Lyle and TJ first react to Bryan Woo's near-perfect game on Wednesday (0:56). They then open up the mailbag and answer listener questions, including a hypothetical full-season Woo scenario, which pitcher would be the most likely traded this offseason, the most likely position group to rebound in 2025, and more (8:36).

[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Welcome to Episode 163 of the Marine Layer Podcast.
[00:00:04] [SPEAKER_02]: It's our mailbag episode.
[00:00:06] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll answer all of your guys' best questions.
[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I think Brian Wu went into the dugout between
[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: and a few months ago.
[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_02]: We'll go to Episode 173 of the Marine Layer Podcast,
[00:00:50] [SPEAKER_02]: part of the just baseball podcast network,
[00:00:52] [SPEAKER_02]: recording on Thursday evening, September 12th.
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_02]: How does it feel knowing you,
[00:00:59] [SPEAKER_02]: jinxed Brian Wu out of a perfect game yesterday?
[00:01:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Would you like to elaborate on that?
[00:01:03] [SPEAKER_00]: How was my fault?
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think I one time said he was throwing a perfecto.
[00:01:06] [SPEAKER_02]: I think Brian Wu went into the dugout between
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_02]: and a thing opened his phone, open Twitter,
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_02]: and saw that.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Why is everyone hype in me up so much?
[00:01:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Do I see perfect game here?
[00:01:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, it must have been the Marine Layer Podcast
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_02]: tweeting that out.
[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Those bucks.
[00:01:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And then he goes out there in the seventh and...
[00:01:29] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I gotta make a perfect picture.
[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I gotta make a perfect picture in the Nando win.
[00:01:35] [SPEAKER_00]: It's all, it's all people online, fault.
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_00]: We jinxed it.
[00:01:39] [SPEAKER_00]: We were the reason Brian Wu gave up the home run
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_00]: of Fernando Todd's.
[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of things are our fault,
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_00]: while even if they actually aren't.
[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll never understand people that actually blame
[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_00]: whether it's the writers or broadcasters or whoever
[00:01:53] [SPEAKER_00]: that mentioned there's a perfect game going on
[00:01:56] [SPEAKER_00]: as the reason it didn't happen.
[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: You really think Ryan Divisher Dave Sims
[00:02:00] [SPEAKER_00]: has anything to do with Brian Wu's perfect game?
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Now, who do you think thinks about a perfect game more?
[00:02:06] [SPEAKER_02]: While it's happening.
[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: The picture or the writer, please.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_02]: You think Brian Wu doesn't know he has a perfect game going?
[00:02:14] [SPEAKER_02]: If you think he doesn't walk out there
[00:02:15] [SPEAKER_02]: between every pitch, me and like,
[00:02:17] [SPEAKER_02]: no one's reached base yet.
[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_02]: I haven't had to go on the stretch yet.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Hmm.
[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wait, no, it's Divisher's fault.
[00:02:22] [SPEAKER_00]: It's Divisher's fault.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no.
[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Come on, people.
[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_02]: What did Ryan respond to that dude yesterday?
[00:02:30] [SPEAKER_02]: It was delete your...
[00:02:32] [SPEAKER_02]: So Ryan Divis pointed out that we was 15 up, 15 down.
[00:02:36] [SPEAKER_02]: Right, yeah, I think it was that one.
[00:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: And then someone responded to him telling
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_02]: him these drinks and Brian Wu
[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_02]: and I thought one of the most perfect lines
[00:02:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I've ever heard coming out of a beat writer's mouth
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_02]: to delete your count and get a life.
[00:02:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I just found it.
[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to make sure we get this right.
[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So Divisher originally tweets,
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_00]: one line tweet he just says 15 up, 15 down for Brian Wu.
[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Somebody replies, shut up and don't tweet about it again.
[00:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: That got four likes and one quote tweet
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and in which Divisher quotes tweets it
[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: and says, unfollow and get a life
[00:03:11] [SPEAKER_00]: which got 645 likes, nine retweets, two quote tweets
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and some comments.
[00:03:18] [SPEAKER_00]: He, there is nobody like him.
[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Unfollow was kind of so I could delete your count
[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I think would have been better.
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Probably.
[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Divisher's gonna good mood yesterday.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But he's never in a good mood.
[00:03:32] [SPEAKER_00]: In a good mood on the Ryan Divisher scale,
[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: where instead of telling somebody that you should block
[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_00]: him or you should delete your count
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_00]: it's just like okay just unfollow me.
[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_02]: But I could imagine he'd be less heavy.
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, he probably had to wear hoodie yesterday
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_02]: maybe some pants.
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_02]: It was chilly at the ballpark.
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, the bundle up a little bit.
[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_02]: There's always those photos of him bundled up
[00:03:53] [SPEAKER_02]: on his computer and the press box like this
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_02]: with the windows open and the wind just blowing straight
[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_02]: into the press box while the murderers have another
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_02]: boring offense of performance and there's very little
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_02]: to write about Nasta answer the same tweets
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_02]: over and over again.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Why Julio and he has a runner in scoring position
[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_02]: grounds into a double play.
[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'd also be in a bad mood, right?
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe.
[00:04:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Although do you think he actually prefers wearing
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_00]: his seven foot or shorts over jeans?
[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_02]: He is from Montana.
[00:04:25] [SPEAKER_02]: But he probably likes to snow then more than just
[00:04:27] [SPEAKER_02]: boring cold.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And he's to be entertaining cold.
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_02]: That's probably true.
[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_02]: There's no entertaining cold in Seattle.
[00:04:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's fair.
[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_02]: It just rains and for the most part,
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_02]: I imagine people leave him alone in Montana.
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't look at Twitter and enjoys his life.
[00:04:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, while he's in Seattle, he's working.
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Also before we get to the mail bag,
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: I just got to say while we're on the topic of Brian Wu
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00]: to everybody that told me my take was stupid a few weeks ago
[00:04:54] [SPEAKER_00]: that Brian Wu should be starting a playoff game.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Where are you at now?
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Where are you at now?
[00:04:59] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't get to jump on the bandwagon anymore.
[00:05:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Trains left the station, left the fucking station.
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna, yeah, clap it up.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Are you gonna watch?
[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Are the Mariners gonna get into the playoffs?
[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Have a run in September, slate their rotation,
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: pitch Brian Wu and then he goes out and throws like six
[00:05:19] [SPEAKER_00]: or seven shutout and a postseason game.
[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll tell you what, everybody that hyped some up,
[00:05:24] [SPEAKER_00]: better hop into my DMs and replies, apologizing.
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_02]: You included.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I know.
[00:05:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not allowed to cheer on Brian Wu in the postseason
[00:05:33] [SPEAKER_02]: unfortunately.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I doubt it.
[00:05:35] [SPEAKER_02]: I was a doubter.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Although, but lessly for me, this team's not making the playoffs.
[00:05:40] [SPEAKER_02]: So I don't have anything to worry about.
[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's true.
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_02]: We did declare the season over.
[00:05:44] [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, it's gonna be kind of tough to come back from.
[00:05:48] [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, is there a chance?
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, is it happening?
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Probably not.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_02]: Correct.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_02]: No.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_02]: If you're looking at us for a overwhelming optimism
[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_02]: to make the playoffs, I'd like to speak for
[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_02]: while and myself, we cannot deliver that.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Which is funny to say because usually we are more
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_00]: of the positive, slated Mariners podcast,
[00:06:09] [SPEAKER_00]: or like positive, slanted Mariners podcast,
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: but man, these last two months have just killed us.
[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_00]: Like, killed our morale.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't, okay, if we're gonna just get in the trust
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_00]: tree here for a second and be transparent,
[00:06:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know the last time my morale's been this low.
[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Watching the team, watching the games, et cetera.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Because there's years where it's frustrating
[00:06:28] [SPEAKER_00]: and then there's years where you have to go through
[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_00]: the ringer, but even last year when they got hot
[00:06:32] [SPEAKER_00]: in August and they were in the race in September,
[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I fired myself up when they had that 10 game slate
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to end the season and everybody was talking
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_00]: about the playoffs start today.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_00]: Remember when they went to Texas and then they had
[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_00]: to play Houston and then they had to play Texas again.
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Everybody last year was like play off start today.
[00:06:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Let's fire it up for that.
[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I know there are three and a half games out right now
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_00]: at time of recording this.
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: The Thursday game hasn't happened yet against the Rangers,
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_00]: but man, my morale is just so low.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: They like they kicked it right out of me this year.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_02]: And like why it's different?
[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: It's probably based on timing.
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_02]: If the season flipped flopped,
[00:07:11] [SPEAKER_02]: if what they did from the middle of April
[00:07:13] [SPEAKER_02]: to the middle of June when they went 10 games up,
[00:07:16] [SPEAKER_02]: happened now in these previous two months were before that.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you'd be a little more excited right now.
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_02]: It'd be like, look at what they've done.
