00:10 --> 00:12 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll react to the Mariners pick at number three.
00:12 --> 00:15 [SPEAKER_01]: They strike gold in LSU left hander Kate Anderson.
00:15 --> 00:16 [SPEAKER_01]: We're struggling to believe it.
00:17 --> 00:18 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll break down the pick and the two others.
00:18 --> 00:20 [SPEAKER_01]: The Mariners have made so far on day one.
00:21 --> 00:28 [SPEAKER_02]: get fired up, but before you do that, make sure you're downloading these episodes if you're listening, rate and review, go like, comment, subscribe on YouTube.

00:47 --> 00:52 [SPEAKER_02]: Right after the Astros game, we can't wait until over at the Hall on Oxygen and also all that's over at our website.

00:57 --> 00:58 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's get a rolling.
01:11 --> 01:39 [SPEAKER_01]: And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Lair podcast part of the just baseball podcast network recording on Sunday evening July, thirteenth from Atlanta Georgia first time we've ever been here and what a treat it has been to be here because the this I think the angels gave us a present today, while I think the angels sat in their draft room and decided we're going to make the Marine Lair podcast on their first ever trip down to Georgia very happy.
01:40 --> 01:44 [SPEAKER_02]: You know how teams do Christmas and July, the nights at the ballpark?
01:44 --> 01:45 [SPEAKER_02]: The angels do that.
01:45 --> 01:48 [SPEAKER_02]: So this is my immediate proposal.
01:48 --> 01:55 [SPEAKER_02]: The Mariners need to hold a Christmas and July this month and all they do for it is deck out team mobile park in Angels gear.
01:56 --> 01:58 [SPEAKER_01]: They need to do it when the Angels next come back to Seattle.
01:59 --> 02:00 [SPEAKER_01]: But then it's not Christmas in July.
02:00 --> 02:02 [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, it can be Christmas whenever.
02:02 --> 02:04 [SPEAKER_01]: How else are we going to thank the angels for this?
02:05 --> 02:06 [SPEAKER_01]: How else is this going to be happened?
02:06 --> 02:10 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's let's peel back the curtain a little bit and tell you a little bit about the story today.
02:10 --> 02:20 [SPEAKER_01]: So we were sitting and having lunch with Joe Doyle today and Joe, if you guys been following along online, he's as plugged in and it's anyone it comes to these straffix and we're talking about potential options for the Mariners to take at number three.
02:21 --> 02:29 [SPEAKER_01]: Lao and I had put out our pre-draft top threes for this first round for the Mariners to pick at number three this morning on our Instagram channel.
02:31 --> 02:34 [SPEAKER_01]: I picked number one was Kate Anderson for me.
02:35 --> 02:36 [SPEAKER_01]: Number two was Ethan Holiday.
02:36 --> 02:38 [SPEAKER_01]: Number three was Iva Arcat for Lyle.
02:38 --> 02:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Number one was Seth Hernandez.
02:40 --> 02:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Number two was Kate and number three was Ethan.
02:42 --> 02:48 [SPEAKER_01]: So we had our mind set up when we throw those ideas out to Joe and Joe is sitting there and thinking it's like all right.
02:49 --> 02:52 [SPEAKER_01]: who I'm thinking and who I've, you know, talked to about this.
02:53 --> 02:57 [SPEAKER_01]: I think the Mariners choices don't include those guys for the most part.
02:57 --> 03:02 [SPEAKER_01]: The choices for the Mariners at this point was Seth Hernandez, he thought.
03:03 --> 03:04 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
03:04 --> 03:04 [SPEAKER_01]: That one he was right.
03:05 --> 03:08 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think if Kate wasn't there, good chance would have been Seth.
03:08 --> 03:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
03:09 --> 03:18 [SPEAKER_02]: And from everything we understand, again, talking to a few different people about it and just trying to gather some information, the Mariners really liked Seth Hernandez.
03:18 --> 03:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Like TJ just said,
03:20 --> 03:23 [SPEAKER_02]: We assumed Kate was going to go on the top two and had Kate Anderson gone somewhere else.
03:24 --> 03:26 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I wouldn't have been shocked at all to see it be Seth Hernandez.
03:27 --> 03:37 [SPEAKER_02]: But this was such an unprecedented turn of events that the one thing we were constantly told by everybody and had the understanding of is look.
03:37 --> 03:43 [SPEAKER_02]: If things get crazy and Kate Anderson falls to three, the Mariners are taking that pick and running to the podium.
03:44 --> 03:45 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'd say they did that.
03:46 --> 03:47 [SPEAKER_01]: And they absolutely did.
03:47 --> 03:49 [SPEAKER_01]: There was a scenario where Kate got to three, right?
03:51 --> 03:51 [SPEAKER_01]: excuse me.
03:52 --> 03:54 [SPEAKER_01]: If Ethan Hall, it's been a long day folks.
03:54 --> 03:55 [SPEAKER_01]: It has been a long week.
03:55 --> 03:59 [SPEAKER_01]: It's hot down here, so lown I have been adjusting to the heat a little bit.
03:59 --> 04:01 [SPEAKER_01]: It's a little more muggy than it is in Seattle.
04:01 --> 04:09 [SPEAKER_02]: But we'll we'll give everybody a full all-star week recap on Friday's episode where we're fully back when we get back into the swing of things.
04:09 --> 04:12 [SPEAKER_02]: We'll tell everybody about what we saw at the Derby about what our week was like.
