[00:01:04] Let's get it rolling.

[00:01:17] And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Layer Podcast part of the

[00:01:20] Just Baseball Podcast Network recording here Thursday afternoon, April 25th and

[00:01:26] the demons in Arlington have been exercised.

[00:01:30] I thought I might never see another win in Texas ever again, ever until this week.

[00:01:35] Well, considering they lost eight in a row last year there, which carried into

[00:01:40] this series, but hey, eight mostly uncompetitive games.

[00:01:45] Man that last weekend.

[00:01:47] Like I know they lost other games down in Texas last year, but I cannot

[00:01:52] get that final series in Texas out of my head where it was just a pummeling

[00:01:59] with the Rangers score and run after run after run after run.

[00:02:02] I'm glad that's over for now.

[00:02:05] Yeah, yeah.

[00:02:06] And you know, the best thing about this series is out like the Mariners didn't

[00:02:10] play amazing.

[00:02:11] They played good enough.

[00:02:12] They hit home runs in opportune times twice.

[00:02:15] They hit two to run home runs in a game and that was it.

[00:02:17] That's what they needed on Tuesdays game.

[00:02:21] And then on today's game on Thursday, two pairs of two run home runs was

[00:02:26] enough to get the job done.

[00:02:27] What do we keep saying?

[00:02:28] You got to hit the ball over the fence and you got a pitch well.

[00:02:30] And the Mariners did that in each of those two games and the game.

[00:02:33] They didn't do that.

[00:02:34] They lost.

[00:02:35] I was, you know, I was kind of disappointed.

[00:02:37] We'll talk about the pitching staff in our second storyline, but I was

[00:02:40] a little disappointed in Bryce Miller's performance.

[00:02:42] I wanted to see like that was the last demon he really felt like he

[00:02:46] needed to exercise besides almost the large sample of pitching this

[00:02:50] season and pitching through a heavy workload this season.

[00:02:53] I wanted to see him go face the Texas Rangers in pitch well.

[00:02:57] Unfortunately, that wasn't really the case.

[00:03:00] He was off, didn't have his best stuff, didn't have his best control

[00:03:03] and ended up having a pretty poor outing after just four innings on

[00:03:07] Wednesday.

[00:03:08] But outside of that man, how about these pitchers who are like that

[00:03:11] were able to go in there and in Texas and get do what they needed to do?

[00:03:17] And Luis certainly did not have his best stuff on Thursday.

[00:03:20] The fact he gave them six and two is a lot through four innings.

[00:03:24] It didn't look like he was even going to get through five.

[00:03:28] And they instead gave him six innings of two run ball.

[00:03:31] Very much kept him in the game.

[00:03:33] Bullpen takes care of the rest.

[00:03:35] So that's what Bryce Miller, Bryce Miller didn't have his best

[00:03:38] outing, but that's what Luis Castillo is doing when he is off.

[00:03:42] He's not that far off track from getting on.

[00:03:45] And this rotation we've seen has taken massive steps forward over

[00:03:48] the last couple of weeks, which we'll talk about and they can still get better.

[00:03:53] Didn't hear from Corey or Marcus all series either.

[00:03:56] That was nice.

[00:03:57] I'm also so glad that series in Texas is over, not just because

[00:04:01] the Rangers hit the ball like crazy in that ballpark.

[00:04:05] I hate that camera angle so much in Texas.

[00:04:09] I cannot bear to look at it.

[00:04:12] It is so miserable.

[00:04:13] Like it's it looks like you're like watching from a bird's eye view zoomed out.

[00:04:17] Like why don't why don't the Rangers give other teams the capacity to zoom

[00:04:22] in like a normal broadcast?

[00:04:25] OK, maybe this is an unpopular opinion.

[00:04:27] I really I don't hate that camera angle that much.

[00:04:29] I kind of like it right behind the pitcher.

[00:04:32] Is that unpopular?

[00:04:33] No, I hate it.

[00:04:34] I've seen a lot and I've seen a lot of people talk that they

[00:04:36] hate that. But I don't know if that's that big a deal to me.

[00:04:40] It might look like every fly ball people hit in the sound it makes.

[00:04:45] Rook of shaying around that ballpark makes a lot of hits sound like home runs,

[00:04:48] even though they're not you could probably nitpick that the camera angle,

[00:04:52] though, like I like it right behind the player right behind the pitcher.

[00:04:57] OK, here's the only thing when the World Series was there,

[00:05:00] Fox didn't have that problem with the camera angle.

[00:05:03] They had the normal one.

[00:05:04] So did Fox get special treatment because it's the World Series?

[00:05:07] If the answer is yes, that means there is a capability

[00:05:10] to just have the normal angle.

[00:05:11] I don't know.

[00:05:12] I'm nitpicking about something the same way we spent the first 10 minutes

[00:05:16] of Wednesday show talking about roofs, but I know I'm not alone on this.

[00:05:21] On this take, I do not like those zoomed out camera angle at all.

[00:05:25] Like aren't there has to be a worse one.

[00:05:28] Fine, you're worse one.

[00:05:30] I don't think so.

[00:05:32] Man, wasn't it when we were like in the mid 2000s,

[00:05:36] wasn't the Orioles one like on the left side of the pitcher?

[00:05:39] Is that do I have that right at Camden?

[00:05:42] Nothing in the right one.

[00:05:44] There was one ballpark where it was on the left side.

[00:05:48] Yeah, you might be right, but I guess from my memory,

[00:05:53] I can't recall.

[00:05:54] I can recall having a look at this Texas angle way too often.

[00:05:58] I I drop a comment whether you feel one way or the other.

[00:06:02] If you're listening, if you're watching on YouTube, which you should be,

[00:06:04] drop a comment.

[00:06:05] If you like the camera angle, if you don't like the camera angle,

[00:06:07] genuinely, we are interested to hear.

[00:06:09] I know that people have talked about they don't like it.

[00:06:12] I will say the only way I'd say you get a true

[00:06:16] a true behind the pitcher angles like that,

[00:06:19] you'd have to be that high so you can see everything.

[00:06:23] I feel like you can see everything perfectly well with the normal ones.

[00:06:27] Well, you can, but it's a little deceiving when it comes

[00:06:31] to looking at the movement horizontally of especially

[00:06:34] with like a right handed slider.

[00:06:36] You don't get a you don't get like a true visual of a matte brush.

[00:06:39] So like a matte brush slider looks better on that Texas angle

[00:06:42] than it would on a T-Mobile Park angle

[00:06:44] just because of where the camera is positioned.

[00:06:47] Maybe that's true, but I that's one minor thing for the most part.

[00:06:53] It is much more visually appealing.

[00:06:55] I think when it's more zoomed in like the Seattle angle

[00:06:58] or pretty much any other angle.

[00:06:59] So no, no, no, that's my that's my take that we probably wasted

[00:07:04] too much time on and nobody really cares about.

[00:07:07] But I still have the feeling anyway.

[00:07:11] Let's get to our Mariners storylines on the negative front.

[00:07:15] We'll start off with JP Crawford hitting the injured list today on Thursday

[00:07:21] yesterday on Thursday when you'll be listening to this.

[00:07:24] So he has a great one oblique strain.

[00:07:27] He will be out a few weeks.

[00:07:29] We don't know exactly how long obliques are not easy injuries

[00:07:33] to get over. It can take a while to come back.

[00:07:36] It can nag throughout the season, depending on who you are.

[00:07:40] And this sucks.

[00:07:42] This is tough in a lot of ways for the Mariners.

[00:07:46] You know, for as well as they've started to play,

[00:07:48] they've had that injury bugs start to build up here.

[00:07:51] The guys that are not playing right now for the Mariners,

[00:07:54] Matt Brash, Gregory Santos, Brian Wu, Dom Kanzon and now JP Crawford.

[00:08:00] So credit to the Mariners for playing the way they've played recently.

[00:08:04] But having all these guys now missing time is not good.

[00:08:08] I know Brash is getting close. I know Wu's getting close.

[00:08:10] Those are five pretty key guys of your team that now are on the shelf.

[00:08:14] I'm just thinking about how this affects the lineup.

[00:08:16] Like think about how your lineup is now with JP out.

[00:08:19] So like Julio has turned it around a little bit,

[00:08:22] but in terms of the other core guys that you have to rely upon now,

[00:08:27] like so first of all, Cal just had a broken tooth this week,

[00:08:31] had it removed and is playing through an excruciating amount of pain

[00:08:34] to get in the lineup and actually play this week.

[00:08:38] So you have that, then you have Ty Frantz who until Thursday

[00:08:42] didn't hit for any, hasn't hit for really any power,

[00:08:44] has been hitting the ball hard, but has not been elevating it

[00:08:47] till he finally hit his first home run of the season on Thursday.

[00:08:50] You have Mitch Garver who's continuing to struggle.

[00:08:53] And then over the last week, Mitch Hanegr,

[00:08:54] who they split up in the cleanup spot today with JP out,

[00:08:57] has a WRC plus of negative 13 the last week.

[00:09:02] So I'm looking at this lineup without JP Crawford,

[00:09:04] who had struggled this year, but let's remember guys,

[00:09:08] JP Crawford had the best WRC plus on the team last year

[00:09:12] and led the American League in walks.

[00:09:13] You're taking that out of the leadoff spot

[00:09:16] and it hurts the rest of the lineup by not having JP up there,

[00:09:19] even if he's not at full strength because, you know,

[00:09:21] odds are JP was going to turn it around

[00:09:23] and now you won't have that until they'll be lucky

[00:09:26] if he's back by June 1st, I would say.

[00:09:28] So we'll see.

[00:09:31] He was starting to turn it around last seven games.

[00:09:34] He was hitting 286.

[00:09:35] OPS was close to 800.

[00:09:36] So last seven games, you started to see him figure some stuff out.

[00:09:40] Unfortunately, this injury comes at a very inopportune time

[00:09:43] when the Mariners desperately need him

[00:09:45] and right when he was starting to figure some things out.

[00:09:47] Yeah, it hasn't been the greatest first month of the year

[00:09:50] for JP Crawford.

[00:09:51] He's barely slugging 300.

[00:09:52] But I seem to recall it was about June of last year

[00:09:56] when he started to really take off.

[00:09:58] He also didn't miss any time by June of last year.

[00:10:01] He had all those abats accumulate before finally something

[00:10:04] finally something shifted.

[00:10:06] Now he's going to miss a few weeks and that doesn't help the team.

[00:10:09] Not only does it change the top of the lineup,

[00:10:11] but you're missing like you said, TJ,

[00:10:15] arguably your most important player.

[00:10:18] Julio might be your best player,

[00:10:20] especially when you look at last year.

[00:10:22] I think JP was the most important player.

[00:10:23] The table setter top of the lineup relied upon even when the rest

[00:10:27] of the offense was struggling a lot of last year.

[00:10:30] He was Mr. Dependable.

[00:10:31] Now he's not going to be playing for three, four ish weeks.

[00:10:36] Should we bring out some moneyball quotes?