[00:07:23] [SPEAKER_02]: They would have been what?
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: They probably would have been 10 games out, right?
[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_02]: If not more and they would have built it back to a three
[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_02]: or would have moved back to a three and a half game lead
[00:07:34] [SPEAKER_02]: from an unimaginable depth.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_02]: It would be all optimism, all optimism,
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: but instead it's the sequencing hasn't worked out
[00:07:43] [SPEAKER_02]: and we're all bumped.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: The sequencing things at fair point.
[00:07:48] [SPEAKER_00]: That's probably part of it.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It stinks.
[00:07:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's what happened last year before we get to the mailbag
[00:07:53] [SPEAKER_00]: is yeah, they started poorly.
[00:07:56] [SPEAKER_00]: They had a red hot August.
[00:07:58] [SPEAKER_00]: They got everybody's hopes up
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_00]: and then they didn't get into the playoffs.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_02]: If they did this last year,
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it would have been the same firejerry last year.
[00:08:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Instead of the people were like,
[00:08:08] [SPEAKER_02]: all right, we just need to find some way to fix this
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_02]: in the off season and instead now it's a lot of very angry people.
[00:08:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So, but not all of you are terribly wrong
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_02]: because when it's a 200 performs,
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_02]: you do have every single right in the world to be angry.
[00:08:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get to the mailbag.
[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_02]: So when we look for positivity while mailbags are good,
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_02]: shakes up the questions, shakes up some things that,
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_02]: we don't normally talk about on this podcast
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_02]: and we get to talk about.
[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So put a smile on your face
[00:08:34] [SPEAKER_02]: because that's what we're about to do here.
[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_02]: The first one is right up your alley.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_02]: This question comes from Haviar on Instagram
[00:08:42] [SPEAKER_02]: and his question is, if Brian will pitch the entire season
[00:08:47] [SPEAKER_02]: where would he be in Saeyang voting
[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'll add a caveat to this.
[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_02]: By him saying, what if he pitch the entire season?
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's say he has an entire season worth of stats.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Where does he finish this season?
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Honestly, you could throw out a positioning or ranking
[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and I'd say, okay, I believe you.
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Which sounds crazy because that means if somebody said
[00:09:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I think Brian would win the Saeyang this year I'm saying,
[00:09:16] [SPEAKER_00]: okay, I personally would not pick him to win it.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying by the way he's pitched
[00:09:22] [SPEAKER_00]: if somebody said that,
[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I would not respond and tell them
[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_00]: that's the craziest take in the world.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_00]: It might not happen.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he'd really be over tarick scooble,
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_00]: probably not set Lugo either, but man,
[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_00]: it'd be high up there.
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_00]: He'd be in all star, that's for sure.
[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_00]: He would have absolutely been in all star
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: down in Arlington this summer
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_00]: and where he'd finished position-wise,
[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: somewhere in the top.
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Five, I would say.
[00:09:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so here's the top five and war
[00:09:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and I'll ask you to play some among these guys.
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Cause I think this is a good rough estimate
[00:09:55] [SPEAKER_02]: of what the top five in the Saeyang voting's gonna be.
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Terk scooble, Cole Ragan, Seth Lugo, Logan,
[00:10:02] [SPEAKER_02]: and Tenerhawk.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_02]: Where does he finish among those five?
[00:10:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh dude, I put him over, Hout.
[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to think, could he get over
[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: one of those royals guys?
[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: He'd probably write around where Logan is.
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So four, five, maybe he could jump up to three.
[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Again, maybe he could jump somebody like Ragan's?
[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe he could jump.
[00:10:22] [SPEAKER_02]: So here's how I've looked at this.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_02]: The problem with who?
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_02]: So I tried to extrapolating based on what he's done
[00:10:29] [SPEAKER_02]: if you made a full seasons worth of starts.
[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_02]: He would have thrown about 178 innings
[00:10:34] [SPEAKER_02]: which would have unfortunately put him behind
[00:10:36] [SPEAKER_02]: every single one of those guys.
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_02]: So we'd have less innings than everybody.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_02]: He would have the lowest strikeout rate.
[00:10:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I believe of all of them.
[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_02]: So when you look at that, his expected numbers
[00:10:49] [SPEAKER_02]: aren't, they're good, they're very good,
[00:10:51] [SPEAKER_02]: but his raw stats and his,
[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_02]: the right word for not expected stats,
[00:10:58] [SPEAKER_02]: but like actual stats, actual stats
[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_02]: have been a little bit better
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_02]: than his expected stats this year.
[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And I do think the modern day voter
[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_02]: does look at that at least a tiny bit
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_02]: of how flukey season is and how it isn't.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_02]: And he'd be projected for about four wins
[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_02]: above replacement, which would be lower
[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_02]: than the top four.
[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_02]: So here's how I said set this up.
[00:11:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I think he would finish right behind Logan Gilbert
[00:11:25] [SPEAKER_02]: wherever Logan finishes.
[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_02]: Logan's not gonna have a lower ERA
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_02]: than Brian Wood.
[00:11:31] [SPEAKER_02]: Because let's say he pitches those extra 78 innings
[00:11:34] [SPEAKER_02]: or I think it's 72 innings.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_02]: He would, let's say you'd have a three ERA on the dot
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_02]: which would be exceptionally good
[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_02]: if he managed to get that far with that.
[00:11:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Be a little bit better than Logan's
[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_02]: but Logan's got the higher volume of innings
[00:11:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and he strikes out more batters,
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_02]: which voters find more valuable.
[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_02]: What's that?
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Logan leads baseball in Web 2.
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, in Web 2.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_02]: He's got a lot of things, a lot of things working for him.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_02]: So I just think wherever they would slot Logan
[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I would put Brian right after that
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_02]: and as that sits right now,
[00:12:09] [SPEAKER_02]: he would finish probably third or sorry,
[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_02]: fourth or fifth in Siong voting.
[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_02]: If he kept us up for an entire season 32 starts.
[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Yes, we're right around.
[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_00]: We're right about at the same boat with where we position them.
[00:12:25] [SPEAKER_00]: The thing about Wood strikeouts,
[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that's a part of the reason
[00:12:27] [SPEAKER_00]: his expected numbers aren't as good as his actual stats
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_00]: because last year he was more of a strikeout guy.
[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_00]: This year he's not striking out as many batters
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_00]: but it's not like he's not getting results.
[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Nobody hits him hard.
[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Obviously nobody really barrels him up all that stuff.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's because he gets a lot of soft contact
[00:12:44] [SPEAKER_00]: because people cannot square up those fastballs.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_00]: So look, expected stats are good.
[00:12:50] [SPEAKER_00]: They're not perfect but usually those things
[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_00]: will take strikeouts pretty heavily into account
[00:12:55] [SPEAKER_00]: because it's so self-control as a pitcher
[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_00]: rather than relying on your defense.
[00:13:00] [SPEAKER_00]: But don't you think people would look at Brian
[00:13:02] [SPEAKER_00]: who's walk rate?
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_00]: The fact that maybe the most slept on story
[00:13:06] [SPEAKER_00]: of all pitchers in baseball this year
[00:13:08] [SPEAKER_00]: is he's essentially the new George Kirby.
[00:13:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Kirby's been known as the guy that doesn't walk anybody.
[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Woo legitimately does not walk anybody anymore,
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_00]: which is a crazy turnaround from where he was
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_00]: just in his rookie year.
[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Where his walk rate wasn't off the charts bad
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_00]: but it wasn't great.
[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_00]: It was somewhere right in the middle.
[00:13:27] [SPEAKER_00]: Now he's just like the king of not walking anybody.
[00:13:29] [SPEAKER_00]: So all those things combined,
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_00]: the four wore season, the crazy stuff, full volume.
[00:13:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, he'd probably be about four or five
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_00]: but he'd be in that race if he had thrown a full year.
[00:13:40] [SPEAKER_02]: So there's a couple ways to look at that point right there.
[00:13:43] [SPEAKER_02]: Number one, even with the low walk rate,
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_02]: his fit is still not the best and not close to the best
[00:13:49] [SPEAKER_02]: of that group.
[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_02]: There would be quite a few guys ahead of him
[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_02]: that have a better fit.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_02]: So he's got a three, three fit right now.
[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_02]: All of the top five have a better fit than he does
[00:14:00] [SPEAKER_02]: and that again, he doesn't walk anybody.
[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's a third of fit sequasion,
[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_02]: which is essentially what's your ERA ballpark based
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_02]: on walks hits, sorry, walks strikeouts home runs.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_02]: On that and he already essentially just the best
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_02]: at one and it's still three, three,
[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_02]: which is suggest the numbers don't like it quite as much.
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_02]: The other thing is when you have such a low volume
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_02]: of innings which if he pitches next year
[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_02]: and throws 210 innings, none of this matters.
