[00:02:10] while I have to ask how was it being
[00:02:13] 10 feet from future Mariner Kyle Tucker tonight
[00:02:18] who how was it I was invigorated
[00:02:21] like I could just feel new life blowing
[00:02:25] through me I'm just watching this dude roam around the outfield I was
[00:02:28] like
[00:02:29] he was made for this ballpark it just it fits him
[00:02:32] it fits him like you can just feel the vibes going up
[00:02:36] and up with Kyle Tucker in the ballpark I gotta tell you
[00:02:39] did you did you just feel like you're you're gonna whisper to him it's like
[00:02:43] our cow repeat after me
[00:02:44] Seattle
[00:02:48] yeah it's like let's go Mariners see
[00:02:51] it likes go Mariners well I heard the champs
[00:02:56] here on Monday I gotta tell you though what about you making him say
[00:03:01] it
[00:03:03] see what's the old saying if you say Beetlejuice three times it'll
[00:03:06] it'll happen you just gotta Kyle Tucker needs to say Seattle Mariners three
[00:03:10] times
[00:03:11] that's it and then I'm in jail now
[00:03:16] well we're less than two months away people start gearing up
[00:03:20] you can honestly customize the jersey right now if you wanted to
[00:03:23] and you know what would help how Tucker becoming a Mariner
[00:03:26] the Mariners when the next three games this series what did I say in
[00:03:31] the
[00:03:31] in the game winning tweet here on Monday night every passing
[00:03:35] Astros lost Kyle Tucker get further
[00:03:38] and further out the door in Houston
[00:03:42] it's only facts only people
[00:03:46] there six under five hundred weren't nearly June
[00:03:49] first were sweet as everybody knows who tunes into this pod
[00:03:53] we speak backs only here this is simply facts
[00:03:57] get on the train while it's still hot right yeah we are we are 100 we're the
[00:04:02] most
[00:04:03] factual people you can know there's a reason show a tiny is here
[00:04:06] playing under a one-year 65 million dollar contract
[00:04:10] facts only and it's because we handed out those index card saying come to
[00:04:16] Seattle to
[00:04:16] right yeah how many those do you still have by the way I still have a
[00:04:20] few
[00:04:21] no okay I am re we were part on those
[00:04:25] I'm keeping them so I know he was injured that series but
[00:04:29] doesn't change the fact that not only do we work to make them pass around the
[00:04:33] ballpark
[00:04:34] and we put effort into that show hey I hope I hope one day
[00:04:37] I hope one day we get to meet and I can just hand you one of those cards
[00:04:41] like think of what could have been man think what could have been
[00:04:44] as he's collecting his deferred sick
[00:04:47] his deferred 68 million dollar paycheck right
[00:04:51] exactly well we can get there when we get there
[00:04:55] let's get to our Mariner story lines let's start here on Monday because
[00:04:59] a surprise earlier today Ryan bliss gets the call up
[00:05:03] and he's now in the roster replacing Jorge Polanco who goes to the 10 day
[00:05:07] injured list
[00:05:08] with hamstring tightness are we surprised that it's Ryan bliss
[00:05:12] taking this roster spot I'm not that surprised
[00:05:16] I think there was some people that thought it was gonna be areas that
[00:05:19] just came back up
[00:05:20] but I honestly didn't think it was a slam dunk to be area so there was a
[00:05:23] chance
[00:05:24] but this has been hitting he's got about a hundred and ten games under his
[00:05:29] belt now in triple-a
[00:05:30] for his career he'd started to really hit
[00:05:33] especially over the last month Justin Hollander talked about it on Monday
[00:05:36] how his
[00:05:37] approach has gotten better he's walked more strikeouts have come down and
[00:05:41] you've seen some power
[00:05:42] so would my first guess have been
[00:05:45] they just bring areas back sure my shocked bliss got the call up not
[00:05:48] really
[00:05:49] and excited for him to I think it first my thought was
[00:05:53] arrears but back the more I look into this the more it actually makes sense
[00:05:58] about Ryan bliss so
[00:05:59] let's just get paint the picture of his last month he's reached base over
[00:06:02] 40 percent of the time in triple-a last month he's got a 412 on base
[00:06:06] slugging nearly 500 with 127 WRC plus in triple-a
[00:06:10] good not unbelievable but still pretty darn good for Ryan bliss
[00:06:14] in triple-a as just a 24 year old so okay that's good
[00:06:18] walking and striking out equal amounts over that stretch 16.7 percent of the
[00:06:22] time
[00:06:23] both walks and for strikeouts so that
[00:06:26] you know that's just the the bat profile then I'm sitting here thinking
[00:06:30] as well so
[00:06:31] he Justin Hollander was also very
[00:06:35] complimentary of Ryan bliss's defense okay good or is it in playing a
[00:06:38] defense this season
[00:06:39] but you have wrote you have demo
[00:06:43] you have rojas and you have Ryan bliss now in the infield if you think
[00:06:45] all the three them can play solid defense
[00:06:48] combined between third and second okay that works out
[00:06:51] and then you have the base running factor to Ryan bliss
[00:06:54] in triple-a so far has stolen 28 of 34
[00:06:58] backs this year 28 of 34 and
[00:07:02] if we combine that with we serious he is
[00:07:06] has been a subpar base 18 percent town sprint speed this year
[00:07:10] doesn't qualify when it comes to base running run value
[00:07:13] but if that if he did qualify wouldn't be very good
[00:07:16] it kinda makes more sense when you run down the list of things that are
[00:07:19] important
[00:07:20] he makes the team or athletic I think they feel at this point offers them a
[00:07:24] little bit more at the back they like
[00:07:26] or is must really need those at bats in triple-a he was not hitting well
[00:07:31] up here at the big league level especially with that inconsistent playing
[00:07:33] time
[00:07:34] and they might just think that he isn't just need at bats he needs
[00:07:38] triple-a at bats he needs to refine his approach
[00:07:41] he needs to find more consistency at the plate and about to say
[00:07:45] eventually yeah he'll probably be back on the spigley roster because they
[00:07:47] traded for him to be a big leaguer
[00:07:49] and he's making big league money but for now let's see what Ryan bliss has
[00:07:53] yeah I think they're gonna let areas get some real about in triple-a and
[00:07:57] then evaluate
[00:07:58] moving forward but in terms of bliss
[00:08:01] for everything you outlined it does make a lot of sense
[00:08:05] and also put him put in this perspective to
[00:08:09] Jorge Polanco is going to be out for what they feel like is a pretty
[00:08:12] short amount of time
[00:08:13] Hollander said he wasn't gonna put an exact timeline on it but he said
[00:08:16] whether it's the minimum 10 days whether it's two weeks
[00:08:20] they're gonna get an official MRI on Tuesday and then evaluate
[00:08:23] by the point being they're not overly concerned about Polanco's injury they
[00:08:26] don't think it's a long-term thing
[00:08:27] they just wanna make sure they now get this right and make sure the
[00:08:30] hamstring is healthy
[00:08:31] rather than just taking it day by day
[00:08:35] and putting Polanco as day to day trying to just work through it with
[00:08:38] every passing day with him on the active roster
[00:08:40] so with that this could give them a pretty good idea of where Ryan Bliss
[00:08:46] is at if for the next two weeks he's up here
[00:08:49] and he looks totally overmatched he doesn't look
[00:08:52] like he's putting together competitive big league of bats then he's 24 years old
[00:08:57] you send him back to triple-a he gets a little bit more developmental time
[00:09:00] under his belt
[00:09:01] that's fine but again after a hundred and ten games I think it makes sense
