easy one to justify.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Sam has spent plenty of time on the big league roster.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: We think Sam is a big leager.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_03]: He's like a big league bench player.
[00:08:36] [SPEAKER_03]: That's what he does.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_03]: That's his role.
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Sam Haggerty would fill the role that they want Clause to have.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, so Clause is essentially, they're trying to add,
[00:08:44] [SPEAKER_03]: just add some juice, some speed, maybe a little bit.
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_03]: He'll run into one or two perhaps
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_03]: if he can get the barrel on the ball.
[00:08:50] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got that little bit of power in him.
[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_03]: When you have the option to get someone who stole 79 bases
[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_03]: last year in the minor leagues,
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_03]: that's certainly, that's adding like,
[00:09:01] [SPEAKER_03]: it's kind of shaking things up a little bit.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Or it's like this guy, like he's putting the ball in play
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: and then everyone's watching first base.
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Is he going to make there in time?
[00:09:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Is he going to make it?
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: He's going to make it?
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So he didn't really get that opportunity.
[00:09:12] [SPEAKER_03]: His base hit didn't have to beat out today,
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_03]: which was nice to see.
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Congratulations to him on getting that big league hit.
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: But first, like, so he's a 70 grade runner
[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_03]: on the 20 to 80 scale, 70s elite.
[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Not like 80 is the best, but 70 is still elite.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_03]: He stole 79 bags last year, despite only having a 331
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_03]: on base percentage in double A for most of he spent most
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_03]: of his season in double A only had a 330 on base percentage,
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_03]: which is about average and still stole 79 bases.
[00:09:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's not just glaze over that.
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_00]: And you did a good job hitting it, but let's let's really harp on that.
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Seventy nine fucking stolen bases last year, 79.
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_00]: You know how big a deal it was
[00:09:56] [SPEAKER_00]: that Ronald Acuna stole 70?
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Classe stole more bags than Acuna.
[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Seventy nine stolen bases.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00]: That is nuts.
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: You want to talk about fast players.
[00:10:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Jonathan Classe is that he is going to be a force on the base path.
[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_00]: When he gets up, you want to talk about the Mariners wanting
[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and needing juice.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00]: He's going to provide juice.
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_00]: We want to see him sustain it, but he will provide juice.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And he wasn't on base as much as Ronald Acuna was last year.
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Like Ronald Acuna won the MVP.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, he was on base a lot.
[00:10:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Jonathan Classe, I was not.
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_03]: He tore up high A in a handful of games.
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_03]: So the Mariners decided, okay, time for time for double A.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_03]: But when he went to double A, it was only a 94 WRC plus.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_03]: He struck out a little bit too much, but he's able to mitigate his lack
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_03]: of offensive prowess that he had at double A last year by walking 13%
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_03]: of the time, hitting for enough power and stealing all those bags.
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_03]: Right?
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_03]: And that is probably what he will do at the Big Leagues this year.
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_03]: A little more context.
[00:11:02] [SPEAKER_03]: He's only one month older than Jared was when he debuted in 2021.
[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that's how young this guy is.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Just one month older than Jared Kellnick's 2021 debut.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_03]: So expecting him to come up and hit at even a 100 WRC plus level in the
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Big Leagues this year, I would be shocked if he achieved that.
[00:11:21] [SPEAKER_03]: It would be cool to see, but I would be pretty shocked if that's
[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_03]: what Jonathan Classe ends up doing this year.
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_03]: But the chance that he is able to bring some sort of electricity
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_03]: to the base pads and add that extra dimension that they don't really
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: have on this roster.
[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Julio's really fast, but I think the Mariners would be if Jonathan
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Classe is on first base, they'd send him over sending Julio
[00:11:50] [SPEAKER_03]: because he's faster and Julio costs a lot more money.
[00:11:54] [SPEAKER_03]: It is a lot more, the bat at least is more important to them as opposed
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_03]: to like in terms of I guess not getting hurt.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Right?
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Throwback to our season predictions episode where I said Julio
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: was going to go under a stolen base total even though Julio
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_03]: stole a base today.
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to go under a stolen base total because they don't want
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_03]: him running as much and wanting him more healthy at the plate.
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_03]: So if that makes sense, like a little more free for him to steal
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_03]: as opposed to your other best base dealer on the roster.
[00:12:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Here's the other piece of the Classe puzzle as well, because
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_00]: even if it's not Sam Hagerty that replaces him, either if they
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_00]: want to give Sam continued a bats in AAA or they decide he's
[00:12:33] [SPEAKER_00]: going to stay in Tacoma when his rehab stint ends, Dom Kanzon,
[00:12:39] [SPEAKER_00]: it sounds like dodged a pretty major bullet.
[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So there's something we haven't talked about yet on an actual
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: podcast episode.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_00]: We talked about it on the live stream Sunday.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Dom Kanzon crashed into the wall making a catch in Sunday's game.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_00]: He's going on the IL.
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_00]: AC joints brain is what they said in his shoulder.
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_00]: However, they said here on Monday, no structural damage.
[00:12:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't need surgery.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_00]: They said he'll be out at least a couple of weeks.
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Now that could mean the minimum IL stint.
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I should, I certainly wouldn't promise anybody that could be 15 days.
[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I would guess it'll be more like three to four weeks.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_00]: The point there is it doesn't sound overly serious.
[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Like they talked about the solar field sore.
[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_00]: They talked about obviously it was, it was bothering him when he
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_00]: came out of the game yesterday, but it doesn't sound like he
[00:13:26] [SPEAKER_00]: really suffered a major injury.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_00]: So with that being the case, if Dom gets back in three weeks,
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_00]: that may be the whole equation right there.
[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_00]: By that time, they'll either see in three weeks time whether
[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Klasse can handle the big leagues and he's going to stay
[00:13:42] [SPEAKER_00]: and they'll make a roster move somewhere else to get somebody else off
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_00]: the roster if they intend to keep them there.
[00:13:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Or if in three weeks he shows, look, he's 21 years old.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_00]: He can do a lot of things well, but we know he still strikes out at a high
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: rate. He may need to develop a little bit more power and he may
[00:13:56] [SPEAKER_00]: just need more bats in the minor leagues.
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Then he goes back to Tacoma, but this three week timetable may
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_00]: be enough to gauge what they're looking at here for Jonathan Klasse.
[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_03]: This is another interesting thing.
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You know who MLB pipeline comped him to?
[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_03]: Who? Taylor Tramiel.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_03]: That's interesting. Yeah.
[00:14:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Different builds.
[00:14:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Taylor obviously is like a huge human being.
[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Jon Klasse is not.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_03]: He's listed generously at five foot nine, one hundred and fifty pounds.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_03]: I think he might weigh a little bit more now, but he's not a big dude.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_03]: But the hitting profile and the is the same, it seems like.
[00:14:39] [SPEAKER_03]: And the defensive profile as well.
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Klasse is going to be a left fielder primarily or center fielder.
[00:14:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, he's not going to take Julio's rep.
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_03]: So if he goes somewhere, eventually ends up somewhere else in his big league
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_03]: career, he could play.
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_03]: He could play center.
[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He has the speed for center, but he has the arm for for left field.
[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think there's no something else I was going to or if Julio needs
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_00]: a day off like we saw on Sunday, instead of having Luke Rayleigh
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_00]: play center field who can do it, but is better suited for the corners.
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Klasse can slide to center.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And he's better as a left handed, better as a left handed hitter.
[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_03]: So it makes it an easier replacement for Dom Spock.
[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Right. Yeah, exactly.
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, he's this guy's going to provide juice.
[00:15:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to comp him to Terence Gore because I think Klasse's
[00:15:27] [SPEAKER_00]: both floor and ceiling as a player is higher than that.
[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't want to I don't want to set that example.
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: However, the Royals never let that dude hit.
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I swear to I don't think he how many I think you can count
[00:15:39] [SPEAKER_03]: as majorly played appearances on one hand.
[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_00]: That being said, remember how every postseason for multiple years
[00:15:46] [SPEAKER_00]: in a row when Terence Gore would get in the game, people will be like, oh boy,
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_00]: here comes Terence Gore.
[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_00]: This guy is a threat.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_00]: They talk about him like he's going to steal second.
[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_00]: He's going to steal third.
[00:15:57] [SPEAKER_00]: He might steal home.
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what Jonathan Klasse can do on the base pads.
[00:16:01] [SPEAKER_00]: He's that fast.
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_00]: He is like his speed is that good where look at the speed guys
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_00]: on this Mariners roster.
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Tulio, still and more.
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Now there's Jonathan Klasse and he's the fastest of all three.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_00]: So for a team that does lack a little bit of speed, that's certainly going to
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_00]: help.
[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Now you don't just have to rely on two guys to be your speed guys on the base
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_00]: pads.
[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: You've got somebody like Klasse who even if he doesn't play every day
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_00]: and it does sound like the Mariners do intend to play him a lot while
[00:16:28] [SPEAKER_00]: he's up, even the days he's not playing.
[00:16:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Who do you think is getting a call in the late innings in a close
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_00]: game to pinch run without hesitation?
[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be Jonathan Klasse.
[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_03]: How many career hits do you think Terence Gore had?
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I was shocked by this number.
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say it's more than you think he like he did play a little.
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: He did hit a little bit and he also played on some other teams.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what I was talking about with the multiple post seasons in a row,
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_00]: because he spent some time on some other teams and other post seasons
[00:16:53] [SPEAKER_00]: and it was the same narrative.
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like, oh, here comes Terence Gore.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_00]: This guy is about to change the game with his speed.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: However, to answer your question, I'm going to guess 20.
[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_03]: 16 that blew my mind.
[00:17:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I didn't think he had that many hits.
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_03]: 74 career at bats.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Play appearances, I think, actually.
[00:17:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Kind of crazy.
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's not a lot.
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_03]: No, it's not for a guy who had as much name recognition as he did.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you said, not not there to hit.
[00:17:18] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's amazing thing at the strategy of that.
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_03]: It's lucky to have a guy like Klasse, who you feel fine sending to the plate.
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Keeping someone on your roster primarily to steal bases.
[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's it is quite the strategy.
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Like what if you need an extra hitter on your roster?
[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that's the kind of gamble you make.
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's just shows you the kind of value that a guy like Klasse can have.
[00:17:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_00]: But let's make it clear.
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Klasse can hit like to Klasse is not Terence Gore.
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_00]: We're just saying that speed, you could make that comp.
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_00]: His the rest of his profile fills out a lot much better than Gores.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Like Klasse is a good switch hitter.
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_00]: The fact he can hit from both sides of the plate.
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_00]: He has a little bit of pop.
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_00]: He can certainly hit for doubles.
[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_00]: If it all clicks for him this early and I hope it does.
[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be tough, but I hope it does.
[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_00]: That can really change the dynamic of this team a bit.
[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, let's hope so.
[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's hope so.
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's hope like let's hope there was notable changes in the off season.
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_03]: He made after he was done playing in the winter league before he got to Tacoma
[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_03]: that the Mariners thought he took that extra step he needed after double
[00:18:23] [SPEAKER_03]: A last year.
[00:18:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And to be fair, he hit 321 in big league spring training this year.
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_00]: So after that winter league time, hit wall in the spring, hit wall into coma.
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe there is something they saw.
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember what they talked about in camp?
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: They said Jonathan Klasse was one of their most improved players over the off
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_00]: season.
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe we're seeing the results of it now.
[00:18:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe this is why we're seeing the aggressive call up.
[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe something between the end of last season, maybe something between the
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_00]: end of last season and this season really sparked something.
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get a hundred plate appearances in and then we can, we can revisit.
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm down.
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to move on to our second storyline here in just a second.
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Before we do that, let's talk to you guys about who our friends over at
[00:19:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Pagotches pub 85.
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_00]: That's over in Kirkland.
[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Mariners are heating up now aren't they?
[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_00]: They just had a really nice Monday win and because of that, you guys want to
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_00]: watch games.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, you guys are going to be watching games regardless, but it's more
[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_00]: fun to watch when they win.
[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you want to do that, go to a fun spot to go watch those games.
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Head over there.
[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_00]: That's Pagotches pub 85.
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_00]: You can order some great food, some great drinks.
[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_00]: You want to play darts while you watch the game, you want to play pool
[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_00]: while you watch the game.
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_00]: You can do all that stuff.
[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you go during happy hour, get some great drink specials.
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_00]: That includes Monday through Friday, happy hours from two to six PM,
[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: $3 domestic beers, $4 mayonnaise and blue moons, $4 Mac and Jacks, $4
[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Wells and $4 house wine.
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_00]: All of that is over at Pagotches pub 85 in Kirkland.
[00:19:48] [SPEAKER_00]: So our second storyline here, we rode the high with Jonathan Closset.
[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Roller coaster is going to come down a little bit because we do have
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: to talk about the Mariners Superstar Center fielder Julio Rodriguez,
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_00]: who is not off to the hottest start in the world to say the least.
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And it has shown mightily in the first few handfuls of games of the year.
[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Where do we want to start with this?
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Should I just start that entering Monday?
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_03]: You want some context?
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_03]: 10th worst hitter in baseball.
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_03]: Julio Rodriguez to start the season negative point two F war,
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_03]: only Mitch Garver on the team has been worse in terms of wins above replacement
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_03]: from fan graphs.
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_03]: He struck out a third of his played appearances so far.
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_03]: The hot start that the Mariners needed in April also correlated with Julio
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Rodriguez also for the first time in his career, crushing the ball in April.
