Lyle and TJ give their final thoughts on the 2024 season as it concludes with a sweep of the A's (1:10) before dishing out on Jerry Dipoto's impromptu media session over the weekend and how it impacts action in the offseason (15:55).

[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Welcome to episode number 168 of the Marine Layer Podcast.
[00:00:04] [SPEAKER_04]: The Mariners' 2024 season has come to a close, and Lawni will give our parting thoughts as

[00:00:53] [SPEAKER_04]: And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Layer Podcast, part of the Just
[00:00:57] [SPEAKER_04]: Baseball Podcast Network, recording on Sunday evening, September 29th after the
[00:01:04] [SPEAKER_04]: Mariners' 162nd and final game of the 2024 season.
[00:01:11] [SPEAKER_04]: What's the first emotion that comes to mind now that we're done, Lyle?
[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Psy of relief.
[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Dude, I need a break.
[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_03]: I need a mental health break.
[00:01:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Like that's legitimately my first emotion that comes to mind.
[00:01:27] [SPEAKER_03]: I sent you this meme today or this gift today, and I'll stand right by it.
[00:01:31] [SPEAKER_03]: Andy Dufresne in Shawshank Redemption after he escapes the prison and has both his hands
[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_03]: in the air in the river looking to the sky, basically saying, I'm free.
[00:01:41] [SPEAKER_03]: That's how I feel.
[00:01:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I need a break.
[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, at least they won all three games that did not matter this weekend in great
[00:01:50] [SPEAKER_04]: fashion.
[00:01:51] [SPEAKER_04]: And we have now approached into territory where for the fifth time now in 11 seasons,
[00:01:57] [SPEAKER_04]: the Seattle Mariners have technically missed the playoffs by one game or close.
[00:02:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Tiebreaker is this one.
[00:02:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So it's technically two games this year, but it's only one game in the standings.
[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_04]: And it is so close because there's also only one game separating the two tiebreakers
[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_04]: between the Mariners and the Royals this year.
[00:02:19] [SPEAKER_04]: Doesn't that make you feel good?
[00:02:20] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, and here I have another fun stat for you about this Mariners' 2024 season.
[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_04]: The Mariners expected win loss this year is 54 percent.
[00:02:33] [SPEAKER_03]: One could only guess.
[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_03]: They could only guess.
[00:02:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, it's too bad the Mariners didn't have any games against the Royals that they
[00:02:40] [SPEAKER_03]: could have won but actually lost.
[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, every game they lost, they just simply just got way outplayed,
[00:02:45] [SPEAKER_03]: didn't favor them that day.
[00:02:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, what's that?
[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm actually hearing word they had an eight nothing lead in Kansas City and one of those
[00:02:52] [SPEAKER_03]: games then lost.
[00:02:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I must have forgotten about that.
[00:02:56] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, it almost it almost slipped my mind.
[00:02:59] [SPEAKER_03]: Did I put a social post out about it today?
[00:03:01] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe but still it must have slipped my mind.
[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_04]: And it almost didn't matter, Lyle, because on top of that,
[00:03:07] [SPEAKER_04]: that doesn't piss you off enough thinking about that part.
[00:03:10] [SPEAKER_04]: So there's only one game separating the divisional records for both the Royals
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_04]: and the Mariners.
[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_04]: The Royals, I believe were 33 and 19 and the Mariners were 32 and 20.
[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_04]: One game.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_04]: Do you think there was a game in the division this year?
[00:03:26] [SPEAKER_04]: The Mariners could have won this year.
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_04]: And then if they were tied in records, the Mariners then would have had the tiebreaker
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_04]: because then it would have been outside of the division record,
[00:03:36] [SPEAKER_04]: which the Mariners would have held that tiebreaker.
[00:03:39] [SPEAKER_04]: Are there any notable games against bad teams in the division this year, Lyle, that
[00:03:43] [SPEAKER_04]: come to mind?
[00:03:46] [SPEAKER_03]: Like the final nine games against, I don't know,
[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_03]: the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim where they went one and eight, no.
[00:03:55] [SPEAKER_04]: And which team swept the angels this week?
[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_04]: Struggling to remember which team did?
[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, would that be the Astros?
[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no, no.
[00:04:06] [SPEAKER_04]: This week.
[00:04:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh.
[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, the White Sox.
[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_04]: Eight of nine losses to that team.
[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's a lot out there.
[00:04:18] [SPEAKER_04]: In summary, the Mariners are where they are because they could not win games.
[00:04:23] [SPEAKER_04]: They probably should have won.
[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And now the season's over before October has even started yet again.
[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_04]: And again, we can bring up the stat five times in 11 seasons.
[00:04:31] [SPEAKER_04]: It's remarkable that it's possible for one singular franchise to achieve this,
[00:04:36] [SPEAKER_04]: but legitimately finishing a game out of the standing for the playoffs
[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_04]: five times in a decade.
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_03]: It's nearly 50%.
[00:04:45] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Like again, as bad as those angels games were, how you go one and eight against the angels is
[00:04:52] [SPEAKER_03]: unreal.
[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_03]: Like the fact you're not eight and one in those games against the angels or even five and four,
[00:04:58] [SPEAKER_03]: you're five and four in those games against the angels.
[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_03]: You're four and five in those games against the angels, right?
[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_03]: You'd win the division, right?
[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_03]: Or would it have to be five and four?
[00:05:07] [SPEAKER_04]: You'd miss out by game.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, so five and four.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_03]: So fine.
[00:05:09] [SPEAKER_03]: You go five and four in those games against the angels.
[00:05:11] [SPEAKER_03]: You win the division, but you needed one more win to get into the playoffs
[00:05:14] [SPEAKER_03]: and I cannot get away eight from eight nothing in Kansas City.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_03]: And you lost eight nothing.
[00:05:28] [SPEAKER_03]: That's the whole season.
[00:05:30] [SPEAKER_03]: Like again, you should have won way more games against the angels, but that's the whole
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_03]: season eight nothing in Kansas City.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_04]: And people wonder why Lyle and I send Joker videos back and forth so much.
[00:05:41] [SPEAKER_04]: That's why right there.
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_03]: Or a million Frank the Tank videos.
[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you realize we thought about bringing out paper bags today.
[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just realizing that now as we're recording.