[00:10:39] If we're going to recreate him in the aggregate,

[00:10:41] should we recreate JP Crawford in the aggregate?

[00:10:43] OK, Lyle, we're not going to have Crawford.

[00:10:47] The 380 on base percentage.

[00:10:49] Forget about it.

[00:10:50] We won't be able to replace it with one player,

[00:10:52] but man, we can piece that together.

[00:10:55] They're actually, I don't think,

[00:10:56] can piece that together on this 26 man roster right now.

[00:10:59] I'm actually kind of curious.

[00:11:01] I'm going to let you respond here in a second,

[00:11:03] but I'm curious.

[00:11:04] So I was thinking about this.

[00:11:05] So last year at a 380 on base,

[00:11:07] batting out of the leadoff spot.

[00:11:09] So that's gone now.

[00:11:10] I'm trying to think of other guys who could replicate

[00:11:12] on this roster who could have a 380 on base percentage.

[00:11:15] There's really only one, right?

[00:11:16] It's only Julio.

[00:11:17] But the thing is we wanted Julio to drive in

[00:11:21] the 380 on base guy, not for Julio having to supply

[00:11:25] the 380 on base himself.

[00:11:27] Right? That makes sense.

[00:11:30] Garver had a 370 last year,

[00:11:32] but I think you and I watching him this year know

[00:11:34] he's not having a 370 on base again.

[00:11:36] I'll be shocked.

[00:11:38] You're making that conclusion on April 25th.

[00:11:41] 370 on base.

[00:11:43] Well, that was a career.

[00:11:44] Hi, by the way, of Mitch Garver's last year.

[00:11:47] So maybe some of you say odds are he's not going to have a

[00:11:49] career high on base percentage this year.

[00:11:50] It could get up there, but it won't be 370.

[00:11:53] And that's the closest I could imagine to somebody

[00:11:56] replicating what JP does on the base paths.

[00:11:58] Right? So that's how I'm sitting here and thinking

[00:12:01] why this is such a tough conundrum because it's

[00:12:03] not something you can just replace.

[00:12:07] Leo Reeves is going to serve as a bench guy

[00:12:10] and he'll get some starts every now and then.

[00:12:11] But yeah, he is not a JP Crawford replacement.

[00:12:15] For those who don't know, Leo Reeves is who the Mariners

[00:12:17] called up to replace Crawford while he's on the IL.

[00:12:20] Play shortstop came up for most of his young career

[00:12:23] in the Reds organization.

[00:12:24] He never got to the big leagues after 2022.

[00:12:27] He elected free agency signed with the Mariners

[00:12:30] spent 2023 in Arkansas actually got off to a really

[00:12:32] good start this year into coma.

[00:12:34] He was OPSing well over 800.

[00:12:37] He was hitting over 300 in about an 18 game sample.

[00:12:40] And now he's called up.

[00:12:42] He is not going to replace JP Crawford,

[00:12:44] but you hope you can just get something out of the guy.

[00:12:47] And the biggest thing there is he does play shortstop.

[00:12:50] That's why I think the Mariners went with him.

[00:12:52] Not some odd Taylor, not Sam Hagerty,

[00:12:55] not Michael Chavis who's been hitting really well in Tacoma.

[00:12:58] They said we need a shortstop and that's what Reeves is.

[00:13:01] Because Demos now going to pick up most of the

[00:13:05] most of the most of the time at shortstop.

[00:13:09] So and he's the only other guy on this roster who can play shortstop.

[00:13:14] The bad is what worries me.

[00:13:15] It worries me so much because we so we got like a very brief time

[00:13:21] where the Mariners lineup was at full strength.

[00:13:23] I don't know exactly when this Mariners lineup is going to be back at full

[00:13:28] strength because the big difference in what we keyed on in the preseason of

[00:13:32] how this team could be different is the fact the lineup would be better than

[00:13:35] next season while the pitching staff remains excellent.

[00:13:38] So at best case scenario, the Mariners lineup is back at full strength in a month.

[00:13:44] But there's a lot of time between now and then other things can happen.

[00:13:47] Unfortunately injuries do suck.

[00:13:49] What they do happen as you mentioned is piled up here in this lineup.

[00:13:53] You cross your fingers and hope nothing happens between now and June 1st

[00:13:56] and they can be healthy until then because otherwise it's just going to

[00:14:00] be hard for them to unlock their potential with so many of these guys

[00:14:04] missing all this time and unable to get into a groove.

[00:14:07] That's a lot of pressure on that rotation too.

[00:14:10] If the offense is not hitting.

[00:14:12] So they're going to have to find ways to get runs across.

[00:14:15] And as if there isn't enough pressure on Julio already, man, like we can put

[00:14:20] in put a little bit of pressure on him and here it's like when he's

[00:14:23] struggling early, it's like, you know, your Julio Rodriguez, of course,

[00:14:26] your expectations are way higher than everyone else's.

[00:14:30] So we'll hold you to those expectations when you're not playing well.

[00:14:34] We'll say, hey, listen, you're not playing well.

[00:14:36] And now he has to play even better.

[00:14:37] That MVP season we're waiting to unlock with Julio, it's more important

[00:14:42] now than ever that he does that because if he can't, it's going to be

[00:14:46] really hard for this team to consistently score runs.

[00:14:50] And all more reason they really need some of these other guys to step up.

[00:14:55] Ty France hitting his first home run on Thursday.

[00:14:57] Awesome to see more of that.

[00:14:59] I know he's been unlucky and we talked about that on a recent

[00:15:01] show that he has hit the ball hard, launch angles right.

[00:15:04] He just needs to elevate more.

[00:15:05] Hopefully we're starting to see those underlying numbers turn into results

[00:15:10] and Ty France starts to take off because they need him.

[00:15:12] Mitch Garver, they desperately need him to get going.

[00:15:16] What did Jason Churchill say?

[00:15:17] What did I say in the off season?

[00:15:19] This could be the most important bat not named Julio, but for

[00:15:22] Garver to do that, he has to play like the Mitch Garver that

[00:15:24] the Mariners signed him to be.

[00:15:25] Not the guy he's at right now or his OPS is sitting in the 500.

[00:15:28] So he needs to get going.

[00:15:30] Mitch Hannegar, I know he's had a tough week.

[00:15:32] He's got to turn it around.

[00:15:33] There is a lot of support that has to be had for Julio Rodriguez,

[00:15:36] especially with JP Crawford out for the Mariners to keep playing well.

[00:15:40] The guys are going to have to start hitting better.

[00:15:42] Do we think there's any chance any other infielders in the

[00:15:45] minors come up?

[00:15:45] Like I don't really think so.

[00:15:47] Like I don't know if Bliss would come up between now and June

[00:15:52] first when JP comes back.

[00:15:55] Because again, and we talked about Bliss too, I think with him,

[00:15:59] he cannot be the product of necessity and desperation.

[00:16:04] You need to let Ryan Bliss develop so he can be the player he's

[00:16:08] capable of being when he's fully ready to answer your question.

[00:16:11] We talked about this over text a little bit recently.

[00:16:14] I know he's not currently on the 40 man roster.

[00:16:16] My guess is if we see another infielder, that's not one of

[00:16:19] the utility guys in Hagerty or some odd Taylor, it'd be

[00:16:22] Michael Chavis because he has big league time.

[00:16:24] He's had some big league success in the past and he's

[00:16:27] really crushed the ball into coma so far.

[00:16:29] That feels like somebody that could be an option.

[00:16:32] I know third base is solidified right now with the platoon,

[00:16:34] but Chavis can play second.

[00:16:36] I'm sure he could play some first.

[00:16:37] So if he continues to hit, maybe you see him and is that a

[00:16:40] slide Rojas over to short situation?

[00:16:43] You think can you double up on the two righties at third

[00:16:47] base and the way the 40 man set up now that Reeve us is

[00:16:51] on the 40 man.

[00:16:52] I assume they did when he goes down, he's getting DFA'd.

[00:16:55] I don't think they would option him back down the triple.

[00:16:57] They'd reopen that 40 man spot that Santos cleared up by

[00:17:01] going on the 60 day and then you put Chavis on the 40 man

[00:17:04] and then you'd have Chavis until Santos is ready,

[00:17:07] essentially on the 40 man.

[00:17:09] I'd say it depends on how Revis plays.

[00:17:11] If Revis proves that he's valuable, they won't do a

[00:17:14] fan if he's only a stock gap and is here to be a

[00:17:18] bench guy, then probably yeah.

[00:17:20] Yeah, we'll see.

[00:17:22] This is going to be an important four week stretch.

[00:17:24] Let's say four weeks.

[00:17:25] It's going to be four week.

[00:17:26] We'll do the safe guess that it's going to be four weeks

[00:17:29] between the next time we see JP Crawford on the field.

[00:17:31] Best probably best case, but we'll throw that number there.

[00:17:35] Yeah.

[00:17:36] Then it is very important these next four weeks that they

[00:17:39] don't let the offense sort of crater without his bat in there.

[00:17:44] Absolutely.

[00:17:45] And look, timetable could be different.

[00:17:48] There's different, you know, there's there's different

[00:17:50] timetables out there depending on where you look up,

[00:17:53] recovery time of a grade one oblique strain.

[00:17:56] MLB.com says about 27 days.

[00:17:58] There's some other sites that say two to three weeks.

[00:18:00] Obviously two weeks would be best, best case scenario, but feels unlikely.

[00:18:04] So yeah, like TJ said, four weeks feels about right.

[00:18:09] And let's hope by then the Mariners are still holding, holding

[00:18:11] serve with their offense because they're going to need to.

[00:18:14] Yeah.

[00:18:15] Before we transition into our second storyline, let's talk to

[00:18:18] you guys about our friends over at Pagaches pub 85.

[00:18:21] That's over in Kirkland.

[00:18:22] We keep talking about get out there, watch a game this year.

[00:18:25] It's fun.

[00:18:26] It's an awesome time to go spend with your friends.

[00:18:28] It's an awesome venue, awesome environment.

[00:18:31] Go hang out, go watch the Mariners games, go have a, to go

[00:18:33] have a great meal and get some great drink specials too.

[00:18:36] If you get there on Monday through Friday during happy hour,

[00:18:38] that's from two to six PM.

[00:18:40] You get some great specials at $3 domestic beers, $4 manis

[00:18:44] blue moons, $4 Mackinjacks, $4 Wells and $4 house wines all over

[00:18:49] at Pagaches pub 85 in Kirkland.

[00:18:52] Say goodbye to your credit card rewards.

[00:18:54] Greedy corporate megastores led by Walmart and Target are

[00:18:58] pushing for a law in Congress to take away your hard earned

[00:19:01] cash back and travel points to line their pockets.

[00:19:04] The Durbin Marshall credit card bill would enact harmful

[00:19:07] credit card routing mandates that would end credit card

[00:19:10] rewards as we know it.

[00:19:12] If you love your credit card rewards, tell your lawmakers

[00:19:15] hands off my rewards.