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_03]: But right now out of all the April sees had this one looks like the worst one.
[00:20:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It does it.
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_03]: The combination of things, the combination of expectations,
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_03]: the combination of hearing how much his approach improved and how like the
[00:20:59] [SPEAKER_03]: monumental step we were expecting and still expect here in the coming months
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_03]: from Julio Rodriguez this season, 40 home runs.
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_03]: Why couldn't he hit 50 home runs?
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: This is the kind of talent this guy has to have him come out and still struggle
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_03]: like this right out of the gate is a little disappointing.
[00:21:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And then it all comes to an end on Sunday where two and a half weeks
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_03]: into the season, the Mariners have to give Julio a mental day off
[00:21:25] [SPEAKER_03]: because he's been so bad.
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_03]: That's and like normally that normally that does not happen until you reach
[00:21:31] [SPEAKER_03]: like June and who is in a midseason slump and he's he's played 80 games
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_03]: in a row and it's like, all right, time to breathe, time to breathe, man.
[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_03]: But it took two and a half weeks for Julio to get that mental day off
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and the day ends with him getting picked off to end the game against the Cubs
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_03]: and essentially wasted an entire mental day off because
[00:21:52] [SPEAKER_03]: he came in the game and made the worst mistake possible.
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So you can't you can't take time off then.
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_03]: So, man, you can't pick a thing that you could say, yeah,
[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_03]: this has been good for Julio in the last two and a half weeks,
[00:22:07] [SPEAKER_03]: besides maybe his defense, but that's really kind of played a back seat
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_03]: to everything else.
[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Where do we dive into this first?
[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_00]: You just kind of I mean, you just gave a good intro to it.
[00:22:19] [SPEAKER_00]: There's numbers we can dive into here, but before we even do that,
[00:22:23] [SPEAKER_00]: I feel like we should just start with I hate to even throw this idea out there,
[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_00]: but is it just the fact that we're going to have to accept
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_00]: he is going to be a slow starter in his career?
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Is this just going to be how it is?
[00:22:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Is it going to be like the way Kyle Seeger was where Seeger
[00:22:39] [SPEAKER_00]: often started slow in April and then picked it up?
[00:22:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Is this who Julio is?
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_03]: I get like maybe he's got a lot of career left.
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_03]: If he rips off the next 10 April's after this and is amazing in April,
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_03]: no one's going to remember these April's.
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_03]: No one at all.
[00:22:55] [SPEAKER_03]: So it's up to Julio to sort of change that narrative, but sure.
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we might just have to accept that.
[00:23:00] [SPEAKER_03]: And then we might just have to accept that as long as he's
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_03]: playing here on the Mariners and as long as the team is built
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_03]: to only go as far as Julio goes, we're going to have to just
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_03]: get used to slow starts, right?
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's easy to overreact in April and it's easy to be down.
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's easy to say, man, this team just doesn't look very good.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Flat out.
[00:23:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Flat out doesn't.
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_03]: It's easy to make that observation when these are the only games
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: we've had to watch so far this season.
[00:23:25] [SPEAKER_03]: Is that something you can get used to?
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't think so.
[00:23:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, we sat here preseason and said this team was better
[00:23:32] [SPEAKER_03]: than last year's team.
[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_03]: And last year's team also stunk in April was right about
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_03]: in the same spot right now, but we're sitting here just as frustrated.
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_03]: We're not saying, oh, yeah, the town will take care of it.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, we're like, we're like, no, there is some issues right now.
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_03]: There's certainly some issues and it's added on with the fact how
[00:23:50] [SPEAKER_03]: important this year is that like, it just doesn't feel like
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_03]: you can waste games like this.
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_03]: There are no wasting games, right?
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_03]: The season at the season ends with the Mariners missing the playoffs.
[00:24:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I don't even want to, I don't want to even think of what
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_03]: that's going to be like because it is going to, it's not going to be pleasant.
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Because there's a lot of things at stake this season.
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_03]: And it all boils back to the fact that this team can only do what Julio does.
[00:24:19] [SPEAKER_03]: And if he's going to struggle in April and the team struggles in April,
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_03]: then good luck calming people down.
[00:24:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we don't have to dive into this too far, but you're right.
[00:24:28] [SPEAKER_00]: If the Mariners really do miss the playoffs this year, we don't know
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_00]: what's going to happen with Jerry DePoto and Scott Service.
[00:24:34] [SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if we're going to see more players speak out.
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have seen year three with the nucleus of this
[00:24:39] [SPEAKER_00]: core and only made the playoffs once.
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_00]: There's going to be some dialogue, obviously down the road, if they
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_00]: really miss the playoffs again, but if we're going to focus here on Julio,
[00:24:48] [SPEAKER_00]: because that's who this segment is about, he may just be a slow starter.
[00:24:52] [SPEAKER_00]: He is very, very clearly pressing right now.
[00:24:54] [SPEAKER_00]: I think he's trying, it's very clear that the offense is struggling.
[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_00]: He's trying to will, will the team's way out of it.
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's, it's he's just, he's probably trying to do too much.
[00:25:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Like, is it fair to say he's probably pressing already?
[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what it looks like.
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_00]: And he's flailing out at a lot of pitches.
[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Like let's just talk about tonight, but on Monday against the Reds.
[00:25:16] [SPEAKER_03]: The Reds play into pitch to Julio this today was inside, inside, inside,
[00:25:20] [SPEAKER_03]: inside. We are going to throw balls either on the inside corner or
[00:25:23] [SPEAKER_03]: well in off the plate.
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_03]: And Julio was consistently swinging at pitches of foot inside off the plate
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_03]: consistently.
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And you can hear Blowers is like, he's just, he's got to stop swinging at those
[00:25:33] [SPEAKER_03]: pitches because it's hard to hit the ball hard when the ball is in that far.
[00:25:38] [SPEAKER_03]: And it just encapsulates how much he's, he's trying to, he's trying to make
[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_03]: good on this slow start by swinging at pitches that maybe look good at start,
[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_03]: but then are like breaking way in like a sinker running in on his hands.
[00:25:50] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's over and over and over again.
[00:25:52] [SPEAKER_03]: And we're waiting for the approach to sort of correct itself and for Julio
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_03]: to step up there and watch more of those pitches in the pitches in off
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_03]: the plate on his hands.
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Just let him go.
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_00]: It's funny you say that sinkers are what have done him in so far small sample
[00:26:09] [SPEAKER_00]: size, not a lot of games to judge off yet, but to judge off the 1617 games
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_00]: the Mariners have played so far.
[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_00]: He's hitting a hundred against sinkers entering Monday's game.
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_00]: He was hitting a hundred against sinkers negative two run value.
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_00]: He's also slugging a hundred against sinkers.
[00:26:27] [SPEAKER_00]: 100.
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Singers are not doing him any favors right now.
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's the breaking stuff too.
[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, his whiff rates on these breaking pitches on sliders.
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_03]: He has a whiff rate of 40%.
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Sweepers 37 and a half cutters 45% change ups 64% and splitters 58%.
[00:26:48] [SPEAKER_03]: Anything slow he can't, he's not touching right now.
[00:26:54] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's funny, even the fastballs, he's not timing up.
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_00]: His timing seems off along with pressing along with the slow start.
[00:27:01] [SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't seem like he's on time yet.
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_00]: We've seen a lot of balls to right field that lasted bad here on Monday.
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_00]: He actually got a cookie late in the game and it was a flyout to right field.
[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_00]: He was just a little bit behind it still.
[00:27:13] [SPEAKER_00]: So even on those fastballs, he's still a little late.
[00:27:16] [SPEAKER_00]: It's weird.
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_00]: He is plus two and run value against fastballs already, but he's not
[00:27:20] [SPEAKER_00]: slugging at all against fastballs.
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_00]: His average is okay.
[00:27:23] [SPEAKER_00]: It's 300 against heaters, no slug.
[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_03]: So it could just be as simple as timing.
[00:27:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It could be it.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_03]: It could be as simple as that.
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: But I'll say between this year and last year, like mechanically stuff looks
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_03]: different, but the approach does not look drastically different in the small
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_03]: sample size.
[00:27:48] [SPEAKER_03]: It can evolve as the season goes along.
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: But use the Mike Trout for example, he used to have a huge problem striking
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_03]: out too much and not walking enough early in his career.
[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_03]: And as his career has gone along, his approach has gotten so good.
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_03]: So, so good.
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_03]: And that's what we hope with Julio because that's kind of player he is.
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: It's not quite there yet because he's still expanding like you said,
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_03]: chasing and not crushing the pitches he should.
[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_03]: He should.
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: It would be a lot easier if that one good pitch to hit each at bat, Julio was
[00:28:21] [SPEAKER_03]: crushing here in the first two and a half weeks.
[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_03]: He's not doing that.
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_03]: The sooner he does that, the sooner this offense can fix itself.
[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_03]: It is going to be really hard as well as Jorge Polanco swinging right now.
[00:28:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It's going to be really hard for this offense to be good without him being
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_03]: good.
[00:28:34] [SPEAKER_03]: Really, really, really difficult.
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_03]: He has to be the best player on this team.
[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Otherwise there's going to be a lot of nights like this weekend where
[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_00]: there's not a lot of run scored.
[00:28:44] [SPEAKER_00]: It's great that Jorge Polanco is starting to hit and let's throw that in by the way.
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Jorge Polanco here on Monday, last seven games, he's OPSing well over 900.
[00:28:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Jorge Polanco is locked in right now, which is awesome to see.
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Mitch Hannigar had a great night.
[00:28:57] [SPEAKER_00]: That's great to see, but you're right.
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Julio has to be the guy.
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I know we're stating the blatantly obvious with that, but he has to be
[00:29:06] [SPEAKER_00]: the guy.
[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_00]: The JP is going to have to hit better.
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Mitch Garber is going to have to hit better.
[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Cal's going to have to hit better, but Julio has to be the guy because
[00:29:13] [SPEAKER_00]: we know this team runs through him.
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And when he goes, you're going to see a lot change.
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_03]: So at least defense has been good.
[00:29:22] [SPEAKER_03]: Hasn't let that affect him.
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: The base running mistake on Sunday was bad, but overall again in the grand
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_03]: scheme of things, not the end of the world, just an inopportune time.
[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Uh, even though that was handled, it was handled kind of strange by Scott,
[00:29:36] [SPEAKER_03]: but in the end the game's over.
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_03]: It's already Monday.
[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_03]: They've already won another baseball game since then.
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_03]: So I think we can move on from that.
[00:29:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I think I don't think with that crazy for him to run in that situation.
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I know we talked about a little bit on the live stream.
[00:29:51] [SPEAKER_03]: Wasn't crazy for him to run, but like avoiding him pinch hitting, but having
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_03]: him run, I know you wanted a fast runner.
[00:29:59] [SPEAKER_03]: I know you wanted a fast runner and again, hindsight to effects this.
[00:30:05] [SPEAKER_03]: The effects this take right now that he's got picked off.
[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_03]: If, but yeah, if people would have rather, I think people would have
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_03]: rather him just hit in that spot, not in that spot.
[00:30:14] [SPEAKER_03]: It would have been.
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:30:17] [SPEAKER_03]: No, I'm confused.
[00:30:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Nevermind.
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Call that out walked right on and they had Julio pinch run for him.
[00:30:23] [SPEAKER_00]: If Luke really hits a ball in the gap, Cal Raleigh gets stuck at third
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_00]: because obviously he's not going first to home or probably not.
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I should say.
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And then the next guy gets out.
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_00]: People are going to be furious that Julio didn't pinch run having your
[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_00]: fastest guy out there to pinch run in a one run game isn't crazy.
[00:30:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that's more than reasonable.
[00:30:39] [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't ask him to play after Dom Kanzon got hurt.
[00:30:41] [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't ask him to hit throughout the game.
[00:30:43] [SPEAKER_00]: They didn't even have him pinch hit late in the game.
[00:30:45] [SPEAKER_00]: They just said, Hey, just run.
[00:30:47] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think anybody thought he was going to get picked off.
[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_00]: It's a pretty reasonable expectation to think, OK, don't let yourself
[00:30:52] [SPEAKER_00]: get picked off and if there's a ball in the gap you run, Raleigh gets out.
[00:30:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Nothing happens anyway, but he got picked off.
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_03]: Here's the last thing we address this on the podcast, but he also
[00:31:01] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't talk to the media after the game.
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Do you feel like he should have?
[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I've been a little back and forth on this.
[00:31:09] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how much there is to say.
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously made a mistake getting picked off.
[00:31:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it speaks for itself that, look, he made a mistake.
[00:31:19] [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't his best moment and he's going to move on.
[00:31:23] [SPEAKER_00]: But there were people that said he should have taken accountability for it.
[00:31:28] [SPEAKER_03]: I think I'm one of those people.
[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_03]: It's like you're the leader of the team.
[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You have to.
[00:31:33] [SPEAKER_03]: You're like Cal would if that was Cal, you think like Cal's.
[00:31:38] [SPEAKER_03]: I think Cal sits and does that, right?
[00:31:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Like in who is going to learn like this.
[00:31:43] [SPEAKER_03]: This is a learning experience for him.
[00:31:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Great. It's always good to learn everyone everywhere
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_03]: in every profession wants to learn as much as they can
[00:31:50] [SPEAKER_03]: because that makes you better at their job.
[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_03]: It just doesn't feel right when the best player on your team
[00:31:56] [SPEAKER_03]: gets picked off to end the game after, you know, a bad two and a half
[00:32:00] [SPEAKER_03]: weeks to start the season and then just goes to media at the end of the game.