[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_02]: But for how it is this year based on the PACE
[00:14:32] [SPEAKER_02]: going and the projected 178 or so innings,
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_02]: you would be expected to be a little bit more dominant
[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_02]: in an overwhelming fashion in swing and miss
[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_02]: if you're only throwing that many innings.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_02]: You brought up Corbin Burns,
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_02]: what did Corbin Burns do so well in 2021?
[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Leoverpowered hitters a lot
[00:14:51] [SPEAKER_02]: and we'll overpower hitters but not with strikeouts.
[00:14:55] [SPEAKER_02]: And ultimately voters do want to see that
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_02]: because that is the best form of dominance
[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_02]: that pitchers can do is striking out batters.
[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_02]: Usually if you're picking the best pitchers in baseball,
[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_02]: they also usually strike out the most batters.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_00]: There.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no and those were all good points
[00:15:12] [SPEAKER_00]: and strikeouts seem to play a pretty big account
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: into winning Si Young Awards these days.
[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I'd still put them probably somewhere in that top five.
[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Maybe at the lowest I put them at seven
[00:15:22] [SPEAKER_02]: but he doesn't need to be a 30% strikeout rate
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_02]: but can he go up from 20 to 25%?
[00:15:29] [SPEAKER_02]: I would do a lot that it's a little bit less than what Logan does.
[00:15:33] [SPEAKER_02]: What's Logan strikeout rate right now?
[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_02]: I can look.
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: No, I don't want to say something like that.
[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, not really strikeout percentage.
[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_02]: It's 27% for Logan.
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So like 20, it's not too far off a 27% strikeout rate for Logan.
[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Like we think Logan strikes out enough batters
[00:15:55] [SPEAKER_02]: to want to Si Young Awards.
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02]: So that's 27%.
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Can he get most of the way there?
[00:16:00] [SPEAKER_02]: 25% in the modern day for a pitcher
[00:16:02] [SPEAKER_02]: with as good as stuff as he has is not impossible.
[00:16:05] [SPEAKER_02]: In fact, it is more than likely
[00:16:07] [SPEAKER_02]: as he develops a consistent dominant secondary pitch
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_02]: that he doesn't have right now, dominant.
[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_02]: While it's the key word there, dominant secondary pitch
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_02]: he will the strikeout rate will reflect that pitch's development.
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And that uses it is starting to go up a little bit for him.
[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Like you've seen them put more emphasis on it this year.
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00]: It'll be interesting to see what he does with it in your three
[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_00]: but little by little here
[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you're starting to see the usage in his secondaries jump up a little
[00:16:34] [SPEAKER_00]: which is good because as good as those two fastballs
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_00]: are, you can't just throw two fastballs forever.
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: And you're starting to see him develop some of those other
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: three pitches more because he got the change up.
[00:16:43] [SPEAKER_00]: He's got a sweeper, he's got a slider.
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_00]: He's got some other stuff in his arsenal.
[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: OK, second question in the mail bag.
[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm blanking on who this is from.
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_00]: So apologies if I don't have the question,
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_00]: or the name of the person that sent the question.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_00]: But they ask which position group
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: that is underperform for the Mariners this year
[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_00]: will bounce back.
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So this is from, let me look in,
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_02]: son of Kamos Sabe on YouTube.
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_02]: OK.
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I pronounced that correctly.
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_02]: What position group is most likely to bounce back?
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_02]: I think you can boil this question down to OK.
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_02]: So which positions severely underperformed this year?
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: The list I have is center, right first in your, sorry,
[00:17:27] [SPEAKER_02]: your tire and field.
[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_00]: You didn't have to lift the whole roster, but I should have just
[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_02]: said, well, you could pick seven out of nine in the starting lineup.
[00:17:36] [SPEAKER_02]: They're the ones who underperformed.
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's center, right, and the entire Mariners
[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_02]: and field, not counting cow rally.
[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_02]: The realistic guys to bounce back
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_02]: who have anchored spots for next season.
[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_02]: I think of the two guys you can decide on here,
[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_02]: because we don't know who's going to be the full-time
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_02]: first basement for the Mariners.
[00:17:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Next year, we don't know who the full-time second
[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_02]: basement is.
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_02]: We don't know who the full-time third basement
[00:17:55] [SPEAKER_02]: is, therefore, it is hard to predict bounce back.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_02]: So the decision is between Julio Rodriguez and JP Crawford.
[00:18:01] [SPEAKER_02]: And I picked Julio.
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Tell me why?
[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_02]: So I chose why because he is going to be in a prime age
[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_02]: next year.
[00:18:14] [SPEAKER_02]: JP's going to be 30 as a short stop.
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Someone guys start slowing down, especially when they start
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_02]: hitting in Seattle when they turn 30.
[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Some of these guys fall off a cliff.
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And Julio's going to be just 24 next season.
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_02]: And I just have a hard time seeing Julio Rodriguez
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_02]: with a 6-91, OPS next year.
[00:18:36] [SPEAKER_02]: If Julio is just going to get back to sort of his career
[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_02]: norm of a close to 800 OPS, then that combined with a center
[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_02]: field defense would be as valuable as the Mariners probably need.
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Julio Rodriguez to be, of course, we want them to be better
[00:18:53] [SPEAKER_02]: than that.
[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_02]: When in terms of what the Mariners need for a productive player
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_02]: in center field, 800 would be just fine.
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_02]: There's another interesting thing when I was trying to think
[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_02]: about this for JP.
[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Did you know what I said about that for a minute?
[00:19:07] [SPEAKER_02]: Well, sorry.
[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_02]: I was going to say why wasn't going to choose JP, but I'll let you go.
[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_02]: Go ahead.
[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_00]: So he's my pick.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And he's my pick because how could he possibly have a year
[00:19:16] [SPEAKER_00]: like this again next year?
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_00]: He's barely hitting 200.
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_00]: His OPS is 636.
[00:19:22] [SPEAKER_00]: He's battled injuries all year.
[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Shouldn't there be some bounce back for him in 2025?
[00:19:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not saying he's going to have the 130 WRC plus season again,
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_00]: but I still fully believe that a fully healthy season of JP Crawford.
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_00]: He can be a 110 to 115 WRC plus hitter as OPS is in the 750s whole walk
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_00]: a lot and you've seen his deep ends pick back up this year.
[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_00]: So that may be his career year.
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_00]: What he didn't 23.
[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't see any reason why he can't be in a above average bat that hits
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_00]: toward the top of the order if he is fully healthy in 2024.
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's not that unrealistic to say is that like a 110 or so number
[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_00]: comes 2025, which is why I picked him at the spot because this is like
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_00]: he's gone from a total career high to a total career low in terms of his production.
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I think there's some middle ground there.
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_02]: So you think that and I think JP in general, his based on his offensive
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_02]: approach approach has a more sustainable idea of what he wants to do
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_02]: at the plate year over year outside of Julio who it mostly depends on
[00:20:29] [SPEAKER_02]: as we've seen this year.
[00:20:30] [SPEAKER_02]: How many pitches he gets to hit in the strike zone?
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_02]: And this year people stopped throwing pitches in the strikes.
[00:20:35] [SPEAKER_02]: He's still swung and look at the results.
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_02]: But did you know that JP's OPS this season is actually closer
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_02]: to his career OPS than his OPS last year was aka it is more close to the
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_02]: median JP Crawford season than last year.
[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't totally shock me, but again, last year, the things he did and
[00:20:58] [SPEAKER_00]: everything he changed about his approach and his like the fact he was hitting
[00:21:02] [SPEAKER_00]: the ball harder just felt like such a step forward.
[00:21:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's totally lost.
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think he just all of a sudden one day had that fall out of his back
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_00]: pocket and he can't get it back because 2023 felt like such a
[00:21:14] [SPEAKER_00]: step forward for what JP Crawford does and who he is as a hitter.
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's lost on him.
[00:21:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I think the injury had a big part of why he didn't play the way he did in 2024
[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_00]: and I think he can get back to some form of that.
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Lost?
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_02]: No, but it does look like that number is a bigger outlier than this is an outlier
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_02]: bad season.
[00:21:34] [SPEAKER_00]: I guess we'll find out.
[00:21:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I'm going to be honest, you're putting high praise or high expectations
[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_00]: on Julio again in 2025.
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be honest, what are like maybe I'm a wet blanket for this and a
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Debbie Downer?
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_00]: What are my expectations for Julio in 2025?
[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_00]: For what he set my expectations for him is he's going to be a 110 WRC
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_00]: plus hitter.
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_00]: That's what he has shown to be in the last two years of his career and until he
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_00]: proves otherwise that is what I'm going into 2025 believing about him.
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_00]: He is going to be a very slightly above league average bat who plays good
[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_00]: defense and can steal some bases.
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_00]: In the last two seasons outside of a ridiculous August in 2023, he is not given us any
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_00]: inkling of who he was in 2022.
[00:22:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Like there has no prolonged stretch of superstar play at the plate and look,
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_00]: this is going to be a tough and probably brutal off season because we don't think they're
[00:22:28] [SPEAKER_00]: going to spend very much money, which sucks because what would I do if if you know,
[00:22:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to be a bit more confident in the last two years of his career.