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_04]: Disappointing, we don't actually have any paper bags available of
[00:05:57] [SPEAKER_04]: just how the results turned out.
[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_04]: If you want to put a smile on your face, dog,
[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_04]: as we've officially concluded this 2024 season,
[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_04]: does it put a smile on your face knowing the Mariners had an above
[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_04]: league average offense by WRC Plus?
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_03]: No.
[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Does it put a smile on your face?
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_04]: A laugh.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_04]: It's funny and we're going to need to probably remind some of our listeners that WRC Plus is
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_04]: park adjusted and the Mariners play in the worst hitters park in baseball.
[00:06:31] [SPEAKER_04]: So for them to get to league average offensively is a lower bar
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_04]: than almost every other team or sorry, not almost, then every other team.
[00:06:39] [SPEAKER_04]: They have to do less to reach the league average mark.
[00:06:41] [SPEAKER_04]: So if you look at all the slash lines, the run scored, etc., etc., all that stuff,
[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_04]: like the Mariners are clearly worse than all the teams around them offensively.
[00:06:50] [SPEAKER_04]: Well then based on their park, it's 102 or sorry, it was 103.
[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_04]: And you're sitting there thinking 12th best offense in baseball?
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_04]: No.
[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_04]: No way.
[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_04]: So this is where someone will come to us and like,
[00:07:06] [SPEAKER_04]: all right nerds, this is why WRC Plus is flawed.
[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_04]: And I'd be like, it's kind of hard to dispute because we're sitting here saying there's no way.
[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_03]: Like I still think it's the best player stat in baseball because like especially when you're
[00:07:21] [SPEAKER_03]: looking at offense and we've talked to Goldie about this and we've talked to Gary about this for
[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_03]: why it really kind of encapsulates who a player is.
[00:07:29] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, yeah, I'm starting to have some trust issues.
[00:07:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Like while we're in the trust tree here, I'm starting to have some trust issues with
[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_03]: Team WRC Plus.
[00:07:37] [SPEAKER_03]: When I see that last year the Mariners are sixth and this year they're 12th
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_03]: and watching what that offense did each of the last two years and seeing that, yeah,
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_03]: I'm having a problem like I'm having some real trust issues looking at those numbers.
[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_04]: And so it's like, all right, well we just need to go by run scored now.
[00:07:52] [SPEAKER_04]: The Mariners need to go away from WRC Plus.
[00:07:55] [SPEAKER_04]: Let's lead the league in runs.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_04]: That'd be great.
[00:08:00] [SPEAKER_04]: That was pretty good, doesn't it?
[00:08:02] [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: Do that.
[00:08:03] [SPEAKER_04]: So a hypothetical, Lyle, if a team finished the season 12th in WRC Plus and second in ERA,
[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_04]: where do you think they would finish?
[00:08:13] [SPEAKER_03]: You would hope 90 wins at least.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe 90-
[00:08:17] [SPEAKER_04]: A little bit of an expected win loss total was close to that.
[00:08:19] [SPEAKER_03]: Maybe 95 wins if you're the best rotation in baseball.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_04]: You'd think but no, 85 wins.
[00:08:27] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what that formula has gotten the Seattle Mariners this season.
[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_03]: Awesome.
[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_03]: And again, I'll say it again, if they had Brash and Santos all year this year,
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_03]: probably looks different too.
[00:08:40] [SPEAKER_03]: But you should have like, this is such a disappointment of a season to the point
[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_03]: where I think you can argue this is the most disappointing season the franchise has ever had.
[00:08:51] [SPEAKER_03]: When you look at where expectations were and the fact that the American League was so down
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_03]: all year, it was a bad year in the American League.
[00:08:59] [SPEAKER_03]: You had to do so little to get into the playoffs this year in the AL field.
[00:09:04] [SPEAKER_03]: They still missed.
[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_03]: With all that combined, expectations of the team, the roster that was on paper,
[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_03]: and the entire play of the American League in 2024 to miss this playoff field is as disappointing
[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_03]: a season is about you can draw up.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_04]: It's a pretty good way to articulate it.
[00:09:24] [SPEAKER_04]: And we'll get to some of Jerry's comments here in a little bit.
[00:09:27] [SPEAKER_04]: He does highlight, although not naming specifically in the article that Daniel
[00:09:31] [SPEAKER_04]: Kramer wrote that we will pick mostly from of some of those quotes that Jerry led when he held
[00:09:37] [SPEAKER_04]: his impromptu end of season press conference on Saturday.
[00:09:40] [SPEAKER_04]: But again, we'll get to that here in a little bit.
[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_04]: The main thing that sticks out and from what he said is he feels like this team over the last
[00:09:46] [SPEAKER_04]: five weeks showed what it was and that they still believe in this core.
[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_04]: So if like, what does this season look like?
[00:09:53] [SPEAKER_04]: What does this season look like with this core even with all the offensive struggle this
[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_04]: team has? If the two guys you mentioned, they have Matt Brashen and Gregory Santos healthy for
[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_04]: the whole season. How much different does it look like? Because one of the most underrated
[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_04]: weaknesses of this Mariners team was the middle of the bullpen. How are you going to get leverage
[00:10:14] [SPEAKER_04]: outs away from Andres Munoz? How are you going to find that? How are you going to shut down
[00:10:18] [SPEAKER_04]: the seventh and eighth innings this season? A big reason, a lot of those lost all those games
[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_04]: to the Angels Lyles because they blew leads in the seventh and eighth inning because they couldn't
[00:10:26] [SPEAKER_04]: hold it because they didn't have the guys at that spot to execute in those spots when they needed to.
[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_04]: If you have Matt Brashen, Gregory Santos, this core makes the playoffs and not as many people
[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_04]: are complaining. You and I aren't complaining. This isn't an end of season disappointment
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_04]: press conference. It's, oh, the Wildcard series starts on Tuesday, buckle up, Lyle.
[00:10:47] [SPEAKER_04]: That's what we're talking about instead. So it's disappointing, but then you can also say
[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_04]: Jerry kind of has a point if those injuries don't happen. Those aren't guys you can just
[00:10:57] [SPEAKER_04]: snap your fingers and replace. They tried that with Ryan Stannock and he gets traded at the deadline
[00:11:01] [SPEAKER_04]: because they didn't fit their philosophy. Right. They had other bullpen guys step up this year.