[00:32:05] [SPEAKER_03]: This is I'm like, I'm not going to talk today,
[00:32:08] [SPEAKER_03]: which it might you might only need to say one thing.
[00:32:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I made a mistake.
[00:32:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Like here's what I saw.
[00:32:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Like it's been a tough two and a half weeks for me.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_03]: That's all you got to say.
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_03]: And people are like, OK, OK, but that's that's sitting up there
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_03]: taking accountability for mistakes you have made.
[00:32:25] [SPEAKER_03]: And it just sometimes you just got to do it.
[00:32:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. And you feel I mean, I know you say Cal probably would have done it,
[00:32:32] [SPEAKER_00]: which he probably would have.
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_00]: It's likely that guys like JP and Ty France probably would have done the same thing,
[00:32:37] [SPEAKER_00]: right? They probably would have stood up there and taken the questions.
[00:32:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Right. Yeah.
[00:32:41] [SPEAKER_03]: And again, it's it's all part of growing into yourself as a baseball player.
[00:32:46] [SPEAKER_03]: And it it just doesn't it does not look good when you don't.
[00:32:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. Because then people speculate.
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the worst thing that can happen.
[00:32:54] [SPEAKER_03]: You don't want speculation.
[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_03]: That's why we want transparency in all these things.
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: So people aren't sitting here guessing what somebody's thinking
[00:33:01] [SPEAKER_03]: or what like what the reaction is after the game.
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_03]: No, you just want the person who actually did something to come out and say
[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: so people don't speculate, right?
[00:33:11] [SPEAKER_03]: All we do off season is speculate, Lyle,
[00:33:13] [SPEAKER_03]: because Jerry DePoto doesn't phone in all of us and say, hey,
[00:33:16] [SPEAKER_03]: we've been in trade talks today, by the way.
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Right. Right. Right.
[00:33:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Nor nor should he, of course.
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_03]: No, no, he shouldn't.
[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_03]: But but it was an interesting way to
[00:33:29] [SPEAKER_03]: to to sort of wrap up this pretty terrible two and a half weeks for Julio.
[00:33:33] [SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully the next two and a half weeks are significantly better for him.
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_03]: The Mariners really need it and he really needs it as well.
[00:33:41] [SPEAKER_03]: It was cool getting Brett Boon on.
[00:33:42] [SPEAKER_03]: What what a storyteller he is made, I think,
[00:33:46] [SPEAKER_03]: a pretty seamless transition from the playing field.
[00:33:50] [SPEAKER_03]: Into the media world.
[00:33:52] [SPEAKER_03]: He did some television.
[00:33:54] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got his podcast now.
[00:33:56] [SPEAKER_03]: He's on Odyssey stations throughout the country talking about baseball.
[00:34:01] [SPEAKER_03]: He is a I didn't realize how good of a storyteller he was.
[00:34:04] [SPEAKER_03]: He tells us some really fun stories in this interview
[00:34:08] [SPEAKER_03]: from both his playing career and from the time he's now shifted into media.
[00:34:15] [SPEAKER_03]: He's got like such an interesting family.
[00:34:18] [SPEAKER_03]: It's such an interesting life he's lived.
[00:34:21] [SPEAKER_00]: For sure. Brothers, the manager of the Yankees.
[00:34:24] [SPEAKER_00]: He was on the greatest Mariners regular season team ever.
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_00]: He arguably, yes, I'm going to say this was the best player on that team.
[00:34:32] [SPEAKER_00]: And I know most of you are thinking each year we won the MVP that year.
[00:34:35] [SPEAKER_00]: There's talk about that in this interview.
[00:34:37] [SPEAKER_00]: You can listen to that.
[00:34:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Brett has a funny story or two about that.
[00:34:40] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of really cool stories.
[00:34:42] [SPEAKER_00]: We didn't realize all the time in media he had.
[00:34:46] [SPEAKER_00]: We knew we knew he had his podcast.
[00:34:47] [SPEAKER_00]: We knew he was on other stations.
[00:34:48] [SPEAKER_00]: But there's some other things Brett Boon's done in the media,
[00:34:51] [SPEAKER_00]: even while he was playing that you guys should listen to.
[00:34:54] [SPEAKER_00]: That was really interesting.
[00:34:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, overall, like not only is he a Mariner legend and had an awesome few years here,
[00:35:03] [SPEAKER_00]: but just a cool storyteller, an interesting, really interesting guy and a fun conversation.
[00:35:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Won't hold you any longer.
[00:35:11] [SPEAKER_03]: Let's get to our conversation with Brett Boon.
[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_00]: All right, we've got former Mariners second baseman Brett Boon on with us.
[00:35:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Now host of the Brett Boon podcast.
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_00]: You can check that out on Odyssey.
[00:35:24] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, a lot of athletes get into media these days and everybody has their different reasons.
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_00]: But for you, how did you decide a podcast was not only the avenue you wanted to go down,
[00:35:34] [SPEAKER_00]: but like why you wanted to start that specific thing?
[00:35:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't want to.
[00:35:40] [SPEAKER_02]: It was right before COVID.
[00:35:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I hadn't I hadn't done anything and I just kind of said,
[00:35:48] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, I'm going to get into some.
[00:35:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what I want to do.
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I want to go back on the field.
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if I want to be in media.
[00:35:54] [SPEAKER_01]: So I hired an agent, talent agent, not a baseball agent.
[00:35:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I still have my baseball agent for baseball stuff, but so they booked me on MLB network
[00:36:05] [SPEAKER_01]: and I went down to the studio and I shot four or five episodes and, you know,
[00:36:09] [SPEAKER_01]: it went pretty well and I liked it.
[00:36:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And we talked, hey, maybe we'll do something a week later.
[00:36:14] [SPEAKER_01]: COVID hit.
[00:36:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, it's kind of like everybody was in a holding pattern.
[00:36:20] [SPEAKER_01]: Nobody was traveling to New York, to New Jersey.
[00:36:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So my agent told me, he said, I want you to start a podcast.
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And I said, absolutely not.
[00:36:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to do that.
[00:36:29] [SPEAKER_01]: And he goes, come on, you need some work on this side of the microphone.
[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And I did because as athletes, you know, we get interviewed so much during our career.
[00:36:41] [SPEAKER_01]: It's easy to give you an interview.
[00:36:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I can sit here in Dazzle Y'all Day with an interview, but being on that side
[00:36:46] [SPEAKER_01]: of the microphone and interviewing other people.
[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And there's an art to it that I had to learn.
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And I have a great team around me that's really helped me through my,
[00:36:58] [SPEAKER_01]: through this little podcast journey and has taught me, you know, how to prepare.
[00:37:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's a lot of work.
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I think as athletes, we take for granted the media and think, oh,
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_01]: you're just asking questions.
[00:37:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there's a lot more that goes into it.
[00:37:13] [SPEAKER_01]: And I've found that out.
[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_01]: It's been very humbling actually going through this.
[00:37:16] [SPEAKER_01]: But then I started getting guests and I remember I was at the gym and Andre
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_01]: reads a buddy of mine and he works out at the same gym as me.
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_01]: And I walked up to him, I said, Andre, I said, I'm doing a podcast.
[00:37:28] [SPEAKER_01]: You're going to be my guinea pig.
[00:37:29] [SPEAKER_01]: He said, all right, I'm in.
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_01]: So I did it with Andre.
[00:37:31] [SPEAKER_01]: Then I called Griffey and it just started there about four years ago.
[00:37:36] [SPEAKER_01]: And we've just been roaring ever since.
[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_01]: And then Odyssey came in and wanted to be partners.
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's been a great partnership as far as the viewership.
[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, now I'm an Odyssey insider.
[00:37:47] [SPEAKER_01]: I went from athlete to Odyssey insider.
[00:37:50] [SPEAKER_01]: So now I do a lot of hits during the week for radio stations around the country.
[00:37:55] [SPEAKER_01]: But it actually keeps me.
[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_01]: It gives me something to do.
[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I get up in the morning, I follow the game, I study the game.
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, I have, I wake up in the morning, I have something to do.
[00:38:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And I complete task.
[00:38:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And it's it's good because when you walk away from the game, a lot of us
[00:38:13] [SPEAKER_01]: don't know what that's like, you know, all I did my whole life was play baseball.
[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_01]: And I figured I'll retire and I'll go off into the sunset and I'll play golf
[00:38:20] [SPEAKER_01]: every day and I'll go on vacation.
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that kind of gets old and is not very fulfilling after a while.
[00:38:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So I did my toe into this world and now we're doing it.
[00:38:29] [SPEAKER_01]: It's going great. And who knows?
[00:38:31] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I don't know where I'm going to go from here.
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe do some TV, maybe do some games.
[00:38:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And eventually who knows?
[00:38:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I might go back on the field I might manage one day.
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just keep my options open and really don't have a.
[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_01]: A timeline or or oh, I've got to get here to do this.
[00:38:49] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I just your brand gets bigger.
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_01]: You kind of wake up one day, say, hey, remember me, you know,
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_01]: from 15, 20 years ago and and you get your platform back.
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's what I'm doing right now.
[00:38:58] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm having a good time.
[00:39:00] [SPEAKER_03]: I thought your brother Aaron made a really good point when you brought
[00:39:03] [SPEAKER_03]: up the about always being on a certain side of the interview,
[00:39:07] [SPEAKER_03]: not being on like, Lawnice side of the interview and having to learn to interview.
[00:39:11] [SPEAKER_03]: And he was in the media world a little bit before you were you've been doing
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: this podcast now four years.
[00:39:16] [SPEAKER_03]: He's over that frame and been the manager Yankees after stepping out of
[00:39:19] [SPEAKER_03]: the ESPN booth.
[00:39:20] [SPEAKER_03]: What was he shedding any sort of light to you?
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like what was he giving you?
[00:39:24] [SPEAKER_03]: Like, hey, here's here, like the basics of what I did when I was at ESPN
[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_03]: to get better at this because I never felt like I was good at it at the beginning.
[00:39:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Not really.
[00:39:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Not really.
[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_01]: We really didn't talk much about it.
[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I just kind of been just kind of muscle in my way through it and finding it,
[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_01]: knocking my head on the counter once in a while ago.
[00:39:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, that wasn't a very good interview or man, I need to learn to breathe
[00:39:46] [SPEAKER_01]: or speak in soundbites.
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of like I said, I've got a really good team behind me.
[00:39:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I've got an executive producer that's done a great job and is really
[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of tutored me through the interview process and how to formulate
[00:39:59] [SPEAKER_01]: interviews and not just it's not just.
[00:40:02] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, a piece of paper with questions and you go down at the very
[00:40:06] [SPEAKER_01]: beginning. That's what I did.
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like I had 15 questions and it was like question one, question two,
[00:40:10] [SPEAKER_01]: question three.
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And I've learned to it's more of a it's a conversation.
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And I like to say it's like we're sitting in a golf cart and we're B
[00:40:18] [SPEAKER_01]: S and that that's what I like.
[00:40:20] [SPEAKER_01]: The boom podcast to be about is point counterpoint.
[00:40:24] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I might ask you a question might have a really cool
[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_01]: answer and I might be able to add to it.
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_01]: So instead of going to the next question, I go back and forth.
[00:40:30] [SPEAKER_01]: So the team around me, like I said, it's really helped me a lot and I'm
[00:40:35] [SPEAKER_01]: still learning.
[00:40:36] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've gotten a lot better at it.
[00:40:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I listened to some of the first ones I did and I laugh.
[00:40:41] [SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, I'm still, you know, I still got a ways to go.
[00:40:44] [SPEAKER_01]: So it's it's been fun.
[00:40:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It's been a challenge because I think that's that's what I was
[00:40:49] [SPEAKER_01]: missing a challenge in my life, you know, golf's a challenge.
[00:40:53] [SPEAKER_01]: But I really, you know, I sit around a five or six or seven handicap
[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I hang in there and I don't have that passion to practice and get to a zero
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_01]: handicap. A lot of my buddies do that.
[00:41:05] [SPEAKER_01]: They play golf and their goal is to be the best golfer they can be.
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I have a good time playing golf and I have a good time.
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_01]: The guys that I play with that are better than me taking shots and
[00:41:16] [SPEAKER_01]: going out and getting my handicap.
[00:41:19] [SPEAKER_01]: But this is it's just another challenge.
[00:41:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's something I've never done before and it's a learning process,
[00:41:24] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's a lot of fun.
[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_03]: You and Aaron are destined to like combine forces when he eventually stops
[00:41:29] [SPEAKER_03]: managing, right? Like it is destiny that you two are eventually like full time.
[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_03]: It's just going to be the two of you on this.
[00:41:36] [SPEAKER_03]: And it's going to honestly be pretty good because the episodes you do
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_03]: do together are really good.
[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Aaron, but we've always had Aaron and myself were very different.
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Our personalities are very different.
[00:41:51] [SPEAKER_01]: But a lot of our thoughts or beliefs.
[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely sporting wise, they're very similar, you know,
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_01]: baseball wise, we're very similar.
[00:42:00] [SPEAKER_01]: We differ on a few things.
[00:42:02] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'll talk to him throughout the course of this the season.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I usually talk to Aaron Price every couple of weeks.
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes he's got a question for me.
[00:42:11] [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes what do you think about this?
[00:42:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll run up by him.
[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes I'll call him and give him a suggestion.
[00:42:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes he listens to me.
[00:42:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes he doesn't listen to me.