[00:22:43] [SPEAKER_00]: I think he's a slightly above league average hitter right now.
[00:22:48] [SPEAKER_02]: So you're less confident in his ability to bounce back because a 110 WRC plus
[00:22:52] [SPEAKER_02]: schoolio combined with his defense is a four and a half win player.
[00:22:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Probably what's he out right now 102?
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_00]: That's not that much of a bounce back.
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_00]: I have more confidence in JP being a 110 WRC plus hitter next year than Hulu being a 130 to 140.
[00:23:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Like again, this is like I'm not this is my expectation of kind of uh, it's kind of unfair.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_02]: Why is that unfair? That's a sliding skill.
[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_02]: Well but J. P. only has to get to a 110.
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Well one's expected to be a lot greater than the other.
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_02]: That's not not not wrong, but that who is only cross one 140 once and he's got under 140 twice.
[00:23:39] [SPEAKER_00]: So again so say 130 I have more confidence in JP to be a 110 than I do for Hulu I would be a 130.
[00:23:45] [SPEAKER_02]: But a bounce back for Hulu would be a 120 wouldn't even need to make it to 130.
[00:23:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I still have my doubts.
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_02]: We're not saying what would it take for who's going to win an MVP?
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_02]: We need him to bounce back.
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_02]: We need him to have an 800 OPS.
[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_02]: That's what we need it.
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_02]: That's a bounce back for Hulu next year.
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Right and outside of one month in the last two seasons has he proven that like has he given you
[00:24:12] [SPEAKER_00]: enough confidence in the last two years to say he is going to do that?
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_02]: No, no he hasn't but JP Crawford you could say the same thing.
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_02]: He's he's been hurt but Lyle he was so good in just the second half last year.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_02]: He had three good months to really excellent months to finish last year the first three months.
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty close to what he's doing right now.
[00:24:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah that's true.
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_02]: So it's a tough time. We can we can marginalize a nitpick with both of these guys I think.
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_02]: Ultimately I think the Mariners based on all the positions I let I read off at the start of this you
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_02]: know what they need they need both of them to bounce back that's what they need.
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah they do I just like again obviously for three years in a row now people have had sky high
[00:24:56] [SPEAKER_00]: expectations for what Hulu could be in each respective season and this is just where I stand for
[00:25:03] [SPEAKER_00]: who he's going to be as a hitter in 2025. Like this is right now who I think he is as a player.
[00:25:09] [SPEAKER_00]: He is a slightly above league average hitter and if I go into the year believing that's what
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_00]: he's going to be and he performs to that then okay that's what you expected.
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_00]: If he's better than that great then he blew your expectations out of the water.
[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_00]: But this is kind of the precedent he sent the he set the last two seasons.
[00:25:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's get to our next question. Let's break up the the arguing here with some tips and fun.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_02]: This is for Mitchell Hopkins on YouTube. His question is it's pack two rivalry week actually it's
[00:25:40] [SPEAKER_02]: technically the Lyle now six pack congratulations back 12. Who wins the apple cup and who wins the
[00:25:49] [SPEAKER_02]: U. Dob Civil War is Oregon State Oregon for those unfamiliar aren't you not allowed to call the
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_02]: Civil War anymore I don't know well everyone calls it the Civil War still accept the schools okay so my problem
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_02]: with it you know my beef is I have no problem with them wanting to change the name if you want to change the
[00:26:04] [SPEAKER_02]: name and I I get the reason why they did I just would rather than actually chose in a different name besides
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_00]: the rivalry game. Aha yeah that's fair. Well you could tell the people a lot more about Oregon
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_00]: State than I can I will say Oregon is looked pretty underwhelming to say the least and they're first
[00:26:22] [SPEAKER_00]: to gain I mean they almost lost to Idaho at home and then they beat Boise state by a little bit.
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll still pick them to win I don't think it's going to be an inspiring win but
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_00]: sure I'll pick Oregon to win. Washington Washington State I think that game's going to be close I actually
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_00]: think it has a chance to be high scoring too. I'll say Washington wins that one but John
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Tyer for Washington State has like a crazy game both through the air and on the ground
[00:26:49] [SPEAKER_00]: but Washington just barely finds a way to win. I think both games are going to be close too
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I'll give the I'll give the coogs in edge I think the I think this stale environment is going to
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_02]: almost help Wahzu. I would say they probably should be playing this game in Pullman I have no idea why it's
[00:27:05] [SPEAKER_02]: not being played in Pullman a lot of terrible decisions being made by Pack 12 leadership and President's
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_02]: time after time after time after time after time again which ultimately led to this game being played
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_02]: at Lumen for some reason it's going to be half empty if that might be less than that might be a third
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_02]: full for this game I was checking out tickets to get still like 80 blocks for a game that's
[00:27:27] [SPEAKER_00]: going to have no one at it I can't believe that. That's actually down it was like $200 or earlier this week
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_02]: like they're going to have to cover seats it's it's stupid it's not college football
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_00]: you're playing it in NFL stadium which is still crazy that there's not going to be a bunch of
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_00]: you dumb fans at it because it's not like it's a big trek it's in Seattle who knows who knows
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_02]: but I think that one will be that one's gonna be close I'll give Wahzu the edge there because
[00:27:56] [SPEAKER_02]: I think Matthier's X factor I think is a good word to use for him with his with his legs and I think
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_02]: you'd have a pretty good game both these games I really feel like you go either side I do feel like
[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_02]: there's a bigger talent gap between the between Oregon and Oregon state than there is between
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_02]: Washington and in in Wahzu especially with the continuity of the Wahzu coaching staff that certainly
[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_02]: helps a little bit more than than the continuity of Oregon states coaching staff you know looking
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_02]: at this the Oregon state game I'm not going to dive into it too much because I have plenty of time
[00:28:28] [SPEAKER_02]: to talk about it on Saturday before the game actually happens. I like the Beaver's chances a lot more
[00:28:36] [SPEAKER_02]: than I did before the season started I thought this game was going to be an absolute blowout
[00:28:41] [SPEAKER_02]: but ducks have looked bad they've looked bad for a team that has as much talent as they do so
[00:28:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's going to get that's going to come down to the second half beads are going to
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_02]: try and hold the balls along as possible but I think ultimately a ducks have too much star power
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_02]: and they'll probably win on one of their receivers is going to break off if they go on and
[00:29:00] [SPEAKER_00]: and that'll be the difference. I like those predictions
[00:29:04] [SPEAKER_02]: but at least they're playing it on campus so the energy will be good unlike again I just can't
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_02]: believe they're playing that game at Luminfield. Yeah all right before we get to the next question let's
[00:29:16] [SPEAKER_00]: take a quick pause we're going to talk to you about our friends at Pagaches Pove 85 you want to
[00:29:20] [SPEAKER_00]: watch them rival recalling football this week you want to watch the mariners you want to watch
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_00]: see hawks the NFL basically whatever you want you want to go watch boarding events head over there
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_00]: you want to have some great food head over there you want to play some pool or some darts head over there
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_00]: you want to do all of that well it's all over at Pove 85 and if you head over during happy hour
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_00]: there's great drink specials it's three and four dollars from two to six p.m. on Monday through
[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Fridays hold nine yards that's all over at Pagaches Pove 85 in Kirkland.