[00:09:05] to wanna see where he's at and give him a shot at the big league level
[00:09:08] now on the flip side of that if in the next two weeks Ryan Bliss shows that
[00:09:12] he's ready for the big leagues and he's really providing a spark in the
[00:09:15] offense
[00:09:16] and he's putting up quality at bats he's playing good defense and he's
[00:09:18] stealing some bases
[00:09:19] then maybe just sticks maybe he's here a while
[00:09:23] maybe this is the call-up that keeps him around long term but point being
[00:09:26] with Polanco out for the next two weeks
[00:09:28] I think they'll have a pretty decent idea in that amount of time
[00:09:32] assuming Bliss isn't just playing once a week where he's at
[00:09:36] as a big leaguer if they get enough at bats under his belt in the next two weeks
[00:09:40] I think they'll have a pretty good idea for what to measure him off of
[00:09:42] as a recording here on Monday I like to see bats tonight
[00:09:46] did not look over match against a very good starter in
[00:09:49] Framber Valdez tonight I thought he put the bat head on the ball
[00:09:53] very nicely there at second base so yeah that makes sense
[00:09:57] it makes sense of what they're doing with this
[00:10:00] and I would say there's only really upside to go from here for the
[00:10:04] Mariners
[00:10:05] because they feel like Urias needs
[00:10:09] time in AAA and that replacement means
[00:10:12] Ryan Bliss is getting time I was kinda skeptical I'm gonna be honest at first
[00:10:15] because
[00:10:16] if you look at AAA him and Jonathan Clausay's numbers are
[00:10:20] very similar in AAA
[00:10:21] Clausay if you look at him at the plate right now little over matched
[00:10:25] not really adding much offensively for the Mariners
[00:10:29] batting down there in the 9 hole
[00:10:31] like he was tonight but only
[00:10:34] Clausay's gotten more those at bats in the big leagues
[00:10:38] and we've come to realize that haven't seen that with Ryan Bliss yet
[00:10:41] I'm excited for him this dude's matched in the minors matched in AA
[00:10:45] when the Mariners acquired him last year
[00:10:47] taking a little bit of time to get his footing in AAA
[00:10:50] if you just look at the broad stroke
[00:10:53] of the year you might not think he's ready and that's fine
[00:10:56] because I know he got off to a slow start this year before picking it up
[00:10:59] in May
[00:11:01] but we'll have to see he doesn't need to be great for the rest of the year he just needs to be
[00:11:04] great until
[00:11:05] Jorge Polanco's healthy at the minimum that's it
[00:11:08] he needs to have a good two weeks Polanco comes back
[00:11:11] and then Jorge Polanco picks it up and starts hitting again
[00:11:15] while Ryan Bliss probably finishes off whatever he needs to
[00:11:19] down in Tacoma before they ultimately want him to stick on the big league
[00:11:24] roster for the rest of his time
[00:11:25] or if he's just that good in these two weeks he'll stick around if he's
[00:11:29] providing that much value to the team
[00:11:31] they'll make room for him what that looks like we'll know in two weeks
[00:11:35] but he's got a real chance here to make his mark and also
[00:11:38] yeah how would you shuffle that I think we'll have a better idea two weeks
[00:11:43] from now
[00:11:43] because again we have to see what Bliss is playing like if he's really
[00:11:46] lighten it up I think we'll have to think of some options
[00:11:51] but I'll say just
[00:11:54] on off the top my head unless you are like
[00:11:58] the the left side slash up the middle infielders right now you have demo you
[00:12:02] have JP
[00:12:03] your Rojas and Bliss well here so here you go
[00:12:06] if Bliss is really hitting for the next two weeks and Polanco comes back
[00:12:11] you send Clasay back down demo plays more outfield than infield
[00:12:14] Bliss stays in the infield yeah that would be it yeah
[00:12:17] so Bliss has a chance to make his mark and stay
[00:12:20] and also if you want to get away from the numbers for a second
[00:12:23] I'm not sure there is a
[00:12:28] like more awesome dude in this organization than Ryan Bliss and that's
[00:12:31] saying a lot because there's so many awesome guys on this team and we could
[00:12:34] rattle off so many of them and so many of them that we've talked to but
[00:12:37] this guy has to be one of I don't even mean just baseball players just
[00:12:41] genuine people you will talk to it's really really cool
[00:12:46] so I like he is I'm rooting my tail off for Ryan Bliss to
[00:12:50] make this thing happen and stick in the big leagues because he is
[00:12:52] he's so easy to root for and he's such an awesome dude yeah really nice
[00:12:56] guy running in into him down at spring training too I will say on your
[00:13:00] on your roster thought I would rather him be playing if he's
[00:13:04] up here at the big league level because as with a lot of these guys
[00:13:07] doesn't do them a whole lot of good to sit on the bench so we'll see
[00:13:11] when two weeks comes around that'll be a better measure of
[00:13:15] that but when Jorge Polanco comes back he'll be back on the big league
[00:13:18] roster that's guaranteed so what else shovels around by
[00:13:22] then we're just gonna have to wait and see
[00:13:24] right yeah we'll see but again really excited for Ryan Bliss
[00:13:29] really easy guy to root for I'm sure in the next couple weeks as you guys get
[00:13:32] to see more of them you'll understand and get to see him
[00:13:35] kind of more in the media a bit and just I mean you've probably seen him a
[00:13:38] bit but yeah he's just awesome I hope
[00:13:41] his personality gets to shine here in the next few weeks because
[00:13:44] it's a very very easy personality to become a fan of so
[00:13:47] look think think of the type of person he is so we ask him when we're
[00:13:49] down there at spring training if you follow our instagram account you've
[00:13:52] probably seen it but I ask him an Auburn Tiger what he
[00:13:56] thinks overrated or underrated Alabama football and this man
[00:14:00] still says out of the nicest of his heart that he has the utmost respect
[00:14:04] for the University of Alabama football
[00:14:07] team and you know that clip got a few
[00:14:11] handfuls of thousands of views on his part and like
[00:14:14] an Auburn Tiger saying that what but it's like that's just who Ryan
[00:14:17] Bliss is that's like a short and small example but
[00:14:21] despite how nice he is he can come around to realize that
[00:14:25] Babe Ruth might not be all that he was hyped up to be
[00:14:29] that's true he did say that it was funny when you asked him the
[00:14:31] Alabama football question you gave him the question he goes ha
[00:14:35] he's like he's like oh I'm gonna have to give an answer to this
[00:14:38] so he's he's very genuine he's a again he's a very very easy
[00:14:43] personality to be a fan of so I hope you guys get to see a bunch
[00:14:46] of that in the next couple weeks because
[00:14:47] he's awesome genuinely he is awesome so shout out to Ryan Bliss keep it going
[00:14:54] we're rooting for him all right let's take a quick pause talk to

[00:16:32] as we transition to the second storyline here let's talk a little bit
[00:16:36] about George Kirby we haven't talked about him
[00:16:38] specifically in a segment much this year but I think it's about time we do
[00:16:42] a little bit of an evaluation on him because
[00:16:45] he's been up and down through the first two months he's had his good starts
[00:16:49] he's had his starts where he's gotten knocked around a bit his e.r.a. sits a
[00:16:52] little bit over four right now what do we think the issue is here
[00:16:56] and maybe issue is not the right way to put it but
[00:17:00] what hasn't been as crisp for George Kirby so far?