[00:19:17] Tell them to oppose the Durbin Marshall credit card bill.

[00:19:22] So our second storyline, much more positive pitching staff.

[00:19:27] We talked about the first couple turns through the rotation.

[00:19:30] Very, very uninspiring.

[00:19:32] Last two weeks, it's been the best in baseball.

[00:19:34] The Mariners rotation is back to being the Mariners rotation.

[00:19:39] At the end of the brewery series, do you remember what

[00:19:42] your ERA was?

[00:19:43] I do because we both do prep for the show team.

[00:19:46] So they were well, okay.

[00:19:50] Well, okay.

[00:19:51] So we may have slightly different notes that we wrote out.

[00:19:54] The Mariners or the Mariners starters ERA through the first

[00:19:57] two weeks of the season was 28th in baseball.

[00:19:59] It was at about 5.8.

[00:20:02] Now through the last two weeks is first in baseball at 151.

[00:20:07] Yeah, pretty good.

[00:20:08] It's pretty good.

[00:20:09] Just remarkable the heel turn it's done and there were

[00:20:11] a smattering of good performances through the first

[00:20:14] two turns through, but that's it because especially that

[00:20:18] second turn through, right?

[00:20:19] Like vividly remember after the brewery series, like, man,

[00:20:22] this can't be.

[00:20:23] This cannot happen.

[00:20:24] And it is not state.

[00:20:25] It have turned around and they've been remarkable and all

[00:20:28] been remarkable in their different ways.

[00:20:30] Even with Bryce Miller having his first, you know,

[00:20:32] pretty bad start in Texas, they have gone one through five

[00:20:36] and they've all shown different ways to be successful.

[00:20:40] Even Emerson Hancock, not originally supposed to be

[00:20:43] in this rotation coming up and performing exceptionally well

[00:20:47] and giving these guys a chance to go every single one

[00:20:50] of these guys could go six innings.

[00:20:52] They could strike guys out.

[00:20:53] They can limit walks and they could do everything

[00:20:55] necessary to help this team win games.

[00:20:58] And it's not like it's absolutely a fact now that

[00:21:01] this is the best rotation in baseball.

[00:21:03] I like who else is matching this?

[00:21:05] Nick, nobody else matches the upside of what

[00:21:09] this rotation brings when everyone is pitching their

[00:21:11] best of days as they've shown this season without

[00:21:13] even considering Brian Wu, the Mariners have four

[00:21:16] number ones in the rotation.

[00:21:18] The conversation ends right there for number ones.

[00:21:22] Luis Castillo, number one, George Kirby, number one,

[00:21:25] Logan Gilbert, number one and the newly minted Bryce

[00:21:29] Miller when he's at his best this season with that

[00:21:31] splitter, he is a number one.

[00:21:35] Pretty good.

[00:21:36] Some might argue the Phillies that rotation has gotten

[00:21:38] off to a good start, but the upside of it is not

[00:21:40] what the Mariners upside is.

[00:21:42] By the way, they've pitched like this the last

[00:21:45] two weeks still without either George Kirby or

[00:21:48] Luis Castillo at their best.

[00:21:49] We've seen Logan Gilbert be one of the best in

[00:21:51] baseball.

[00:21:51] We've seen Bryce Miller outside of this Ranger

[00:21:53] star be one of the best in baseball.

[00:21:55] There are two top dogs in the rotation are not

[00:21:59] pitching the way yet that we all know they're

[00:22:01] capable of doing and we all know they're

[00:22:03] going to get to now when those two guys start

[00:22:05] to pitch like we know they can pitch, they

[00:22:08] get even better.

[00:22:09] And when Brian Wu steps back on a big league

[00:22:11] diamond, they get even better.

[00:22:14] So I say this again every time we talk about

[00:22:17] the rotation, I'm going to I'm probably going

[00:22:18] to use this line.

[00:22:19] Please just get into the playoffs, get in

[00:22:23] the field if it's the last wildcard get the

[00:22:24] last wildcard, but this rotation can take you

[00:22:27] the entire freaking way.

[00:22:29] So just find a way to get in because this is

[00:22:32] the best rotation in baseball.

[00:22:34] So I went through and counted yesterday.

[00:22:35] Look, Logan Gilbert, I think is the number three

[00:22:38] pitcher in this Mariners rotation.

[00:22:40] I went through and looked how many teams

[00:22:42] with Logan Gilbert be a number one on.

[00:22:45] I counted, I came up with 19 teams.

[00:22:49] He would be the best pitcher on the best starter

[00:22:51] on it's pretty, it's a pretty remarkable number.

[00:22:53] There could be some debate in there, but

[00:22:55] even if we say 16 to 19, how remarkable is

[00:22:58] that man?

[00:22:59] How remarkable it is?

[00:23:00] And here's another fun experiment.

[00:23:02] You pull up everyone's baseball, savant page

[00:23:04] and you look at all the different qualities

[00:23:06] they have.

[00:23:07] And the best thing you can do what we

[00:23:10] hammer this point home all the time.

[00:23:11] The best thing you can do is be not average,

[00:23:14] be as less what's what's the right term least average.

[00:23:18] Unique.

[00:23:18] Unique.

[00:23:18] Unique.

[00:23:19] Unique.

[00:23:19] Unique.

[00:23:20] Be as unique as possible and certainly they are.

[00:23:24] Every single one is unique or really good at

[00:23:27] something.

[00:23:27] Emerson Hancock, not walking anybody.

[00:23:29] Great.

[00:23:29] Luis Castillo, his breaking ball run value

[00:23:32] this year, 96th percentile.

[00:23:35] Logan Gilbert, well he's actually been just

[00:23:37] elated everything.

[00:23:38] He is 100th percentile in pitching run value.

[00:23:41] So out of all pitchers, in terms of preventing runs,

[00:23:44] Logan Gilbert is your guy.

[00:23:47] George Kirby, fastball run value, 93rd percentile.

[00:23:50] Bryce Miller, where's Bryce?

[00:23:52] Did I pass Bryce?

[00:23:53] Uh-oh.

[00:23:53] Uh-oh.

[00:23:54] Oh here's Bryce.

[00:23:55] He is 96th percentile in pitching run value.

[00:23:58] Isn't that unbelievable like in elite stat from

[00:24:01] every all five players in your rotation?

[00:24:04] Yeah, it is.

[00:24:04] I mean, I should say it is believable

[00:24:06] because we know how good this rotation can be.

[00:24:08] But when you actually lay it out like that and

[00:24:11] map it out like that, yes.

[00:24:13] I don't want to put you on the spot here if you

[00:24:15] if you are going to be put on the spot.

[00:24:18] But you said 19 teams, Logan Gilbert would be

[00:24:21] their number one.

[00:24:21] Do you have them written down or like do you

[00:24:23] have the 11, you don't have them written down?

[00:24:25] No.

[00:24:25] All right.

[00:24:26] We're just going to kind of go through a fun

[00:24:27] exercise anyway.

[00:24:28] Let's say the 11 teams where he wouldn't be the

[00:24:32] ace.

[00:24:32] Like so if I'm just going down by divisions,

[00:24:34] I'm guessing you still had Framber Valdez over

[00:24:36] him in Houston or or Verlander like one of those

[00:24:39] guys.

[00:24:39] Yeah, I believe I had.

[00:24:41] I had him on Houston.

[00:24:43] Yeah.

[00:24:43] But if you like give me like as you rattle off

[00:24:45] teams, I'll pull up the standings.

[00:24:47] Yeah.

[00:24:48] So like I'd say Frambers probably won in Houston.

[00:24:52] Shane Bieber's injured in Cleveland right now.

[00:24:54] But maybe that factored into your equation of

[00:24:56] since he is injured.

[00:24:57] He I honestly can't remember.

[00:24:59] I think I might have given Bieber the nod.

[00:25:01] Okay.

[00:25:02] I would have given him like, hey, he like let's

[00:25:04] pretend he's healthy.

[00:25:05] I'd give him the nod.

[00:25:05] He is a Cy Young.

[00:25:06] Yeah.

[00:25:07] So Bieber, Garrett Cole.

[00:25:10] Yeah.

[00:25:12] Gosmin.

[00:25:13] I yeah, I didn't put him over Gosmin.

[00:25:15] I did not put him over Burns.

[00:25:17] I put him as the number one on the rays and

[00:25:19] the Red Sox.

[00:25:20] Yeah.

[00:25:21] And then if you go over to the NL, I mean

[00:25:23] Yamamoto or Glass Now, I'm guessing still

[00:25:25] gets the edge there.

[00:25:26] Yeah.

[00:25:27] Did you give Logan the edge over that

[00:25:30] Giants rotation?

[00:25:31] Like obviously Blake's not as I did not put him

[00:25:33] over web.

[00:25:33] I did not put him over Logan Webb.

[00:25:35] Logan was pretty, pretty good.

[00:25:37] Yeah.

[00:25:37] Oh, so Logan Webb.

[00:25:39] Yeah.

[00:25:39] Well, I was going to say Blake's now with the

[00:25:40] two snow, but yeah, not he's not the

[00:25:43] number one on the Giants.

[00:25:44] Right.

[00:25:45] Is he the number one on the D-back?

[00:25:46] So for Zach Allen, you know, Kelly.

[00:25:48] Okay.

[00:25:48] No.

[00:25:48] So you have gallon over Logan Gilbert there.

[00:25:50] He would be on the Padres.

[00:25:52] Yes.

[00:25:53] And he would be on the Rockies.

[00:25:54] I will say Dylan Cease has gotten off to a

[00:25:56] good start, very good start, but we can

[00:25:58] take Logan.

[00:25:59] That's right.

[00:25:59] That's fine.

[00:26:01] Okay.

[00:26:01] And all central, this is actually just kind

[00:26:03] of a fun exercise to run through.

[00:26:04] He would be better than most of the central,

[00:26:06] I would say he would.

[00:26:08] I for him and Freddie, I can't remember if

[00:26:10] I picked him over Freddie Peralta.

[00:26:12] It's close.

[00:26:13] Mm hmm.

[00:26:14] Yeah.

[00:26:14] Freddie's pretty good.

[00:26:16] I put him as the number one on the Cubs.

[00:26:19] I put him as the number one on the Reds

[00:26:21] and the Pirates maybe until Skeens comes

[00:26:23] up and then the Cardinals.

[00:26:25] Yeah.

[00:26:25] And then you go and at least at Billy's

[00:26:28] rotation is really good.

[00:26:29] So Logan's probably not over Zach Wheeler,

[00:26:31] but Marlin, Raves know because I'm pretending

[00:26:34] Sprider, Strider still healthy.

[00:26:36] But the other three, yeah, he's the number one.

[00:26:38] Mets, Marlins and Nationals.

[00:26:40] Yeah.

[00:26:40] Yep.

[00:26:41] Yeah, that's Logan Gilbert's the number

[00:26:43] one on a lot of teams right now.

[00:26:45] Like look at this.