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_00]: Question number four we got this one on Instagram and the question is why don't the mariners
[00:29:56] [SPEAKER_00]: act more like the Kraken let's see if I can get who sent this one in right I want to make sure
[00:30:02] [SPEAKER_00]: try to give people credit for these because they're nice enough to send them in this was from
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Andrew j's Sunday on Instagram he said why don't the mariners
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_00]: spent okay the exact question if you wanted to get it word for word right the Kraken
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_00]: have spent a boatload of cash this off season will the em's ownership ever take a hint
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not seeing the mariners shouldn't spend more money they should spend way more money than they
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: spend right now but like what are we doing there there different sports would you like
[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_02]: a fun fact mile sure you want to know where the Kraken rank in cap spending many chill
[00:30:40] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah laid on me 23rd what would people be saying if the mariners were 23rd in payroll
[00:30:49] [SPEAKER_00]: well it wouldn't be good that's about where they were last year there are a little bit higher now
[00:30:54] [SPEAKER_02]: they're in like they're what's 16th now yeah 23rd I will say in the NHL the margins are
[00:31:03] [SPEAKER_02]: smaller to get up to the number two payroll it's only 10 million dollars but the difference between
[00:31:07] [SPEAKER_02]: the salary for in the NHL which is 65 million in the cap which is 88 million it's really not that much money
[00:31:14] [SPEAKER_02]: so we're dealing with smaller margins here less money comes in with the NHL therefore they
[00:31:18] [SPEAKER_02]: spend less on players but like guys the mariners outspent the Kraken this off season like not even
[00:31:25] [SPEAKER_02]: spending money on real free agents besides Mitch Garber like literally just adding the increased
[00:31:32] [SPEAKER_02]: pay of Josh Rojas of trading for Louis Sirius signing Mitch Garber adding Jorge Polanco,
[00:31:40] [SPEAKER_02]: sign Ryan Stannick like without even lifting a finger and going after real free agents they
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_02]: outspent outspent the Kraken I love what the Kraken are doing I'm it's great it's fantastic but they
[00:31:52] [SPEAKER_02]: also have a floor to appease to and a lot more roster spots to fill it's and also it's just
[00:31:59] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a different sport it's like complaining about teams not spending in a it's like look at the
[00:32:03] [SPEAKER_02]: NFL teams that spend all this money will they have to it's literally in the CBA that they have
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_02]: to spend this much money and that the Phil or roster and a practice squad well when the next
[00:32:17] [SPEAKER_00]: CBA negotiations go on in baseball which is probably going to be another fat lock out when that day
[00:32:22] [SPEAKER_00]: comes around they should get a salary for implemented I'll tell you that because here's
[00:32:28] [SPEAKER_00]: never going to go for that you mean you're gonna put it in a cat you're saying the owners would
[00:32:34] [SPEAKER_02]: ever go for salary for owners would ever go for that because then they well they would go for it
[00:32:39] [SPEAKER_02]: if they if based the players agreed to a cap which they would never agree to right yeah that's fair
[00:32:44] [SPEAKER_02]: and so I didn't mean to come off in a disparaging way and drew I appreciate the question
[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_02]: I just think it's really difficult to compare sports and spending I will say if the mariners should
[00:32:55] [SPEAKER_00]: take a hint anywhere from the crack and it's extending their own players because the crack and have
[00:33:00] [SPEAKER_00]: now extended Matty Beniers they've extended Adam Larson they've extended Jared McCann
[00:33:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean they've made some for agents onnings too but they have extended guys in house
[00:33:12] [SPEAKER_00]: like I know the mariners have made some moves in for agency and they've extended a couple guys in
[00:33:17] [SPEAKER_00]: house between Luis between Julio if you want to count Evan White when they extended Evan White yeah
[00:33:25] [SPEAKER_00]: they should extend more guys in house that are contributing to this team because not only are
[00:33:30] [SPEAKER_00]: they not spending money in free agency but they're not spending money on their own players right now either so
[00:33:34] [SPEAKER_02]: they should do that what's the mariners in house extension counter we have three we're throwing
[00:33:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Evan White and if you want to count Evan White yeah that's another one they've offered more I
[00:33:44] [SPEAKER_02]: know they offered counting one I'm guessing they offered Gilbert one two yeah but they're probably
[00:33:49] [SPEAKER_02]: I know I know and so what are what are the crack and at three yeah so it's about even
[00:33:57] [SPEAKER_02]: well the the mariners should still do it more say them out playoffs success too funny
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_00]: well in the same period in in a three year span now now's dredged out to 22 years and see what happens
[00:34:12] [SPEAKER_02]: then we might have to start a crack and podcast too
[00:34:14] [SPEAKER_02]: you know I need a lot more hockey to do that anyway but if the mariners want to go
[00:34:22] [SPEAKER_02]: sign more free agents I won't say no I won't say no I just think it's difficult to compare
[00:34:27] [SPEAKER_02]: yeah that's fair next question this comes on Instagram from Chuck 7346 and the question is
[00:34:36] [SPEAKER_02]: which starting picture are you trading this off season for bat our answers are different on this
[00:34:44] [SPEAKER_00]: we talked about it a little bit before we started recording you know what I'll let you go first
[00:34:49] [SPEAKER_02]: the picture I am trading for a bat this off season if you have to let me note this if you have to
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_02]: is Logan Gilbert because he will get you the most return he will hit free agency first
[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_02]: and you'll be the most expensive of your in house guys that are under rookie cont under
[00:35:13] [SPEAKER_02]: arbitration contracts it makes the most sense this pains me I don't want to trade Logan Gilbert
[00:35:21] [SPEAKER_02]: but if you want to get the best bat possible you're trading look if you want to get the best bat
[00:35:28] [SPEAKER_02]: possible and that bat is actually available someone that is worth Logan Gilbert's value this off season
[00:35:35] [SPEAKER_02]: then you trade him and oh by the way before you trade him you get the way from him that he's not
[00:35:44] [SPEAKER_02]: signing an extension sir you need to know that for certain but once you know that
[00:35:50] [SPEAKER_02]: then you have to do it because he's he's reaching for agency first who'll be expensive and he's
[00:35:55] [SPEAKER_02]: the most valuable well Logan Gilbert's value ever be higher than it is right now yeah or no I
[00:36:02] [SPEAKER_00]: think there's a world that can continue to get better yeah but is his value going to be
[00:36:07] [SPEAKER_00]: higher there could be a chance people pay a pretty penny for starting pitching
[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_00]: which is why which is why honestly like we can get into my answer here too I have multiple but
[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_00]: that's why I think like you seem to really undervalue or that's I shouldn't say undervalue
[00:36:26] [SPEAKER_00]: it like it's a certainty you seem to believe that Luis Castillo would not get you much of a
[00:36:31] [SPEAKER_00]: package in return whether it's because of the no trade clause because of the age because of the
[00:36:35] [SPEAKER_00]: contract again people pay a pretty penny for starting pitching especially very good starting
[00:36:40] [SPEAKER_00]: pitching and I think if the Mariners were to eat most of that contract and send them somewhere
[00:36:44] [SPEAKER_00]: he was okay going to you could still get real bats back for the least Castillo now the problem
[00:36:49] [SPEAKER_02]: is why are you trading him if you're gonna eat most of the contract because you need bats the whole
[00:36:55] [SPEAKER_02]: point but the whole point of trading him in the first place is saving money so you can get bats
[00:37:01] [SPEAKER_00]: but they're not gonna spend money in free agency on bats if you could or if you can already eat
[00:37:06] [SPEAKER_00]: money why wouldn't you just keep them because you have got to find a way to shake up this
[00:37:12] [SPEAKER_00]: offense and get it better and like who's in free like let me throw this back to you who in free
[00:37:17] [SPEAKER_00]: agency do you really want Tony Tenders and Juan Soto yeah like guys like that you think the
[00:37:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Mariners are getting in bidding wars for those guys do they ever get in bidding wars I'm down
[00:37:30] [SPEAKER_00]: like again just take out the value beers were one photo like we've said a million times but
[00:37:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think they're getting in bidding wars for those guys and if that's the case what is
[00:37:38] [SPEAKER_00]: an extra twenty four million dollars a year on the books for the least Castillo gonna change
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think the Mariners are trading the least Castillo to eat his twenty four million dollars
[00:37:45] [SPEAKER_02]: that makes no sense well you might I think they need to go get a bat but eating his money the whole
[00:37:51] [SPEAKER_02]: point of trading a pitcher is to not have to worry about paying them in the future
[00:37:57] [SPEAKER_00]: well then you're gonna tank his value for what you could get back
[00:38:02] [SPEAKER_00]: well I would again you have got you have to find a way to get offense and if this is the only way
[00:38:10] [SPEAKER_00]: and you think there's real bats you can get back for him then eat most of the money but they
[00:38:16] [SPEAKER_02]: could they won't they won't be able to afford the bats they're trading for okay how about this
[00:38:21] [SPEAKER_00]: contract split 50 50 or maybe even 60 40 okay so then then the team that takes the weaset's paying
[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_02]: $12 million a year you could try but then I will again bring up that all comes down to what
[00:38:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Luis wants because he holds the cards and any trade that has his name in it all of the cards he
[00:38:41] [SPEAKER_02]: he turns into the president of baseball operations sorry he skips past that he turns into the
[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_02]: chairman because the trade doesn't happen if Luis Castillo says I don't want to get traded from
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_02]: Seattle I like pitching here I bought a home here I like living here yeah
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_00]: all true that being said the main point of that I'm trying to make about Luis is the idea that he will
[00:39:06] [SPEAKER_00]: not bring you back much value if if you do the right thing and you say okay this is not
[00:39:13] [SPEAKER_00]: out saving money this is about going to get offense and make this team better which should be the
[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_00]: whole point I think he can still warrant you back real value I still think Luis Castillo can get
[00:39:23] [SPEAKER_00]: you back Kobe Mayo has to curse that whoever it is from the Orioles if you were to agree to a trade
[00:39:28] [SPEAKER_02]: there if you eat the money if you can somehow find the way to convince Mariners ownership to eat
[00:39:35] [SPEAKER_02]: all of that money and take on new players who will be expensive within three years then yeah I
[00:39:41] [SPEAKER_02]: yes but it all rests on that no trade clause because with that no trade clause there's no way
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_02]: you're trading that money there's no way you're trading all of that money away and getting anything
[00:39:54] [SPEAKER_02]: of equal value in return you will get less value trading him away if you're trading away all
[00:40:00] [SPEAKER_00]: that money too well by the time said players you trade for my get expensive Luis would be off
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_00]: the books by that point so then it's fine the money the money's but God you need more than just
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_00]: those players well but it's a start it you've got to you've got to start somewhere and again
[00:40:17] [SPEAKER_00]: they need a third baseman they need a first baseman they might need a second baseman they
[00:40:21] [SPEAKER_00]: might need an outfielder we'll see what happens at dh like and they won't spend in
[00:40:26] [SPEAKER_02]: reagency so it has to come from somewhere it's a start but it is not it is not what I would
[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_02]: put at the top of the board this off season in terms of if you're making a two do on on on things
[00:40:39] [SPEAKER_02]: to try I don't think that should be your number one thing because what does that tell Luis Castillo
[00:40:45] [SPEAKER_02]: next season if he has to veto you trading him off the roster and then he shows up at spring
[00:40:51] [SPEAKER_02]: training and he's like oh what do you guys think about me hmm fine so here's the second point
[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_00]: in this topic that I was going to make I want you to start this again for the sake of just
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_00]: the start of this question eliminate all other factors who do you think is more likely to sign an
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_00]: extension here Luis Castillo we're past him for now.