[00:11:08] [SPEAKER_03]: You just have to think about what the bullpen could have been with Brashen Santos.
[00:11:12] [SPEAKER_03]: If you had a full year of Colin Snyder the way you did where he pitched so well,
[00:11:15] [SPEAKER_03]: if you get Troy Taylor the final six to eight weeks of the season where
[00:11:18] [SPEAKER_03]: he turned into a leverage arm. So if you have all those guys lined up in the bullpen where if you have,
[00:11:24] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah, if you have Munoz, Brashen Santos, Snyder, Taylor and again like obviously Gabe's our guy,
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_03]: but I can't get over how good he looked in April and how everything kind of changed in May,
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_03]: which was not too long before the injury where he just wasn't the same the rest of the year
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_03]: because he missed a lot of time. They didn't really have like a leverage lefty for a lot
[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_03]: of this season. I mean, it's also a really good first half. I don't want to like take that away
[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_03]: from them, but seeing what Gabe did in April and then seeing what happened to him the rest of the
[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_03]: year with that injury, like that played a big factor too. Like, you know, not that you need
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_03]: a lefty in the pen, but he was so good and he looked so good in April compared to what he
[00:12:04] [SPEAKER_03]: did in 2023. They just didn't have that version of Gabe Spire this year.
[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_04]: So that would have been, you know, an enormously massive help,
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_04]: but then it also would have been great if you had a full season of what Julio did in the second
[00:12:14] [SPEAKER_04]: half. And we're not talking about the bullpen troubles as much because, you know, they score
[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_04]: 30 more runs this season. They're also probably in the playoffs if they just have that level of
[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_04]: production from combined. Like can you get 30 more runs out of Julio and JP Crawford for
[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_04]: this season? I would say there's a pretty easy scenario where you say yes, right?
[00:12:34] [SPEAKER_04]: And if you got those 30 runs out of those two, then again, the tone is completely different.
[00:12:40] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean, JP went from what was an all-star caliber, even though he didn't make the
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_03]: all-star game last year, all-star caliber, like top 10 to 12 bat in the American League type of
[00:12:52] [SPEAKER_03]: season last year to a career worst. So like, yeah, there's got to be some middle ground there you
[00:12:57] [SPEAKER_03]: can get to with him and Julio. Yeah. And you would hope that progresses back to the mean next
[00:13:03] [SPEAKER_03]: year. Yeah, yeah, you would hope so. And then like also while we're just going to wrap up
[00:13:09] [SPEAKER_03]: the season talk and especially while we're on the topic of the bullpen,
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_03]: we're going to look back on Jimmy Garcia's Mariners tenure with the, for anybody that
[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_03]: sees those Twitter videos that's like X players career highlights with this team and it's just
[00:13:23] [SPEAKER_03]: five seconds of the song hot by Gunna with a black screen, that's Jimmy Garcia's Mariners
[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_04]: tenure. It's the Tony Snell 28 minutes, no stats game. Well actually no, he had stats because he
[00:13:37] [SPEAKER_03]: blew leads in Detroit and they lost those games even though the offense did nothing in those games.
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_04]: Well, you could say his contributions to the team. Yeah, you could say that. Again,
[00:13:45] [SPEAKER_04]: good trade, terrible result, awful result. Yeah, so. But you're going to look back on
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_03]: his Mariners tenure again. It's going to be the five seconds just black screen on Twitter
[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_04]: with hot by Gunna playing. And then Jonathan Claude say is going to be
[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah, an all star. That would be something that would be that would really be something.
[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_04]: An all star he they play in game. It's like Game 162 next year where the Mariners are a
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_04]: game out of a playoff spot and the Blue Jays need to lose. Yeah, let's say the Blue Jays
[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_04]: need to lose and the team the Blue Jays are playing. Let's say they're playing the Orioles
[00:14:25] [SPEAKER_04]: like hits a ball over the wall, but Claude say who's playing somewhere in the outfield
[00:14:29] [SPEAKER_04]: robs the home run. It's up the no fly zone. Mariners missed the playoffs because they
[00:14:35] [SPEAKER_04]: traded for Jimmy Garcia to pitch. How many innings did it finish with six?
[00:14:41] [SPEAKER_03]: Something like that. Let's look it up. But not very many.
[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Jimmy Garcia with the Mariners here in 2024 made 10 appearances. He threw nine innings.
[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_03]: Well, best nine innings Mariners history. Yeah, I mean those blown leads to the Tigers did them wonders.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to just try not to repeat the same phrase over and over and over again. So
[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to have you read an ad so we can get to what Jerry says.
[00:15:10] [SPEAKER_03]: Fine. You don't want to say fine. I'll say it. Only one franchise. I'll say it.
[00:15:14] [SPEAKER_03]: Only one franchise. All right. Again, that's the slogan of this podcast.
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. All right. Before we get to all the Jerry comments, some positive. Our friends over at
[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_03]: Pegaches Pub 85 because that's an awesome place to hang out with baseball season for the Mariners
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_03]: being done playoffs aren't done for major league baseball. In fact, they're just starting.
[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_03]: You want to go watch some games over there? You want to go watch some football?
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_03]: You want to watch basketball, which is going to start here in a few weeks. Same with hockey.
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_03]: Head over there. It's an awesome time with your friends. There's darts.
[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_03]: There's pool. There's great food and awesome happy hour deals. Happy hours are two to six PM.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_03]: It's Monday through Friday drinks are three and four bucks. All that is all you need for a good time
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_03]: with your friends. So go head over there. It's Pegaches Pub 85 over in Kirkland.
[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_04]: I would like to give the Mariners a lot of credit for cooking this up. I wouldn't have even thought
[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_04]: this is how Jerry would have done it this season. So Ryan Davis put a tweet out sort of walking through
[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_04]: his known history of the end of season press conference. He noted Mariners don't always
[00:16:51] [SPEAKER_04]: do a formal press conference at the end of the year. Sometimes they'll make it up. It depends
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_04]: on when they get eliminated for the Mariners. The last three years they've either made the
[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_04]: playoffs or they've been eliminated on the last series of the season. Therefore, they wait
[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_04]: until the week after to do a press conference this year. They're eliminated before the final
[00:17:07] [SPEAKER_04]: series so they could do this. But the fact they did it without telling anybody and it was
[00:17:15] [SPEAKER_04]: literally just who showed up to the park on Saturday got to ask Jerry questions. I feel like is
[00:17:20] [SPEAKER_04]: really the funniest part of all this. They didn't... I'm going to give them again a lot of credit.