04:12 --> 04:16 [SPEAKER_02]: We're also going to have Joe on Joe Doyle for Friday's episode to break down the whole draft.
04:16 --> 04:18 [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, give us till then, then we'll break it all down.
04:19 --> 04:25 [SPEAKER_01]: And it was Joe today who floated the idea of Bremner to us at first, but he didn't have Bremner to the angels.
04:25 --> 04:28 [SPEAKER_01]: He had Bremner as a possibility to the Mariners at number three.
04:28 --> 04:34 [SPEAKER_01]: And that made Lyle and I perk our eyebrows up a little bit and think, have not heard that name at the top of the draft.
04:34 --> 04:37 [SPEAKER_01]: If you guys are unfamiliar with Tyler Bremner, he pitched at UC Santa Barbara.
04:37 --> 04:42 [SPEAKER_01]: He was supposed to be a top five pick preseason, but he struggled for the first half of the year.
04:43 --> 04:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Then came back with a really strong second half of the year, which up to draft stock a little bit.
04:48 --> 04:53 [SPEAKER_01]: But even still when Joe mentioned that to us, I wasn't sitting there thinking the Mariners were going to take Tyler Bremner.
04:53 --> 04:55 [SPEAKER_01]: I thought they were just going to take Seth Hernandez at this point.
04:55 --> 05:01 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'd accepted that Kate was going to go, I think most likely number one, due to as soon as Will, it's one off the board at number one.
05:01 --> 05:02 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like,
05:03 --> 05:05 [SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh my god, it's gonna happen.
05:05 --> 05:06 [SPEAKER_01]: And maybe it'll happen.
05:06 --> 05:06 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it'll happen.
05:06 --> 05:07 [SPEAKER_01]: And then the angels.
05:08 --> 05:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, so let us say this too.
05:10 --> 05:13 [SPEAKER_02]: Kylie McDaniel of ESPN is we got late into the day on Sunday.
05:13 --> 05:17 [SPEAKER_02]: He put out his final mock draft, just a few hours before the actual draft started.
05:17 --> 05:19 [SPEAKER_02]: And he had the same information in there.
05:19 --> 05:28 [SPEAKER_02]: He said, look, I think the Mariners are taking Seth Hernandez at three, but don't be shocked to see a name like Tyler Bremner gets selected for an underslot value here.
05:28 --> 05:30 [SPEAKER_02]: So like, hmm, this is interesting.
05:30 --> 05:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Now,
05:32 --> 05:36 [SPEAKER_02]: I thought even with all that, it would still be set as the pick.
05:36 --> 05:38 [SPEAKER_02]: Like TJ said though, now fast forwarding to the draft.
05:39 --> 05:43 [SPEAKER_02]: Eli Willets goes one and you're like, oh, things just got more possible.
05:43 --> 05:49 [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't really get my hopes up though because of all the rumors with the angels supposedly thinking Liam Doyle at two.
05:49 --> 05:57 [SPEAKER_02]: I said to myself, oh, so they're just gonna take the other college left-hander on the board that just didn't go one and Kate Anderson and they'll put him in the big league next month.
05:57 --> 06:00 [SPEAKER_02]: So I didn't really get my hopes up with Willets at one.
06:00 --> 06:09 [SPEAKER_02]: I got a little more hopeful, but I didn't really let it happen until we see Joe's tweet that says they've selected Tyler Bremner at number two.
06:09 --> 06:11 [SPEAKER_00]: I jumped up and down at this one.
06:12 --> 06:13 [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't jump in there.
06:13 --> 06:15 [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, oh my god, it's gonna happen.
06:16 --> 06:20 [SPEAKER_01]: And then Kate Anderson, a few minutes later, gets selected to the Mariners.
06:20 --> 06:31 [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and there was a report out there by Sam Bloom at the athletic that he it was asked on the angels press call whether or not Bremner was assuming he was going to be an underslaught since he wasn't supposed to be picked to sign.
06:32 --> 06:36 [SPEAKER_01]: And I think it was Paramination answering or whoever they're scouting director is and was like,
06:37 --> 06:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Um, as of right now, no, I don't think so.
06:39 --> 06:41 [SPEAKER_01]: And I'll sit in there and think it like, wait.
06:41 --> 06:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Wait.
06:42 --> 06:45 [SPEAKER_02]: This, this franchise is SNL do.
06:45 --> 06:47 [SPEAKER_02]: That is an SNL skit of a franchise.
06:47 --> 06:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Look, no disrespect to Tyler Brumner, but
06:50 --> 06:54 [SPEAKER_02]: for full slot value, that's your pick.
06:55 --> 06:56 [SPEAKER_02]: Where on earth did that come from?
06:57 --> 06:57 [SPEAKER_02]: They keep them nowhere.
06:57 --> 07:00 [SPEAKER_02]: You didn't see them in a rumor like that anywhere.
07:00 --> 07:02 [SPEAKER_01]: No, it was totally out of left field.
07:02 --> 07:17 [SPEAKER_01]: And then the news that comes out after that about Kate Anderson's bonus, our friend, RMLATE and while we were on the just baseball draft live stream broke this, broke this right as we were on there announcing that Kate Anderson's signing for eight point eight million dollars with the Mariners.
07:18 --> 07:22 [SPEAKER_01]: And that will save the Mariners, seven hundred thousand dollars under slot.