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Logan Gilbert or George Kirby just one answer Logan Gilbert so why not trade Kirby
[00:41:20] [SPEAKER_02]: because who says Logan Gilbert actually signs that extension if you think you're probably not
[00:41:26] [SPEAKER_00]: keeping both so if you think you have the chance to make it happen with one and you have to trade
[00:41:32] [SPEAKER_00]: an arm like I don't want to trade any of these arms but if you have to trade one I don't think
[00:41:38] [SPEAKER_02]: it's crazy so what percentage is there we're doing are we saying Logan as a 20% chances sign
[00:41:43] [SPEAKER_02]: George is zero we're saying Logan as a 60% chance to sign and George is a 20 we're talking
[00:41:48] [SPEAKER_00]: about here. I think if the Mariners gave him a fair contract he'd be pretty open to it.
[00:41:53] [SPEAKER_02]: What's a fair contract and would they be willing to pay him that because you know
[00:41:56] [SPEAKER_02]: to fair contract for what Logan Gilbert's doing right now 30 million dollars a year you know what
[00:42:01] [SPEAKER_02]: they're not going to give Logan Gilbert right now 30 million dollars a year.
[00:42:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Well they should have given something close to it. They should if they were willing to actually
[00:42:09] [SPEAKER_02]: pay up then then we wouldn't be talking about trading starting pictures.
[00:42:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Well yeah I know George Kirby has the extra year control but
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_00]: look the first part of this is just speculation because you know the general public and the
[00:42:27] [SPEAKER_00]: people I feel like no so little about George Kirby's personality because he's not really out there
[00:42:32] [SPEAKER_00]: he's pretty do himself he's pretty introverted he doesn't do a lot of media stuff but
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_00]: so again what I'm saying maybe not true in any in any way shape or form but just from like
[00:42:42] [SPEAKER_00]: reading his body language and stuff whether it's on TV or wherever when you watch him like
[00:42:47] [SPEAKER_00]: he doesn't always seem like the happiest camper all the time. I don't know if that means
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_00]: he doesn't like being here I don't know if that means that's just how he is but if you really think
[00:42:55] [SPEAKER_00]: that like he has no chance of signing an extension and isn't interested in it at any point
[00:43:02] [SPEAKER_00]: paired with the fact that he has not taken the jump forward that people were hoping he was
[00:43:07] [SPEAKER_00]: going to take this year. He has had a bad six weeks he had a six eight eRA for the month of
[00:43:12] [SPEAKER_00]: August it's now way over five in September he still really doesn't have a true out pitch so
[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_00]: he's not really striking guys out but all that being said you get a haul back for George Kirby so
[00:43:26] [SPEAKER_00]: all that combined is there a world where he actually makes the most sense to trade
[00:43:34] [SPEAKER_02]: depends what you want back like I said I was trading the idea behind trading Logan Gilbert
[00:43:39] [SPEAKER_02]: is that you will get the most out of trading any of your starters so let me let me piggyback off that
[00:43:45] [SPEAKER_00]: point I'll use with Jeff Passen talked about our Brock and talk this week because we've we've
[00:43:49] [SPEAKER_00]: talked about the orials is a very obvious team that would make sense to trade with he's mentioned them
[00:43:54] [SPEAKER_00]: to pass in but he threw out another team he said the red socks and he threw out some of their
[00:44:00] [SPEAKER_00]: the names of their prospects and I will he didn't say this he thought the red socks probably
[00:44:05] [SPEAKER_00]: wouldn't be willing to trade this player but saw ask the questions all ask it to you.
[00:44:11] [SPEAKER_00]: In sensitive comments aside like if if you have a problem with what this guy said I understand
[00:44:17] [SPEAKER_00]: like like obviously and if you don't want him as a part of your talking about and I do but
[00:44:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I get it and if you're listening and you have a problem with what he said then that is totally
[00:44:27] [SPEAKER_00]: understandable we totally like and if you don't want him around the team I get it but if you're
[00:44:32] [SPEAKER_00]: just talking about the player would you trade George Kirby for jaren to ran straight up.
[00:44:39] [SPEAKER_02]: I said it be tough yeah you said it would be tough but that's about as equals it gets right I mean
[00:44:45] [SPEAKER_02]: it's a big league all star with the exact same amount of control etc really good season and
[00:44:51] [SPEAKER_02]: essentially fits exactly what you need oh he said like eight and a half wins.
[00:44:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah I know and he's an outfueled there and he hit and he hits for average and he hits for power
[00:45:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and he's fast and he's athletic all things you just don't have enough of on this roster it's
[00:45:07] [SPEAKER_02]: legitimately everything so man would I do that it's tough it's really tough but I didn't have it
[00:45:17] [SPEAKER_02]: I never it like it's like he opened his mouth and what he said is just error it is just terrible
[00:45:23] [SPEAKER_02]: should not be said so for me I'll just I'll use that as my reason to say no but on a talent perspective
[00:45:32] [SPEAKER_02]: if you're looking for equal value for either of your starters that's it it's that right
[00:45:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and if it wasn't gonna be that like the red socks would have to give you a flurry of prospects
[00:45:47] [SPEAKER_00]: somebody like willier a breu was the other name that was thrown out there but that guy can't be
[00:45:52] [SPEAKER_00]: headliner for George Kirby he's had a really good he's had a nice year he's had like a three win season
[00:45:56] [SPEAKER_00]: but if you were gonna trade Kirby to Boston you've got to get back either a breu or raffiella
[00:46:03] [SPEAKER_00]: like one of their two rookies but you've also got to get one of their blue chip prospects back
[00:46:07] [SPEAKER_00]: somebody like Roman Anthony who by the way we saw it down at all star week and just like lit up that
[00:46:12] [SPEAKER_00]: prospect showcase on that Saturday somebody with real power outfueled her top 10 prospect etc
[00:46:18] [SPEAKER_02]: and that's where it comes back to why are you willing to trade a starting picture if you're not
[00:46:22] [SPEAKER_02]: gonna get equal value back and then we respond and say yeah right it doesn't make any sense because
[00:46:28] [SPEAKER_02]: you're not gonna get back what they're actually worth but when you're unwilling to spend the money
[00:46:33] [SPEAKER_02]: to make up for that like lack of return in talent then this is like this is what happens
[00:46:39] [SPEAKER_02]: like do the rays get equal value for all the players they trade away no
[00:46:44] [SPEAKER_02]: because they have no choice because they can't spend the money to pay those players right that's
[00:46:49] [SPEAKER_02]: the situation the mariner's in there is a very real chance if you're trading one of these pictures
[00:46:54] [SPEAKER_02]: in the op season you're not gonna get back equal talent and return and you're going to essentially
[00:46:58] [SPEAKER_02]: take a talent loss on the trade what you know what is not gonna make the mariner's better next year
[00:47:03] [SPEAKER_02]: the if you're thinking about it realistically the best case scenario this op season if the
[00:47:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Orioles can offer you yeah because you know they're not gonna trade gunner they're not gonna trade
[00:47:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Adley they probably wouldn't even trade Jackson holiday so no and and you know cursed add and
[00:47:23] [SPEAKER_02]: Colton cows are are good players they're not jaren deran no they're not proven or like
[00:47:29] [SPEAKER_00]: cows are has a chance to win rookie the year but he's still not jaren deran and by proven i mean
[00:47:34] [SPEAKER_00]: while cows are how to good year he's got to repeat it a little bit this is jaren deran's best here by far
[00:47:39] [SPEAKER_00]: but he has had other good years aside from this it just wasn't at this level however we'll say it again
[00:47:45] [SPEAKER_00]: if you have issues with the common city put out there you think players in that clubhouse or people in
[00:47:50] [SPEAKER_00]: the organization would have issues with the common see put out there and that's your reason for you don't
[00:47:54] [SPEAKER_00]: want any part of them we understand that's that's totally reasonable but if you're just looking
[00:47:58] [SPEAKER_00]: at player come to player the value there is close and make a lot of sense because the mariner's
[00:48:04] [SPEAKER_02]: culture a lot with that and something like that is just not anything that's beneficial to any sort
[00:48:11] [SPEAKER_02]: of clubhouse period so right and ultimately it's all speculation right because maybe the red
[00:48:18] [SPEAKER_02]: socks very well might not want to trade jaren deran's like oh why would the mariner's want to trade