[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_04]: So like first of all, it was probably at least only half of what would have been at an
[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_04]: announced press conference right? About half? Maybe more, maybe less than that. Maybe a third
[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_03]: depending on who shows up? I'd say it was about half. It's all the usual media people that were
[00:17:43] [SPEAKER_03]: there for it but most of those media people don't usually have cameras take a bunch of video.
[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_03]: I mean you know maybe Root took some video but that's obviously going to be skewed what they
[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_03]: show and don't show. There was none of the TV crews there or anything so yeah.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_04]: And so if Jerry said something stupid it's not going to get tweeted all over the place.
[00:18:04] [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah well in that regard you can blame me. So full disclosure like I was there this weekend,
[00:18:10] [SPEAKER_03]: I was there Saturday. Number one, TJ is not making that up. Nobody knew this thing was happening.
[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_03]: Like you ask around after that presser it's like was this set up? Did you know this was
[00:18:20] [SPEAKER_03]: going to happen? No. Nobody knew it was happening. So it was very very impromptu as Adam
[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_03]: Jude tweeted out. Impromptu media session. Number two, if you're mad there's no video
[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_03]: you can blame me. Sorry guys I didn't stand in that press conference and I wasn't taking videos. Why?
[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_03]: Because well first and foremost the minor leakers were there that day to get their awards and
[00:18:42] [SPEAKER_03]: there's a lot of minor league guys that we're pretty friendly with and we wanted to catch up
[00:18:46] [SPEAKER_03]: with it. We don't get to see all that often like we were talking to Brandon Garcia for a while
[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_03]: on Saturday which I know we've kind of hinted at it but if you want another hint he is
[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_03]: most likely going to be an upcoming podcast guest at some point in the next few weeks so if you
[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_03]: want to hear from a guy that very well could throw big league innings this next year and was
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_03]: the Mariners minor league pitcher of the year this year, probably hear him on here soon enough.
[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_03]: We're talking to him we're talking to Michael Morales we were talking to some of the other
[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_03]: guys we've gotten to know a little bit obviously like Colt, Felneen, Laz, Arroyo who we talked
[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_03]: to a few weeks ago whatever at Michael Arroyo. So yeah like I'm going to be honest I was
[00:19:18] [SPEAKER_03]: more interested to do that because like I was at that presser last year and I didn't walk away from
[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_03]: it all that inspired and I didn't feel like I was going to walk away from this presser all that
[00:19:29] [SPEAKER_03]: inspired. I was like you know what like I'd rather sit and just kind of chop it up and
[00:19:34] [SPEAKER_03]: catch up with a bunch of the minor league guys so I did that but if you are out there and
[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_03]: you're mad that there was not video tweeted out I guess in that sense it is my fault because
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_03]: usually in the regular media sessions on a regular basis I'm usually the only one that
[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_03]: tweets out clips from it. The other writers don't really have much of a need to tweet stuff out
[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_03]: like videos so yeah blame me if you're mad. And we can't confirm for certain that Jerry
[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_04]: didn't say anything that has the potential to go viral. I feel like it would have at this point but
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_04]: there nobody mentioned anything because there's no video up there's no there's going to be no
[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_04]: archive of it. Fans can't go back and listen to what Jerry DePoto said it's all just taken
[00:20:13] [SPEAKER_04]: with the words of all the writers that wrote something about it so what we have to go off of
[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_04]: is what was written and I'm sure that's how Jerry wants it especially from some of the mess ups they
[00:20:26] [SPEAKER_04]: have had in this department in the future. So which quote should we start with, Wile?
[00:20:32] [SPEAKER_04]: You pick you've got them all lined up for us. Okay and I will say a disclaimer here if
[00:20:38] [SPEAKER_04]: you're expecting Jerry to say something groundbreaking and new that he's never said before
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_04]: unfortunately you've come to the wrong place. I feel like we have a pretty good idea whenever
[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_04]: Jerry DePoto does a media session what kind of language comes out of his mouth and how
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_04]: he talks about his baseball team right? I would say it's pretty consistent. Well when he says
[00:21:00] [SPEAKER_03]: new things they seem to go viral and anybody ever heard 54% before last year? Which by the way
[00:21:08] [SPEAKER_03]: fans were really in a great mood this weekend. I got to tell you I'm walking around the ballpark
[00:21:12] [SPEAKER_03]: and in the span of 24 hours I see multiple 54% jerseys and I saw multiple shirts that said
[00:21:18] [SPEAKER_03]: sell but not ace fans wearing sell jerseys, Mariners fans wearing sell sell shirts so
[00:21:24] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah people are in a great mood this weekend I got to tell you. Okay let's start off with
[00:21:29] [SPEAKER_04]: the banger of a quote and this is very similar to what he said about his team last year when
[00:21:33] [SPEAKER_04]: they missed the playoffs. Quote these last five weeks have shown we are not far off.
[00:21:42] [SPEAKER_03]: Like by a technicality he's right I guess because if they play the way they played
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_03]: the last five weeks for an entirety of a season then yes you make the playoffs but
[00:21:54] [SPEAKER_03]: what about the first five months of the season? Like does that count for anything?