07:22 --> 07:41 [SPEAKER_01]: So you're telling me Tyler Brebner, if this all ends up once all the dotted lines are signed, and we get the official information with the bonuses and such, it gets announced that Tyler Brebner signs for over ten million dollars, and the Mariners get Kate Anderson for eight point at, how is that, how is that anything other than legitimately the best case scenario at that number three pick?
07:42 --> 07:43 [SPEAKER_01]: We sat here and we wanted a home run.
07:43 --> 07:44 [SPEAKER_01]: We wanted a home run.
07:45 --> 07:46 [SPEAKER_01]: This is a home run right here.
07:46 --> 07:47 [SPEAKER_01]: So let me tell you this.
07:47 --> 07:50 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to look right at the camera and I'm going to say this with Katie Anderson.
07:50 --> 07:56 [SPEAKER_01]: As we said in our draft profile, there's a real chance if he doesn't get hurt, he's in the big leagues next year.
07:56 --> 08:07 [SPEAKER_01]: Maybe at the end of the year, depending on how much development he needs and I'm assuming he's not going to throw it all this year because we highlight in our profile, he had Tommy John and high school and he essentially hadn't pitched a full season in three years before this year.
08:08 --> 08:11 [SPEAKER_01]: So they're going to shut them down and let his arm rest before they build them back up next year.
08:11 --> 08:13 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, there's a chance by the end of the season.
08:13 --> 08:19 [SPEAKER_01]: We see a guy like Kate Anderson and you have your next rotation guy.
08:19 --> 08:24 [SPEAKER_01]: This is the next guy in this Mariners starting rotation and there shouldn't be any less of an expectation than that.
08:24 --> 08:25 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, you pick a guy that's high.
08:25 --> 08:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Of course, that's the expectation.
08:27 --> 08:28 [SPEAKER_02]: You're not picking them to pitch in the bullpen.
08:29 --> 08:31 [SPEAKER_02]: So I also think it's going to happen pretty fast.
08:31 --> 08:33 [SPEAKER_02]: I think that's the expectation with Kate Anderson.
08:34 --> 08:41 [SPEAKER_02]: Do we want to get into the implications of what this pick could do for the Mariners even in the next six to twelve months here?
08:41 --> 08:48 [SPEAKER_02]: Because I think it actually presents some really interesting scenarios because Cates get a move so fast, which is what's so fascinating about this Mariners pick.
08:49 --> 08:51 [SPEAKER_02]: They've never taken this guy with this high of a floor.
08:51 --> 08:55 [SPEAKER_02]: For as great as Logan Gilbert is, as great as George Kirby is, as great as Brian Lewis.
08:56 --> 08:57 [SPEAKER_02]: Those guys still need a time to develop.
08:58 --> 09:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Kate Anderson is expected to move very fast to the point where, at next year's all-star break, when we're in Philly, we may be talking about Kate Anderson's first few stars as a mariner.
09:08 --> 09:08 [SPEAKER_02]: It is possible.
09:09 --> 09:11 [SPEAKER_02]: We don't know exactly what the timeline's gonna be, but it's possible.
09:12 --> 09:14 [SPEAKER_02]: So let's say that's the case, right?
09:14 --> 09:22 [SPEAKER_02]: If they have the expectation that Kate Anderson's gonna pitch in the mariner's rotation, at some point in twenty twenty-six, what does that mean for Luis Castillo?
09:25 --> 09:43 [SPEAKER_01]: The problem with that question is that I feel like we knew the answer to it before the Mariners even committed to picking a college picture at number three, but it certainly, and we can't, we cannot say anything with a guarantee, but that's just kind of what the feeling is with what will happen with Luis Castillo wants his no trade clause expires.
09:44 --> 09:52 [SPEAKER_01]: They are, they're already multiple reports that they trade trading on this off season, but now that they have arguably the most MLB ready left hander in this entire draft,
09:52 --> 09:57 [SPEAKER_01]: with a four-pitch mix and a valueator saying, yeah, you don't need to touch this guy much in the minor leagues.
09:57 --> 10:01 [SPEAKER_01]: You just let him go and let him throw much innings and it'll get to the big leagues here eventually.
10:01 --> 10:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Makes the decision a lot easier.
10:03 --> 10:09 [SPEAKER_01]: You answer the question what you'll do in the three to four months before Kate Anderson makes his debut potentially.
10:09 --> 10:09 [SPEAKER_01]: No promises.
10:10 --> 10:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Potentially in the off season when you have free agents available or you can go trade for somebody.
10:15 --> 10:22 [SPEAKER_01]: But it makes it a lot easier when you say, hey, we have a potential mid to top rotation arm depending on how this guy develops in the minor leagues.
10:22 --> 10:24 [SPEAKER_01]: And we can offload cast you as contract as well.
10:24 --> 10:33 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, that paired with even if they don't go sign some starter in the offseason, they just would do what they've been doing already most of this year with a starter out.
10:33 --> 10:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Logan Evans and Emerson Hancock have thrown some really valuable innings.
10:36 --> 10:38 [SPEAKER_02]: And again, I know Logan didn't have his best start in New York.
10:39 --> 10:41 [SPEAKER_02]: For the most part, Logan Evans, we continue to talk about it.
10:41 --> 10:43 [SPEAKER_02]: It's had a really, really good rookie year.
10:43 --> 10:45 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's put together some really good starts.
10:45 --> 10:48 [SPEAKER_02]: So say he's the guy that is the number five man in the Mariners rotation.