[00:42:19] [SPEAKER_01]: But we banter and get along pretty good in that regard.
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And we've always had a good relationship growing up.
[00:42:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He was always my younger brother.
[00:42:28] [SPEAKER_01]: It was never a competitive thing between him and me.
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_01]: Because of the age difference, you know, when you're 12
[00:42:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and your little brother's eight, there's really no competition
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_01]: because there's too much of a gap.
[00:42:40] [SPEAKER_01]: And even when we got to the big leagues,
[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_01]: he got to the big leagues I think six years after me.
[00:42:45] [SPEAKER_01]: We were teammates for a minute.
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_01]: There was no competitiveness there either.
[00:42:49] [SPEAKER_01]: It was just a big brother wish and best for a little brother like I do now.
[00:42:52] [SPEAKER_01]: It's it's, you know, I pull for the Yankees.
[00:42:56] [SPEAKER_01]: That's tough for me to do, but because I couldn't stand him when I
[00:42:59] [SPEAKER_01]: when I was playing, you know, I respected the heck out of the New York Yankees.
[00:43:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Was never a fan, you know, the big bad wolf.
[00:43:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And now I find myself kind of, you know, I got a kind of pull for.
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd love to see Aaron get an opportunity to win a win a ring one day.
[00:43:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I think he's done a wonderful job.
[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_01]: It's a tough place to York, you know, from a media standpoint, you can do no right.
[00:43:22] [SPEAKER_01]: If you don't win at all, it's they they want you, you know,
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_01]: executed in the town square and there's really no win.
[00:43:28] [SPEAKER_01]: But I tell them all the time, you know, this is what you signed up for.
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And if you can win in New York, you'll have the key to that city forever.
[00:43:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm a proud big brother of what he's been able to accomplish.
[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I think he's done a great job.
[00:43:40] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I watched that Yankee team really closely.
[00:43:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And the last few years that they just decimated with injuries.
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And when you have a roster and key guys are hurt and have been hurt a lot,
[00:43:53] [SPEAKER_01]: you can't win. This is the big leagues, you know, if your big boys aren't healthy,
[00:43:58] [SPEAKER_01]: you're going to have a tough time competing and winning and going
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_01]: deep into the whole season. That's what he's run into.
[00:44:02] [SPEAKER_01]: But if you look at his record overall, I think he's won 100 games.
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_01]: Three of the years he's been managing there.
[00:44:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really proud of him.
[00:44:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I think he's done a great job.
[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Brett, if you were to call Aaron up on the phone one day,
[00:44:13] [SPEAKER_00]: because you said you guys talk pretty regularly and you said, you know,
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I looked at the lineup you put out last night.
[00:44:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I have some critiques.
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_00]: How would Aaron react to you saying that on the phone?
[00:44:25] [SPEAKER_01]: He would say, what do you think?
[00:44:26] [SPEAKER_01]: What do you think would be better?
[00:44:28] [SPEAKER_01]: And I tell him, you go, why?
[00:44:30] [SPEAKER_01]: And I tell him, why?
[00:44:31] [SPEAKER_01]: He might say, you know, I like that.
[00:44:34] [SPEAKER_01]: And he maybe switched the lineup.
[00:44:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Or he might say, he said, no,
[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't like it because of this, this and this.
[00:44:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And our data tells us this, this and this.
[00:44:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't have access to the internal data they have.
[00:44:48] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, not really a big data guy.
[00:44:49] [SPEAKER_01]: My generation weren't data guys.
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, currently, if I was on the field of capacity,
[00:44:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I would definitely make that a part of my game plan.
[00:45:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I think I think you're foolish
[00:45:02] [SPEAKER_01]: if you if you don't embrace technology
[00:45:04] [SPEAKER_01]: and everything we have today at our finger or our fingertips.
[00:45:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you're a fool if you don't use it.
[00:45:10] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I hear the.
[00:45:12] [SPEAKER_01]: The guys that have been retired 15, 20, 25 years.
[00:45:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, no, there's too much data and we did it our way.
[00:45:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think that's foolish.
[00:45:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you have to move on with the times.
[00:45:22] [SPEAKER_01]: I think you have to take what's in front of you.
[00:45:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm an envious in a lot of ways of this generation
[00:45:26] [SPEAKER_01]: and the knowledge they have in a tablet.
[00:45:31] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I was one of those guys.
[00:45:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I wanted as much intel as I could have.
[00:45:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll intake it, use what I think I can use to better my game
[00:45:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and go forward today.
[00:45:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[00:45:42] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I could get into a to a before a series.
[00:45:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I could I could have gone through every single picture
[00:45:49] [SPEAKER_01]: in that rotation.
[00:45:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Everybody in the bullpen and play it on a loop
[00:45:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and sit in my room all night.
[00:45:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And now I've got everybody.
[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I've got their last outing two weeks ago,
[00:45:59] [SPEAKER_01]: their last start and how they pitch certain guys
[00:46:02] [SPEAKER_01]: that match up well with my skill set.
[00:46:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And that would be really cool.
[00:46:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm very envious of that.
[00:46:09] [SPEAKER_01]: But no, that's long story short.
[00:46:13] [SPEAKER_01]: That's how the question would go
[00:46:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's how the answer would go.
[00:46:16] [SPEAKER_01]: And he might use it and he might not.
[00:46:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Is there anything specific you wish you had?
[00:46:21] [SPEAKER_03]: Like there's one piece of technology
[00:46:24] [SPEAKER_03]: or like one area of statistics
[00:46:27] [SPEAKER_03]: that you thought would have really helped you
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_03]: when you were playing?
[00:46:30] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I was a visual guy.
[00:46:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I loved when I was playing,
[00:46:36] [SPEAKER_01]: we were you'd put the DVD in
[00:46:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and let's say we're playing the,
[00:46:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know pick a team,
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_01]: we're playing the Yankees and Clemens is pitching tonight
[00:46:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and I've got to face them.
[00:46:47] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, what I want is Clemens his last outing
[00:46:51] [SPEAKER_01]: which was five days ago.
[00:46:52] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I want the last time I faced Roger
[00:46:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and I would play that
[00:46:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and I would watch all my best.
[00:46:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And usually I remembered all that
[00:47:00] [SPEAKER_01]: but it's good to put vision to it.
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he, you know, I might out of faced him
[00:47:05] [SPEAKER_01]: since the previous year.
[00:47:06] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he doing anything different this year?
[00:47:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he coming up with a different pitch?
[00:47:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Is he doing things that he normally doesn't do?
[00:47:15] [SPEAKER_01]: So I have that as a visual.
[00:47:16] [SPEAKER_01]: So now I formulate my plan before the game
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_01]: and I got to a point in my career
[00:47:20] [SPEAKER_01]: where I completely had a plan formulated
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_01]: before the game started.
[00:47:25] [SPEAKER_01]: Definitely, you know, five batters in front of you
[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_01]: before each of that.
[00:47:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I already formulated what I was going to do
[00:47:32] [SPEAKER_01]: what the approach was going to be.
[00:47:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And I really never wavered from that.
[00:47:35] [SPEAKER_01]: That video to me always was crucial.
[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, and I'd be grind it.
[00:47:40] [SPEAKER_01]: It would be in the sixth inning
[00:47:42] [SPEAKER_01]: and you know, it's a tight game
[00:47:46] [SPEAKER_01]: and I see the bullpen getting up
[00:47:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and there's a lefty and there's a righty
[00:47:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and who's hitting behind me tonight?
[00:47:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Is it Johnny Olorood or is Edgar hitting behind me tonight?
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm going to go to Johnny Olorood
[00:47:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and Edgar and say, what's your history
[00:47:59] [SPEAKER_01]: with this particular guy?
[00:48:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So now I know if I come up
[00:48:02] [SPEAKER_01]: and Johnny's hitting behind me, he goes,
[00:48:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Booney, I wear this guy out.
[00:48:05] [SPEAKER_01]: This guy might be more apt to come at me
[00:48:07] [SPEAKER_01]: for if Johnny says, I haven't had much success.
[00:48:10] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, he might be pitching around me.
[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_01]: So I want all this intel and just technology.
[00:48:15] [SPEAKER_01]: These guys today, we didn't have access
[00:48:17] [SPEAKER_01]: to a ton of video for the guys in the bullpen.
[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_01]: Nowadays you'll have it right here.
[00:48:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, here's Smith, Miller and Jones
[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_01]: and their last seven outings
[00:48:29] [SPEAKER_01]: on this particular team that we're playing at the time.
[00:48:32] [SPEAKER_01]: And I can sit there and watch, oh, this is what he's doing.
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he's using the two seammer more than he used to.
[00:48:38] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's just invaluable information
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_01]: that's right at your fingertips.
[00:48:42] [SPEAKER_01]: Now back then, you know, in the early 2000s,
[00:48:45] [SPEAKER_01]: it's like when you had to fight and claw
[00:48:47] [SPEAKER_01]: to just find any footage you could.
[00:48:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, we're still on the topic of Aaron a little bit
[00:48:52] [SPEAKER_00]: and the two of you.
[00:48:53] [SPEAKER_00]: So you guys obviously both had great careers
[00:48:56] [SPEAKER_00]: in very different ways, I would say.
[00:48:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And obviously Aaron had some post-season theatrics
[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_00]: that are very famous back in 2003.
[00:49:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And you guys said like it was always one brother
[00:49:04] [SPEAKER_00]: supporting another.
[00:49:05] [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't competitive.
[00:49:06] [SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't back and forth.
[00:49:08] [SPEAKER_00]: So when he hit that home run,
[00:49:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I've always been curious, where were you when he hit it?
[00:49:12] [SPEAKER_00]: How'd you react?
[00:49:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I was in the booth with Fox.
[00:49:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I was a part of the broadcast.
[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So I was with Tim McArthur and Joe Buck up in the booth.
[00:49:19] [SPEAKER_01]: That was one of the first years
[00:49:21] [SPEAKER_01]: they used the third man in the booth.
[00:49:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And we had just finished in 03,
[00:49:26] [SPEAKER_01]: we had just finished my mariner season.
[00:49:29] [SPEAKER_01]: We missed the playoffs.
[00:49:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I think we won 90 or 92 games.
[00:49:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember Fox calling me,
[00:49:35] [SPEAKER_01]: wanting me to be in the booth as the third man.
[00:49:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And I said, no, absolutely not.
[00:49:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to do it.
[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_01]: I just had a long year.
[00:49:40] [SPEAKER_01]: I was a little disappointed we didn't make the post-season.
[00:49:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just wanted to go on vacation and stay away from it.
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Well then they came back
[00:49:47] [SPEAKER_01]: and they offered a little bit more money
[00:49:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and a little bit more money.
[00:49:49] [SPEAKER_01]: And the next thing I thought,
[00:49:50] [SPEAKER_01]: well, I can go watch Aaron play at least.
[00:49:53] [SPEAKER_01]: So I ended up doing it.
[00:49:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Going into the booth,
[00:49:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I was, if you watch those videos,
[00:49:57] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, for the next year,
[00:49:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I had to hear it from all my teammates
[00:50:01] [SPEAKER_01]: how I didn't say anything in the booth.
[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And I really didn't.
[00:50:04] [SPEAKER_01]: It was a different,
[00:50:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I was kind of a fish out of water
[00:50:07] [SPEAKER_01]: because when you're a current player,
[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_01]: it's tough to be critical of the guys on the field.
[00:50:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And that was that series
[00:50:17] [SPEAKER_01]: where there was a lot of adversity with Pedro,
[00:50:20] [SPEAKER_01]: throwing it guys.
[00:50:21] [SPEAKER_01]: And they're putting me on the spot up in the booth
[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and Tim McArthur looks at me and he goes,
[00:50:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Poonie, he's throwing at him right there.
[00:50:30] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I've got to face Pedro in about four months.
[00:50:34] [SPEAKER_01]: I know he's down in the clubhouse right now
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_01]: because I would be,
[00:50:37] [SPEAKER_01]: he's watching the broadcast
[00:50:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's going to listen to what I have to say.
[00:50:42] [SPEAKER_01]: At the same time,
[00:50:43] [SPEAKER_01]: you've got to be somewhat credible to the audience.
[00:50:46] [SPEAKER_01]: You can't just, well,
[00:50:47] [SPEAKER_01]: it happens to the best of us.
[00:50:50] [SPEAKER_01]: After a while, you're going to lose credibility
[00:50:52] [SPEAKER_01]: with the fan base.
[00:50:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So I remember that particular question
[00:50:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and I just said, of course he drilled them all first.
[00:51:00] [SPEAKER_01]: Pedro doesn't miss like that.
[00:51:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Sure enough, the next day in the pregame meeting,
[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm walking through the Boston's locker
[00:51:06] [SPEAKER_01]: to get to the manager's office
[00:51:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and Pedro is yelling at me from the other side.
[00:51:09] [SPEAKER_01]: He goes, Poonie, I didn't mean to hit him.
[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_01]: And I looked at him and I said, no, yes you did.
[00:51:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Now it never came to anything
[00:51:15] [SPEAKER_01]: but I found it really tough as a broadcaster
[00:51:18] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're currently playing,
[00:51:20] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're still playing to be critical of these guys.
[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember Alfonso Soriano was playing second base
[00:51:27] [SPEAKER_01]: at the time and he butchered a ground ball
[00:51:33] [SPEAKER_01]: and they turned to me, well, what happened there?
[00:51:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, my honest answer was
[00:51:37] [SPEAKER_01]: he's not a very good second baseman.