[00:26:46] Logan Gilbert is first in the American League

[00:26:50] in batting average against opponents are

[00:26:51] hitting 161 against him.

[00:26:53] He's fourth in baseball and whip.

[00:26:55] This guy is 100% in the Cy Young

[00:26:58] conversation right now.

[00:26:59] It's about a month into the year.

[00:27:01] There's a long ways to go, but he is

[00:27:03] absolutely in the Cy Young conversation

[00:27:05] right now.

[00:27:05] There's a lot of guys in the American

[00:27:07] League that have gotten off to really

[00:27:08] good starts like Cutter Crawford, for

[00:27:09] example, off to an awesome start.

[00:27:11] But Logan Gilbert's very much in the

[00:27:14] running right now.

[00:27:15] You know why this is so important?

[00:27:16] Because the Mariners sneakily already

[00:27:18] have a gauntlet of teams they're

[00:27:20] right in the midst of.

[00:27:21] So the Mariners just finished the three

[00:27:23] game series with the Rangers who are

[00:27:26] the number 12 team in WRC plus this

[00:27:28] season and the Mariners took two of

[00:27:29] three. That's great.

[00:27:31] However, so the Mariners already

[00:27:34] this season had faced four top 10

[00:27:36] offenses by WRC plus.

[00:27:39] They split with the Guardians and

[00:27:41] then they lost series to the Cubs

[00:27:43] Blue Jays and Brewers.

[00:27:45] So that's a negative right there.

[00:27:48] However, they have a chance to make

[00:27:50] up with it because they now

[00:27:52] starting tonight against the Arizona

[00:27:54] Diamondbacks have three more in a row

[00:27:57] that are in the top 10.

[00:27:58] The Diamondbacks, the Braves and

[00:28:00] the Houston Astros. The Astros have

[00:28:01] been kind of garbage this year, but

[00:28:04] they still are mashed the baseball.

[00:28:06] So it's a big, big week and a half.

[00:28:10] Surprised the Diamondbacks are a top

[00:28:11] 10 offense. I mean, numbers never

[00:28:13] lie, but I'm surprised they are.

[00:28:14] Because yeah, you see Corbin's been

[00:28:17] swinging like a cardboard tube since

[00:28:19] last June.

[00:28:20] So I don't want to say anything too

[00:28:23] negative because spoiler alert, we're

[00:28:25] trying to talk to them and do some

[00:28:27] content with them this weekend.

[00:28:28] Like a little spoiler alert.

[00:28:30] One thing that TJ and I have wanted

[00:28:31] to implement this year into some of

[00:28:33] our social content is along with

[00:28:35] all the player content we do with

[00:28:36] the Mariners, we thought it would

[00:28:37] be fun to get some of the Pacific

[00:28:39] Northwest guys that grew up in the

[00:28:41] in the area that are on other teams

[00:28:43] and when they come into town, do

[00:28:44] some Mariners content with them.

[00:28:45] So who would be first on that

[00:28:47] list this year? Well, the

[00:28:48] Diamondbacks are in town, Corbin

[00:28:50] Carroll. So I don't want to,

[00:28:52] you know, I don't want to rip the

[00:28:54] guy and we know look when he's at

[00:28:57] his best, he's one of the best

[00:28:58] players in this entire sport.

[00:29:00] But he is off to a really tough

[00:29:02] start to begin the year.

[00:29:03] And like you said, he is off.

[00:29:05] He's had a tough go of it since

[00:29:07] about the second half of last

[00:29:08] year. And I think there's a

[00:29:09] correlation.

[00:29:11] I think that shoulder he kind

[00:29:14] of messed up before the All-Star

[00:29:16] break has something to do with it

[00:29:17] because it doesn't make any

[00:29:18] sense as somebody as good as Corbin

[00:29:20] Carroll with such a steady

[00:29:21] profile would be swinging it

[00:29:23] like this.

[00:29:24] Yeah, he's slugging like under

[00:29:26] three 70 since that moment.

[00:29:28] Right. For him that like that

[00:29:29] probably shouldn't be it. We

[00:29:30] know he has really good power.

[00:29:32] It just kind of it's kind of

[00:29:34] unfathomable. People know him

[00:29:35] for a speed but that dude

[00:29:36] mash is the baseball.

[00:29:38] So for his sake, Coby turns

[00:29:39] it around after this weekend.

[00:29:42] Correct. Yeah. That's that's

[00:29:43] a good way to put it.

[00:29:44] Yeah. He can he can go one

[00:29:46] for 12 or whatever this

[00:29:47] weekend and then once they

[00:29:48] get back to playing National

[00:29:50] League teams or when they play

[00:29:52] American League teams and

[00:29:53] interleague play for the

[00:29:53] Mariners take two. Yeah, just

[00:29:54] go back to going off Corbin.

[00:29:56] This is an important stretch.

[00:29:57] I mean the like so the

[00:29:58] Mariners again have not their

[00:30:00] first win of this first

[00:30:02] series win against the top 12

[00:30:04] offense thanks to their

[00:30:05] pitching staff. Can they keep

[00:30:07] it up? Time will tell

[00:30:08] because the early parts of the

[00:30:10] season has showed when they

[00:30:11] faced the better offenses

[00:30:13] they've come up on the

[00:30:14] short end of the stick.

[00:30:15] Right. And it'll be a test.

[00:30:18] Now one break the Mariners

[00:30:19] catch this weekend against

[00:30:20] the Diamondbacks is they're

[00:30:22] not going to face Merrill Kelly

[00:30:23] because unfortunately for him

[00:30:24] he just hit the injured list.

[00:30:26] He was scheduled if the

[00:30:27] rotation had stayed the same

[00:30:28] in Arizona to pitch against

[00:30:30] the Mariners this weekend.

[00:30:31] So the Mariners would have

[00:30:32] gotten Zach Gallin and Merrill

[00:30:33] Kelly now they're just going

[00:30:34] to get Gallin on Friday

[00:30:36] and then they have a

[00:30:37] chance Saturday and Sunday

[00:30:38] to really take that series.

[00:30:40] Friday's matchup certainly

[00:30:41] does not favor them.

[00:30:42] The next two should with

[00:30:43] Kirby going and then it

[00:30:46] would be Logan Gilbert

[00:30:47] going. So so you would.

[00:30:49] Yeah. The offense is going to

[00:30:50] have to hit but that Saturday

[00:30:52] Sunday is the Mariners real

[00:30:53] target window for for taking

[00:30:56] that series.

[00:30:58] What a next six days at T

[00:30:59] Mobile Park quite a lot of

[00:31:00] returns coming in the next

[00:31:03] six days.

[00:31:04] I think we're going to have

[00:31:04] some to talk about on Wednesday

[00:31:06] show. I think there's one

[00:31:07] in particular we're really

[00:31:10] going to have to talk about

[00:31:11] on Wednesday show. No I'm

[00:31:12] not talking about Gino.

[00:31:13] No I'm not talking about if

[00:31:15] Paul Seawald ends up making

[00:31:16] the trip this weekend.

[00:31:17] I don't it doesn't sound like

[00:31:18] he will because he's still

[00:31:20] he's doing some rehab outings

[00:31:21] right now but we'll see if he

[00:31:22] does that be great because he

[00:31:23] deserves an ovation.

[00:31:24] No I'm talking about one

[00:31:26] certain guy during the week

[00:31:28] day series.

[00:31:28] Hmm hmm.

[00:31:30] He's got good initials.

[00:31:32] He does have good initials.

[00:31:34] He doesn't very good initials.

[00:31:35] It rhymes with it.

[00:31:37] It simulates with just

[00:31:38] kidding.

[00:31:39] It is just to go along with

[00:31:42] the latest trend.

[00:31:43] It's between H and L.

[00:31:45] Yes it is.

[00:31:46] Yeah.

[00:31:47] All right we can we can spend

[00:31:48] like 90 seconds on this and

[00:31:50] then I'm sure we'll talk about

[00:31:51] it more Sunday on the live

[00:31:52] stream which by the way if you

[00:31:53] guys don't know we do live

[00:31:54] streams every Sunday now and

[00:31:55] on YouTube and Instagram so

[00:31:57] make sure to come hang out

[00:31:58] with us then and I'm sure

[00:32:00] we'll dive into it much more

[00:32:01] Wednesday show but not like

[00:32:02] 90 seconds here because

[00:32:04] we're not going to record an

[00:32:05] actual podcast until close

[00:32:08] to the end of that brave

[00:32:09] series.

[00:32:10] Jared Kelman getting booed.

[00:32:12] I think so.

[00:32:14] That's gonna break.

[00:32:15] I mean it's gonna break my

[00:32:16] heart because everybody who

[00:32:17] listens to this podcast knows

[00:32:18] I will always be a Jared

[00:32:19] Kelman fan but unfortunately

[00:32:21] I know it's not reasonable

[00:32:24] but unfortunately with fan

[00:32:25] brain I think because how

[00:32:28] he left the org like you

[00:32:30] know the social posts didn't

[00:32:31] think they thanked everybody

[00:32:33] except the organization and

[00:32:34] then he had some stuff to

[00:32:35] say on foul territory and he

[00:32:36] had some stuff to say at

[00:32:37] fan fest about Truist

[00:32:39] Park.

[00:32:39] Oh it's better than Seattle.

[00:32:41] People have seen that stuff

[00:32:42] make its rounds so how he

[00:32:44] will be received I think it

[00:32:46] has something to do with how

[00:32:48] many people are in the ball

[00:32:49] park that night.

[00:32:50] Will the Braves draw a big

[00:32:51] crowd?

[00:32:52] It's possible it's an

[00:32:53] attractive team to come see.

[00:32:55] If there's a real crowd in the

[00:32:55] ballpark that night it's

[00:32:57] possible but if it's like 12

[00:32:59] you know if it's 15 to 20

[00:33:00] thousand people might not be

[00:33:02] that noticeable we'll see.

[00:33:03] And you have the prospect

[00:33:04] flame out factor and the

[00:33:06] fact and when he broke his

[00:33:07] foot right in the middle of

[00:33:08] the summer and there are a

[00:33:10] lot of people out there

[00:33:11] which if you feel this way

[00:33:13] then you're more than

[00:33:13] entitled to your opinion that

[00:33:15] feel like the reason the

[00:33:16] Mariners turned it around

[00:33:17] around in August last year is

[00:33:19] because Jared Kilnick was not

[00:33:20] playing.

[00:33:22] Period.

[00:33:22] And when if you if that's

[00:33:24] what you truly believe then

[00:33:26] you are more than happy to see

[00:33:27] Jared gone in the offseason

[00:33:29] because you'd hope the

[00:33:30] correlation would continue.

[00:33:31] Yeah I don't think I believe

[00:33:33] that but there are people out

[00:33:34] there that believe that.

[00:33:35] Right so it stinks I hope

[00:33:38] he doesn't get booed I

[00:33:39] don't think he deserves to

[00:33:40] get booed but he probably

[00:33:42] will.

[00:33:42] There will be I think there

[00:33:43] will be at least what 30%

[00:33:45] if not more that that will do

[00:33:48] it.