10:48 --> 10:50 [SPEAKER_02]: As the year starts, you run with that.
10:50 --> 10:52 [SPEAKER_02]: And then whenever Tades ready,
10:53 --> 11:00 [SPEAKER_02]: He's ready and you make your decision then on how you want to slot him into the rotation and how you make his innings work in with everybody else's.
11:00 --> 11:08 [SPEAKER_02]: So again, I don't even know if they necessarily have to go and do that if they trade the weeds in terms of like, do they need to sign an additional veteran starter?
11:08 --> 11:10 [SPEAKER_02]: No, I think you have enough guys in your system already right now.
11:11 --> 11:13 [SPEAKER_02]: So I think this
11:14 --> 11:16 [SPEAKER_02]: I think this makes things very interesting for Luis Castillo.
11:16 --> 11:18 [SPEAKER_02]: We already thought he was probably going to get dealt this upcoming winner.
11:18 --> 11:23 [SPEAKER_02]: Now it really feels like that is what we're on a little bit of a crash course for.
11:25 --> 11:33 [SPEAKER_01]: And then within the farm system, this is, you don't draft by need in MLB draft.
11:33 --> 11:36 [SPEAKER_01]: You draft on best player available and then you manage from there.
11:37 --> 11:52 [SPEAKER_01]: once Logan Evans got promoted the big leagues you'd have starters really the last line of starter was Logan Evans in terms of major like I can clearly see this guy as a future major league starter within a couple of years confidently
11:52 --> 11:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Kate Anderson finally kind of plugs that hole a little bit.
11:55 --> 11:57 [SPEAKER_01]: You can look around the end field and say, look, we got Colt.
11:58 --> 11:59 [SPEAKER_01]: We brought up Colt this year.
11:59 --> 11:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Great.
11:59 --> 12:05 [SPEAKER_01]: We got infielders that we can look for to Michael a royal felony and eventually down the road and outfield when Johnny gets healthy.
12:05 --> 12:06 [SPEAKER_01]: You have him.
12:06 --> 12:08 [SPEAKER_01]: You have last Montez behind the plate.
12:08 --> 12:09 [SPEAKER_01]: You have Harry Ford.
12:09 --> 12:14 [SPEAKER_01]: You can say if you want to Tyler Lockler at first base, but
12:15 --> 12:33 [SPEAKER_01]: at pitcher you couldn't like you couldn't say that my key morale is friend of the pod was the next guy up on that list, but my key is working his way back he was injured at the beginning of the earnings been working through a few things at double as well and he had a long way to develop as a high schooler, but Kate man, you finally look in your like, man, that's a starter.
12:33 --> 12:35 [SPEAKER_01]: That's a major league starter.
12:35 --> 12:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and pair it with this.
12:37 --> 12:39 [SPEAKER_02]: how far's Jerangelo along in his development next year.
12:39 --> 12:43 [SPEAKER_02]: So you want to see starters coming down the pipeline next year.
12:43 --> 12:50 [SPEAKER_02]: I would say, Kate and Jerangelo are what one call that I forgot to mention, Jerangelo.
12:50 --> 13:00 [SPEAKER_02]: So no, no, and I get it because he wasn't going to be big league ready this year, but come next year when you're looking at who's going to be coming down the pipeline, those two are going to be knocking right on the doorstep, which makes things very interesting.
13:01 --> 13:03 [SPEAKER_01]: And then you have Sloan who's a little bit farther away as well.
13:03 --> 13:06 [SPEAKER_01]: This puts the Mariners in a very good position.
13:06 --> 13:10 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't, I said at the top of the spot guest, I don't think this pick could have gone any better for the Mariners.
13:11 --> 13:15 [SPEAKER_01]: I think they arguably had this guy at the number one pick on their board if they had the option to pick him.
13:15 --> 13:18 [SPEAKER_01]: But there was a thought in their mind that they weren't going to be able to swing him.
13:19 --> 13:20 [SPEAKER_01]: And then they were able to swing them.
13:20 --> 13:23 [SPEAKER_01]: So now they have what they want in their farm system.
13:23 --> 13:25 [SPEAKER_01]: They have ten top one hundred prospects now.
13:25 --> 13:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Cade Anderson's a top one hundred prospect majorly baseball right at this moment.
13:29 --> 13:32 [SPEAKER_01]: But we're not even mentioning and we'll see as the new list come out.
13:32 --> 13:36 [SPEAKER_01]: The the other two picks the Mariners here made on day one.
13:37 --> 13:43 [SPEAKER_01]: while we're recording Luke Stevenson, a catcher out of North Carolina, Nick Becker, high school shortstop out of New Jersey.
13:43 --> 13:44 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll see where those guys fit in.
13:44 --> 13:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not totally certain those guys are top one hundred prospects, but the Mariners right now have at least ten and they have a lot of other fun guys.
13:51 --> 13:55 [SPEAKER_01]: They can go trade for or trade for sign and draft an upcoming day.
13:55 --> 13:58 [SPEAKER_01]: So you take a look out at this upcoming trade deadline.
13:58 --> 14:00 [SPEAKER_01]: The ammo as we expected has grown.
14:01 --> 14:03 [SPEAKER_01]: It is grown and you have the options to trade.
14:03 --> 14:04 [SPEAKER_01]: But we're not here to talk about the trade.
14:04 --> 14:05 [SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about the picks.
14:06 --> 14:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and how could you not be fired up?