[00:17:04] The simplistic approach is he's given up too many home runs
[00:17:08] that's it he has given up seven home runs in his last four starts it's hard
[00:17:12] to win doing that not all of them have been
[00:17:15] solo homers either so if we're talking about the most
[00:17:19] basic reason why George Kirby and three of us in his last four starts
[00:17:23] were not good because he's given up too many long balls you cannot
[00:17:26] win games giving up multiple home runs in a start it is really
[00:17:30] really difficult for George to do that do you want to get on a more
[00:17:34] specific level? We have not seen the step forward
[00:17:38] with George Kirby's off-speed stuff and breaking stuff as
[00:17:41] we would have expected to see this season now that we have
[00:17:44] two months worth of George Kirby starts this season
[00:17:47] we can make a semi-decent evaluation on
[00:17:51] how his stuff has been so far we think we have a large enough sample
[00:17:54] to evaluate his pitches the pitch the pitch shapes
[00:17:58] and the pitch results and frankly his breaking balls have
[00:18:02] sucked this year they've sucked I wish I could use a softer term but
[00:18:08] no they have they have like legitimately have not been
[00:18:11] not been good at all he has second percentile breaking ball run value
[00:18:15] on baseball savant and on off-speed run value
[00:18:18] fourth percentile and again this is supposed to be a dude who's among the
[00:18:22] top 10 starters in baseball at his peak so to see those numbers
[00:18:27] are flabbergasting his slider is getting
[00:18:31] destroyed if you want to zone in on one pitch his slider was a
[00:18:35] really good pitch for him last year and it worked he threw it a decent amount
[00:18:38] kept guys off balance with it it's getting hit really hard this year
[00:18:42] and if you want to get into the specifics
[00:18:44] last year uh guys slug yeah last year 2023 guys slugged
[00:18:50] 377 against it he had a six run value really good
[00:18:53] pitch right now guys are slugging 667
[00:18:58] against the slider that's high it's getting
[00:19:01] it's legitimately getting destroyed right now so
[00:19:04] if you want to look at one specific there's a few reasons
[00:19:07] but if you want to zone in on an area of improvement for george kirby
[00:19:12] he's got to get that slider back because it's just it doesn't have the
[00:19:15] same effect right now as it did last year
[00:19:17] split two his split's not getting slugged as much but they have the same
[00:19:21] run value and then that's the pitch as we look
[00:19:26] at the other two splitters in this rotation
[00:19:29] devastating difference making pitches for both logan gilbert and brice miller
[00:19:33] it's been the exact opposite for george kirby it's just it has not been
[00:19:36] a valuable pitch for him at all he can't use it
[00:19:39] it doesn't have the effectiveness as those other pitches are
[00:19:42] and his curveball has not been good either so he legitimately
[00:19:46] if you look at his sinker and his four seam fastball both have been
[00:19:49] excellent pitches this year by run value
[00:19:51] his other three pitches have been subpar he has no outpitched to get
[00:19:56] himself out of situations and when you go too fastball heavy
[00:20:00] again at times you're going to get popped because either someone's going to
[00:20:04] hit one of your off-speed pitches that hasn't been very effective this
[00:20:07] season hasn't generated that much swing and miss
[00:20:10] or you're going to leave a fastball in the middle of the plate and
[00:20:12] eventually big league hitters are going to put the barrel on it
[00:20:15] hit it in the air and put it over the fence that's how that's that's
[00:20:18] what happens and we've seen that here this
[00:20:20] month like the only way george this season has gotten out of
[00:20:24] situations like this with some of his off-speed pitches is when he's had
[00:20:27] like a legit 80 grade fastball like when he
[00:20:30] pitched against the diamondbacks this year that was near 80 grade fastball
[00:20:34] where he's just pumping gas past guys
[00:20:36] but if he can't do that as we've seen in three of his last four
[00:20:40] starts he's struggling right and part of it is he doesn't
[00:20:46] have the swing and miss stuff that louise
[00:20:48] and logan have that's just not who he is as a pitcher at least not yet
[00:20:52] he pins as we know pinpoint command pounds the zone dots up the
[00:20:58] dots up the corners but he doesn't quite get the chase rate
[00:21:02] that guys like logan and louise get they don't he doesn't
[00:21:05] get the swing and miss that those guys get
[00:21:08] so what george has to do to be at his best
[00:21:11] is pound the zone and get weak contact
[00:21:15] but right now he's getting hit pretty hard so
[00:21:19] though yeah there's so like the filling up the zone and weak contact part
[00:21:23] yes but then like when he's not getting that swing it just like it's
[00:21:27] the worst it's a bad combination two hittable pitches in the strike
[00:21:31] zone that don't get swing and miss that
[00:21:35] so that that leads you that leads you open to more
[00:21:39] susceptible for more things and the the widths not even really average
[00:21:43] it's below average for most of his off-speed pitches he doesn't
[00:21:47] have his best strikeout pitch is his four seam fastball this year but
[00:21:50] outside of that if you break like his split only has a
[00:21:53] 19 percent strikeout rate his splitter that's supposed to be a
[00:21:57] strikeout pitch 19 percent you want to compare that to
[00:22:02] price right so the the numbers on george kirby's
[00:22:07] splitter he gets a whiff at 26 percent of the time
[00:22:10] he gets strikeouts at a 19 percent clip
[00:22:14] bryce gets whiffs at a 28 percent clip but strikeouts at a 38 percent clip
[00:22:20] like see see the like grand canyon size gap
[00:22:24] in getting an out between those two pitches
[00:22:29] it is it is hard when your out pitches
[00:22:32] don't actually get you out of anything so that's number one right
[00:22:35] so let's say his splitter his splitter is a big reason for
[00:22:38] this because his splitter was supposed to help him like we knew his
[00:22:41] slider could be was effective but it wasn't
[00:22:46] like perhaps not a game-changing sliders that is that fair
[00:22:50] yeah it was a good pitch it was not a game changer though
[00:22:53] sure it wasn't spencer strider's slider if that's what you mean
[00:22:57] right exactly the other the other thing
[00:23:00] so yeah so the splitter was supposed to be the pitch that the
[00:23:02] slider was not the splitter was supposed to take a jump that we've
[00:23:05] seen from logan and that we've seen from bryce and it has not
[00:23:08] but another thing that really shocked me about george he's really good
[00:23:12] around the edges of the strike zone they call that the shadow zone
[00:23:15] the shadow zone is one ball inside the strike zone and one ball outside of