[00:33:48] Yeah by the time we record our

[00:33:49] next true podcast it'll come

[00:33:51] out on the morning before the

[00:33:52] finale of the series likely

[00:33:54] he will have played before

[00:33:55] then because the Mariners

[00:33:56] rotation is all right handed

[00:33:57] pitchers so we'll probably

[00:33:59] have an answer on on how

[00:34:01] it goes.

[00:34:02] Yeah so we'll be interested

[00:34:03] if he comes back and hits

[00:34:04] like four homers yeah you

[00:34:06] know we're leaving off

[00:34:07] Wednesday show with.

[00:34:10] Oh yeah.

[00:34:10] Oh before we get to go down on

[00:34:14] the farm and pick out our

[00:34:15] standout Mariners minor

[00:34:16] league let's hear a word from

[00:34:17] game time.

[00:34:18] The best memories for Lyle and

[00:34:20] I happen a lot at the ball

[00:34:22] park and there's no better

[00:34:24] time to get to the ballpark

[00:34:26] then during these amazing

[00:34:27] upcoming summer months I

[00:34:28] can't wait for summer I know

[00:34:29] you can't wait for summer

[00:34:30] there's so many new memories

[00:34:32] to be made when you're

[00:34:33] thinking about how you're

[00:35:37] the farm who is your stand

[00:35:43] out Mariners minor league or

[00:35:44] this week somebody off the

[00:35:46] list of a list we like to

[00:35:48] categorize as our guys Logan

[00:35:51] Evans he has made four

[00:35:53] starts in double A after

[00:35:54] barely appearing in affiliated

[00:35:57] ball last year he gets the

[00:35:59] call up to double A because

[00:36:00] they love we did in the

[00:36:01] off season they love we

[00:36:02] didn't spring training an

[00:36:03] aggressive push up and call

[00:36:05] up but he's been tested

[00:36:07] and he is the right so far

[00:36:09] through four starts Logan

[00:36:11] Evans has a one eight six

[00:36:14] earned run average he has been

[00:36:15] dominant the walks can come

[00:36:17] down a little bit but guess

[00:36:19] what in his last start which

[00:36:20] was a career outing forum

[00:36:21] they did five shutout one

[00:36:24] walk eight strikeouts it's

[00:36:26] four starts and we'll see how

[00:36:28] he keeps progressing as the

[00:36:29] year rolls on man he looks

[00:36:31] flat out dominant so far double

[00:36:34] A this is just unbelievable

[00:36:36] like it truly is unbelievable

[00:36:38] how he can continue to set the

[00:36:40] bar higher and higher higher

[00:36:42] and higher again with just no

[00:36:44] no experience like the guys who

[00:36:45] come into the minor leagues

[00:36:46] and dominate right away

[00:36:47] usually are picked in the

[00:36:48] first round.

[00:36:49] Mm hmm.

[00:36:50] Logan Evans was drafted in

[00:36:51] the 12th round but he's

[00:36:53] come into the minors so far

[00:36:55] and he's dominated overpowering

[00:36:57] stuff complete repertoire and

[00:37:00] once he dials in the command

[00:37:01] and control mean who is

[00:37:04] saying he's not ready for the

[00:37:05] big leagues it might be

[00:37:06] August or September but if

[00:37:08] like they truly need him and

[00:37:09] he's rolling out a two to era

[00:37:11] and his walk rate is down and a

[00:37:13] strikeout rate is among the

[00:37:15] best among starters in double A

[00:37:17] who's to say like there'd be

[00:37:19] no there'd be no other reason

[00:37:21] to not give him a shot.

[00:37:24] The best orgs in baseball find

[00:37:26] value picks and drafts the Tony

[00:37:28] Gonsolin was a ninth rounder

[00:37:30] out of St. Mary's now he's

[00:37:32] had some injuries the last

[00:37:33] year or two but when he's

[00:37:34] at his best that guy's been

[00:37:35] at the top of the rotation for

[00:37:36] the Dodgers he's had some

[00:37:37] awesome years in LA guys like

[00:37:40] that right.

[00:37:41] Logan Evans may be their Tony

[00:37:43] Gonsolin he may be the guy

[00:37:45] they got late they saw the

[00:37:46] value in them they identified

[00:37:47] him similar to what the

[00:37:48] Mariners did with Bryce

[00:37:49] Miller and Brian Woo those

[00:37:50] guys were not high draft

[00:37:51] picks either and they've

[00:37:53] turned out to be really damn

[00:37:55] good it's not the case right

[00:37:57] now but like you just said

[00:37:59] as the year rolls on I think

[00:38:01] Logan Evans may jump up that

[00:38:03] list in terms of priority guys

[00:38:05] that would be making a start

[00:38:07] for the Seattle Mariners if

[00:38:08] they are called upon.

[00:38:09] Emerson Hancock will be the

[00:38:10] sixth guy Levi Stout still

[00:38:12] there there's some veterans

[00:38:13] still in Tacoma but I think

[00:38:14] as the year rolls on you're

[00:38:15] going to see Logan Evans

[00:38:16] roll up that list and honestly

[00:38:18] you may you may see Reed

[00:38:19] Bam scooter run up that list

[00:38:20] too because he's had a good

[00:38:21] start.

[00:38:22] It's gonna be really hard to

[00:38:24] tell either those guys know

[00:38:25] if they keep performing in

[00:38:26] double eye both those.

[00:38:27] Yeah what a what a top two

[00:38:29] down there in Arkansas so

[00:38:31] and and and both our guys so

[00:38:33] we love our guys right.

[00:38:34] Oh yeah it helps I mean we'll

[00:38:36] take a we'll take half credit

[00:38:38] we'll take half credit they're

[00:38:39] the ones out there throwing

[00:38:40] the pitches so yeah a couple

[00:38:42] of couple of our guys down

[00:38:43] there in Arkansas.

[00:38:45] The guy I had this week the

[00:38:47] Everett Aquasocs roster really

[00:38:49] hasn't gotten a whole lot of

[00:38:50] love when the rosters came

[00:38:51] out people were like yeah

[00:38:53] for the most part all the top

[00:38:54] prospects are in Modesto

[00:38:56] in Arkansas but shout out to

[00:38:57] Ben Williamson Mariners second

[00:38:59] round pick of last year

[00:39:00] he's come out of the gates

[00:39:01] for 17 games a slash line of

[00:39:03] 347 392 542 he's got one

[00:39:06] long ball walked five times

[00:39:08] struck out 11.

[00:39:10] He's like a hit over power guy

[00:39:11] that's what he was categorized

[00:39:12] as you as as he was as he was

[00:39:14] drafted with a good glove and

[00:39:16] he's come into Arkansas this

[00:39:18] coming to come into Everett

[00:39:19] this year and he's really hit

[00:39:21] he played at a small school

[00:39:22] William and Mary but he's come

[00:39:24] to Pro Ball and he's gotten

[00:39:25] off to a really hot start

[00:39:27] this year and just just to

[00:39:28] remember him as an infielder

[00:39:30] he's ahead all of the guys

[00:39:31] down there in Modesto.

[00:39:33] He's got a leg up on him

[00:39:34] because he's older is a college

[00:39:35] guy and behind Cole Young

[00:39:40] in terms of high draft picks

[00:39:42] in the higher minors

[00:39:44] it's Cole and then him

[00:39:49] and he may move faster than

[00:39:50] some of the younger guys in

[00:39:51] Modesto because he's a college

[00:39:53] guy Ben Williamson keeps hitting

[00:39:55] like this for half the year

[00:39:56] in Everett you may see him

[00:39:57] up in Arkansas during the

[00:39:58] summer and if he gets up to

[00:40:00] Arkansas during the summer

[00:40:01] we'll see what he does there

[00:40:01] so you're right.

[00:40:03] Obviously those guys in Modesto

[00:40:05] Cole Young Johnny Parmello

[00:40:07] Typeete Lazz Michael Arroyo

[00:40:09] all those guys like like we

[00:40:10] know what their ceiling is

[00:40:12] but because they're so young

[00:40:13] they may move a little bit

[00:40:15] slower with the exception of

[00:40:16] a healthy Colt Emerson.

[00:40:18] So yeah Ben Williamson may

[00:40:19] make his way through the

[00:40:20] system if he keeps hitting.

[00:40:22] So yeah I mean it's good

[00:40:23] to see I don't know how much

[00:40:25] power he'll truly keep up

[00:40:27] he the way he's profiled

[00:40:29] sounds like he'd be like a

[00:40:30] sub 500 slugging guy but to see

[00:40:32] what he's done so far this

[00:40:33] season it's been really great

[00:40:34] to see.

[00:40:36] Yeah we love to see it.

[00:40:38] There's a segment I know

[00:40:38] we're itching to get to so

[00:40:39] let's get to it.

[00:40:41] Our Russell Wilson Empire

[00:40:42] of the week.

[00:40:43] My goodness do we have

[00:40:45] a banger this week for

[00:40:46] this week's winner.

[00:40:48] Is this an old timer.

[00:40:49] This has to be maybe the

[00:40:50] best one we've ever done.

[00:40:53] In case you're living under

[00:40:54] a rock this week Hunter

[00:40:56] Wendelstadt made quite a

[00:40:57] name for himself in a Yankee

[00:40:58] Zays game this week.

[00:41:00] He there is an umpire now in

[00:41:02] Major League Baseball who has

[00:41:03] ejected a manager for

[00:41:04] something a fan set so let's

[00:41:06] replay the scenario it is the

[00:41:08] first inning of this

[00:41:10] baseball game Yankee Zays.