14:08 --> 14:10 [SPEAKER_02]: It is something to think about because again,
14:11 --> 14:31 [SPEAKER_02]: What do you do with all these prospects at some point you're going to have big league needs and at some point you're going to have to sacrifice from your farm to get the big league needs even if it involves trading some pictures like I don't know if there'll be pictures in this farm system on the trading block but now that you have somebody like Kate Anderson who's not that far away it does make things again very interesting with
14:32 --> 14:37 [SPEAKER_02]: who may be out there, who they could trade for, who they be willing to give up, just because again, you have guys coming down the pipeline.
14:38 --> 14:40 [SPEAKER_02]: I would have been fired up to see the Mariners take South Hernandez.
14:40 --> 14:40 [SPEAKER_02]: Don't get me wrong.
14:41 --> 14:45 [SPEAKER_02]: But, South Hernandez would have been a project, and he would have taken a few years to develop.
14:45 --> 14:48 [SPEAKER_02]: He would have spent all of twenty, twenty, six in Modesto.
14:48 --> 14:50 [SPEAKER_02]: He would have taken more time, but that's fine.
14:51 --> 14:59 [SPEAKER_02]: However, with Kate Anderson, it moves everybody's timeline up, and it almost pushes more urgency on the organization in terms of
15:01 --> 15:18 [SPEAKER_02]: making moves at the big level, because again, when you have these prospects, pitching-wise that are going to be knocking on the door, especially two of them in Gerangelo and Kate Anderson, yeah, it's almost going to force your handle a little bit to say, hey, we either have to get these guys in the big leagues, or we've got to make some serious trades and upgrade our big league roster.
15:19 --> 15:24 [SPEAKER_02]: Be fired up about Kate Anderson for a variety of reasons, along with the fact that, of course, dude is a bulldog.
15:24 --> 15:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Dude threw a complete game shut out in the college world series.
15:27 --> 15:28 [SPEAKER_02]: He's got four pitches.
15:28 --> 15:30 [SPEAKER_02]: That baby sweeper business nasty.
15:30 --> 15:31 [SPEAKER_02]: Kurt Balls really good.
15:31 --> 15:33 [SPEAKER_02]: Pumps in the fastball at ninety seven.
15:33 --> 15:35 [SPEAKER_02]: At least that's what it gets up to.
15:36 --> 15:41 [SPEAKER_02]: He is going to be such a fun watch in this system with this pitching lab this development system.
15:42 --> 15:42 [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I can't wait.
15:43 --> 15:45 [SPEAKER_01]: And if you guys want to hear more detailed breakdown of it.
15:45 --> 15:48 [SPEAKER_01]: Number one, listen to our episode with Joe on Friday.
15:48 --> 15:50 [SPEAKER_01]: He's going to give a fantastic breakdown of it.
15:50 --> 15:56 [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to hear our draft profile on Kate Anderson in case you missed it, that's episode two, sixty five, the one we did with R. I'm just last week.
15:57 --> 15:58 [SPEAKER_01]: And you can hear us break down Kate Anderson.
15:58 --> 15:59 [SPEAKER_01]: He's got a
15:59 --> 16:04 [SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's been an interesting journey for Kate and he's certainly as much as we're hyping up here, not a perfect prospect.
16:04 --> 16:10 [SPEAKER_01]: So we highlight all the positives and then all of the some of the potential red flags with Kate in that episode to sixty five.
16:10 --> 16:14 [SPEAKER_01]: So those would be two episodes to check out if you want to hear more about Kate Anderson allow before we wrap up.
16:14 --> 16:18 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about a couple of the other picks from today.
16:18 --> 16:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's start with Luke Stephenson, the catcher out of North Carolina.
16:21 --> 16:22 [SPEAKER_01]: What does this signal?
16:22 --> 16:29 [SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, the background of Luke Stevenson, Dude Mashes Aaron fit had him number of the number one college catcher on his board.
16:30 --> 16:36 [SPEAKER_01]: He only, I mean, he hit to fifty this year, but he matches that no BS near a thousand at North Carolina this year.
16:36 --> 16:39 [SPEAKER_01]: The power is the real legit tool from Luke Stevenson.
16:40 --> 16:41 [SPEAKER_01]: What else would you think about with him?
16:43 --> 16:46 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I would say this as soon as you mention what he hit in college.
16:46 --> 16:50 [SPEAKER_02]: This is why we say, don't look at batting average people.
16:51 --> 16:53 [SPEAKER_02]: He had a nine fifty OPS.
16:53 --> 16:55 [SPEAKER_02]: Don't look at the batting average.
16:55 --> 16:57 [SPEAKER_01]: Okay, but then let's use that as a comparison tool then.
16:57 --> 16:58 [SPEAKER_01]: So you're right.
16:58 --> 16:59 [SPEAKER_01]: Don't look at batting average.
16:59 --> 17:05 [SPEAKER_01]: But I was kind of curious because the Mariners have a very famed power hitting switch hitting.
17:05 --> 17:07 [SPEAKER_01]: I guess Luke Stevenson's a left handed hitter.
17:08 --> 17:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Catcher from the ACC.
17:10 --> 17:12 [SPEAKER_01]: His name, you might have heard of him as names Cal Rally.
17:12 --> 17:19 [SPEAKER_01]: Cal hit, if you're thinking about the difference, so the real concern of Luke Stephenson, the pluses his power, the concern is his hit tool.