[00:51:39] [SPEAKER_01]: He should be in left field
[00:51:41] [SPEAKER_01]: but I can't say that to Alfonso Soriano.
[00:51:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I've got to say, well, you know, it happens to me
[00:51:46] [SPEAKER_01]: once in a while which I'm thinking to myself
[00:51:47] [SPEAKER_01]: that never happens to me.
[00:51:50] [SPEAKER_01]: So it was an interesting experience
[00:51:52] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'm glad I was there because I got to see Aaron
[00:51:57] [SPEAKER_01]: hit one of the biggest home runs
[00:51:59] [SPEAKER_01]: in post season history and he was really struggling.
[00:52:03] [SPEAKER_01]: He was really struggling.
[00:52:04] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember that because the night before
[00:52:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I went to his apartment and he was kind of down.
[00:52:13] [SPEAKER_01]: He was having a really rough series and I said,
[00:52:15] [SPEAKER_01]: listen Aaron, what do you get a mope all day?
[00:52:19] [SPEAKER_01]: What's the problem here?
[00:52:20] [SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, well, you don't know what it's like.
[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, I don't know what it's like.
[00:52:23] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, look at my bubblegum card in 1996, 1997.
[00:52:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, I know what it's like.
[00:52:28] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, but tomorrow's a new day
[00:52:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and if you guys win tomorrow
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and if you turn a big double player
[00:52:34] [SPEAKER_01]: or you hit a sacrifice fly and you win,
[00:52:36] [SPEAKER_01]: nobody cares how bad of a series you've had.
[00:52:39] [SPEAKER_01]: It's all it is as well.
[00:52:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So I have that kind of pep talk with him.
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Next day I come to the ballpark.
[00:52:45] [SPEAKER_01]: He's not even a lineup.
[00:52:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I feel terrible and I'm going, oh man,
[00:52:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I hope they win as the game presses on.
[00:52:51] [SPEAKER_01]: I see him coming to the on deck circle
[00:52:52] [SPEAKER_01]: in his Wakefield pitching.
[00:52:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, I know what it's like
[00:52:56] [SPEAKER_01]: when you're completely lost at the play
[00:52:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and the traditional pitchers are getting out with
[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_01]: it doesn't matter fastball slide or curveball split.
[00:53:04] [SPEAKER_01]: They're getting you out with all of them.
[00:53:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And I thought, maybe this knuckle ball
[00:53:09] [SPEAKER_01]: is what he needs because normally
[00:53:11] [SPEAKER_01]: we don't want to face a knuckle ball.
[00:53:13] [SPEAKER_01]: But if you're having trouble hitting
[00:53:14] [SPEAKER_01]: maybe you need to go into slow pitch softball mode.
[00:53:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Wakefield, he goes up there and he hits that ball.
[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's the last thing on earth
[00:53:21] [SPEAKER_01]: I thought was going to happen
[00:53:22] [SPEAKER_01]: was he hit a home run right there.
[00:53:23] [SPEAKER_01]: And I just thought have a good at bat.
[00:53:26] [SPEAKER_01]: He hit it.
[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I knew it was gone when he hit it.
[00:53:28] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember just kind of standing there
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_01]: and kind of being...
[00:53:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember the guy in the truck
[00:53:37] [SPEAKER_01]: because you have your earpiece in
[00:53:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and I remember the guy saying, Brett,
[00:53:39] [SPEAKER_01]: what are you doing?
[00:53:40] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I wasn't saying anything.
[00:53:41] [SPEAKER_01]: I stood up and I was just watching.
[00:53:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was so happy for him
[00:53:45] [SPEAKER_01]: because I knew how we was feeling before that game.
[00:53:47] [SPEAKER_01]: And he just hit one of the biggest walk-offs ever.
[00:53:50] [SPEAKER_01]: And then the guy in the truck yells at me,
[00:53:52] [SPEAKER_01]: he goes, no, that's perfect.
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_01]: Less is more, less is more.
[00:53:55] [SPEAKER_01]: It didn't matter what the guy in the truck
[00:53:57] [SPEAKER_01]: was going to say.
[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_01]: That's how I was feeling at the time.
[00:53:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I had no words.
[00:54:00] [SPEAKER_01]: I couldn't believe how bad he was.
[00:54:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Didn't even start.
[00:54:03] [SPEAKER_01]: Got a pinch hit.
[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_01]: It's Wakefield hits the homer.
[00:54:06] [SPEAKER_01]: It was like a movie.
[00:54:08] [SPEAKER_01]: And it was really cool.
[00:54:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And after that game,
[00:54:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I would normally never go into an opposing team's clubhouse
[00:54:16] [SPEAKER_01]: when I was playing.
[00:54:17] [SPEAKER_01]: That would be the Yankee clubhouse.
[00:54:19] [SPEAKER_01]: But I kind of worked my way down to the Yankee clubhouse
[00:54:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and I went in and I remember,
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was Jason Giambi was there.
[00:54:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Who's a buddy of mine?
[00:54:27] [SPEAKER_01]: And they were all celebrating having champagne.
[00:54:29] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, here I am a mariner that missed the post season
[00:54:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm watching these guys pop champagne
[00:54:34] [SPEAKER_01]: but I went over and I gave him a hug
[00:54:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and I said, dude, I'm really proud of you.
[00:54:37] [SPEAKER_01]: That was really cool.
[00:54:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And then I scurried out of that clubhouse
[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm like, I don't want to watch this
[00:54:43] [SPEAKER_01]: because I'm jealous
[00:54:44] [SPEAKER_01]: because I thought our mariner team should be doing that.
[00:54:48] [SPEAKER_03]: What is it like getting to work with Joe Buck?
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:54:54] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
[00:54:56] [SPEAKER_02]: It was okay.
[00:54:57] [SPEAKER_02]: It was fine.
[00:54:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I think Joe's a pro.
[00:55:02] [SPEAKER_02]: But you know, I almost felt
[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_02]: like
[00:55:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think some of it is our fault as current athletes.
[00:55:12] [SPEAKER_01]: I went into that booth
[00:55:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and I really didn't take it serious.
[00:55:15] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's just like Fox paid me to be here.
[00:55:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm here to watch a game, maybe comment once in a while.
[00:55:22] [SPEAKER_01]: And I didn't take into consideration
[00:55:25] [SPEAKER_01]: this is their livelihood.
[00:55:27] [SPEAKER_01]: This is what Tim McAvlar and Joe Buck do for a living.
[00:55:30] [SPEAKER_01]: This is very important to them.
[00:55:32] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm still a player in my prime
[00:55:35] [SPEAKER_01]: that happens to be a guest in their booth
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'm still Brett Boone, the star player from Seattle.
[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And if I could take something back,
[00:55:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I would have taken that in consideration a little bit more
[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_01]: because it was kind of like, I'm on vacation
[00:55:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and yeah, I'm forced to be here.
[00:55:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Not taking into consideration,
[00:55:53] [SPEAKER_01]: this is what these guys do for a living
[00:55:55] [SPEAKER_01]: and this is how they earn a living.
[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm in there, you know,
[00:55:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm a guest in their booth
[00:56:00] [SPEAKER_01]: whereas I was just more on vacation in there.
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_01]: So, there wasn't a, I don't know, me and Buck were all right.
[00:56:09] [SPEAKER_01]: We're cool but yeah, it was fine.
[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, Timmy McAvlar is a guy that I grew up with.
[00:56:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Timmy was a teammate of my dad in Philly.
[00:56:23] [SPEAKER_01]: So I remember Tim for when I was five years old.
[00:56:27] [SPEAKER_01]: So to be with Timmy, that was pretty cool
[00:56:31] [SPEAKER_01]: because the only relationship we had was
[00:56:35] [SPEAKER_01]: to big league catcher some kid in third grade
[00:56:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and now all of a sudden we're kind of peers in the booth.
[00:56:41] [SPEAKER_01]: So that was cool.
[00:56:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But to this day it was something like,
[00:56:46] [SPEAKER_01]: I wish I'd have prepared a little bit more for that
[00:56:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and not just kind of been aloof
[00:56:51] [SPEAKER_01]: but I think that's part of being young
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and part of being in your element.
[00:56:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I watch players today and you know,
[00:56:58] [SPEAKER_01]: when a player behaves a certain way,
[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_01]: you know the tendency is to go, how could he be like that?
[00:57:04] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, but I'm at a point in my life
[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_01]: where I look back and go, hey, I was a kid one time.
[00:57:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I was young, I did stupid things
[00:57:11] [SPEAKER_01]: that I'd probably be criticizing myself for.
[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_01]: So I give the young players today,
[00:57:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I give them a lot of leeway like we're all kids,
[00:57:18] [SPEAKER_01]: we're all knuckleheads when we're young
[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_01]: and one day we get a little bit over and older
[00:57:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and we look back at our young self and go,
[00:57:24] [SPEAKER_01]: what was I thinking?
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, so I'm not very critical of the players
[00:57:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and some of the behaviors I see.
[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I said that's just kids being kids
[00:57:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and we were all one at one point.
[00:57:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I was and I definitely had my share of knucklehead moments.
[00:57:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Were you ever mesmerized by the amount of notes
[00:57:40] [SPEAKER_00]: that Joe Buck had in the booth?
[00:57:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Was I like, I don't know how close you look
[00:57:43] [SPEAKER_00]: but just two people who have done, yeah.
[00:57:46] [SPEAKER_01]: It was unbelievable.
[00:57:47] [SPEAKER_01]: No, both of them.
[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_01]: Timmy too, Macarver.
[00:57:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd get to the booth and Joe would say,
[00:57:52] [SPEAKER_01]: all right, Brett, here's what we got.
[00:57:55] [SPEAKER_01]: I need you to do an opening
[00:57:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're gonna talk about the keys to the game.
[00:57:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I'd get to the booth like five minutes
[00:58:01] [SPEAKER_01]: before we go on TV.
[00:58:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So I'm just kinda, hey, what's going on?
[00:58:05] [SPEAKER_01]: I show up, these guys are sitting there.
[00:58:07] [SPEAKER_01]: They got their notes,
[00:58:08] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean they got their highlighters
[00:58:11] [SPEAKER_01]: and it was unbelievable the amount of notes
[00:58:13] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's what I said.
[00:58:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I understand, you know,
[00:58:16] [SPEAKER_01]: for the simplest interview,
[00:58:18] [SPEAKER_01]: I have my notes all over my desk
[00:58:21] [SPEAKER_01]: the thing about taking notes is
[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_01]: really I don't refer to them too often
[00:58:24] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's a part of the process.
[00:58:27] [SPEAKER_01]: For me writing it down, it goes into my mind
[00:58:30] [SPEAKER_01]: but I have to physically put pen to paper to do it.
[00:58:33] [SPEAKER_01]: These guys had an excessive amounts,
[00:58:35] [SPEAKER_01]: footnotes, just odds and ends
[00:58:39] [SPEAKER_01]: but really, you know, that's what pros do
[00:58:41] [SPEAKER_01]: and you look at Joe Buck, the career he's had.
[00:58:44] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember his dad doing games
[00:58:45] [SPEAKER_01]: and say, Lewis, I loved his dad
[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_01]: but Joe, he goes from baseball to football
[00:58:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and he doesn't miss a beat.
[00:58:54] [SPEAKER_01]: He can beat, he can go do golf.
[00:58:58] [SPEAKER_01]: If I had to say, I think Joe Buck's
[00:59:00] [SPEAKER_01]: one of the best commentators of our time
[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_01]: on air broadcasters of our time.
[00:59:07] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a real pro.
[00:59:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So you talk about Brett how much you've learned since then?
[00:59:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean going into the media world
[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and just watching games and saying that
[00:59:16] [SPEAKER_00]: if you had been in the booth back when you were a player
[00:59:19] [SPEAKER_00]: and known otherwise,
[00:59:20] [SPEAKER_00]: you would have taken it a little bit more seriously.
[00:59:22] [SPEAKER_00]: If you were to get back into the booth today,
[00:59:24] [SPEAKER_00]: what do you think you do differently now?
[00:59:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think what you've got to do is
[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_01]: you've got to keep the credibility with the player
[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_01]: or with the listener.
[00:59:36] [SPEAKER_01]: So you can't just be pro player
[00:59:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and comb over everything.
[00:59:41] [SPEAKER_01]: There's a mistake being made.
[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_01]: You have to be critical.
[00:59:44] [SPEAKER_01]: Now, you can do it in a professional way.
[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_01]: For years and years I would watch our telecasts.
[00:59:53] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean I was in the clubhouse in between the bats constantly
[00:59:56] [SPEAKER_01]: so I would hear everything going on.
[00:59:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And if I wasn't,
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_01]: if I was struggling or I wasn't playing well,
[01:00:05] [SPEAKER_01]: say that week and they were a little critical of me,
[01:00:08] [SPEAKER_01]: that was fine.
[01:00:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I just said be critical.
[01:00:11] [SPEAKER_01]: That's part of my job.
[01:00:14] [SPEAKER_01]: They pay me a lot of money to,
[01:00:16] [SPEAKER_01]: if you're not doing your job,
[01:00:17] [SPEAKER_01]: you're going to hear about it.
[01:00:18] [SPEAKER_01]: And I had no problem with that.
[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_01]: Just do it in a professional manner.
[01:00:22] [SPEAKER_01]: So that's all I would do is bring the game to you,
[01:00:25] [SPEAKER_01]: criticize when I need to criticize,
[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_01]: but do it in a professional way.