[00:41:13] I forget who's at the plate

[00:41:14] I think it's Estrella Ruiz

[00:41:16] Czech swings they miss

[00:41:18] I think they missed a

[00:41:18] Czech swing down the first

[00:41:19] ball hits him in the foot

[00:41:21] a slider from Carlos

[00:41:22] Ardon hits Ruiz in the

[00:41:23] foot he he went around

[00:41:26] halfway on a swing the

[00:41:27] first base umpire ruled that

[00:41:29] he did not swing and Aaron

[00:41:31] Boone was kind of pissed

[00:41:33] because he's like well that

[00:41:33] should be a strike not hit by

[00:41:34] pitch Ruiz takes first base

[00:41:37] Aaron Boone has a couple of

[00:41:39] things to say to Hunter

[00:41:39] Wendelstadt who's behind the

[00:41:41] plate Wendelstadt then says

[00:41:44] one more word and you're

[00:41:45] out of here I'm done hearing

[00:41:46] it from you already first

[00:41:47] inning and jokingly Ryan

[00:41:50] Ruko on the S broadcast was

[00:41:52] like oh we don't need a

[00:41:53] John Boy breakdown of that

[00:41:54] one because we could hear

[00:41:55] exactly what Hunter Wendel

[00:41:56] stat said so then Boone

[00:42:00] returns to the dugout and he's

[00:42:01] sitting there on the step and

[00:42:02] the guy literally right above

[00:42:03] the dugout above Aaron Boone

[00:42:05] shout something at Wendelstadt

[00:42:07] and Wendelstadt tosses Boone

[00:42:09] from the game who throws his

[00:42:11] hands up is like I didn't say

[00:42:13] anything I didn't say anything

[00:42:15] what this is bullshit

[00:42:17] so this is bullshit so he

[00:42:20] essentially goes out there

[00:42:21] and has given him a piece of

[00:42:22] his mind and yet he had the

[00:42:25] John Boy breakdown on this is

[00:42:26] fantastic goes into great

[00:42:29] detail what do you get to say

[00:42:30] let me take a quick pause

[00:42:31] before you go on here TJ says

[00:42:33] the guy above the dugout so what

[00:42:34] he's referring to a fan

[00:42:36] yelled something it was a fan

[00:42:38] not somebody in the dugout

[00:42:40] not somebody involved with

[00:42:41] the organization after Aaron

[00:42:43] Boone was told another word

[00:42:44] and you're out of here

[00:42:45] Aaron Boone goes back to the

[00:42:46] dugout he's saying absolutely

[00:42:47] nothing like just standing

[00:42:49] there blank face watching the

[00:42:51] game a fan yells something

[00:42:54] that the umpire didn't like

[00:42:55] and ejects Aaron Boone for the

[00:42:58] fan yelling something here's

[00:43:00] my favorite exchange of the

[00:43:01] whole thing so Wendelstadt

[00:43:04] so Aaron was out there saying

[00:43:05] I didn't say anything I didn't

[00:43:06] say anything Wendelstadt then

[00:43:08] eventually says Aaron you're

[00:43:09] probably right and then

[00:43:12] Aaron responds no I'm not

[00:43:14] probably right I am fucking

[00:43:16] right and obviously they didn't

[00:43:18] overturn the ejection and

[00:43:21] then after the game Wendelstadt

[00:43:23] instead of admitting he made a

[00:43:24] mistake because they are more

[00:43:27] than welcome to admit they've

[00:43:28] messed up and they will do

[00:43:29] better next time but Wendelstadt

[00:43:31] instead made the claim that

[00:43:32] quote I've never ejected a

[00:43:34] manager for something a fan has

[00:43:36] said uh and said that it

[00:43:39] came from the area of the

[00:43:40] dugout therefore Aaron had to

[00:43:42] go

[00:43:45] It's funny you say that hunter

[00:43:47] and there's a breakdown on

[00:43:48] Twitter showing that you're

[00:43:50] wrong there is proof of

[00:43:53] evidence that you're lying

[00:43:56] unreal like this is this is

[00:43:59] literally abusive power at its

[00:44:00] finest just because I can do it

[00:44:03] I will doesn't mean I need a

[00:44:05] reason to do it at all like

[00:44:08] Max shares are made a rehab

[00:44:10] start down in round rock triple

[00:44:12] A for the Rangers just the

[00:44:14] other day and he was asked

[00:44:15] about the umpiring system and

[00:44:17] the automated strike zone

[00:44:18] because he was pitching or

[00:44:21] I forget how it works on rehab

[00:44:22] starts I think on rehab starts

[00:44:23] guys pitch with actual umpires

[00:44:25] calling balls and strikes if

[00:44:26] you're a major leaguer and then

[00:44:27] once the minor leaguers go back

[00:44:28] to pitching it goes back to the

[00:44:30] automated strike zone I believe

[00:44:31] but he was still asked about

[00:44:32] the automated strike zone because

[00:44:33] he was there in person to

[00:44:34] witness it and he starts

[00:44:36] talking about look most umpires

[00:44:38] are really good at their jobs

[00:44:39] The problem is the bottom 10

[00:44:41] percent that have become

[00:44:42] infamous in the baseball world

[00:44:44] for being awful at their jobs

[00:44:45] and Scherzer says why is

[00:44:47] there not a relegation system

[00:44:49] because umpires need to be

[00:44:50] held accountable when players

[00:44:52] don't play well they get

[00:44:53] demoted for not doing their jobs

[00:44:55] umpires need to be held to the

[00:44:56] same standard you know what

[00:44:57] Max Scherzer you are 150

[00:45:01] percent correct why is there

[00:45:03] no relegation system yes the

[00:45:06] stupid umpires union I'm

[00:45:07] pretty sure bans it why is

[00:45:09] there an umpires union that was

[00:45:10] agreed upon to begin with I

[00:45:12] don't know but instead we

[00:45:14] have people like Wendell

[00:45:14] Statt abusing their power and

[00:45:16] doing ridiculous things like

[00:45:17] this. Well the union could

[00:45:18] hold their umpires accountable

[00:45:20] to I could to give them a

[00:45:22] better name but obviously that

[00:45:24] they don't care about that.

[00:45:26] They don't care about making a

[00:45:26] good name for themselves.

[00:45:29] It's unreal once there is

[00:45:32] once you once the incentive

[00:45:34] to actually perform well is gone

[00:45:36] then stuff like this happens.

[00:45:38] You know the incentive for

[00:45:39] players to play well they get

[00:45:41] paid a lot of money and they

[00:45:42] stay in the big leagues if

[00:45:43] they don't play well they're

[00:45:44] gone which is why you see

[00:45:47] Anthony Rendon situations his

[00:45:48] incentive to play well is gone

[00:45:50] so he just doesn't care anymore.

[00:45:52] We can tell these umpires would

[00:45:54] be lying to me if they told me

[00:45:56] how much they cared about this

[00:45:58] I'm dead serious I'm like sure

[00:45:59] I'm making an accusation but

[00:46:01] like the results speak for

[00:46:02] themselves.

[00:46:04] Yeah if you cared it would be

[00:46:05] better.

[00:46:06] Correct there are people doing

[00:46:08] their job well and you are

[00:46:10] not.