[00:23:20] the strike zone if you you make that a box it's more of
[00:23:23] like i just took the line around the edge of the strike zone that's the
[00:23:26] shadow zone george kerbing his first two
[00:23:29] seasons excellent in the shadow zone and by
[00:23:32] excellent you can if you look hard enough you can find the numbers on
[00:23:34] baseball saman they're really good if you put a pitch on the shadow zone
[00:23:37] it's really hard for hitters to do anything with that pitch
[00:23:40] well his numbers are almost twice as bad this year on the
[00:23:44] shadow part of the zone so the pitches he puts
[00:23:47] on the on the pinpoint edges of the strike zone that are supposed to be
[00:23:52] ultra effective are not as effective this year and i
[00:23:54] mean drastically not as effective and it's hard for a pitcher if you are
[00:23:58] making your pitch and the and the batters are doing something
[00:24:01] with that pitch anyways so you could chalk that up to bad
[00:24:03] luck you could chalk it up to execution
[00:24:05] regardless when george kerby throws the pitches where he wants he's not getting
[00:24:10] the results he wants and that's probably because of his osprey
[00:24:14] pitches because hitters can sit on the pitches they
[00:24:16] know they can hit more than the other ones right i mean his
[00:24:20] barrel rate is 30 down from where it was a year ago
[00:24:24] that's a lot you talk about him getting hit harder
[00:24:26] that's a pretty big drop off paired with that he already doesn't
[00:24:30] really get the whiffs so look ultimately when you look at
[00:24:35] his expected numbers xera his fit his xfip it's all much lower than where his
[00:24:39] er is so despite all of this there are numbers that are saying george
[00:24:44] has gotten unlucky there is reason to expect he's gonna
[00:24:47] progress back to where the mean is but
[00:24:52] he he isn't quite looking like the guy that we've often tabbed has the
[00:24:56] highest upside of anybody in the rotation
[00:24:58] he like he still had his starts where he's been good it just hasn't
[00:25:02] looked like a sy young winner right no he's not looked like a sy young winner
[00:25:07] and i thought we i we thought in year three he would
[00:25:10] look like that and there's still a lot of time left in the season you still
[00:25:13] have four months left george could rip off a one er a over his next 20
[00:25:17] starts no one will remember this at all but as we look right now
[00:25:23] we're thinking of like year to year progression just
[00:25:27] haven't seen a whole lot not in the stuff department
[00:25:31] not in the stuff department there are other areas but in the actual
[00:25:34] stuff and what you and i have talked about
[00:25:38] like what the next step for george kirby is is having a strikeout pitch
[00:25:41] when he needs it he still doesn't it's his strikeout
[00:25:45] pitches this fastball we were thinking something besides the fastball
[00:25:49] one pitch besides the fastball that you can go to
[00:25:52] to get a swing and a miss and we still don't see it
[00:25:55] right we can't do much more about this than speculate
[00:25:59] because we don't have the medical information obviously but
[00:26:03] you do wonder if if part of it is the knee thing that keeps getting brought
[00:26:07] up yeah could be that would make sense
[00:26:09] right we don't know we can't do anything more than speculate but you
[00:26:12] just wonder yeah so it could be the knee yeah so
[00:26:17] we'll we'll have to see um it's in such a
[00:26:21] drastic change in the month of may after having a
[00:26:25] pretty pretty darn good april time old time we'll have to tell for
[00:26:29] george kirby but as we know he's if he was actually hurt he would
[00:26:34] probably not be pitching like actually hurt to to to break down
[00:26:40] he that wouldn't happen and the funny thing about all this is right in
[00:26:43] between all these bad starts he had a really awesome start that you and i
[00:26:46] were there to see against the royals he was dominant as ever against a
[00:26:49] very good royals team by the way so i don't know sometimes baseball's
[00:26:54] baseball's random and sometimes it could just be we sit here
[00:26:58] and speculate all this time and it could just be the fact he gave up
[00:27:01] seven home runs when he shouldn't have given up seven what if you only gave
[00:27:04] up four home runs instead of seven and he would instead of one all four
[00:27:08] of his starts because you take three home runs away
[00:27:11] and the game looks a whole lot different right yeah that's true
[00:27:15] hopefully he turns it around because the mariners need them they need them
[00:27:18] very very much yeah you know i liked the
[00:27:22] so we had mike ryan ruiz on who you'll hear from here in a little bit
[00:27:26] it's a different kind of interview right because we usually strive to
[00:27:29] interview the the experts people who know something
[00:27:33] beyond us that we want to dive into their
[00:27:36] interesting story and we want to hear them
[00:27:38] their perspective on this mariners team well mike ryan lial
[00:27:43] has um like he's a brand new mariner fan
[00:27:48] a very notable figure in the sports community he's the longtime executive
[00:27:51] producer of the dan lebatard show formerly on espn
[00:27:54] now metal arc media and they're on this their this own adventure with metal
[00:27:58] arc media of of uh they're a media startup they're
[00:28:02] they're trying to work their way in this new world and
[00:28:06] mike ryan acknowledges you know baseball is not a not a big part of
[00:28:10] what they do but it's a big part of who he is
[00:28:14] and he wanted a new baseball team and mina kimes helped and floated
[00:28:19] out hey she root for the mariners and
[00:28:21] like ryan thought about it and was like yeah let's root for the mariners so now
[00:28:25] he is part of the mariners community and we thought
[00:28:28] what better way to welcome them on than to have them on the podcast
[00:28:32] it was great this this was one of my favorite conversations we've done to
[00:28:35] be honest with you and it's very free flowing
[00:28:38] just feels like three people talking and for anybody out there that
[00:28:41] might either i'm guessing if you listen to this podcast you're probably
[00:28:46] a big mariner fan but if you have friends out there
[00:28:48] that aren't and need a reason to get into baseball
[00:28:51] and the mariners have them listen to this interview with mike ryan ruiz
[00:28:54] because he's new to the mariners just like
[00:28:56] everybody else is and he's learning as he goes about what makes the team
[00:29:00] fun what makes the team unique what parts are frustrating as as we go
[00:29:05] along here but super fun conversation like again
[00:29:09] just very much three people going back and forth
[00:29:11] spitball and ideas i think you guys are going to enjoy this