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_04]: They didn't look like that then. You could do that for any stretch of the season you
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_04]: could say from mid-April to mid-June we looked like a playoff team. Like yeah they did they had a
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_04]: 10 game lead in first they were a playoff team. Like you're right by a technicality sense they
[00:22:11] [SPEAKER_04]: won 61% of their games in the last five weeks since Dan Wilson took over. The problem is
[00:22:16] [SPEAKER_04]: you can't sell that that's going to happen all season long you can always claim small
[00:22:21] [SPEAKER_04]: samples can extrapolate for a full season but you know that's not really a thing and they
[00:22:27] [SPEAKER_04]: faced like let's look at the clear playoff teams they faced in this stretch Lyle they lost
[00:22:32] [SPEAKER_04]: 203 to the Yankees they split with the Padres and then they won 203 against the Astros so it's like a wash
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_04]: they're about 500. It's not like it was not enough to sit there and say yeah yeah like like this is
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_04]: it this is a playoff team I think the bigger issue is and I think Jerry has every right to be
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_04]: confident in his team is that people don't want to hear you say that you were right
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_04]: in how this roster was put together based on the result of the season because that's essentially what
[00:23:04] [SPEAKER_04]: he's saying in that. He said I think the idea of this roster was correct even though they missed the
[00:23:11] [SPEAKER_03]: playoffs and again while you imagine Julio's gonna be well actually I mean I have my own
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_03]: doubts about it while the organization believes Julio's going to be more consistent next year
[00:23:22] [SPEAKER_03]: even if that happens and even if JP gets back to his career norm next year
[00:23:27] [SPEAKER_03]: you're still banking on other things to happen all over again I'm not saying they can't happen
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_03]: but as Victor Robles guaranteed to carry this over we hope so but it's not a guarantee is Luke
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_03]: Rayleigh gonna put up another season like this again next year you hope it's no guarantee
[00:23:41] [SPEAKER_03]: those like those two guys are not proven enough big leaguers to bank in on the fact that they
[00:23:47] [SPEAKER_03]: should have those type of seasons repeated again next year especially when JP's a proven big
[00:23:51] [SPEAKER_03]: leager everybody figured he took this real step forward last year and then it came falling back
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_04]: to earth in 2024 and that's not even accounting for pitching regression which will almost certainly
[00:24:02] [SPEAKER_04]: happen or heaven forbid injuries in the rotation right the other thing about this quote is I say
[00:24:09] [SPEAKER_04]: far off from what because you know what they're far off from being a world series team
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_04]: I'd say they're pretty far off from being that playoff team
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_04]: sure not that far off a world series team which everyone wants to see yeah they're far off from that
[00:24:26] [SPEAKER_03]: their vision of being not that far off is not that far off from sneaking into the playoffs and
[00:24:31] [SPEAKER_03]: just hoping your rotation carries you that's what their their vision of not far off is they like
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_03]: they have never built a contender a true like real real contender in our lifetimes even when
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_03]: they made it in 22 like that team is the closest thing you could say in our lifetimes to being a
[00:24:49] [SPEAKER_04]: real contender but that team had plenty of flaws so like that's that's really where the beef I have
[00:24:57] [SPEAKER_04]: with that statement but it ultimately just lines up with everything else Jerry DePoto says this is
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_04]: the same guy who said last year was a success of a year like this is he's going to beam
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_04]: positivity about his franchise and if he's going to continue to lead them going forward
[00:25:11] [SPEAKER_04]: he is going to speak up the job he has done that's what he's going to do next quote
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_04]: not really a quote just a statement they're not trading from the rotation he says plan z great
[00:25:25] [SPEAKER_03]: are you going to add offense otherwise I hope I don't I don't want to trade one of those
[00:25:31] [SPEAKER_03]: pitchers I want that rotation intact in 2025 because that gives you the best chance to win
[00:25:35] [SPEAKER_03]: but how are you going to improve this offense that is my question if it's not going to be
[00:25:41] [SPEAKER_03]: trading how are you going to do it and just running back this roster ain't going to fly with just about
[00:25:48] [SPEAKER_04]: anybody and that's what he made it sound like he made it sound like a majority of this roster will
[00:25:53] [SPEAKER_04]: be back for next season he even went you know specifics he said the outfield is going to be the
[00:25:57] [SPEAKER_04]: same which I think is fine I think these are about as good of an outfield unless you sign toady
[00:26:02] [SPEAKER_04]: tears of course but we have our doubts they're going to do that that this is about as good as
[00:26:07] [SPEAKER_04]: it would get in the outfield for next season in randy julio and victor robles okay that's fine
[00:26:14] [SPEAKER_04]: did mention they need to like shuffle around the infield a little bit and they need to add
[00:26:19] [SPEAKER_04]: pieces on the infield that's fine he didn't rule out trading minor league pitchers the
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_04]: mariners have plenty of those we love our guys down in the minor leagues but if there's
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_04]: something the mariners have a copious amount of right now while it is near major league starters
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_04]: so if you're not going to trade the big league starters in your rotation you can trade the near
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_04]: big league starters in triple a and a double a and it's some teams while you might not get as much
[00:26:46] [SPEAKER_04]: back you could trade two of them instead of trading one yeah I mean it is a possibility but
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_03]: how much are those guys going to get you back like are those getting you back real bats I don't
[00:26:58] [SPEAKER_04]: know they're not going to get you back as much as if you were to trade one of your starters in
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_04]: your rotation that's for sure that's exactly that part stinks and again like how many more projects