17:19 --> 17:28 [SPEAKER_01]: Some swigimists, they're not, they're not, the scouts aren't really sure how he's going to hit, like where's the volume going to come from as he moves up levels.
17:28 --> 17:33 [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of curious, because I don't remember Cal Rally having an overwhelming hit tool when he came out of Florida State.
17:34 --> 17:37 [SPEAKER_01]: I will say his junior season at Florida State, Cal Rally hit three thirty.
17:37 --> 17:39 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, Luke Stevenson only hit two fifty one now.
17:40 --> 17:42 [SPEAKER_01]: Luke Stevenson much more consistent in college.
17:42 --> 17:43 [SPEAKER_01]: His two years in college.
17:44 --> 17:47 [SPEAKER_01]: He's young, by the way, he's only twenty years old right now, which is a huge plus.
17:48 --> 17:54 [SPEAKER_01]: So Luke Stevenson hits two fifty one his sophomore year at North Carolina, draft eligible sophomore.
17:54 --> 17:56 [SPEAKER_01]: Cal Rally is junior hit three thirty.
17:56 --> 17:58 [SPEAKER_01]: So that's the difference between the two guys, even with.
17:59 --> 18:03 [SPEAKER_01]: average to blow average hit tools and what they did with a metal bat and see how that progresses.
18:03 --> 18:07 [SPEAKER_01]: Just remember the minors, you know, Cal Rally, remember when he's in AAA, he was, he was really good.
18:07 --> 18:08 [SPEAKER_01]: He was mashing.
18:08 --> 18:12 [SPEAKER_01]: Not everywhere to Cal Rally blow the doors off offensively.
18:12 --> 18:20 [SPEAKER_01]: And some of that came because the hit tool wasn't there and say an Arkansas, if you don't have a hit tool, sometimes it's a little harder make up for it with just power.
18:21 --> 18:26 [SPEAKER_02]: But you're also getting a guy who could really mash, who's good behind the plate.
18:26 --> 18:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Like he's good behind the plate.
18:27 --> 18:33 [SPEAKER_02]: They say as pop times roughly one nine, which for those who aren't that familiar with pop times, just to keep it simple, it's really good.
18:34 --> 18:39 [SPEAKER_02]: So good arm gets up fast, supposed to have good defensive tools behind the plate and hits for power.
18:40 --> 18:43 [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a perfect comp, but in a lot of ways it sounds a little bit like Cal Rally.
18:43 --> 18:45 [SPEAKER_02]: I'm not saying he's going to be Cal Rally.
18:45 --> 18:48 [SPEAKER_02]: That's not a fair expectation to put on a guy who just got drafted.
18:48 --> 18:48 [SPEAKER_02]: But
18:49 --> 18:53 [SPEAKER_02]: There's tools here with Luke Stevenson, and I know it's a catcher, and it's a little interesting.
18:53 --> 19:00 [SPEAKER_02]: The Mariners would go not just back to bat college picks, but another catcher, which we'll get into in a minute.
19:01 --> 19:08 [SPEAKER_02]: But they clearly thought this was the best guy left on their board, and this was a guy that they really are invested in, and feel like it's going to click in their system.
19:08 --> 19:09 [SPEAKER_02]: And there's tools to dream on here.
19:10 --> 19:14 [SPEAKER_02]: So with the thirty-fifth pick, yeah, I think Luke Stevenson's a pretty interesting one.
19:16 --> 19:19 [SPEAKER_02]: Now we'll see how it shakes out in their system, but the bat here is the play.
19:20 --> 19:20 [SPEAKER_02]: And the power, I guess.
19:20 --> 19:23 [SPEAKER_01]: OK, so you said, how is this going to shake out in the system?
19:23 --> 19:24 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's just rip the bandate off.
19:25 --> 19:26 [SPEAKER_01]: What does this mean for Harry Ford?
19:29 --> 19:38 [SPEAKER_02]: It is, it is a little hard to imagine that he is still going to have a Mariners uniform on by the time August first rolls around, especially after this pick.
19:38 --> 19:43 [SPEAKER_02]: We just talked about how drafting Kate Anderson now makes Luis Castillo's future in Seattle, a little
19:44 --> 19:51 [SPEAKER_02]: murky if that's the right word like like it's a cloudies probably the better word just because it feels like that's a trade that may happen.
19:53 --> 19:58 [SPEAKER_02]: It almost feels like we're running toward a Harry Ford trade at the deadline.
19:58 --> 19:59 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's not fair.
20:00 --> 20:01 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe he really is here.
20:01 --> 20:05 [SPEAKER_02]: However, I would say this when Harry I'm in Harry for it.
20:05 --> 20:08 [SPEAKER_02]: You can tell it's already been a long two days long two days.
20:08 --> 20:09 [SPEAKER_02]: Long two days.
20:09 --> 20:11 [SPEAKER_02]: Well, we got cough drops so we're working through it.
20:11 --> 20:11 [SPEAKER_02]: It's
20:13 --> 20:23 [SPEAKER_02]: You have a guy who is only catching is just stuck in Triple A right now and has proven that he is not going to be moved to other positions by the organization.
20:23 --> 20:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Try it in the outfield, didn't work, has never played the infield catcher only.
20:28 --> 20:33 [SPEAKER_02]: And now the Mariners use another first round pick on a college catcher who's the same age as Harry Ford.
20:34 --> 20:38 [SPEAKER_02]: And they're not going to turn around and trade Luke Stevens in a week after drafting him.
20:38 --> 20:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Of course not.