[00:29:15] i mean it when i say this is one of my favorite ones we've done
[00:29:17] and if you're not sold on this team already well i think mike ryan will help
[00:29:21] sell you on it because he's having a lot of fun
[00:29:23] watching this baseball team let's get to our conversation with mike ryan
[00:29:26] ruiz we welcome on mike ryan ruiz you know
[00:29:33] him from the dan lebatard show he's the executive producer at
[00:29:36] metal lark media and the newest notable mariner fan
[00:29:41] mike ryan welcome in and just got to start it off how is life as a
[00:29:47] newly minted mariner fan life is good right now i think i picked
[00:29:50] a good year to just jump aboard the bandwagon treading up everybody treading
[00:29:54] up look i'm a i'm a south florida sports fan
[00:29:59] and that uh i support the miami heat i support
[00:30:01] inter miami and i support the florida panthers when baseball season
[00:30:04] started all of them were kind of playing varying degrees of
[00:30:07] important games right now the panthers i love my ice cats
[00:30:12] a day one fan of theirs but uh it's exciting to know that uh this baseball
[00:30:18] team that i it started as a bit now i legitimately
[00:30:22] attach some affinity to they're starting to starting to play well
[00:30:26] and i the last time baseball made me feel really anything was the early 2000s
[00:30:34] uh back when i was a marlins fan we can talk a little bit about that but
[00:30:38] that franchise betrayed me one too many times
[00:30:42] and then i just found it easy to cut off the sport
[00:30:45] as analytics got more and more involved and made the game less
[00:30:50] aesthetically pleasing as the franchise just did more
[00:30:53] and more locally to push me away from the sport
[00:30:56] i realized maybe baseball's not for me anymore
[00:31:00] but baseball to its credit takes a lot of the things that
[00:31:03] i took issue with i wanted to give it a real chance and i realized
[00:31:07] i tried that last year but i didn't have a rooting interest i don't feel anything
[00:31:11] for the marlins laundry i don't feel anything for that building
[00:31:13] i hate that it's there because i'm a huge miami hurricanes guy and it just
[00:31:16] represents what used to be there so i realized i needed a rooting
[00:31:20] interest so i hopped on a random team
[00:31:23] generator and we were i talked to some friends
[00:31:27] beforehand about hey i'm thinking about just throwing
[00:31:30] myself into a fandom of whatever team randomly pops up and a few of
[00:31:35] them said well hopefully you get a team like the diamondbacks or a team
[00:31:38] like the the seattle mariners because they're they're up and coming and they
[00:31:42] got a really exciting rotation and they got a really
[00:31:45] exciting outfield there over there that i think
[00:31:49] you'd like so i'm like cool and sure enough they came up and
[00:31:54] this was actually pretty easy for me to to jump in because
[00:31:58] as any 90s kid i certainly had my mariners phase
[00:32:02] i can talk about those 90s mariners teams as if they were my own
[00:32:06] because when they popped up on esv and baseball or
[00:32:10] several video games they have everyone knows coolest
[00:32:13] coolest logo coolest uniforms coolest players
[00:32:17] to to play for them it was a very easy team to root for
[00:32:20] when when you were a kid so i'm liking the natural fit
[00:32:24] not liking the 10-05 10-30s not not necessarily digging that i'm
[00:32:29] really enjoying this recent east coast swing that's allowed me to get a little
[00:32:33] bit more in depth especially on getaway days when they're playing
[00:32:37] middle of the afternoon with none of the other teams
[00:32:40] going up against it i feel like i've hijacked your show
[00:32:43] and i'm sorry about that i just get super excited when i talk about my
[00:32:46] life this is for you to talk not us people can listen to us talk the
[00:32:50] rest of the rest of the podcast yeah but i'm enjoying it and one thing
[00:32:54] that has actually proved proved to be true
[00:32:57] and that people undersold was everyone told me that this was going to be a
[00:33:01] good rotation they undersold it somehow this might be if they actually
[00:33:05] end up finishing this story this could be an all-timer yeah yeah
[00:33:11] oh i will say though to your point about not liking the 10-05 starts
[00:33:15] so we can agree the west coast is the best time zone to watch sports
[00:33:19] yeah i'm jealous of you guys no doubt
[00:33:21] um frequenting the west coast i've only been to seattle like twice
[00:33:26] but uh it is a charmed existence out there
[00:33:31] you guys haven't really labored through all that many
[00:33:34] 130 a.m finishes your local time it's you know there are times that
[00:33:40] i'm sitting in my bed with my eyes being heavy wondering what why am i
[00:33:44] doing all of this we don't necessarily talk mariners baseball on my
[00:33:47] show i'm just doing this as a bit to see
[00:33:51] if i can get back into the sport and what i found out is the sports
[00:33:55] vine i've watched a couple of dodgers games how can you not be
[00:33:59] kind of sucked in by that incredible lineup but
[00:34:02] more than anything i like the the mariners broadcast
[00:34:06] and i see things done on mariners broadcasts that i don't necessarily see
[00:34:10] done on others i don't know who the
[00:34:12] cinematographer is for these games but that sweeping shot across a third
[00:34:16] base line that has become such a signature
[00:34:19] shot i don't see that anywhere else i'm not seeing that in national
[00:34:23] broadcast the game even if it's on mute and trust me i've had plenty mariners
[00:34:27] games on mute it's aesthetically pleasing there's
[00:34:30] just there is a comfort that i didn't anticipate in seeing those mariners
[00:34:34] uniforms that have gone relatively unchanged in terms of
[00:34:37] the traditional look since i i started paying attention to them
[00:34:41] in the 90s um it's especially when you have the golden
[00:34:45] hour over at t-mobile park and the
[00:34:48] lighting hits just right it's it's really pleasing to look at
[00:34:53] so i believe they call it the fly cam and you're right they don't have it a
[00:34:56] ton of other places i don't know why they don't but
[00:34:59] people i remember when they first unveiled it i saw national people
[00:35:02] seeing those highlights on twitter with that camera angle and they were
[00:35:05] like oh this is awesome they said this this camera angle is sick
[00:35:08] yeah i i'm still watching it in awe wondering why where has this been
[00:35:15] is this a new thing why why isn't anyone else talking about this
[00:35:19] and one thing that i'll say outside of the broadcasts and the uniforms
[00:35:25] uh that i find aesthetically pleasing is
[00:35:29] the trident celebration is so rad it's such a cool prop
[00:35:33] and the guys on the team seem genuinely i don't i don't really know
[00:35:37] them from adam but they seem like easy dudes to root