[00:48:22] [SPEAKER_02]: pitcher why would the red socks want to trade jaren deran he's one of their best players right
[00:48:27] [SPEAKER_02]: this year he is their best player yeah there you go and Logan Gilbert is the mariner's best player this
[00:48:34] [SPEAKER_02]: look at that talk about trading him how unfortunate before we get to our next question let's hear
[00:48:40] [SPEAKER_02]: word from game time there's just a couple weeks left in the baseball season if you're looking
[00:48:44] [SPEAKER_02]: to get out to the park one last time let game time help you get there with killer last minute deals

[00:49:00] [SPEAKER_02]: deals I'm looking at it's nine dollars to get in today on Friday to watch Jacob de Grom that sounds
[00:49:07] [SPEAKER_02]: like a pretty good deal to me fifteen dollars on Saturday and eleven dollars on Sunday get a panoramic
[00:49:13] [SPEAKER_02]: view of your seat and toggle the all in pricing feature so you know how much you're paying
[00:49:17] [SPEAKER_02]: and what the view is before you buy your purchase is covered with the most flexible customer service
[00:49:22] [SPEAKER_02]: policy in the ticketing industry take the guest work out of buying tickets what game time

[00:49:31] [SPEAKER_02]: first purchase terms apply again create an account and redeem code j us t b a c b a l l for twenty
[00:49:39] [SPEAKER_02]: dollars off download the game time app today last minute tickets slowest price guaranteed
[00:49:46] [SPEAKER_00]: penultimate question lile way it's coming on let me ask this one because i think it's my turn to
[00:49:52] [SPEAKER_00]: ask but okay you've got you got one for the end that's important that you fire up so
[00:49:58] [SPEAKER_00]: this next question is on instagram always a favorite question by the way when we get questions
[00:50:03] [SPEAKER_00]: on this topic let me again make sure i have the name right because again we appreciate everybody
[00:50:08] [SPEAKER_00]: that sends in these questions they're awesome thanks for putting in the time to think about it
[00:50:12] [SPEAKER_00]: but this is from cage a keta on instagram and they and they said what happened to k talk let me
[00:50:23] [SPEAKER_00]: say you think we forgot about our guy you think we just forgot about them absolutely not people
[00:50:30] [SPEAKER_00]: there's two reasons the Kyle Tucker talk on this podcast has simmered in the last few weeks
[00:50:36] [SPEAKER_00]: number one he's been injured for about three months he's now back healthy but he was injured for
[00:50:41] [SPEAKER_00]: a long time number two the trade deadline ended there is in this current time period no possible
[00:50:49] [SPEAKER_00]: way in which the Seattle Mariners could acquire Kyle Tucker however the very first day the
[00:50:56] [SPEAKER_00]: offseason starts were fucking back like we are gonna miss no time waste no time as soon as the
[00:51:04] [SPEAKER_00]: offseason starts and Kyle this course and Kyle Tucker discourse will start again the hike is still
[00:51:11] [SPEAKER_02]: on case people were wondering that hasn't changed if the Mariners trade form in December we're
[00:51:16] [SPEAKER_00]: hiking a mountain in a snow we're going we're vlogging again so group outing any of the ones to join
[00:51:23] [SPEAKER_00]: us we'll let people know where we're going it's probably gonna be mailbox peak well that you
[00:51:26] [SPEAKER_00]: know the day we'll let you know the time if you want to join meet up with us and we're going like
[00:51:31] [SPEAKER_00]: we're doubling down like it'll it'll be this offseason that offers on the table it'll be when he's
[00:51:36] [SPEAKER_00]: a free agent after 2025 when the offers on the table if he wears a Mariners uniform we're hiking
[00:51:42] [SPEAKER_02]: you know sources have said that Kyle Tucker heard some of these rumors and has been dodging
[00:51:48] [SPEAKER_02]: the Marin layer podcast in hopes of having this idea of going to Seattle go away oh I couldn't
[00:51:56] [SPEAKER_00]: help and notice when he was rehabbing in Seattle last time the Astros were here he was uh he was
[00:52:00] [SPEAKER_00]: pretty quick to make his way into the dugout he might have wanted either either wanted to
[00:52:07] [SPEAKER_00]: wanted to dodge the mic because he couldn't be seen he couldn't be seen tampering and he or
[00:52:12] [SPEAKER_00]: and or he wants to keep everything under wraps he can't let the people know he wants out of Houston
[00:52:17] [SPEAKER_00]: he can't let the people know he actually loves hitting in Seattle he can't let the people know
[00:52:21] [SPEAKER_00]: he's going to try to cook up a trade to get to Seattle this offseason he's been always the Astros
[00:52:25] [SPEAKER_02]: purposely holding him away from Mariners oh I think they are of course they are you think the
[00:52:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Astros want to get a Mariners uniform no yeah there I bet you it was up to the Astros you
[00:52:39] [SPEAKER_00]: wouldn't have even been on that trip in the first place don't even let them get a sniff of Pacific
[00:52:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Northwest air don't don't even let him get a second of looking around and being like while this
[00:52:49] [SPEAKER_00]: place rules way better than that industrial dump of Houston I'm getting at it here
[00:52:57] [SPEAKER_02]: we'll see you soon K-tuck we'll see you soon we did not forget about you
[00:53:01] [SPEAKER_00]: now also I can't help but notice no but uh wait I was about to say I can't help but notice nobody on the
[00:53:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Mariners where is number 30 wait does Austin vote where 30 I think so well he's changing his number actually
[00:53:13] [SPEAKER_00]: well he's a free agent at the end of the year so either he either he'd come back and he changes
[00:53:20] [SPEAKER_00]: number or it would be available or votes signs back first keeps the number then they trade for K-tuck
[00:53:27] [SPEAKER_00]: he goes up to Austin vote this says listen what do we have to work out for me to wear number 30
[00:53:31] [SPEAKER_02]: and both I'm sure would a blige or no actually it's backwards both goes up to K-tuck and says
[00:53:36] [SPEAKER_00]: I will take a Bentley for number 30 and actually I don't know if Cal Tucker has that type of
[00:53:44] [SPEAKER_02]: money yet if he's a mariner he will have a nice big contract oh so yeah he's gonna have that money
[00:53:53] [SPEAKER_02]: and what does he get making his last year of our 20 million dollars yet he can afford a Bentley
[00:53:58] [SPEAKER_00]: while that's fair I also vote does worth 30 I just can't from that so yeah both can get a Bentley
[00:54:04] [SPEAKER_00]: K-tuck gets the number they both get a Mariners world series hmm I like that idea look at
[00:54:11] [SPEAKER_02]: us Austin we're working in your favor here you get to be part of a world series roster all you have
[00:54:18] [SPEAKER_00]: to do is give up your number to one of the best left hand abats and all baseball last question
[00:54:24] [SPEAKER_02]: this comes from I will fear I will fear no evil on Instagram the question is if you're a GM
[00:54:33] [SPEAKER_02]: sorry let me reframe this question if you're the Mariners GM what specific moves do you make this
[00:54:41] [SPEAKER_00]: all right I've been saving some energy for this one so here we go here's exactly what I would do
[00:54:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm trading for an extending bloody I'm signing Anthony Sonton Dare and with and all that I am walking
[00:54:53] [SPEAKER_00]: right up to the Mariners I am walking right up to the Mariners ownership calling them out for their
[00:54:59] [SPEAKER_00]: cheap and stingy mindset demanding that they start spending money stop lying to the people about how
[00:55:05] [SPEAKER_00]: money you really do or don't have stop acting like Mr. Krabs and start spending and if they say no
[00:55:11] [SPEAKER_00]: I am slamming my hands on the desk telling them if you refuse these demands I'm calling an emergency
[00:55:17] [SPEAKER_00]: press conference throwing every single one of you under the bus with the exact quote of this
[00:55:23] [SPEAKER_00]: nobody around the bush just straight backs I would say and I quote if I could spend more money
[00:55:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I would ownership won't let me and quote right there they have two options spend the money to get
[00:55:37] [SPEAKER_00]: these players okay if you're trading for bloody you're also extending them spend the money to get
[00:55:42] [SPEAKER_00]: these players or be called out and let the entire public know what you've really been doing all
[00:55:48] [SPEAKER_00]: along which everybody already knows but then it's confirmed okay well I have a lot of questions here
[00:55:56] [SPEAKER_02]: first oh do you make it down to the press conference before you get fired
[00:56:02] [SPEAKER_00]: you think I'm telling them what I'm gonna say in that press I wait actually one of my
[00:56:06] [SPEAKER_00]: saying I just admitted that I was gonna say what I'd say hmm all right I'd have a whistleblower
[00:56:13] [SPEAKER_00]: send text to everybody in the media saying there's a press conference that you're not going to want
[00:56:17] [SPEAKER_02]: to miss in 15 minutes and you better be there there is going to be a pass and tweet firing you before