[00:46:11] The look it's funny first

[00:46:13] much as we trash on umpires

[00:46:14] on this segment and on this

[00:46:15] podcast there are very good

[00:46:17] umpires out there the one

[00:46:18] I always come back to just

[00:46:20] because I know who he is and

[00:46:22] and I guess I've seen him on

[00:46:23] Samariner's games where he's

[00:46:24] really good is Pat Hoburg who

[00:46:26] might be the best one in

[00:46:27] baseball and he very rarely

[00:46:29] miss the ball and strike call

[00:46:31] like his strike zone is almost

[00:46:32] spot on there are good ones

[00:46:34] out there like that but

[00:46:36] it's kind of like being an

[00:46:37] offensive lineman in baseball

[00:46:39] or baseball an offensive

[00:46:40] lineman in football when you

[00:46:42] have a good game as an

[00:46:43] offensive lineman it means

[00:46:45] your name was not mentioned at

[00:46:47] all on the broadcast your name

[00:46:49] isn't getting brought up means

[00:46:50] you're not getting beat for

[00:46:51] sacks you're not getting

[00:46:52] flagged for penalties you're

[00:46:53] doing your job and you're

[00:46:54] probably doing it well that's

[00:46:56] like umpires too when you're

[00:46:57] like that it's pretty much a

[00:46:59] thankless position you're

[00:47:00] not going to get a bunch of

[00:47:02] love and showered with

[00:47:03] flowers and all that stuff

[00:47:04] know it's the guys like

[00:47:06] Angel Hernandez and CB Buckner

[00:47:07] and now Hunter Wendell stat

[00:47:09] who are in the limelight

[00:47:10] for all the wrong reasons

[00:47:13] shouldn't be this way does

[00:47:14] not have to be this way

[00:47:15] nothing ever has to be the

[00:47:16] way it is there are always

[00:47:18] ways to change it but there

[00:47:20] are people who have decided

[00:47:22] this is OK and therefore

[00:47:25] we keep having this segment

[00:47:28] because if they were actually

[00:47:30] held accountable we wouldn't

[00:47:31] need to have the segment now

[00:47:33] there would be an account

[00:47:34] there would be accountability

[00:47:35] so we don't have to hold them

[00:47:36] accountable correct unfortunately

[00:47:38] since there's none from the

[00:47:39] umpires union and players

[00:47:41] get in trouble if they talk

[00:47:43] about it we can say

[00:47:45] whatever we want and we will

[00:47:46] continue to do so

[00:47:48] yes yes we will

[00:47:50] let's get to speak your mind

[00:47:52] speak your mind spoke

[00:47:57] that would be unwise

[00:47:59] what is necessary

[00:48:01] is never unwise

[00:48:03] OK Lyle what is on your mind

[00:48:06] here on this lovely Thursday

[00:48:08] so I realized I never

[00:48:10] brought this up I was probably

[00:48:12] way overdue to bring it up

[00:48:13] I guess I realized I never did

[00:48:15] a segment of speak your mind

[00:48:16] that I brought up coming back

[00:48:18] from New York and actually

[00:48:19] being back in Seattle which

[00:48:20] people probably caught on to by

[00:48:21] now because I've been back out

[00:48:22] at the ballpark a lot and we've

[00:48:23] been doing a bunch of stuff out

[00:48:25] at T-Mobile but

[00:48:28] just to I guess generalize it

[00:48:30] figured if in case anybody's

[00:48:31] interested in the update that

[00:48:32] yeah it was fun that like the

[00:48:33] two months or the two and a

[00:48:34] half months I spent out there

[00:48:35] whatever it was was was really

[00:48:37] good I got everything I wanted

[00:48:38] to get out of it connected

[00:48:39] with everybody I wanted to

[00:48:40] connect with is something come

[00:48:42] of it in the in the long run

[00:48:44] hopefully or hopefully

[00:48:45] you know whether it involves

[00:48:47] being back in New York or just

[00:48:49] staying here in Seattle and

[00:48:50] hopefully with a lot of things

[00:48:52] to do with this podcast and

[00:48:54] keeping going and all that like

[00:48:55] I don't exactly know what

[00:48:57] definitively like the next

[00:48:59] thing is but I got everything

[00:49:00] I wanted to get out of it so

[00:49:02] I just figured like been a

[00:49:03] while since I brought it up

[00:49:04] don't think I ever like close

[00:49:05] that chapter once I actually

[00:49:07] came back because I think we

[00:49:08] got busy with going to spring

[00:49:09] training and I think there was

[00:49:10] a couple other speak your

[00:49:11] mind segments that we were

[00:49:12] very like definitive about

[00:49:13] bringing up between then so

[00:49:15] yeah I just figured I kind of

[00:49:17] kind of close that circle and

[00:49:19] say yeah it was fun for people

[00:49:20] that were interested in it

[00:49:21] because we did have some people

[00:49:22] with podcasts like the Emmy

[00:49:24] or ask me like how are you

[00:49:24] liking it like have you

[00:49:25] enjoyed it like like

[00:49:26] obviously appreciate it and

[00:49:29] yeah overall it's really fun

[00:49:30] now I'm sure the job stuff

[00:49:32] was great and really important

[00:49:33] at all but what was the best

[00:49:34] thing you eat

[00:49:36] yeah so you you held me

[00:49:37] accountable to this which I

[00:49:38] appreciate because teachers of

[00:49:40] foodie if if he didn't

[00:49:42] kind of push me about it a

[00:49:43] little bit I probably wouldn't

[00:49:44] have tried as much food as I

[00:49:45] tried in in New York City

[00:49:48] best thing so I wrote down

[00:49:50] a top five and I'll throw pizza

[00:49:52] out of it because as we talked

[00:49:53] about on this podcast like Joe's

[00:49:56] Pizza is our spot like when the

[00:49:57] two of us are in New York

[00:49:58] because it's such good pizza

[00:50:00] but there was a couple other

[00:50:03] pizza spots like Prince Street

[00:50:04] Pizza is a popular place I

[00:50:05] tried that I would say the

[00:50:06] best thing I had was either

[00:50:09] Seven Street burger which is

[00:50:11] very popular or this restaurant

[00:50:14] called Tanner Smith's I think

[00:50:16] it's in midtown and basic so

[00:50:18] it's on this account of our

[00:50:19] power that TJ's fallen for a

[00:50:21] long time got me to start

[00:50:22] following it it's basically

[00:50:23] this account that follows all

[00:50:24] these or goes and tries all

[00:50:25] this different New York City

[00:50:26] food and this place had these

[00:50:29] crazy Smash burgers and then

[00:50:33] I think what sold me on going

[00:50:35] was there was this crazy

[00:50:37] s'mores dessert where it's

[00:50:38] basically you get graham

[00:50:39] crackers and it's like toasted

[00:50:42] chocolate chips and marshmallows

[00:50:44] that are put in a skillet and put

[00:50:45] in the grill and it comes out

[00:50:47] and you dip graham crackers in

[00:50:48] it because then it's all like

[00:50:49] you know melted chocolate

[00:50:51] and marshmallows it was so

[00:50:53] good I would say yet Tanner

[00:50:55] Smith's restaurant between like

[00:50:56] the Smash burger I tried there

[00:50:58] it was really big and then this

[00:50:59] dessert was was my favorite thing

[00:51:02] and to think of all the places

[00:51:03] you tried and you like maybe

[00:51:04] got through one not even 1%

[00:51:06] so yeah a lot more a lot more

[00:51:08] a lot more left to go so that's

[00:51:10] why you got to keep

[00:51:12] keep growing the less I'm glad

[00:51:13] you tried all those places I

[00:51:15] know we have a lot more places

[00:51:16] to go try whenever we get back

[00:51:17] there but yeah I mean I'm glad

[00:51:19] all the job stuff it's certainly

[00:51:20] not easy to go

[00:51:23] to spend a significant chunk

[00:51:25] of time somewhere that you

[00:51:26] haven't lived before just for

[00:51:27] the sake of networking to see

[00:51:29] what you what you can

[00:51:30] accomplish it's not something

[00:51:31] everyone can do but sometimes

[00:51:33] you got to do what you got

[00:51:34] to do and you know

[00:51:37] from everything I've heard from

[00:51:38] you both which from what you

[00:51:40] just said and what we've talked

[00:51:41] about it was worth it so

[00:51:43] that I mean that's really all

[00:51:44] that matters even if the end

[00:51:45] result is not what you want

[00:51:48] like the process was good

[00:51:51] so if the process is good then

[00:51:53] that's all that that's all that

[00:51:54] you can control and there's

[00:51:55] more people we know now from

[00:51:57] it like like there's there's

[00:51:58] people I wanted to connect

[00:52:00] with in New York did kept

[00:52:01] the relationships and now like

[00:52:03] people that are in sports media

[00:52:05] and have some very very good

[00:52:07] insight knowledge on like the

[00:52:08] sports media podcast social

[00:52:10] content landscape and you and I

[00:52:12] both have talked to them now

[00:52:14] and they've given a given us

[00:52:15] some good advice about like

[00:52:16] things to keep doing with this

[00:52:17] podcast with the very least

[00:52:19] it's it's helpful things like

[00:52:20] that so yeah 100%

[00:52:22] Yeah certainly and you know

[00:52:24] very fun place to spend

[00:52:25] some time certainly that's

[00:52:26] so and I miss the food

[00:52:28] and I miss the food

[00:52:29] I know I know where would

[00:52:31] I go first first of all

[00:52:32] you mentioned devour power

[00:52:33] shout out Greg and Rebecca

[00:52:34] they do an amazing job all the

[00:52:36] time always positive

[00:52:38] and I don't even know where

[00:52:39] I'd go first I'd probably just

[00:52:40] I'll have to circle back and

[00:52:42] I'll give you a place I

[00:52:44] would give them credit for that

[00:52:45] you know there's obviously

[00:52:47] there's there's accounts out

[00:52:48] there that rate food and it's

[00:52:49] out of 10 and you know it

[00:52:51] can be people with big

[00:52:52] followings a lot of the time

[00:52:53] and if some restaurant gets a

[00:52:54] bad score just because

[00:52:56] this that specific person

[00:52:57] doesn't like it it could

[00:52:59] still turn away a lot of

[00:52:59] people because they have a

[00:53:00] following but what they do

[00:53:01] with devour power they

[00:53:02] don't give it rankings they

[00:53:03] show look at how good all this

[00:53:05] food is all positive so that

[00:53:07] part's cool I've heard them

[00:53:08] talk about it like it is

[00:53:09] purposely their philosophy

[00:53:11] they're not there to judge

[00:53:12] anybody they're just there to

[00:53:13] eat just there as they say to

[00:53:15] devour so it's good and

[00:53:16] it you know they do a good

[00:53:18] job of showcasing all these

[00:53:19] places and you know I

[00:53:20] probably wouldn't have found

[00:53:21] half these places without

[00:53:22] seeing that I do the one

[00:53:23] place that is definitely on my

[00:53:24] itinerary where my brother

[00:53:26] who lives in Manhattan says

[00:53:27] I'm going as soon as I get

[00:53:29] there is carbon so I

[00:53:30] got to start saving for that

[00:53:31] you know a carbon is I

[00:53:32] assume yeah it's very

[00:53:34] expensive but they're supposed

[00:53:36] to have pretty unbelievable

[00:53:38] food so that I'd love to eat

[00:53:41] there one day it's just again

[00:53:43] choosing to shell out the money

[00:53:44] for it or not and getting a

[00:53:46] reservation is hard to and you

[00:53:47] know it's celebrities eat

[00:53:48] there so we'll see you can go

[00:53:50] to the one in Vegas too but

[00:53:51] it's not the same experience

[00:53:52] I'd like to go to the one

[00:53:53] you know where it is but

[00:53:55] more Italian food that would

[00:53:56] be nice not enough great

[00:53:58] Italian food especially here

[00:53:59] in the here in Oregon it's

[00:54:00] lacking unfortunately yeah

[00:54:03] I'm trying to think of what

[00:54:04] else I would probably mostly

[00:54:05] be pizza related but you

[00:54:07] never know I probably literally

[00:54:08] eat anything so

[00:54:11] they don't do they have

[00:54:12] David hot chicken in Seattle

[00:54:13] I don't know if they do it's a

[00:54:14] chain well in Seattle

[00:54:17] there probably is actually

[00:54:18] you know what that's a good

[00:54:19] question I hadn't I hadn't had

[00:54:20] it till I was in New York

[00:54:22] City because I actually I

[00:54:23] think it was your brother

[00:54:23] that recommended it that

[00:54:24] was really because he lives

[00:54:25] on the same block as one

[00:54:26] yeah it was good let's see

[00:54:28] I think there's one in so

[00:54:30] near me there's a bunch in

[00:54:31] Portland there's one in Eugene

[00:54:33] there's one in Salem

[00:54:35] Oh there's one in Everett

[00:54:37] so there is a chain well

[00:54:38] there you go get get to an

[00:54:39] aqua socks game and try Dave's

[00:54:41] hot chicken yeah but that's a

[00:54:42] chain it's like saying go to

[00:54:44] the raising canes like you

[00:54:45] know so I love canes

[00:54:47] well we're here in New York

[00:54:48] do you want to go to the

[00:54:49] Canes and Times Square

[00:54:50] all right there probably path

[00:54:52] again I'd never I'd never

[00:54:53] had it I had it once Dave's

[00:54:55] hot chicken because your

[00:54:56] brother recommended it so

[00:54:57] right it is good

[00:54:59] but it is a chain so you could

[00:55:00] have it pretty much anywhere

[00:55:01] so it's fair it's like someone

[00:55:02] telling me when I get here go to

[00:55:03] Dutch Bros. like yeah I know

[00:55:05] I've been there quite a lot

[00:55:06] all right there's a lot of

[00:55:07] a lot of locations yeah

[00:55:09] but yeah I like the like the

[00:55:10] unique locations those are

[00:55:11] better yeah I got a few

[00:55:13] things on my speaker mind this

[00:55:14] week first of all NFL draft

[00:55:16] is tonight prediction

[00:55:18] with the ox I love to say

[00:55:21] Troy Fountain who they need

[00:55:22] offensive line help

[00:55:24] but I don't know I don't know

[00:55:26] if they even pick at 16 they

[00:55:27] may just trade out of the first

[00:55:28] round yeah they may just trade

[00:55:30] back I will say and you can

[00:55:32] hold this accountable for us if

[00:55:33] they draft Cooper DeGene tonight

[00:55:36] there's going to be a problem

[00:55:38] next speak your mind next week

[00:55:40] we might have some more things

[00:55:41] to say they just don't need

[00:55:43] any more corners they don't

[00:55:44] need more corners like hire

[00:55:46] a coach whose bread and

[00:55:48] butter is line play and they

[00:55:49] go out and they draft a

[00:55:50] corner again

[00:55:53] no thanks yeah agreed

[00:55:56] is what do we think

[00:56:00] oh did you have one more thing

[00:56:01] to add no I'm just obviously

[00:56:03] I'm excited to watch the draft

[00:56:04] that's part of the reason

[00:56:05] we're recording a little bit

[00:56:06] early today that paired with

[00:56:07] the Mariners game being

[00:56:08] early worked out is is T.

[00:56:10] J. and I want to watch the

[00:56:11] draft but by the time you're

[00:56:12] all listening to this you'll

[00:56:13] know who they picked or maybe

[00:56:15] you won't because they all

[00:56:16] trade it out of the first

[00:56:16] round now here's a yes or

[00:56:18] no do they pick a quarterback

[00:56:20] tonight that would mean

[00:56:23] with their one pick

[00:56:25] we could probably trade back

[00:56:26] and get no bonus

[00:56:29] please no I want bonus but they

[00:56:32] could like theoretically if

[00:56:33] they trade it back in the late

[00:56:34] twenties I think he'd be there

[00:56:37] yeah if they were going to

[00:56:39] trade for anybody or trade

[00:56:41] up for anybody like like trade

[00:56:43] back into the first round

[00:56:44] feel like it would be for

[00:56:45] Michael Pennings like Seattle

[00:56:47] guy Ryan Grubbs now the O.C.