[00:35:40] for and and it's not unlike those 90s
[00:35:44] teams even though there were some jerks on that team there were
[00:35:46] characters and i don't know if it's something
[00:35:49] about scott surface or or maybe just the star players on this
[00:35:52] team that that have an infectious personality but this seems fun it
[00:35:58] it embraces a lot of the things that turned you on
[00:36:02] to the game that just remind you of you know corey league having fun with
[00:36:06] your friends these guys really seem to enjoy playing
[00:36:08] the game it's an easy bunch to root for you mentioned to us
[00:36:12] before we hit record of you know you're new into into the seattle
[00:36:17] mariners world how much have you tried so you've tried to
[00:36:20] familiar yourself familiarize yourself with the current
[00:36:23] roster how much else like in past years have you tried to go look at
[00:36:27] and dig up and and learn a little bit more about the
[00:36:29] community or you're you're jumping into well the
[00:36:32] community is a is a new exciting aspect of it because
[00:36:35] when i i was following mariners baseball and i did love mariners
[00:36:38] baseball like any like i said you you saw that backwards cap you
[00:36:42] saw that swing everybody had him as your favorite
[00:36:45] as their favorite baseball player but also locally alex rodriguez
[00:36:49] like i was familiar with alex the local papers were following
[00:36:53] alex rodriguez throughout high school he went to high school called west
[00:36:56] minster which is a sone's throw away from my
[00:36:59] home i got to know him a little bit when i was younger
[00:37:02] a little bit after he had left seattle
[00:37:06] um random he married my wife's cousin
[00:37:10] uh but yeah so but but this was after the mariners stuff but i
[00:37:15] it's weird but i've always kind of had this strange
[00:37:20] mariners tether around so i know a lot about those
[00:37:23] those older teams i was watching on tv when they went up against the
[00:37:28] the yankees and had that historic upset
[00:37:31] i i could randomly walk through a happy hour walk up to one of my
[00:37:36] friends and just whisper in their ears
[00:37:38] jay muner and get a reaction yeah they had great characters
[00:37:43] so yeah i i i know quite a bit and i still surprise myself again
[00:37:50] thank i guess for the purposes of this interview
[00:37:53] the time that i stopped paying attention to baseball was really like
[00:37:56] the big lull for for the seattle mariners in terms
[00:38:00] of being relevant all season long so maybe i
[00:38:05] was a problem maybe maybe me going away from the sport is what the
[00:38:08] the mariners were missing and if we do end up finishing this ride with a
[00:38:12] world championship do believe that i'm going to take all the credit for it
[00:38:17] i have i have two questions for you here number one was that your little
[00:38:21] subtle way of saying my wife's cousin is j lo about a rod
[00:38:24] no it's not it's not j lo is it okay yeah no my my wife's name is cynthia
[00:38:28] you can piece that one together okay okay okay i i figured that the
[00:38:32] answer was no to that i just thought i'd still throw it in there
[00:38:34] it's like well married a rod it's like well
[00:38:36] no i'm cuban no but uh no there's a greek side of the family
[00:38:40] i that's a little odd i don't like to really talk about it all that much it
[00:38:44] is somewhat canon for for our show but it's just a it's just a means to say
[00:38:49] that i've had this weird connection i played
[00:38:52] for the mariners in little league i just i played ken griffey jr
[00:38:58] baseball non-stop i've always been i listened to all the
[00:39:03] podcasts uh on the prodigy podcast about ken griffey jr
[00:39:07] i just have an affinity for those 90s mariners so
[00:39:11] it's jumping back into it and seeing their name pop up first on that random
[00:39:15] team generator i was like yo i can do this i can heat
[00:39:19] this one up no problem because i kind of was a mariners fan when i was a
[00:39:22] kid so this is all good so that was my second question here
[00:39:26] for you is the way you became a new mariner fan so to speak or i
[00:39:31] guess a mariners fan again is it just from the simulator paired
[00:39:35] with you used to like them in the 90s i thought i heard something you can tell
[00:39:38] me if this is wrong about mina kheim's trying to convince
[00:39:41] you if you're going to pick a team pick the mariners yes she tried to
[00:39:44] recruit me she she did because i i think i ran it by her then i'm like
[00:39:48] yeah i want to get into baseball i know the mariners had the run last
[00:39:51] year that was exciting and she loves the mariners and she just told
[00:39:55] me you should be a mariners fan you should be a mariners fan
[00:39:57] i had two people say like uh the mariners would be the team to
[00:40:02] go with one of them was a passionate fan the other one was a red sox fan
[00:40:06] but yeah you'd be so lucky if it were the mariners and
[00:40:09] once mariners came up i was like oh this is great i could talk with my
[00:40:13] friend mina about mariners baseball she immediately threw me into a
[00:40:16] mariners group chat that has a perfect amount of volume
[00:40:20] it's not like some of my other psycho group chats i like the psycho
[00:40:24] stuff too i'm a bit of a sicko there i'm one of the more active
[00:40:26] people in this mariners group chat um but uh i i love it because
[00:40:32] i think group chats are are basically textbooks
[00:40:35] it's a modern day textbook i'd like to get in as many
[00:40:39] random group chats that are dedicated to a sole
[00:40:42] topic because i feel like that's the true way i can i can follow them
[00:40:46] because if i'm traveling there there's been a couple of stretches this
[00:40:50] season where look there's just a week here where i can't watch i
[00:40:54] just straight up can't watch they're all 10 30 games
[00:40:56] i'm gonna have to be a box score fan this week and
[00:41:00] the group chat keeps me updated on on the the daily
[00:41:03] goings-on so i i there's really as soon as i put on the internet that
[00:41:10] the mariners came up there i was really surprised by the amount of
[00:41:16] traffic that got inside of mariners social media and all the accounts
[00:41:21] you guys reaching out and a bunch of people reaching out asking me to be on
[00:41:24] podcasts i'm like what like i haven't achieved anything yet
[00:41:27] guys this is a bit like to me this is all this is all kind of dumb
[00:41:31] but then the more people took it seriously it was like well i guess
[00:41:35] i guess i really have to practice what i preach i have to really get
[00:41:38] invested and a funny thing happened the team
[00:41:41] wasn't miserable and it wasn't laborious to follow
[00:41:45] i know we got off to an uneven start but the division was weak
[00:41:49] and it seems as though the mariners have settled in to the point that i'm