[00:56:22] [SPEAKER_02]: you get down there breaking wow goldstein has been fired he word fired for his role of
[00:56:32] [SPEAKER_00]: general manager the Seattle Mariners good when they write in the papers cause of firing
[00:56:37] [SPEAKER_02]: cause of firing telling the truth sources tell ESPN that he cussed out ownership and called them
[00:56:44] [SPEAKER_02]: whoa yeah a lot of things well spend some money the question was what would I do if I was the
[00:56:53] [SPEAKER_00]: GM that right there is what I would do I I care about the city I care about the fans I care
[00:57:01] [SPEAKER_00]: about the team winning I care about the players and every single one of them deserves transparency
[00:57:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and buy it and if they will give it as a person in power for the time being until I get fired
[00:57:14] [SPEAKER_00]: two minutes later I'm letting everybody know why it's not happening you know how pissed off I be
[00:57:20] [SPEAKER_00]: as a GM and and I just had my hands tied behind my back by ownership I don't know how Jerry and
[00:57:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Justin do it I really don't how they've gone as many years as they've gone in this organization
[00:57:30] [SPEAKER_00]: and you know how badly they probably want to say it feel like it's like I mean they probably know
[00:57:35] [SPEAKER_00]: everybody can read the T. Leaves but they probably want to say it's so bad but they can't
[00:57:41] [SPEAKER_02]: you know it makes up for it these enormous paychecks that cash in your bank account every two weeks
[00:57:48] [SPEAKER_00]: no yeah I'm going to be honest I'm a man of the people paychecks
[00:57:54] [SPEAKER_00]: as I hit my mic paychecks winning a world series I'm a man of the people
[00:58:00] [SPEAKER_02]: well I think winning a world series is up there for them too
[00:58:04] [SPEAKER_02]: but the paychecks are pretty nice do you got to do to keep a job you know what makes you money
[00:58:10] [SPEAKER_02]: winning a world series you're not wrong you're not wrong there I will let you can you give
[00:58:15] [SPEAKER_02]: your realistic plan what you do as a GM not let let's I like your first idea let's now say
[00:58:22] [SPEAKER_02]: in a realistic sense this off season what would you do fine I will be more realistic
[00:58:31] [SPEAKER_00]: however that is what I that is what I'd actually do if I was the GM but fine also come
[00:58:37] [SPEAKER_00]: also come to your question and put out what is a more quote unquote reasonable off season I'll say
[00:58:43] [SPEAKER_00]: this and off season that an off season that is more likely for what a mariners off season would
[00:58:48] [SPEAKER_00]: look like if I was a GM that's what I'm doing anyway I would I would probably sign Christian Walker
[00:58:59] [SPEAKER_00]: because you need a first basement you really really need a first basement like there is an
[00:59:05] [SPEAKER_00]: opportunity where you could have Luke Rayleigh and Tyler Lockler put to next year but if you
[00:59:09] [SPEAKER_00]: have a chance to sign Christian Walker go sign Christian Walker because he like P would be great
[00:59:14] [SPEAKER_00]: too but he's probably gonna come in more money and a longer contract than Walker will so let's say
[00:59:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Walker and then I would say I mean I would love to go find one more in field right I'd love to
[00:59:28] [SPEAKER_00]: go find a third basement but I don't know how many third basement are out there after the
[00:59:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Matt Chapman extension other than Alex Breckman who there's no way he'll sign here so maybe
[00:59:38] [SPEAKER_00]: you trade for somebody maybe you can find somebody else in free agency but I'd say Christian
[00:59:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Walker is the big one and I I know I'm partly stealing your answer here but you got to you got
[00:59:48] [SPEAKER_00]: to shed some of the dead weight off this roster because there is dead weight and you cannot run
[00:59:54] [SPEAKER_00]: this roster back next year because we've seen all the problems it's caused okay my unrealistic
[01:00:01] [SPEAKER_02]: expectation of myself as Mariners General Manager this off season I would write a legally
[01:00:10] [SPEAKER_02]: binding declaration I would write into law at T-Mobile Park that Abraham Toro would be barred from
[01:00:19] [SPEAKER_02]: ever entering the Mariners Clubhouse ever again therefore making it impossible that he ever
[01:00:27] [SPEAKER_02]: suit up in a Seattle Mariners uniform ever again and that instantly would make it the greatest
[01:00:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Mariners off season of all time counterpoint one of these in an MVP race the Mariners have the
[01:00:49] [SPEAKER_02]: see you went like right past the factual state of the universe when you let that sentence out
[01:00:58] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I don't know if I heard you correct that just want to clarify you said Abraham Toro
[01:01:05] [SPEAKER_02]: in MVP consideration hypothetical world dog I'm asking a question was there ever what was
[01:01:15] [SPEAKER_02]: MVP that was deafaid before he won the MVP if I can change and you can change
[01:01:26] [SPEAKER_00]: everyone can change aka a Toro can change no he can't I don't know he's never allowed in the Mariners
[01:01:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Clubhouse ever again are we getting that plastered on the wall somewhere we getting a poster we
[01:01:41] [SPEAKER_02]: get in the quote yeah right outside the Mariners Clubhouse it's going to say say no to Abe
[01:01:47] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm painting it you know football coaches love their slogans well as general manager there's only
[01:01:53] [SPEAKER_02]: going to be one slogan painted it's going to be right there outside the Clubhouse welcome to the Seattle
[01:01:59] [SPEAKER_00]: Mariners Clubhouse unless your name is Abe Toro see ya all right now what is your realistic one
[01:02:07] [SPEAKER_02]: is you eat mechanic's money and you deafay I'm just as you said shed some of the dead weight on
[01:02:13] [SPEAKER_02]: this roster they can't carry this many outfielders and he looks like right now that he's going
[01:02:18] [SPEAKER_02]: to play the least amount sign Christian Walker to play first base and then use every last resource
[01:02:24] [SPEAKER_02]: possible to make sure Julio is ready to have a 100th percentile 20 25 season because as it stands
[01:02:31] [SPEAKER_02]: right now based on the money available to you there is going to be no bigger addition this off season
[01:02:38] [SPEAKER_02]: then go getting Julio from the state he's at offensively right now to a state that he can achieve
[01:02:44] [SPEAKER_02]: when he exceeds every expectation and he plays to his 100th percentile of talent.
[01:02:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I hope they find a way to do that again I said earlier in the podcast I just can't let my expectations
[01:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: get too high for him at this point in terms of what he'll do with the plate that being said
[01:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: people who's everybody's expectations out of water and goes nuclear next year great
[01:03:05] [SPEAKER_00]: because that is how this team can find a way to a world series especially with this pitching staff
[01:03:11] [SPEAKER_02]: now can assign one soldal you might as well have one soldal at home while that's that's
[01:03:16] [SPEAKER_02]: whatever improvements you can get of Julio Rodriguez is that is that or is that unfair or should
[01:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: say 20 tators at home well one soldo's an atrocious defender where Julio's elite but
[01:03:29] [SPEAKER_00]: in terms of the hitting sense I mean I think we know Julio's absolute peak he can get
[01:03:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I think Julio's absolute peak in terms of the talent he has yes he closer to one soldo than
[01:03:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Anthony Santander I think so I'm not saying he is one soldo because one soldo might be the best
[01:03:48] [SPEAKER_00]: pure hitter that will see in our generation there is a real world that could happen now that
[01:03:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Aaron judge guy is something to say about that too but I'm just saying there is a world where that
[01:03:57] [SPEAKER_00]: happens he's like he's certainly on pace to have a case but yeah like I think Julio's closer in
[01:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: terms of top-end talent what his absolute ceiling is to one soldo and Santander but he just hasn't
[01:04:09] [SPEAKER_00]: come close to that as a plate but yeah so it's only one soldo at home I guess it's possible
[01:04:17] [SPEAKER_02]: that's what they're gonna have to do it's literally we can't afford to go out to eat
[01:04:20] [SPEAKER_02]: we're gonna need to make something at home this off season and your best home cooking is that
[01:04:26] [SPEAKER_00]: dude we're a number 44 in center field yeah I agree you like the analogy oh it's good it was very good
[01:04:32] [SPEAKER_00]: that's a great way to pression yeah that's a great way to end the show perfect perfect transit