[01:00:29] [SPEAKER_01]: Not in a, I'm a jerk way.
[01:00:31] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, like, oh, back,
[01:00:33] [SPEAKER_01]: get off my lawn type.
[01:00:34] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, back when I played, no, none of that.
[01:00:37] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just the game is hard.
[01:00:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I know that, especially at this level.
[01:00:43] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's the thing I have now
[01:00:45] [SPEAKER_01]: is I've got a little bit of experience under my belt
[01:00:50] [SPEAKER_01]: of not only baseball, but life.
[01:00:52] [SPEAKER_01]: So, and I do realize, you know,
[01:00:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm still in tune with the modern day player.
[01:00:56] [SPEAKER_01]: So I realized how tough it is, you know?
[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_01]: It's not too long ago that I was sitting in my room
[01:01:01] [SPEAKER_01]: looking at the ceiling thinking,
[01:01:02] [SPEAKER_01]: how come I can't get a hit?
[01:01:03] [SPEAKER_01]: So, so I'm very aware of that when I watch a game
[01:01:06] [SPEAKER_01]: and people are being critical of people today on them.
[01:01:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's guy can't hit or he stinks.
[01:01:11] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, listen, wait a minute, wait a minute,
[01:01:13] [SPEAKER_01]: what are we talking about here?
[01:01:14] [SPEAKER_01]: This is really tough.
[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_01]: And he's struggling right now, but I've been through it.
[01:01:18] [SPEAKER_01]: So you've got to bring the game to the fans,
[01:01:22] [SPEAKER_01]: to the listener.
[01:01:24] [SPEAKER_01]: You've got to be critical when to be critical as necessary.
[01:01:27] [SPEAKER_01]: You ever sit there and you watch somebody
[01:01:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and they just comb over everything.
[01:01:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So everything that happens negative on the field.
[01:01:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you know, it was a tough hop
[01:01:35] [SPEAKER_01]: or, you know, that was a tough pitch
[01:01:36] [SPEAKER_01]: or this was at some point, you got to go, no,
[01:01:39] [SPEAKER_01]: he didn't move his feet.
[01:01:41] [SPEAKER_01]: That's why he didn't get a good hop.
[01:01:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So there's ways to do it and ways not to do it.
[01:01:45] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think a guy that does a really good job
[01:01:48] [SPEAKER_01]: right now is John Smoles.
[01:01:49] [SPEAKER_01]: I think he does a really good job.
[01:01:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I think David Cone in New York,
[01:01:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I really like listening to his critique
[01:01:54] [SPEAKER_01]: and his broadcast.
[01:01:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So there's a way to do it and there's a way not to do it.
[01:02:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Brett, want to go back to the 2001 season.
[01:02:03] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you were a integral part
[01:02:05] [SPEAKER_03]: of one of the most fun baseball teams of all time.
[01:02:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Like 160 wins over 162 total games is just incredible.
[01:02:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Is there a game you remember more than any other game
[01:02:19] [SPEAKER_03]: in that season for good reason?
[01:02:23] [SPEAKER_01]: Not really, you know, one that stands out to me
[01:02:25] [SPEAKER_01]: that's funny is and it's still on Major League.
[01:02:28] [SPEAKER_01]: It's on Major League classics is the Cleveland game
[01:02:32] [SPEAKER_01]: where they came back and beat us.
[01:02:34] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, we were, I think we were winning.
[01:02:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't play that game.
[01:02:37] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember Lou giving me the day off
[01:02:39] [SPEAKER_01]: and back then it was the game of the week.
[01:02:43] [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was Monday night baseball.
[01:02:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember doing an interview with Johnny Miller
[01:02:47] [SPEAKER_01]: before the game and I said, Johnny, I'm not playing.
[01:02:51] [SPEAKER_01]: He said, I said, losers really not, you know,
[01:02:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and that was my personal.
[01:02:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, Lou's not really taking this game very serious.
[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_01]: If he wants to win, I should be playing.
[01:02:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course having fun with it.
[01:03:00] [SPEAKER_01]: So I, game starts and Jay Buehner's with us
[01:03:03] [SPEAKER_01]: on the trip and he's injured.
[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_01]: So he's not playing.
[01:03:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember Lou comes up to me before the game
[01:03:09] [SPEAKER_01]: and he says, son, he said no matter what,
[01:03:13] [SPEAKER_01]: because I had played like 50 in a row.
[01:03:14] [SPEAKER_01]: He goes, no matter what today,
[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't care if we win, lose or draw,
[01:03:17] [SPEAKER_01]: you were not playing.
[01:03:18] [SPEAKER_01]: He said, don't even wear your spice.
[01:03:20] [SPEAKER_01]: So I kind of took that attitude
[01:03:22] [SPEAKER_01]: and I had my turf's on and you know, we're winning.
[01:03:25] [SPEAKER_01]: So I don't, I forget the game.
[01:03:26] [SPEAKER_01]: It was 10 to one in the sixth
[01:03:29] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm definitely not playing.
[01:03:31] [SPEAKER_01]: So me and Buehner are messing around
[01:03:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and all of a sudden it's 10, it's 10, seven
[01:03:36] [SPEAKER_01]: and then it's 12 to eight.
[01:03:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just, I'm Philip.
[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm just making up numbers here.
[01:03:40] [SPEAKER_01]: The game's getting closer.
[01:03:42] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember Jay looks at me and he goes,
[01:03:44] [SPEAKER_01]: you know the baser loaded.
[01:03:46] [SPEAKER_01]: Now it's like the eighth or the ninth inning.
[01:03:49] [SPEAKER_01]: He says, you know, if Omar Viscale was playing
[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_01]: for the Indians at the time, he goes,
[01:03:54] [SPEAKER_01]: he hits a double right here and they cleared the bases.
[01:03:56] [SPEAKER_01]: You know that it's a tie game
[01:03:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and then Lou's gonna make you hit.
[01:04:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And I look at Jay, I said, no way.
[01:04:02] [SPEAKER_01]: Soon as he said that boom,
[01:04:04] [SPEAKER_01]: double down the right field line.
[01:04:07] [SPEAKER_01]: They circle, it's a tie game.
[01:04:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And Jay's cracking up laughing at me.
[01:04:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I don't even think I have my jersey on.
[01:04:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I think I have like a T-shirt and a pullover.
[01:04:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So the inning ends and I'm sitting
[01:04:22] [SPEAKER_01]: at the end of the bench and here comes Lou
[01:04:25] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm peeking around the corner.
[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I see him coming down there.
[01:04:27] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, he's not gonna ask me to hit him.
[01:04:29] [SPEAKER_01]: He already promised me that I'm not hitting
[01:04:31] [SPEAKER_01]: no matter what.
[01:04:33] [SPEAKER_01]: And I'm kind of high.
[01:04:35] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm kind of leaning back in my chair on the bench
[01:04:38] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm cut, BUNER's right here next to me
[01:04:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's poking him right my head around the corner
[01:04:43] [SPEAKER_01]: and BUNER's laughing.
[01:04:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And Lou gets to me, he looks around BUNER
[01:04:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and he sees me and he says, son,
[01:04:50] [SPEAKER_01]: and he throws his hands up.
[01:04:51] [SPEAKER_01]: He goes, I'm sorry, but you've got a hit.
[01:04:54] [SPEAKER_01]: No, I had to run up to the clubhouse
[01:04:56] [SPEAKER_01]: and put my spikes on.
[01:04:58] [SPEAKER_01]: I faced John Rocker who was a teammate of mine
[01:05:00] [SPEAKER_01]: in Atlanta two years prior, previous
[01:05:03] [SPEAKER_01]: and ended up striking out on four or five pitches.
[01:05:07] [SPEAKER_01]: And that's a game that I definitely remember
[01:05:10] [SPEAKER_01]: because that's the game I was not gonna play it,
[01:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: but I played it and we lost.
[01:05:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, so I'm glad you brought up that game
[01:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: because I wanted to ask about it.
[01:05:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I figured you'd pick one of the 116 games
[01:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: that you won first and said,
[01:05:24] [SPEAKER_00]: oh, like this game was really fun
[01:05:25] [SPEAKER_00]: and we really enjoyed playing like this game.
[01:05:27] [SPEAKER_00]: We won so many games that year.
[01:05:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, oh yeah.
[01:05:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But I am curious about the one you lost
[01:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: which you just went into detail about
[01:05:35] [SPEAKER_00]: because so if you want the exact numbers,
[01:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: you guys were up 12 to nothing after three
[01:05:40] [SPEAKER_00]: and then 14 to two after five.
[01:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: So my question is what was the post game shock
[01:05:45] [SPEAKER_00]: like in that clubhouse where you say
[01:05:47] [SPEAKER_00]: not only does this team barely ever lose,
[01:05:50] [SPEAKER_00]: but we just lost a game like that.
[01:05:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Us, maybe the best regular season team ever.
[01:05:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Like was there a lot of shock after that game?
[01:05:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Well, I think that team as much as,
[01:06:01] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, it wasn't an arrogant team.
[01:06:03] [SPEAKER_01]: That was a bunch of veteran guys,
[01:06:07] [SPEAKER_01]: pros that have been there, done that
[01:06:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and have a lot of experience.
[01:06:12] [SPEAKER_01]: And at the end of the day,
[01:06:13] [SPEAKER_01]: you chalk it up as that's baseball
[01:06:16] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's a crazy game
[01:06:17] [SPEAKER_01]: and stuff like that can happen.
[01:06:18] [SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
[01:06:19] [SPEAKER_01]: We won so often that year
[01:06:22] [SPEAKER_01]: that it was a shock when we lost a game.
[01:06:25] [SPEAKER_01]: It was like, how'd we lose that one?
[01:06:26] [SPEAKER_01]: Let alone a blowout and they reversed it on us.
[01:06:32] [SPEAKER_01]: But really, it wasn't a big deal.
[01:06:33] [SPEAKER_01]: We were leading by so many games.
[01:06:35] [SPEAKER_01]: Of course, everybody, you know,
[01:06:37] [SPEAKER_01]: you get pissed when you lose
[01:06:38] [SPEAKER_01]: no matter how many games you went,
[01:06:39] [SPEAKER_01]: especially one that you had in hand.
[01:06:43] [SPEAKER_01]: But now it was just more of a,
[01:06:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't believe that happened.
[01:06:47] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, that was kind of the sentiment.
[01:06:48] [SPEAKER_01]: There wasn't any anger.
[01:06:50] [SPEAKER_01]: Cause like I said, we won so often
[01:06:53] [SPEAKER_01]: that we really didn't have too many times
[01:06:55] [SPEAKER_01]: we were down or in a rough spot.
[01:06:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Was Lou allowed to get mad during the regular season
[01:07:01] [SPEAKER_03]: cause you guys won so much?
[01:07:02] [SPEAKER_03]: Was he allowed?
[01:07:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Blue does whatever he wants.
[01:07:05] [SPEAKER_01]: He's a beauty.
[01:07:07] [SPEAKER_01]: One of my favorites of all time.
[01:07:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And I remember the press coming to me early
[01:07:13] [SPEAKER_01]: in the season and said,
[01:07:15] [SPEAKER_01]: you know, Brett,
[01:07:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Lou's really changed.
[01:07:17] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he's really gotten quieter
[01:07:21] [SPEAKER_01]: and he's much more calm
[01:07:23] [SPEAKER_01]: as he's getting a little bit older.
[01:07:24] [SPEAKER_01]: And I laughed at him.
[01:07:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, if you win every day,
[01:07:28] [SPEAKER_01]: no wonder he's never in a bad mood.
[01:07:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, if you can't smile
[01:07:32] [SPEAKER_01]: when you come to the yard on this team,
[01:07:35] [SPEAKER_01]: then it's impossible for you.
[01:07:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So no, it's not that he's lost his edge
[01:07:40] [SPEAKER_01]: or he's not Lou anymore.
[01:07:41] [SPEAKER_01]: It's just we win every day.
[01:07:43] [SPEAKER_01]: So he has nothing to say
[01:07:45] [SPEAKER_01]: but that was a fun ride.
[01:07:47] [SPEAKER_01]: It was like a, you know, that year
[01:07:50] [SPEAKER_01]: it was like a magic carpet ride.
[01:07:51] [SPEAKER_01]: It's something that, like I said,
[01:07:53] [SPEAKER_01]: we're a veteran team.
[01:07:55] [SPEAKER_01]: So we had been there, done that.
[01:07:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd been on some really good teams in Cincinnati.
[01:07:59] [SPEAKER_01]: I was on a great team in 99 with the Atlanta Braves.
[01:08:03] [SPEAKER_01]: And I was on some rough teams, you know?
[01:08:05] [SPEAKER_01]: And when I first came up,
[01:08:07] [SPEAKER_01]: we were in the last place in Seattle.
[01:08:09] [SPEAKER_01]: 96 or 96, 97 in Cincinnati were some tough years.
[01:08:15] [SPEAKER_01]: 2000 and I was a Padre.
[01:08:17] [SPEAKER_01]: We came in last, I think.
[01:08:19] [SPEAKER_01]: So I knew what it was like to be on both sides of the ledger
[01:08:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and so did a lot of players on that team.
[01:08:26] [SPEAKER_01]: So we just wrote it and we realized
[01:08:30] [SPEAKER_01]: that we're going through something really special
[01:08:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and just enjoy the ride because it doesn't happen too often.