20:39 --> 20:41 [SPEAKER_02]: So it just makes me think that
20:42 --> 20:43 [SPEAKER_02]: This is where we're headed.
20:43 --> 20:45 [SPEAKER_02]: And the mirrors have to make splashes at this deadline.
20:45 --> 20:46 [SPEAKER_02]: They just have to.
20:46 --> 20:50 [SPEAKER_02]: You've got to put some chip or push them chips in to get into the playoffs.
20:51 --> 20:55 [SPEAKER_02]: So it feels like with this pick, it may be a little bit of a safety net for Harry Ford.
20:55 --> 21:00 [SPEAKER_01]: And if I have it right, Harry Ford's gonna be real five eligible next year, am I, am I right?
21:01 --> 21:03 [SPEAKER_01]: Twenty twenty one draft.
21:03 --> 21:04 [SPEAKER_01]: That is, that's right.
21:05 --> 21:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Five years.
21:07 --> 21:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you wouldn't real five and you just put them on the forty man.
21:09 --> 21:11 [SPEAKER_01]: And that's so you protect him.
21:11 --> 21:13 [SPEAKER_01]: I would say this hedges against it.
21:13 --> 21:17 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think that I wouldn't say guarantee, but you don't feel as
21:18 --> 21:26 [SPEAKER_01]: guilty of gutting your system of catchers because after Harry Ford, there is not a catching prospect in the Mariners system that they would want to put in the big leagues in my opinion.
21:27 --> 21:36 [SPEAKER_01]: But now with Luke Stephenson, even say, while you go a year down the road and then decide to trade Harry Ford or again, they could go a year in and they could trade Luke Stephenson and keep Harry Ford.
21:36 --> 21:38 [SPEAKER_01]: It gives them options.
21:38 --> 21:39 [SPEAKER_01]: I think options is a good way to look at this.
21:40 --> 21:44 [SPEAKER_01]: If you're looking at it from an organizational perspective, right now they're in the process of collecting good players.
21:45 --> 21:55 [SPEAKER_01]: in a month or so or two months are in the offseason they'll decide how they want to organize those players and how I think it best shuffles out with these with him with the with the catchers and even some other players New York.
21:55 --> 21:58 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, look, it's not a guarantee is going to be traded in the next two weeks.
21:58 --> 21:59 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to say that, but
22:01 --> 22:06 [SPEAKER_02]: It just feels like he's the prospect that's been dangled out the most, especially after the Cal Extension.
22:06 --> 22:07 [SPEAKER_02]: Now you see him draft a catcher.
22:07 --> 22:08 [SPEAKER_02]: You're right.
22:08 --> 22:10 [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe it doesn't happen until the winner.
22:10 --> 22:18 [SPEAKER_02]: But when you know you're going to have to give something up to get something significant and Harry Ford's a top-hundred prospect who's close to the big leagues who's hitting really well in AAA.
22:19 --> 22:25 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, it's no guarantee he's getting traded at the deadline, but it just feels like that may be who the Mariners shop around.
22:26 --> 22:32 [SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk for a second about Nick Becker, high school shortstop from New Jersey.
22:33 --> 22:33 [SPEAKER_01]: He's a big guy.
22:33 --> 22:37 [SPEAKER_01]: Stan six for it sounds like he'll stick a shortstop.
22:37 --> 22:39 [SPEAKER_01]: He also has got a plus power tool.
22:39 --> 22:46 [SPEAKER_01]: Swing gets a little along those same sort of hit concerns as Luke Stephenson, though much younger because he's getting drafted out of high school.
22:46 --> 22:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Anything else to add?
22:47 --> 23:03 [SPEAKER_02]: just excited to see him look when you're six four in place short stop there's always the potential that you may move to third base it's it's just how it goes i'm not saying he can't stick a short there's just always that potential we talked about that with Ethan holiday being so big and he may move to third eventually but
23:04 --> 23:06 [SPEAKER_02]: Good athlete, pretty agile.
23:06 --> 23:08 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, real power.
23:08 --> 23:12 [SPEAKER_02]: They seem to think like the swing seems to be like, it seems to say he has some real lift in the swing.
23:13 --> 23:15 [SPEAKER_02]: And we'll see how he progresses as he goes.
23:15 --> 23:17 [SPEAKER_02]: I think they say early, early reports.
23:17 --> 23:20 [SPEAKER_02]: Again, it's hard to know that much about a high school or as soon as he gets drafted.
23:21 --> 23:23 [SPEAKER_02]: And it's not one of the top five, ten, whatever guys.
23:25 --> 23:29 [SPEAKER_02]: They seem to think it's got a little bit of a long swing, so maybe in time that's something shortens up.
23:29 --> 23:31 [SPEAKER_02]: But again, there's real tools there, which is why he drafted him.
23:31 --> 23:35 [SPEAKER_02]: Good athlete seems to be able to play short, big guy, and has some power.
23:35 --> 23:39 [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, sounds like a guy to draft in the second round and hope it works.
23:39 --> 23:44 [SPEAKER_01]: As of right now that we're sitting here, do we know where Kate Anderson's under slot money is going?
23:47 --> 23:47 [SPEAKER_01]: Do we know?
23:48 --> 23:50 [SPEAKER_02]: Have we seen any stuff about backers money?
23:50 --> 23:51 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
23:52 --> 23:52 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so.
23:52 --> 23:55 [SPEAKER_01]: Bechered didn't seem like an overslaught guy at fifty seven.