[00:41:53] looking at these yankees games i'm seeing a possible alcs preview here
[00:41:56] boys what did you notice when you when you saw the the
[00:42:01] factions of of online mariners fans coming into your replies and dms what
[00:42:05] like was it the positive side was it the
[00:42:08] negative side because lana can can peel back the onion and tell you all
[00:42:11] about what really is and isn't with online mariners fans i just
[00:42:15] want to get your first impression of of the type of person you saw
[00:42:19] interacting with you look every every franchise even the
[00:42:23] most successful ones have their their tortured fan segments like oh you
[00:42:28] you know sadness but you don't you don't know oklahoma city
[00:42:32] thunder sadness like come on guys really like like
[00:42:36] let's relax
[00:42:41] i'm sorry i wasn't planning i was just picking a random team out there that
[00:42:44] didn't have much history but every fan fan group thinks
[00:42:48] that their amount of torture is the worst but no you guys are
[00:42:52] really tortured you guys are are you have a pretty cool i don't know if
[00:42:57] it's because of the pacific northwest and then
[00:42:59] the days are so drab that you're you're conditioned to this life of
[00:43:03] misery but you guys are generally upbeat
[00:43:06] about what's staring down at you like the barrel
[00:43:09] of a gun in that yeah the vibes are good right now
[00:43:12] but you you just watch it's gonna it's gonna end in misery
[00:43:17] this seems they they celebrate with an actual trident
[00:43:21] there is no misery attached to this team there there is there is none and but i
[00:43:26] i keep being warned that the shoe will drop and inevitably the misery will
[00:43:30] settle in and that everything that i'm
[00:43:33] experiencing right now is actually just a setup for the
[00:43:37] misery and i gotta tell you i'm around i'm not feeling misery here
[00:43:41] this is our year say goodbye to your credit card
[00:43:45] rewards greedy corporate megastores led by walmart and target are pushing
[00:43:49] for a law in congress to take away your hard-earned cash back and travel
[00:43:53] points to line their pockets the durban marshal credit
[00:43:57] card bill would enact harmful credit card routing mandates that would end
[00:44:01] credit card rewards as we know it if you love your credit card rewards
[00:44:05] tell your lawmakers hands off my rewards tell them to oppose
[00:44:09] the durban marshal credit card bill this is this i was gonna say this is
[00:44:15] a nice perspective for the two of us especially
[00:44:17] for two people who truly live by it and die by it just about every day of our
[00:44:22] lives for i don't even know how many years basically as long as i can
[00:44:24] remember baseball how do you do that with baseball like
[00:44:27] there's games every day you live and die with mariners results
[00:44:34] like i can understand like nfl like uh that's a 16th of our season that
[00:44:38] just went away like come on yeah well we live live in an area of
[00:44:44] the country until like three years ago didn't have a hockey
[00:44:47] team and hasn't had an nba team in 15 years like
[00:44:50] during the summer the spring summer and early fall months like this is it
[00:44:55] there's nothing there's nothing like there's no
[00:44:58] since the nfl is such a humongous outlier of everything like that's
[00:45:02] almost a given at this point where we need something a little bit
[00:45:05] more personal to attach to yeah i guess i should have considered
[00:45:08] that um that's a that's a blind spot by me but yeah you didn't really
[00:45:12] have up until recently uh you didn't have
[00:45:15] many other games in town i'm lumping in the sounders in there because the
[00:45:18] sounders yeah have had a pretty charmed existence
[00:45:21] since getting to mls but uh yeah no that's why
[00:45:24] it seems a little disproportionate to me i guess it's because
[00:45:28] it's almost as if like you take the 25 percent allotted fan width that you
[00:45:32] now have for the seattle kraken but it didn't exist for anybody so
[00:45:36] you just had that all focus that leftover bandwidth focus hyper focus
[00:45:41] on the mariners so everything just felt a little bit more extreme
[00:45:45] but yeah one thing the one thing that's really jumped out at me
[00:45:49] is how upbeat people are about the misery that is coming their way
[00:45:55] this is like this is it happens to us so often
[00:45:59] it's kind of like the lovable losers thing only you guys
[00:46:03] seem to just again it might be the the
[00:46:06] pacific northwest hippie and you guys but you guys are pretty chill
[00:46:09] about your lives being destroyed in a couple
[00:46:12] of months which i i'm enjoying well get used to it yeah i also want
[00:46:18] to ask too because as people who haven't had a basketball team in their
[00:46:20] hometown in 20 years now are close to it
[00:46:23] you say how do people live and die by baseball games every day with so many
[00:46:27] games i've got a question to throw back
[00:46:29] at you as somebody who's a big basketball guy
[00:46:32] how do you live and die by nba games because isn't it like how i feel
[00:46:35] about it is regular season's predictable you've now
[00:46:38] got maximum of 20 teams that can get into the playoffs every year
[00:46:41] like is it like i don't know is do people live and die by nba games in
[00:46:46] the regular season still because it feels like it would be hard to do that
[00:46:49] uh i don't i don't there are certain things
[00:46:52] there is nothing in my sports fandom outside of maybe
[00:46:56] the university miami yet i don't have unfortunately
[00:46:59] many connection points to them playing games of relevance
[00:47:03] in terms of sports fandom and the height of vitriol
[00:47:07] hate and emotional investment there was nothing quite
[00:47:10] in my life like the the lebron duane wade chris bosh miami heat
[00:47:14] sure everybody even people probably in your listening audience
[00:47:18] had a passionate opinion about that team
[00:47:22] you woke up you rolled out of bed you went to the bathroom you
[00:47:25] scrolled twitter you were in a fight for your lives
[00:47:28] because it wasn't just about basketball it was about you not
[00:47:31] deserving this thing it was about fans leaving games early
[00:47:34] and and my fandom is better than your fandom and it was just all
[00:47:38] insane when you look back on it there's a bit of a flash in the pan
[00:47:42] but i can detail like regular season games against the grizzlies that felt
[00:47:47] like the entire blueprint of that franchise was was on the
[00:47:50] line so that is always like my comparison
[00:47:53] point for it even now when the miami heat who've been to
[00:47:57] to nba finals since lebron left one one against lebron it doesn't
[00:48:03] and it doesn't feel that way it doesn't feel that way the only thing
[00:48:07] in my life that has matched that level of intensity