[01:08:36] [SPEAKER_00]: How many times in your career, speaking of Lou Pinella,
[01:08:39] [SPEAKER_00]: did you have to endure chewouts from Lou?
[01:08:44] [SPEAKER_01]: When I came back the second time, 2001,
[01:08:48] [SPEAKER_01]: I had him for 2001, 2002, zero.
[01:08:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Lou never chewed me out.
[01:08:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Me and him were buddies.
[01:08:54] [SPEAKER_01]: And if Lou started to say something to me,
[01:08:56] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd yell back at him and then he would look at me
[01:08:59] [SPEAKER_01]: and smile and go, all right, bone, all right.
[01:09:02] [SPEAKER_01]: We had a really good rapport.
[01:09:05] [SPEAKER_01]: We were friends and we also had a very high level
[01:09:09] [SPEAKER_01]: of mutual respect.
[01:09:10] [SPEAKER_01]: So he never chewed me out ever.
[01:09:12] [SPEAKER_01]: When I was a kid, different ball game.
[01:09:15] [SPEAKER_01]: When he came over from the Reds and I was there in 93,
[01:09:19] [SPEAKER_01]: oh, we almost had it out two or three times in his locker,
[01:09:22] [SPEAKER_01]: in his office.
[01:09:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like drag out, screaming at each other.
[01:09:30] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, and then I look back years later
[01:09:32] [SPEAKER_01]: and I realized what he was doing
[01:09:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and he was testing me as a young player.
[01:09:39] [SPEAKER_01]: And I got to a point where I just,
[01:09:42] [SPEAKER_01]: he was hard on me as a young player.
[01:09:45] [SPEAKER_01]: And I would fight back.
[01:09:46] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was stubborn and Lou would send me down
[01:09:49] [SPEAKER_01]: and then he'd call me up and then he'd send me down
[01:09:52] [SPEAKER_01]: and we'd be drag out fights in his locker, not physical,
[01:09:56] [SPEAKER_01]: but yell shouting matches.
[01:09:59] [SPEAKER_01]: And we did a lot when I was a young player,
[01:10:01] [SPEAKER_01]: but I'll tell you, I went to Cincinnati.
[01:10:03] [SPEAKER_01]: He traded me to Cincinnati.
[01:10:06] [SPEAKER_01]: And the first guy, when I was available
[01:10:08] [SPEAKER_01]: to come back to Seattle,
[01:10:09] [SPEAKER_01]: the reason I came back to Seattle was because of work
[01:10:12] [SPEAKER_01]: because he wanted me that much to come back.
[01:10:14] [SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, and to this day, one of my favorite,
[01:10:19] [SPEAKER_01]: not only managers, but one of my favorite men
[01:10:22] [SPEAKER_01]: throughout my baseball journey.
[01:10:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Did you ever think throughout that 2001 season
[01:10:28] [SPEAKER_00]: because that was such a great MVP race that year too?
[01:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: Did thoughts ever creep into your head?
[01:10:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I know players say, oh, I don't think about that stuff,
[01:10:35] [SPEAKER_00]: but did you ever have thoughts of,
[01:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: can I win the MVP on this team in this year?
[01:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, to this day,
[01:10:46] [SPEAKER_01]: each year, I tell each year, I said,
[01:10:48] [SPEAKER_01]: you should send that MVP trophy over to my house
[01:10:51] [SPEAKER_01]: because I should have won it.
[01:10:54] [SPEAKER_01]: I'll grab something for you.
[01:10:56] [SPEAKER_01]: Hold on.
[01:10:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[01:10:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Looking forward to this.
[01:11:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the suspense is real here.
[01:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
[01:11:05] [SPEAKER_02]: What is this?
[01:11:08] What is this?
[01:11:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Meriners MVP.
[01:11:14] [SPEAKER_01]: How can you be the Meriners MVP
[01:11:16] [SPEAKER_01]: but your teammate is the league MVP?
[01:11:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's impossible.
[01:11:23] [SPEAKER_03]: The wonderful baseball riders association of America, Brett.
[01:11:26] [SPEAKER_01]: That's why it's impossible.
[01:11:27] [SPEAKER_01]: It's impossible.
[01:11:31] [SPEAKER_02]: And I tease each year about it all the time.
[01:11:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Um,
[01:11:35] [SPEAKER_02]: back to that on a serious note.
[01:11:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I realized a long time ago,
[01:11:43] [SPEAKER_02]: you can only do what you can do.
[01:11:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And once you play the game,
[01:11:49] [SPEAKER_01]: you put up the numbers, it's out of your control.
[01:11:52] [SPEAKER_01]: Awards come and go.
[01:11:54] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, there were several times where,
[01:11:56] [SPEAKER_01]: that's not the man, I should have won a gold glove
[01:11:57] [SPEAKER_01]: and I didn't.
[01:11:59] [SPEAKER_01]: Then I won one that I didn't think I should have won
[01:12:01] [SPEAKER_01]: and I won.
[01:12:03] [SPEAKER_02]: There were years I should have gone to the All-Star game.
[01:12:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't go.
[01:12:07] [SPEAKER_02]: But I'm not,
[01:12:10] [SPEAKER_02]: my dad told me a long time ago, Brett, life's not fair.
[01:12:13] [SPEAKER_01]: So what are you gonna do about it?
[01:12:14] [SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna mow, you're gonna do your job.
[01:12:17] [SPEAKER_01]: So we don't play this game for awards.
[01:12:18] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nice when you win them, don't get me wrong.
[01:12:21] [SPEAKER_01]: Every time I won an award, it was an honor.
[01:12:23] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's something I realized a long time ago.
[01:12:25] [SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to control it.
[01:12:27] [SPEAKER_01]: You do the best you can
[01:12:28] [SPEAKER_01]: and the chips fall where they may.
[01:12:31] [SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes you win and sometimes you don't.
[01:12:33] [SPEAKER_01]: Yichiro had an unbelievable year there.
[01:12:35] [SPEAKER_01]: He was great.
[01:12:37] [SPEAKER_01]: I went over from Japan, he was the huge story
[01:12:40] [SPEAKER_01]: he kind of put Japanese baseball on the map.
[01:12:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I think Hideo Nomo back earlier really
[01:12:46] [SPEAKER_01]: was the first pitcher that came over here
[01:12:48] [SPEAKER_01]: and really, really arrived.
[01:12:51] [SPEAKER_01]: But from a position player standpoint,
[01:12:52] [SPEAKER_01]: I think Yichiro was the first
[01:12:54] [SPEAKER_01]: to really put the position player on the map.
[01:12:57] [SPEAKER_01]: Matt Sui in New York shortly followed that.
[01:13:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And was definitely a great player.
[01:13:05] [SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, and like I said,
[01:13:07] [SPEAKER_01]: it's something I can tease Yichiro about.
[01:13:09] [SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, you always thought, man,
[01:13:12] [SPEAKER_01]: there's not much more I could do that year number wise
[01:13:15] [SPEAKER_01]: from a second baseman, but it didn't work out
[01:13:18] [SPEAKER_01]: and that's okay.
[01:13:22] [SPEAKER_01]: It's nothing I really look back on.
[01:13:24] [SPEAKER_01]: Because I had no control over it.
[01:13:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I did what I did.
[01:13:28] [SPEAKER_01]: You talk to the local writers
[01:13:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and some guys voted for you,
[01:13:31] [SPEAKER_01]: some guys didn't.
[01:13:32] [SPEAKER_01]: But it's something you don't really think about.
[01:13:35] [SPEAKER_01]: And I surely don't.
[01:13:36] [SPEAKER_01]: Like I said, I remember back when my dad
[01:13:38] [SPEAKER_01]: when he used to have talks to me
[01:13:40] [SPEAKER_01]: and go listen to like a player
[01:13:42] [SPEAKER_01]: or quit talking about stuff
[01:13:44] [SPEAKER_01]: he had no control over and he's right.
[01:13:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so speaking of Yichiro,
[01:13:49] [SPEAKER_03]: at what point at spring training
[01:13:51] [SPEAKER_03]: did you realize this dude is kind of ridiculous?
[01:13:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Like ridiculously good.
[01:13:57] [SPEAKER_01]: We didn't know.
[01:13:58] [SPEAKER_01]: Spring training we had no clue
[01:13:59] [SPEAKER_01]: because he was doing his thing,
[01:14:03] [SPEAKER_01]: slapping balls the other way.
[01:14:06] [SPEAKER_01]: You know, he was talking a little bit, not really.
[01:14:09] [SPEAKER_01]: Once we got in the season
[01:14:10] [SPEAKER_01]: and his ability to get hits the way he got hits,
[01:14:15] [SPEAKER_01]: I think nobody had ever gotten hits that way before.
[01:14:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he was hitting routine ground balls
[01:14:19] [SPEAKER_01]: to short and beating them out.
[01:14:21] [SPEAKER_01]: He made short stops change their game
[01:14:24] [SPEAKER_01]: when he was hitting
[01:14:25] [SPEAKER_01]: because I don't think we'd ever seen somebody
[01:14:27] [SPEAKER_01]: get out of the box the way he did.
[01:14:30] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Yichiro is fast,
[01:14:32] [SPEAKER_01]: but his technique of getting out of the box
[01:14:34] [SPEAKER_01]: when he was swinging made him ridiculously fast.
[01:14:38] [SPEAKER_01]: So he changed defense the way they defenced him.
[01:14:41] [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, especially that first year
[01:14:44] [SPEAKER_01]: we had a lot of fun.
[01:14:45] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Yichiro is people don't understand.
[01:14:47] [SPEAKER_01]: He's funny.
[01:14:48] [SPEAKER_01]: He's charismatic.
[01:14:51] [SPEAKER_01]: And he would have us cracking up
[01:14:53] [SPEAKER_01]: because he knew a lot more English than he let on.
[01:14:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And you know, guys would tell him dirty jokes
[01:14:58] [SPEAKER_01]: and he'd say them in his Japanese accent.
[01:15:01] [SPEAKER_01]: And he was a lot of fun.
[01:15:05] [SPEAKER_01]: That those teams, especially 010203,
[01:15:08] [SPEAKER_01]: those are some real fun years.
[01:15:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay. So speaking of Yichiro stories
[01:15:14] [SPEAKER_00]: and you said that he would tell all these hilarious jokes.
[01:15:18] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple Yichiro quotes out there
[01:15:20] [SPEAKER_00]: that I know people still hang on to.
[01:15:22] [SPEAKER_00]: To this day, there's that.
[01:15:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we swear on the tidecast pretty regularly.
[01:15:27] [SPEAKER_00]: But so like there was the whole
[01:15:28] [SPEAKER_00]: who the fuck is Tom Brady quote?
[01:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: And then there was the, I'm going to botch this one.
[01:15:32] [SPEAKER_00]: There was the Kansas City quote about it's it's.
[01:15:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. Do you know what I'm referencing?
[01:15:37] [SPEAKER_00]: It's Kansas.
[01:15:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. That's it.
[01:15:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So when you put those two quotes out there.
[01:15:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, something.
[01:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah. So when he put those two quotes out there
[01:15:47] [SPEAKER_01]: he was hilarious.
[01:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: He I think so were you shocked at all
[01:15:51] [SPEAKER_00]: when he said those two things?
[01:15:52] [SPEAKER_01]: No.
[01:15:54] [SPEAKER_01]: Yes, because he said them out loud.
[01:15:56] [SPEAKER_01]: And normally that was for his teammates only, you know
[01:15:59] [SPEAKER_01]: behind the scenes he would he would share funny stuff with us.
[01:16:05] [SPEAKER_01]: He I remember running out to right field
[01:16:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I think our first game.
[01:16:13] [SPEAKER_01]: I forget who the umpire was though.
[01:16:15] [SPEAKER_01]: Eddie Monogu.
[01:16:16] [SPEAKER_01]: He runs by Eddie Monogu
[01:16:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and Eddie he looked at me.
[01:16:23] [SPEAKER_01]: He goes does each row speak English?
[01:16:24] [SPEAKER_01]: I said, yeah, a little bit.
[01:16:26] [SPEAKER_01]: And Eddie said something to him and he just says, oh,
[01:16:29] [SPEAKER_01]: he says something to him running by like what's
[01:16:31] [SPEAKER_01]: happening home slice and Eddie looks at me
[01:16:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and I start cracking up.
[01:16:36] [SPEAKER_01]: I said he knows a little bit of English
[01:16:38] [SPEAKER_01]: but that's how each row was, you know, it was
[01:16:41] [SPEAKER_01]: it was very endearing.
[01:16:44] [SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, he was very charismatic.
[01:16:47] [SPEAKER_03]: If we had a couple more to wrap up with you here, Brett,
[01:16:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I was thinking in terms of like you as a former
[01:16:52] [SPEAKER_03]: big league hitter looking at today's pitchers.
[01:16:55] [SPEAKER_03]: Who's somebody today that you would really want to face?
[01:16:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Like really enjoy the challenge of facing
[01:17:01] [SPEAKER_03]: and then who is someone you want no business facing?
[01:17:04] [SPEAKER_03]: You're like, no, like this dude's just another
[01:17:07] [SPEAKER_03]: another level.
[01:17:08] [SPEAKER_01]: Right now.
[01:17:10] [SPEAKER_01]: I want the challenge of facing nobody right now.
[01:17:14] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, nobody seems appealing for me to get in a box right now.
[01:17:19] [SPEAKER_01]: I look at somebody like a like a Jason DeGron.
[01:17:22] [SPEAKER_01]: You know when he's healthy and when he's on it's like
[01:17:25] [SPEAKER_01]: I want no part of that.