23:57 --> 24:02 [SPEAKER_01]: See this is when we go to our friend Joe Doyle and we check in and see what it is, but he's still tweeting out picks.
24:03 --> 24:04 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't think he has the money yet.
24:04 --> 24:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
24:05 --> 24:06 [SPEAKER_01]: I don't think we'll know about the money yet.
24:06 --> 24:11 [SPEAKER_01]: I think we'll have a better when we talk to Joe on Friday for Friday's episode.
24:11 --> 24:22 [SPEAKER_01]: We'll have a better idea of where that money was if it was actually used all for one player or they just sprinkled it around at a few picks to get a guy slightly overslaught that they wanted at that certain pick.
24:22 --> 24:27 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I don't think Luke Stevenson's going to be some crazy overslot at that pick.
24:27 --> 24:27 [SPEAKER_02]: I don't.
24:27 --> 24:28 [SPEAKER_02]: Nick Becker will see.
24:28 --> 24:38 [SPEAKER_02]: You just don't know what the high schoolers, but yeah, what we'll find out in the coming days at the very least we will talk about it on Friday's episode with Joe, but yeah, you should be happy about the first few picks they made.
24:38 --> 24:41 [SPEAKER_02]: It's guys with real power potential on the offensive side of the ball.
24:42 --> 24:44 [SPEAKER_02]: Guys with tools that are going to be really exciting, but again,
24:45 --> 24:49 [SPEAKER_02]: Like looking forward to seeing Luke Stevens and looking forward to seeing Nick Becker.
24:49 --> 24:55 [SPEAKER_02]: I really hope those guys develop his prospects, but this episode's all about Kate Anderson.
24:55 --> 24:56 [SPEAKER_02]: This is what it's about.
24:56 --> 25:00 [SPEAKER_02]: The Mariners had the win of the draft tonight because Kate Anderson felt the three and he's a Seattle Mariners.
25:01 --> 25:04 [SPEAKER_02]: That's what this is about and you should be nothing but fired up to see.
25:04 --> 25:05 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Ari.
25:05 --> 25:06 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Perry.
25:06 --> 25:09 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
25:09 --> 25:11 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to the rally monkey.
25:11 --> 25:13 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to the rocks in center field.
25:13 --> 25:15 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to Michael Trout.
25:16 --> 25:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
25:17 --> 25:20 [SPEAKER_02]: You guys you never fail to amaze.
25:20 --> 25:26 [SPEAKER_02]: I got to tell you you guys you guys know how to entertain and you entertained tonight with your draft
25:27 --> 25:28 [SPEAKER_02]: and TJ Bowling.
25:28 --> 25:29 [SPEAKER_01]: What's the YouTube?
25:30 --> 25:30 [SPEAKER_01]: Bow.
25:31 --> 25:32 [SPEAKER_01]: Bow and our hotel set up.
25:32 --> 25:33 [SPEAKER_01]: A radar hote before we wrap up.
25:33 --> 25:34 [SPEAKER_01]: Read the hotel set up.
25:35 --> 25:35 [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
25:35 --> 25:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Tell us how we did.
25:36 --> 25:39 [SPEAKER_02]: Beds are made, everything, so shout out to us.
25:39 --> 25:43 [SPEAKER_02]: I would also say that, yes, again, I will double down.
25:43 --> 25:47 [SPEAKER_02]: Mariners need to do Christmas in July and just hang angels, banners all over the ballpark.
25:49 --> 25:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Christmas tree, but instead of putting a star at the top, we put an angel at the top.
25:53 --> 25:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
25:53 --> 25:53 [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
25:54 --> 26:06 [SPEAKER_02]: And again, you know how like for the fourth of July or Memorial Day, sometimes instead of the divisional standing flags out in left field and left center field, they'll just do all American flags for again Memorial Day, fourth of July.
26:06 --> 26:13 [SPEAKER_02]: For Christmas in July, change all those standing to just all angels flags and hang them from left to right all across the outfield and left in left center.
26:14 --> 26:14 [SPEAKER_01]: I'm down.
26:14 --> 26:14 [SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
26:15 --> 26:17 [SPEAKER_01]: Mariners marketing, you might be listening to this.
26:19 --> 26:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Just credit at Marine Lair pod when you guys do it.
26:21 --> 26:21 [SPEAKER_01]: Thanks.
26:22 --> 26:22 [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
26:22 --> 26:22 [SPEAKER_02]: Great.
26:23 --> 26:27 [SPEAKER_02]: All right, I think that just about wraps up this edition of the Marine Layer Podcast.
26:27 --> 26:28 [SPEAKER_02]: We will do a Wednesday episode.
26:28 --> 26:32 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to do a quick little first half recap as we're in the middle of the All-Star Break.
26:33 --> 26:34 [SPEAKER_02]: Still talk ball.
26:34 --> 26:36 [SPEAKER_02]: Still give you guys something to listen to in the middle of the week.
26:36 --> 26:39 [SPEAKER_02]: And then again, Friday, we're going to break down our whole All-Star Week.
26:39 --> 26:43 [SPEAKER_02]: We're going to talk to Joe Doyle, break down all the draft pick because there's a bunch more coming.
26:43 --> 26:44 [SPEAKER_02]: It's not just these three guys.
26:44 --> 26:45 [SPEAKER_02]: There'll be a bunch of guys to talk about.
26:46 --> 26:47 [SPEAKER_02]: throughout the next couple of days.