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_03]: can you take on at this point you're like they're in a window to contend they need real proven guys
[00:27:18] [SPEAKER_04]: but they are probably going to take on a project we just need to accept that that's that's how
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_04]: it's going to be next year like so let's get to the infield part so JP Crawford's gonna be the
[00:27:28] [SPEAKER_04]: shortstop next year that's expected they want to see root Luke Rayleigh play more at first base
[00:27:34] [SPEAKER_03]: that like okay can I just interject on that I'm not saying I'm not saying Luke Rayleigh doesn't
[00:27:41] [SPEAKER_03]: deserve as a bat because he does but penciling him in there I think that's a mistake because so
[00:27:47] [SPEAKER_03]: Churchill tweeted this today and I totally agree with them this is how the Mariners should
[00:27:51] [SPEAKER_03]: operate their outfield in DH bot next year Robles is almost always in right Julio is
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_03]: almost always in center what you do is you have Randy and Rayleigh split time between ones in left
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_03]: field most games ones at DH where usually one like the two of them are split between those two positions
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_03]: or if a lefties on the mound in a game where you don't want Rayleigh hitting against a lefty
[00:28:13] [SPEAKER_03]: Randy's and left Garver DH is in that role because we know the one thing he did this year
[00:28:17] [SPEAKER_03]: is hit lefties and then that totally frees up first base to go make a real acquisition for
[00:28:23] [SPEAKER_03]: a proven first baseman that's what they should do and by the way Luke Rayleigh looked extremely
[00:28:27] [SPEAKER_03]: uncomfortable at times playing first base this year maybe they think an offseason to work would
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_03]: have him more comfortable but just leave them in the outfield and at DH and go get a real
[00:28:38] [SPEAKER_03]: first baseman thank you for coming to my TED talk but that would require spending money
[00:28:43] [SPEAKER_04]: which they said they're gonna do but we'll get to that in a second let's not get ahead of
[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_04]: ourselves so right now he says Rayleigh is going to spend some time at first base which
[00:28:50] [SPEAKER_04]: sounds like they are going to platoon first base at least right now here on september 29th
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_04]: using that verbiage that's what it sounds like so now they need an upgrade at second base and they
[00:29:02] [SPEAKER_04]: need an upgrade at third base what exactly that looks like i'm not entirely sure so that means
[00:29:09] [SPEAKER_03]: really quickly one more thing at first base that means if it's going to be Rayleigh
[00:29:12] [SPEAKER_03]: then your platoon is either you hope Tyler Locklear has an awesome offseason a great spring
[00:29:18] [SPEAKER_03]: training and he makes the roster at a camp to face the lefties or you bring back Justin Turner
[00:29:24] [SPEAKER_03]: who says he wants to play another year and he platoons over at first base and he said he'd love
[00:29:28] [SPEAKER_04]: to come back to seattle mm-hmm and i saw this point on twitter today which is the mariners
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_04]: have let too many clubhouse guys go and it has not worked out positively for the roster at all
[00:29:43] [SPEAKER_04]: Santana Gino and now Justin Turner will do guys all say they like so i would say if there's a clear
[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_04]: option at first be it will clear is the wrong word i would say if there's a favorite for a platoon
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_04]: option at first base just in turner sounds like it won't be that expensive he's making like 19
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_04]: million dollars this year but he's not making 19 million dollars to be a platoon right-handed
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_04]: hitting first basement next year but based on how we imagine the mariners would spend
[00:30:09] [SPEAKER_04]: seems like an easy way out if they're putting Rayleigh at first base they could reevaluate
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_04]: some time in the soft season but as of right now that's how it sounds so second base and third base
[00:30:19] [SPEAKER_04]: that leaves those options open payroll isle it's going to go up mm-hmm
[00:30:28] [SPEAKER_03]: yeah uh do you want to read i can hear the excitement beaming out of your
[00:30:31] [SPEAKER_03]: i was gonna say do you have the quota or is it just payrolls going up
[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_04]: mariners payroll was roughly 145 million dollars depoto confirms that the number will increase next
[00:30:42] [SPEAKER_04]: year but also estimated a bulk of the upside will be via in-house raises many of them through
[00:30:48] [SPEAKER_03]: arbitration however if you if you read what divas tweeted out he said they'll also be looking
[00:30:58] [SPEAKER_03]: outside the organization and he said that they're going to be looking to add you know
[00:31:06] [SPEAKER_03]: on the infield and you know when i hear that paired with payroll is going to go significantly up
[00:31:11] [SPEAKER_03]: and that they have the resources oh what's this i'm actually getting a call from uh baltimore
[00:31:16] [SPEAKER_03]: maryland yeah i am i'm getting a call from baltimore maryland it's the raven's sonny
[00:31:20] [SPEAKER_03]: night football crew and the ever so loyal ravens fans who must have just gotten word of this
[00:31:26] [SPEAKER_03]: jerry depoto quote in this presser because they're reacting pretty passionately to it can you
[00:31:30] [SPEAKER_03]: believe it he's begging the official to come over and talk to him and instead he got a flag
[00:31:39] [SPEAKER_01]: you see what i'm trying to call time out it's the loudest manure chance i've ever heard
[00:31:47] [SPEAKER_03]: thank you alan christ and thank you ravens fans for having our back yeah when i see christian
[00:31:53] [SPEAKER_04]: walker ravens fans would be sticking up for the seattle mariners i mean
[00:31:57] [SPEAKER_03]: who hats off shout out the bank shout out the bank in baltimore yeah when i see christian walker
[00:32:04] [SPEAKER_03]: physically run out to first base on opening day i'll believe it what on earth have they given us
[00:32:09] [SPEAKER_03]: reason to believe that they are going to go out and acquire true impact free agent hitters like
[00:32:16] [SPEAKER_03]: let's let's go through it again but but here's the thing he never said that he just said the payroll
[00:32:21] [SPEAKER_04]: is going to go up and he said they will spend outside but they said that last year too and payroll
[00:32:26] [SPEAKER_03]: went up all of five million dollars like technically it's true yeah because if you look at what they're
[00:32:33] [SPEAKER_03]: going to have to do in arbitration cal's going to get a ton for all the games he caught this here
[00:32:38] [SPEAKER_03]: in the season he had logan's going to get around eight george is going to get about five randy's