[01:17:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember about five or six years after I retired
[01:17:30] [SPEAKER_01]: it you know 2012 ish.
[01:17:33] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember going to a game and I forget where we were
[01:17:37] [SPEAKER_01]: might have been saying I went to a game with my dad.
[01:17:39] [SPEAKER_01]: My dad was a VP for the Washington Nationals.
[01:17:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Nationals were in town went down.
[01:17:43] [SPEAKER_01]: We sat on the third base side field level.
[01:17:48] [SPEAKER_01]: So we're right on in the front row field was right there.
[01:17:51] [SPEAKER_01]: We're right at the end of the the nationals dugout
[01:17:54] [SPEAKER_01]: and I remember Stephen Strasberg was pitching.
[01:17:57] [SPEAKER_01]: So I had the side view of him throwing and I remember
[01:18:01] [SPEAKER_01]: looking at my dad and I said I want no part of that
[01:18:05] [SPEAKER_01]: right now and he was throwing it looked like
[01:18:07] [SPEAKER_01]: he was throwing 150 miles an hour.
[01:18:10] [SPEAKER_01]: And when you're out of the game for a little bit
[01:18:12] [SPEAKER_01]: you know you you it catches up with you.
[01:18:17] [SPEAKER_01]: Now I have a son that's in the minor leagues
[01:18:19] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'll go work out with him and I'll jump in the cage
[01:18:21] [SPEAKER_01]: once in a while and it's like they got it cranked up
[01:18:24] [SPEAKER_01]: and I'm like turn that thing down.
[01:18:26] [SPEAKER_01]: I want no part of it that bad feels heavy.
[01:18:29] [SPEAKER_01]: You know I feel old trying to swing but you know
[01:18:32] [SPEAKER_01]: you compete and you don't want to embarrass yourself
[01:18:34] [SPEAKER_01]: but you know father time gets us all.
[01:18:37] [SPEAKER_01]: So there's nobody right now that I really fear
[01:18:40] [SPEAKER_01]: or would have feared as a player.
[01:18:42] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean you take that you take that challenge every night
[01:18:46] [SPEAKER_01]: it's like no it's no fun facing Randy Johnson
[01:18:49] [SPEAKER_01]: but I got to face him tonight and the challenge is
[01:18:51] [SPEAKER_01]: if I can if I can get a piece of you know
[01:18:54] [SPEAKER_01]: facing Maddox Moltson Glavin was no fun.
[01:18:57] [SPEAKER_01]: You got to find a way to work maybe a walk
[01:19:01] [SPEAKER_01]: and a knock because they're the best of the best.
[01:19:04] [SPEAKER_01]: Pedro in his heyday for about three or four years
[01:19:08] [SPEAKER_01]: he was no fun.
[01:19:09] [SPEAKER_01]: I remember facing Kevin Brown in LA that was no fun
[01:19:13] [SPEAKER_01]: that was a big time challenge.
[01:19:16] [SPEAKER_01]: Clements you know was tough.
[01:19:18] [SPEAKER_01]: Shilling late in his career with his split finger.
[01:19:21] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like man I couldn't see that thing
[01:19:23] [SPEAKER_01]: and then there's guys you had a lot of success off
[01:19:26] [SPEAKER_01]: you know and you didn't know why.
[01:19:29] [SPEAKER_01]: There was no rhyme or reason to it
[01:19:31] [SPEAKER_01]: now you know I sit here as a 54 year old
[01:19:34] [SPEAKER_01]: and say yeah absolutely I want to face nobody
[01:19:37] [SPEAKER_01]: but nobody would scare me.
[01:19:39] [SPEAKER_01]: It's like it doesn't bother me but I watched
[01:19:42] [SPEAKER_01]: the Grom when he's when he's on
[01:19:45] [SPEAKER_01]: and it's like different level just a hundred
[01:19:48] [SPEAKER_01]: hitting his spots that's what it's all about
[01:19:50] [SPEAKER_01]: I mean you can throw as hard as you want
[01:19:52] [SPEAKER_01]: it doesn't matter velocity really doesn't matter
[01:19:55] [SPEAKER_01]: it's it's how do you pitch it's how do you pitch
[01:19:59] [SPEAKER_01]: yeah if you can hit the corners and you're a hundred
[01:20:01] [SPEAKER_01]: it's going to be tougher than hitting the corners
[01:20:03] [SPEAKER_01]: if you're 95 but but it is it is what it is today
[01:20:07] [SPEAKER_01]: you know I think it's I think since I retired
[01:20:10] [SPEAKER_01]: it's probably up a tick and a half as far as
[01:20:13] [SPEAKER_01]: as far as mile miles per hour
[01:20:15] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think the main reason for that uptick
[01:20:18] [SPEAKER_01]: is they groom players now to be bullpen guys
[01:20:22] [SPEAKER_01]: were in my day the bullpen was kind of
[01:20:24] [SPEAKER_01]: the guys that weren't good enough to start
[01:20:27] [SPEAKER_01]: now all of a sudden you're drafted as a reliever
[01:20:30] [SPEAKER_01]: and you're you train for one inning to throw
[01:20:33] [SPEAKER_01]: as hard as you can so it's a different game
[01:20:35] [SPEAKER_01]: now it's a different game my my day is
[01:20:38] [SPEAKER_01]: you know and I reference the Maddox most
[01:20:40] [SPEAKER_01]: glad thing we go to Atlanta and our pregame
[01:20:43] [SPEAKER_01]: was let's find a way to knock these guys
[01:20:45] [SPEAKER_01]: out of the game and get in their bullpen
[01:20:47] [SPEAKER_01]: well nowadays sometimes it's going wait a
[01:20:49] [SPEAKER_01]: minute some of these power bullpens it's
[01:20:51] [SPEAKER_01]: like let's beat up on the starter for a
[01:20:53] [SPEAKER_01]: while because we don't want to get into that
[01:20:55] [SPEAKER_01]: bullpen so the games change a little bit
[01:20:57] [SPEAKER_01]: there's a lot of resources and monies that
[01:20:59] [SPEAKER_01]: go into the bullpen whereas in my day
[01:21:02] [SPEAKER_01]: it didn't so the game has changed a little
[01:21:06] [SPEAKER_01]: bit but at the end of the day strikes
[01:21:09] [SPEAKER_01]: a strikes of balls a ball and I talked
[01:21:11] [SPEAKER_01]: to my son you know he's in the minor leagues
[01:21:14] [SPEAKER_01]: and everybody's throwing 95 there
[01:21:16] [SPEAKER_01]: well everybody when I was in the minor leagues
[01:21:18] [SPEAKER_01]: wasn't throwing 95 they were throwing 93
[01:21:20] [SPEAKER_01]: so there's a difference but I said
[01:21:22] [SPEAKER_01]: this is what you grew up on you know
[01:21:24] [SPEAKER_01]: life goes on when my dad played they
[01:21:26] [SPEAKER_01]: didn't they didn't throw as hard as we did
[01:21:28] [SPEAKER_01]: when my grandfather in the 50s was playing
[01:21:31] [SPEAKER_01]: they didn't throw as hard as my dad's generation
[01:21:35] [SPEAKER_01]: and in 2050 you know these players
[01:21:39] [SPEAKER_01]: today are going to be talking about
[01:21:41] [SPEAKER_01]: Jason DeGrom there might be five
[01:21:43] [SPEAKER_01]: Jason DeGroms in in 2050 so life goes
[01:21:46] [SPEAKER_01]: on technology goes on it's human
[01:21:49] [SPEAKER_01]: development I think you see in all the
[01:21:51] [SPEAKER_01]: top sports getting bigger stronger faster
[01:21:53] [SPEAKER_01]: and I think as time goes on and you have
[01:21:56] [SPEAKER_01]: more things at your fingertips training
[01:21:58] [SPEAKER_01]: techniques and dietary way you live
[01:22:01] [SPEAKER_01]: your life sport is always going to get
[01:22:03] [SPEAKER_01]: better and better if it got worse
[01:22:06] [SPEAKER_01]: I'd be worried about what they were doing
[01:22:08] [SPEAKER_01]: and I laugh at older players say oh
[01:22:10] [SPEAKER_01]: we were better than well no you weren't
[01:22:13] [SPEAKER_01]: the athlete that the athlete today is
[01:22:15] [SPEAKER_01]: better than the athlete when I came
[01:22:18] [SPEAKER_01]: into the game and 30 years from now
[01:22:20] [SPEAKER_01]: the athlete then is going to be better
[01:22:22] [SPEAKER_01]: than the athlete now it's just human
[01:22:24] [SPEAKER_01]: development if I had one last question
[01:22:27] [SPEAKER_00]: for you Brett the Mariners are starting
[01:22:29] [SPEAKER_00]: to do these commercials again they
[01:22:31] [SPEAKER_00]: started to do it with the current
[01:22:32] [SPEAKER_00]: group of guys have started to post them
[01:22:34] [SPEAKER_00]: on social media and it got me reminiscing
[01:22:36] [SPEAKER_00]: what's up no no I know I know
[01:22:39] [SPEAKER_01]: sorry to say some yeah those
[01:22:40] [SPEAKER_01]: commercials are great I started to
[01:22:43] [SPEAKER_00]: reminisce all the way back to when
[01:22:45] [SPEAKER_00]: you were playing and they did the
[01:22:47] [SPEAKER_00]: commercials with your team back in the
[01:22:49] [SPEAKER_00]: early 2000s and there's one that always
[01:22:51] [SPEAKER_00]: stuck out like stuck out to me that
[01:22:53] [SPEAKER_00]: you did it was that one where ball
[01:22:55] [SPEAKER_00]: bounces under the second baseman's glove
[01:22:57] [SPEAKER_00]: you're standing at second base and
[01:22:59] [SPEAKER_00]: actually it's my favorite story on a
[01:23:01] [SPEAKER_00]: story you were telling back when you were
[01:23:03] [SPEAKER_00]: on the air yet I think it was 04
[01:23:05] [SPEAKER_00]: and and you say to him make sure don't
[01:23:09] [SPEAKER_00]: worry about it like you're like you're
[01:23:11] [SPEAKER_00]: like people make errors all the time
[01:23:13] [SPEAKER_00]: and the guy says oh even you you said
[01:23:16] [SPEAKER_00]: well not me but guys like you
[01:23:18] [SPEAKER_00]: oh it's common it happens regularly
[01:23:20] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah so long round about
[01:23:23] [SPEAKER_00]: did you enjoy did you enjoy
[01:23:25] [SPEAKER_00]: filming those oh I loved it you know Kevin
[01:23:28] [SPEAKER_01]: Martinez to this day is in charge of
[01:23:30] [SPEAKER_01]: doing those commercials and I had a
[01:23:33] [SPEAKER_01]: great time doing it every year as a
[01:23:35] [SPEAKER_01]: similar crew the same guy would shoot
[01:23:37] [SPEAKER_01]: direct him Kevin Martinez would put
[01:23:39] [SPEAKER_01]: them all together and I go in and
[01:23:41] [SPEAKER_01]: kind of rewrite the script and it
[01:23:43] [SPEAKER_01]: was it was funny I mean because
[01:23:45] [SPEAKER_01]: we go in there and I they'd always let
[01:23:47] [SPEAKER_01]: me put my little touch on to it and I
[01:23:49] [SPEAKER_01]: say I think it'd be funnier if I did
[01:23:51] [SPEAKER_01]: this so they worked with me I had one
[01:23:54] [SPEAKER_01]: where we did the bat flip and I was
[01:23:56] [SPEAKER_01]: flipping everything that was fun I
[01:23:58] [SPEAKER_01]: did one with J. Buehner and it was
[01:24:01] [SPEAKER_01]: Buehner Buzz Head Knight or
[01:24:04] [SPEAKER_01]: something that was a lot of fun that
[01:24:06] [SPEAKER_01]: was a long night we had a few beers
[01:24:08] [SPEAKER_01]: back then and then there was the
[01:24:10] [SPEAKER_01]: one you're talking about which I is
[01:24:12] [SPEAKER_01]: still my favorite because it was
[01:24:14] [SPEAKER_01]: so what I would say back then you know
[01:24:17] [SPEAKER_01]: of course I would say it in a
[01:24:19] [SPEAKER_01]: kidding manner but my teammates would
[01:24:21] [SPEAKER_01]: expect me to have that that kind of
[01:24:24] [SPEAKER_01]: cocky edge and my persona when I was
[01:24:27] [SPEAKER_01]: when I was in Seattle you know I had
[01:24:29] [SPEAKER_01]: the reputation to be in that crash but
[01:24:31] [SPEAKER_01]: but it was more of a shtick it was
[01:24:33] [SPEAKER_01]: what I did it was what everybody
[01:24:35] [SPEAKER_01]: expected me to do I didn't take
[01:24:37] [SPEAKER_01]: myself too serious I had a lot of fun
[01:24:39] [SPEAKER_01]: with it I had the frosted hair
[01:24:41] [SPEAKER_01]: back then and my answer to everybody was
[01:24:44] [SPEAKER_01]: the city expects me to have frosted
[01:24:46] [SPEAKER_01]: hair so that's why I do it every three
[01:24:48] [SPEAKER_01]: weeks but that was just hard of being
[01:24:50] [SPEAKER_01]: young and fun and having a good time
[01:24:52] [SPEAKER_01]: with my teammates. Well Brett this has
[01:24:54] [SPEAKER_01]: been awesome we have had a blast