[00:56:48] for the Seahawks who was

[00:56:49] obviously you dubs OC with

[00:56:51] Michael Pennings that one

[00:56:52] feels like it would be

[00:56:53] the match made in heaven and

[00:56:55] the most sense in terms of if

[00:56:57] they were going to go get a

[00:56:57] quarterback thing is

[00:57:00] Michael Pennings actually might

[00:57:01] not be there we know there's

[00:57:02] going to be a run on

[00:57:02] quarterbacks early the question

[00:57:04] is where guys like J.J.

[00:57:05] McCarthy Michael Pennings and

[00:57:07] bonus go now McCarthy may go in

[00:57:09] the top five after those first

[00:57:11] three the big three Williams

[00:57:13] Daniels may but

[00:57:15] where Pennings goes is kind of

[00:57:16] a question I've seen the Raiders

[00:57:18] at 13 and a lot of mock drafts

[00:57:19] I've seen them falling a lot

[00:57:20] farther and a lot of mock

[00:57:21] draft so we'll see

[00:57:23] here's one more amazing thing

[00:57:25] that's I guess not as much

[00:57:26] Seahawks related but can you

[00:57:28] it's going to be amazing so

[00:57:30] again by the time you guys

[00:57:31] listen to this you'll know

[00:57:32] where he gets picked but the

[00:57:33] fact like you and I watched

[00:57:34] Jane Daniels as a freshman

[00:57:35] quarterback at ASU he's

[00:57:37] probably going to go second

[00:57:38] overall today just never

[00:57:41] he was a highly touted

[00:57:42] dude I never would have

[00:57:43] thought I never would have

[00:57:45] thought he was skinny he

[00:57:47] was like he did I just

[00:57:49] couldn't like really tell he

[00:57:50] didn't have the step onto

[00:57:51] campus NFL factor when we

[00:57:53] saw him in 2019

[00:57:56] no and pretty incredible

[00:57:58] how far he's come he was a

[00:57:59] pretty big recruit but again

[00:58:01] very very small not

[00:58:04] not height wise but he was

[00:58:05] he was scrawny so it felt

[00:58:07] like one of those guys that

[00:58:09] might have a good college

[00:58:10] career would stick around at

[00:58:11] ASU he didn't but

[00:58:13] for good reason yeah

[00:58:16] but ASU was a dumpster

[00:58:17] fire of an or of a

[00:58:19] university in terms of

[00:58:20] athletic we can get into

[00:58:21] that in another speaker

[00:58:22] mind like they're going to be

[00:58:23] they're going to be terrible

[00:58:24] for like a decade and I'll

[00:58:25] leave it at that we can

[00:58:26] we can leave it yeah we can

[00:58:27] get into that in another

[00:58:28] speaker mind but anyway

[00:58:30] Jane Daniels felt like he

[00:58:31] would have a solid college

[00:58:32] career maybe get drafted

[00:58:33] late latch on for somewhere

[00:58:34] for a short amount of time

[00:58:35] no he's about to be

[00:58:37] somebody's franchise

[00:58:38] quarterback likely the

[00:58:38] commanders it's crazy so

[00:58:40] TJ TJ was broadcasting

[00:58:43] ASU Oregon that football

[00:58:45] game our senior year on

[00:58:47] our student radio station

[00:58:48] he was on the play by play

[00:58:49] for it for this game

[00:58:50] and TJ called

[00:58:51] Jaden Daniels absolute

[00:58:53] moonball dart of a throw

[00:58:55] to Brandon IU for like an

[00:58:56] 80 yard touchdown to seal

[00:58:57] the win get a huge upset

[00:58:59] win in Tempe and Oregon's

[00:59:01] playoff chances and that was

[00:59:02] a sick play at the time

[00:59:03] like like that is the play

[00:59:05] I remember most from our

[00:59:06] time at ASU but it's funny

[00:59:07] seeing that now looking

[00:59:10] back on it because at the

[00:59:11] time it just felt like two

[00:59:12] guys who were pretty good

[00:59:13] for ASU now that's oh

[00:59:16] going to be a top two pick

[00:59:18] that threw the ball and the

[00:59:19] guy that caught the ball was

[00:59:21] a first round wide receiver

[00:59:22] who also is now basically

[00:59:25] become a top 20 receiver

[00:59:27] in the game pretty nuts

[00:59:30] pretty nuts with yeah no

[00:59:32] Rashad White was not on that

[00:59:33] team so could another

[00:59:34] starting running back but

[00:59:35] still like you know Benjamin

[00:59:37] was right and Brad and I

[00:59:38] you the year before had

[00:59:39] turned it from like he was

[00:59:41] kind of like an unheralded

[00:59:42] juco recruit into that

[00:59:45] which was that like pretty

[00:59:47] pretty pretty bonkers to think

[00:59:50] about and that was five years

[00:59:51] ago or four and a half years

[00:59:53] ago yeah that's geez

[00:59:56] man that was a pretty that

[00:59:57] was one of the most I've had

[00:59:59] a lot of fun moments

[01:00:00] covering sports that was

[01:00:01] certainly up there that was

[01:00:04] that was unbelievable on that

[01:00:06] on that on that play

[01:00:07] and it messed it up too I was

[01:00:08] you know what you never want

[01:00:09] to mess up a play that big

[01:00:10] and I thought I did a good

[01:00:11] job on that one so that was

[01:00:13] good it's crazy crazy how

[01:00:15] how time how time flies

[01:00:17] and remember Jane that game

[01:00:18] he was like what twenty eight

[01:00:20] of thirty four for four

[01:00:21] something it was it was an

[01:00:23] unbelievable performance

[01:00:24] against like Tibido is on

[01:00:26] that defense he beat

[01:00:27] I you beat Diomitor Lenore

[01:00:29] on the outside he's in the

[01:00:30] NFL as well who else is in

[01:00:32] the NFL on that defense

[01:00:33] well I mean on the defense

[01:00:35] we can we can pick it apart

[01:00:37] but he had to go up and beat

[01:00:39] Justin Herbert which he did

[01:00:40] well he Justin Herbert was

[01:00:42] pretty bad that game

[01:00:43] yeah he was that was that

[01:00:44] was this Oregon staff that

[01:00:46] did him that essentially

[01:00:47] I don't know how they managed

[01:00:49] to make him look so bad

[01:00:51] given how he's looked in the NFL

[01:00:52] right correct but yeah crazy

[01:00:55] is you said is that was on

[01:00:57] your speaker mind basically

[01:00:58] those couple of things

[01:00:59] pretty much I had one more

[01:01:00] thing not sports related

[01:01:02] I don't know if you had

[01:01:03] anything else on this

[01:01:05] I guess that's about it

[01:01:06] but just yeah it's crazy to

[01:01:07] think that that ASU team

[01:01:09] had so many talented guys

[01:01:10] and shockingly like

[01:01:13] eight and five fell under

[01:01:14] fell under the expectations

[01:01:15] yeah eight and five and then

[01:01:17] a year a let less than

[01:01:19] a year later had gotten popped

[01:01:20] for recruiting violations

[01:01:22] so recruiting violations

[01:01:23] and all the all the stuff

[01:01:24] came out this week

[01:01:25] and shocker after saying

[01:01:28] that Herm Edwards had nothing

[01:01:29] to do with anything he got

[01:01:30] the longest penalty of all

[01:01:31] of them outside of Antonio

[01:01:32] Pierce funny again

[01:01:34] Raiders head coach

[01:01:35] Antonio Pierce by the way

[01:01:37] yeah where Jaden Daniels

[01:01:38] said if he could pick

[01:01:39] that's where he wants to be

[01:01:40] is with Antonio Pierce

[01:01:41] and in Vegas anyway

[01:01:42] we can get it like if

[01:01:44] people are actually interested

[01:01:45] to hear this stuff like we can

[01:01:46] get into ASU stuff

[01:01:46] in another speaker mind

[01:01:47] and just talk about how

[01:01:48] atrocious they're going to be

[01:01:49] for maybe the rest of our

[01:01:50] lifetimes but yeah

[01:01:52] I'll let you move on to your

[01:01:53] last thing last thing

[01:01:54] this will be quick

[01:01:55] did you know you can play

[01:01:56] like Nintendo DS games

[01:01:57] on your phone now

[01:01:58] have you seen that no

[01:02:00] you can I can play

[01:02:01] Pokemon Platinum

[01:02:02] on my iPhone now

[01:02:04] huh they like recently

[01:02:05] as of like the last couple

[01:02:06] of weeks let down the rules

[01:02:08] when it comes to

[01:02:09] emulator games

[01:02:10] so you can now I like

[01:02:12] I have Pokemon Platinum

[01:02:13] on my iPhone

[01:02:14] like I played that

[01:02:15] and as like an elementary

[01:02:16] school kid and I loved it

[01:02:18] I haven't played it since

[01:02:20] because well I don't have a DS

[01:02:22] but I can just have it on my

[01:02:23] phone now and you can play

[01:02:24] like there's hundreds of games

[01:02:25] that are all free

[01:02:26] that you can download

[01:02:27] onto your phone and play

[01:02:28] yeah that's pretty cool

[01:02:30] I I never was

[01:02:32] I think I played more

[01:02:33] Game Boy than DS growing up

[01:02:34] but

[01:02:36] still very cool

[01:02:37] yeah so

[01:02:39] no it was a lot of fun

[01:02:39] springing back some memories

[01:02:40] OK yeah well now

[01:02:42] now people can

[01:02:42] rekindle little memories

[01:02:44] playing games on the iPhone

[01:02:45] like that's that's pretty cool

[01:02:47] I guess the last last thing

[01:02:48] before we totally wrap this show

[01:02:49] up is just to

[01:02:51] summarize and conclude

[01:02:52] with the players coming back

[01:02:53] to Seattle this weekend

[01:02:54] I know we talked about

[01:02:55] Jared but I think it's

[01:02:56] safe to say Gino

[01:02:58] will absolutely get novation

[01:02:59] Seawall if he's there

[01:03:00] will absolutely get novation

[01:03:02] Kelnick may get

[01:03:05] yeah yeah he will

[01:03:07] that's probably that's

[01:03:08] probably fair of the three

[01:03:09] guys returning that's likely

[01:03:10] how it goes we can

[01:03:11] reconvene on Wednesday

[01:03:13] so so yeah

[01:03:14] well we hope everybody enjoys

[01:03:16] the NFL draft we hope

[01:03:17] everybody enjoys the weekend

[01:03:19] of baseball mirrors are playing

[01:03:20] really well so everybody

[01:03:21] has a lot to be excited about

[01:03:23] as are the two of us

[01:03:24] and let's hope they keep it

[01:03:25] rolling because

[01:03:27] they certainly can

[01:03:28] and they really need to without

[01:03:29] JP Crawford

[01:03:30] I think that'll just about wrap

[01:03:31] up this edition of the

[01:03:32] Marine Layer podcast

[01:03:34] you guys know the drill