[00:32:43] [SPEAKER_03]: going to go from eight to twelve julio's contract goes from like 12 to 20 or something like that
[00:32:48] [SPEAKER_03]: who am i forgetting oh that's everybody those are those are the main guys that are going to
[00:32:52] [SPEAKER_03]: going to get big money in arbitration when you factor all that stuff in yeah payroll is going
[00:32:57] [SPEAKER_03]: to go up so sure payroll is going to go up congratulations like do they want us to clap it
[00:33:04] [SPEAKER_03]: up for the fact that they're not going to trade randy arosa rena like diva had potentially
[00:33:08] [SPEAKER_03]: thrown out us three months after trading for him no like like nobody's going to give you a
[00:33:15] [SPEAKER_03]: round of applause for not trading a guy you just traded for when your offense isn't good enough
[00:33:19] [SPEAKER_03]: you need to go add more impact from outside the organization to add to this core you already
[00:33:24] [SPEAKER_03]: have and just paying guys in arbitration ain't it in labeling this continuing to label this as
[00:33:32] [SPEAKER_04]: a contention window means you don't just get to bulk at when the money increases because
[00:33:37] [SPEAKER_04]: this is what you expect you need to you know hedge against it on on what happens when all
[00:33:43] [SPEAKER_04]: of your players who you anticipate will become good players get more expensive
[00:33:47] [SPEAKER_04]: like that's what happens happened last year and it's going to happen this year as well
[00:33:51] [SPEAKER_04]: like they saw what happened last year when they knew some of this was coming and they
[00:33:58] [SPEAKER_04]: still tried to add some money and add players it didn't work out okay so how are you going to
[00:34:02] [SPEAKER_04]: change that for this next year where you do have to win winning is a non-negotiable
[00:34:07] [SPEAKER_04]: there's one other thing you mentioned that uh that was tweeted out that root sports won't be
[00:34:13] [SPEAKER_04]: as big of an impact on on the spending cycle this offseason
[00:34:19] [SPEAKER_03]: I guess and you mentioned this before we hit record but maybe all that means is
[00:34:25] [SPEAKER_03]: they're not going to be surprised by it this year they just know it is what it is at this
[00:34:29] [SPEAKER_03]: point rather than last year when everybody was surprised by it i'm gonna yeah i'm gonna say
[00:34:33] [SPEAKER_04]: it's just surprise he knows the limitations that that network would bring them this off
[00:34:39] [SPEAKER_04]: season it's not going to be a surprise on nhl opening week when xfinity pulls root sports
[00:34:45] [SPEAKER_04]: from its normal tier and puts it in its top tier that's not going to be just a gotcha this offseason
[00:34:52] [SPEAKER_04]: no they very well know where root sports is this offseason and can plan accordingly around it
[00:34:57] [SPEAKER_04]: as opposed to you know jerry i don't think uh thinking that that rsn money would be going away
[00:35:05] [SPEAKER_04]: last offseason i don't think that's the impression i think we got that
[00:35:10] [SPEAKER_04]: stuff like that caught them off guard and there's i can't imagine there's much to
[00:35:16] [SPEAKER_04]: else to catch them off guard rsn wise this offseason that's how i think about that not that oh
[00:35:22] [SPEAKER_04]: root sports had a banger year there's going to be a lot more money to spend
[00:35:26] [SPEAKER_04]: no no people start did the cable have a resurgence this year i don't think so
[00:35:33] [SPEAKER_03]: so divas just quote on all this by the way not the root thing but just one more thing about
[00:35:37] [SPEAKER_03]: the payroll thing as he said depoto doesn't believe team will have to create payroll flexibility
[00:35:41] [SPEAKER_03]: he acknowledged that the payroll will go up significantly within house players i think that
[00:35:45] [SPEAKER_03]: means arbitration but then also says but also said it will go up beyond those expected raises
[00:35:51] [SPEAKER_03]: so yeah to your point tj after all the arbitration things if they bring in one more player that
[00:35:58] [SPEAKER_03]: costs almost nothing to be some utility guy platoon guy whatever yes then by the definition of
[00:36:04] [SPEAKER_03]: the statement payroll will have gone up it will not be inspiring but it will have gone up so see
[00:36:13] [SPEAKER_04]: what i see what i mean when it's like jerry essentially just says the same thing every
[00:36:16] [SPEAKER_04]: year like we could just parse it back to pass things he said about all this and things that
[00:36:21] [SPEAKER_04]: have happened in the past that will probably happen again this offseason yeah like we'll
[00:36:25] [SPEAKER_03]: tell you what we think people you want to ask us i've said this for weeks now and i still believe
[00:36:30] [SPEAKER_03]: it i think they're doing absolutely nothing this winter sure they will pay their guys in arbitration
[00:36:34] [SPEAKER_03]: they're not going to trade anybody away again i'm not giving them a round of applause for that
[00:36:39] [SPEAKER_03]: but if you were talking about going outside the organization and getting true impact for
[00:36:43] [SPEAKER_03]: this roster i think they're doing absolutely nothing i hope i'm wrong i really hope i'm
[00:36:47] [SPEAKER_03]: wrong but i'm i'm pretty confident and i wish i wasn't i am pretty confident on the idea
[00:36:54] [SPEAKER_03]: that they are doing nothing come this winter in free agency to improve the roster from outside
[00:36:59] [SPEAKER_03]: the organization from where it already was they prove me wrong great i'm sold that nothing's
[00:37:04] [SPEAKER_04]: happening this this winter let's get to the last thing he said and this should come out of shock
[00:37:09] [SPEAKER_04]: to no one that they're going to try and refine their hitting approach and find something that
[00:37:14] [SPEAKER_03]: six excuse me uh-oh tj is already sick of no mariner's baseball he said he was ready
[00:37:22] [SPEAKER_04]: to be done and now he's having withdrawals no we started talking about the offense and i started
[00:37:26] [SPEAKER_04]: losing it okay yeah again it's just hard to watch so so jerry says they need to refine their
[00:37:34] [SPEAKER_04]: messaging on hitting at t mobile park great it sounds like edgar had a positive impact on that
[00:37:41] [SPEAKER_04]: when they brought him in for the final five weeks of the season jerry made it an emphasis
[00:37:46] [SPEAKER_04]: that they're going to be creative to try and retain edgar martinez for next year now he i doubt
[00:37:54] [SPEAKER_04]: he's going to be the full-time hitting coach i think one of the things that is mentioned often
[00:37:59] [SPEAKER_04]: that he's not going to want to travel around everywhere he's not going to go on the 162 game
[00:38:05] [SPEAKER_04]: grind of the full season but jerry says on the record you know he's a very important part of
[00:38:12] [SPEAKER_04]: this offense's turnaround and we want to have him available as much as possible so they're going to
[00:38:17] [SPEAKER_04]: get creative with him but they're also just going to find a way to message hitting at t mobile park
[00:38:23] [SPEAKER_04]: better which i think is great because if you think of how they approached it this season
[00:38:27] [SPEAKER_03]: it literally could not have been any worse yeah so maybe in that scenario edgar is there for
[00:38:34] [SPEAKER_03]: all the home games but they'll hire another hitting coach to be there all the time and he'll
[00:38:38] [SPEAKER_03]: travel on the road and he'll help relay the same message that the group organizationally has
[00:38:42] [SPEAKER_03]: and that edgar also agrees with and that's who's implementing it on the road maybe it'll look
[00:38:46] [SPEAKER_03]: something like that so like here's an example right each year was not on the coaching staff
[00:38:51] [SPEAKER_03]: but each year was at almost all the home games you know you see him out there with the players
[00:38:54] [SPEAKER_03]: and he's out there throwing and he's out there running and doing all this stuff
[00:38:57] [SPEAKER_03]: maybe it'll look something like that it's just edgar has more of a defined role
[00:39:01] [SPEAKER_03]: where he's the hitting coach and is it all the home games but just won't travel on the
[00:39:04] [SPEAKER_03]: road maybe he would travel to like one or two road series period if they think there's a series
[00:39:10] [SPEAKER_03]: they really need his help with something or if they're in a if they're in a rut and they feel
[00:39:14] [SPEAKER_03]: like he can help them get out of something on the road or maybe you know if they made the
[00:39:17] [SPEAKER_03]: playoffs then fine he traveled for the playoffs but mostly he's just at home maybe it would
[00:39:21] [SPEAKER_04]: look something like that that's what i think that sounds right that sounds right and i think
[00:39:27] [SPEAKER_04]: it's the right decision for the Mariners because the numbers are really undeniable
[00:39:30] [SPEAKER_04]: we can trash on a stance on batting average home runs and rbi's all we want but the results speak
[00:39:36] [SPEAKER_04]: pretty clearly lile of what he's done they've been the third best offense in baseball since he's taken
[00:39:40] [SPEAKER_04]: over by wrc plus that's not insignificant i think that is that's a real number that they might not
[00:39:48] [SPEAKER_04]: be able to maintain third best all season but an impactful offense that can score runs consistently
[00:39:53] [SPEAKER_04]: for good pitching staff yeah i think i think edgar can do that and there adam jude wrote a
[00:40:02] [SPEAKER_04]: really good piece earlier this week sort of detailing the differences of how edgar approached
[00:40:07] [SPEAKER_04]: hitting versus how brand brown did and just of how it resonates with the players i recommend
[00:40:12] [SPEAKER_04]: go reading that piece by the way so you get a little bit more insight into what i'm talking about
[00:40:15] [SPEAKER_04]: but just the connection he was able to have with some of these players especially julio
[00:40:22] [SPEAKER_04]: this season and showing what kind of impact that can make we're getting the best out of julio
[00:40:28] [SPEAKER_04]: rodriguez is in the best interest of this offense's success so if that's edgar's job to do and he can
[00:40:34] [SPEAKER_04]: do that better than anybody then i think it's well worth getting creative look if the players
[00:40:40] [SPEAKER_03]: are bought into his messaging and they feel like he helped that's the most important thing so yeah
[00:40:43] [SPEAKER_03]: keep him around so sure obviously the brand brown thing didn't work so stick with what worked
[00:40:50] [SPEAKER_04]: even if we say batting average is done yeah so that's about all jerry's closest was there anything
[00:40:58] [SPEAKER_03]: else he said that you wanted to touch on i think we hit on all the big points did i guess i wouldn't
[00:41:04] [SPEAKER_03]: know i i didn't stand in the press conference for the half hour but did i was i was gonna ask
[00:41:09] [SPEAKER_03]: did anybody ask about the batter's eye specifically when they asked about when they talked about
[00:41:13] [SPEAKER_04]: offensive like change i don't think anyone mentioned anything about it i didn't see a tweet
[00:41:22] [SPEAKER_03]: well that's too bad i would have been interested but well batter's eye didn't really hurt him the
[00:41:27] [SPEAKER_03]: last five weeks of the season yeah it's true still would have been curious but who knows but then
[00:41:34] [SPEAKER_04]: again jerry can't excavate the batter's eye i think that might be above them that's fair
[00:41:40] [SPEAKER_04]: but he can have a say yeah well i'm i'm sure he can he probably go ask edgar what he thinks
[00:41:46] [SPEAKER_04]: is this the problem and you know what edgar probably said no just need to hit the ball
[00:41:54] [SPEAKER_03]: does that wrap up our end of season pod or is there anything else we need to get to
[00:41:58] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah i mean this this pod ending is just like the season ending it just falls flat just
[00:42:03] [SPEAKER_03]: like that well buckle up people get some rest reset recharge i certainly know the two of us
[00:42:13] [SPEAKER_03]: needed although we'll keep podcasting obviously on our normal schedule but enjoy the playoffs
[00:42:20] [SPEAKER_03]: while other teams are playing in it not name the mariners because i think this offseason is
[00:42:24] [SPEAKER_03]: going to send us through a just spin cycle again so get your get your rest in before we
[00:42:30] [SPEAKER_04]: get it before we all get put through the ringer it's good it's a good idea i am hoping it
[00:42:37] [SPEAKER_04]: is an entertaining offseason but not for the reasons it was last year i would really like
[00:42:41] [SPEAKER_04]: to get proven wrong from some of the messaging we've come to understand of what could happen
[00:42:46] [SPEAKER_04]: i would like the opposite of that i would like the mariners to find a way this offseason
[00:42:51] [SPEAKER_04]: to put a good product on the field next season with a lot of their core players and go make the
[00:42:57] [SPEAKER_04]: damn playoffs no more no more excuses there there are no more excuses for next season
[00:43:05] [SPEAKER_04]: we said that last offseason and someone lost their job because of it same thing applies now
[00:43:11] [SPEAKER_04]: yeah actually three people lost their job because of it yeah well one of the one of the head figures
[00:43:17] [SPEAKER_03]: lost their job right exactly again i'm sorry i know we we try to be the positive podcast but if
[00:43:23] [SPEAKER_03]: you want to know what we really think i think they're making zero significant additions this
[00:43:27] [SPEAKER_03]: winter i wish that wasn't true that is what i believe and i very much hope we are proven
[00:43:32] [SPEAKER_03]: wrong and the organization goes out improves everybody wrong so we're going to find out
[00:43:38] [SPEAKER_03]: in the meantime look well sucks the mariners aren't in it the mlb playoffs are still very fun
[00:43:42] [SPEAKER_03]: regardless so we can all watch those we're going to keep podcasting on our normal schedule so our
[00:43:47] [SPEAKER_03]: next episode now since we put this one out monday will be friday and now we'll be back on our
[00:43:51] [SPEAKER_03]: totally normal schedule with wednesdays and fridays so we'll be recapping the year we'll
[00:43:56] [SPEAKER_03]: be giving out some position grades we'll be trying to think of some fun episodes we can
[00:43:59] [SPEAKER_03]: do too to kind of make things lighthearted and then when the offseason gets going we'll all
[00:44:04] [SPEAKER_03]: be going right with it so obviously the season ends but we're not done doing stuff we're not
[00:44:09] [SPEAKER_03]: done making content we're not done podcasting so keep sticking around because we'll be talking