[00:48:11] is playoff hockey as i'm wearing my florida panthers original seven
[00:48:15] uh faux polo that as you can tell by the inner lining just totally took me
[00:48:19] for a ride don't order things on instagram
[00:48:22] don't just don't ever do that playoff hockey
[00:48:25] and you guys got what a termed existence your hockey team had
[00:48:29] by the way uh just your second year of existing you eliminate the reigning
[00:48:34] san li cub champions because valentiy chushkin wants to party
[00:48:37] but uh you you realize in playing those games
[00:48:41] when you get to overtime and elimination games
[00:48:45] as you guys play you're the entire balance of your season the hopes and
[00:48:49] dreams of sacrifice the good what those guys play through
[00:48:52] the emotion of it all it can end with a bounce of a
[00:48:57] puck that is on ice as guys are skating on
[00:49:00] like it's just it is such an insane sport that gives so much physically you can't
[00:49:06] look at your phone during the game it's not
[00:49:08] it's another theory that i have that the smartphone also really hurt
[00:49:11] baseball and that there's so much downtime in between
[00:49:14] you kind of can disconnect from the actual experience whereas hockey
[00:49:18] if you look down for a second you might miss
[00:49:22] your team's season end or continue on so playoff hockey i've really
[00:49:27] i've it's kind of like chasing the dragon the first high of heroin i've
[00:49:31] been chasing that lebron james big three emotional investment
[00:49:35] get me back to those highs and right now the closest thing that i have to
[00:49:39] it is hockey but playoff baseball as i
[00:49:41] remember from 2003 when i was a marlins fan
[00:49:44] that's got its own unique drama and that's where the pauses and the
[00:49:47] natural breaks in the action actually lend itself to the drama you
[00:49:52] can actually hear those whispers and those ghosts
[00:49:55] that you see torment you and become the little nagging thought
[00:50:00] that you have three outs in two outs into an inning
[00:50:05] all of a sudden become obsessive and it's all that you see and i do like
[00:50:08] that about postseason baseball i haven't had that feeling in over
[00:50:11] 20 years now it was the same thing for us mike
[00:50:14] ryan like we lil and i's waking memory we've seen five
[00:50:18] playoff games five total and i will say that are the small sample size
[00:50:22] we've had equally as intense imagine sitting in a baseball stadium for 18
[00:50:27] innings seeing your team score no runs
[00:50:31] well you know the last calls in the seventh inning and you have to 11 more
[00:50:35] innings until the game's actually over
[00:50:38] right just the feeling of that i think is is really unmatched and like
[00:50:41] he said different from uh different from hockey i do want to
[00:50:44] ask you though mariners are in town in miami as
[00:50:48] of recording this exactly a month from now what's that feeling
[00:50:52] going to be like watching your new team against your old team
[00:50:56] in in your home state i feel zero connection
[00:51:00] to the miami marlins i struggle calling them the miami marlins
[00:51:04] uh from the uniforms the only time i ever like
[00:51:08] maybe had a little twinkle in my eye was last year they did these throwback
[00:51:12] fridays and i saw like the old uniforms i'm
[00:51:15] like there that's what i'm missing a connection it's been such a transient
[00:51:19] franchise anytime that you start loving a player they get jettisoned off
[00:51:24] there there's no king felix's in the history of this franchise
[00:51:28] no one's allowed to play their entire career
[00:51:31] even when they're not really mattering is in terms of like doing
[00:51:34] some real real winning they don't get to have these
[00:51:39] long runs in this franchise the ownership's changed since then they've
[00:51:42] had multiple fire sales more broken promises
[00:51:45] so when it comes to the marlins i actually like low-key
[00:51:48] kind of root against them just not and it's not an overt thing it's
[00:51:53] it's all subconscious like i carry such resentment for what's
[00:51:58] what they forced upon my baseball fandom they
[00:52:01] killed my passion for that sport by moving into that building you
[00:52:05] i was one of those public voices using our show saying we gotta get
[00:52:08] them a ballpark we gotta save baseball on this market i want to
[00:52:12] take my kids to this ballpark i want to be able to develop a star
[00:52:16] and keep them and before i could finish that sentence
[00:52:19] they they traded everybody and i was
[00:52:22] taken for a ride so i'm just happy i get to see the marines
[00:52:27] i in terms of connection to laundry i got way more connection to the
[00:52:30] mariners laundry than i do in the the marlins and no i it's not
[00:52:35] like i get to i'm not i do like to troll boston
[00:52:38] self-expense so i'm not gonna say i'm not a troll because
[00:52:41] what i do is largely performative but so what am i
[00:52:44] what am i gonna get at who am i gonna tease at marlins games
[00:52:48] i might walk out of there with three foul balls that i'll just casually walk
[00:52:51] to right so are you going to any of these
[00:52:54] mariners games when they're in town yeah
[00:52:56] yes i intend on doing that everything is um
[00:52:59] all everything is riding on what happens with the florida panthers
[00:53:03] i may be on a bender because we've won the cup i may be on a bender
[00:53:07] because we've lost the cup but everything in my life is literally
[00:53:11] week to week dependent on what's going on with the
[00:53:14] florida panthers right now including my my baseball watching habits
[00:53:17] uh i've actually enjoyed this longer break in between panthers games
[00:53:21] because the mariners are on the east coast and
[00:53:23] they're playing a really good team in the new york yankees and i'm
[00:53:28] getting to watch them in ways and throw myself emotionally into them
[00:53:31] in ways that i haven't but i will in all likelihood i'm trying
[00:53:36] to make it to all those games against the marlins to really further
[00:53:40] ingratiate myself because i imagine there's going to be some
[00:53:43] i do know in town there are a couple of mariners fans a lot of people are
[00:53:47] kind of like me they have this national recognition
[00:53:50] because because of everything that i articulated
[00:53:53] earlier in the 90s jr so you so i know florida gets a wrap for
[00:53:59] not being great baseball fans but it it seems
[00:54:03] like talking to you about this and knowing some some other people from
[00:54:07] florida it's it's more the fault of the marlins
[00:54:10] themselves that the baseball culture is this way
[00:54:14] opposed to just like there's just better things to do in miami
[00:54:19] yeah i mean there there is an element of that there are better
[00:54:22] things to do in miami again like while i'm into this mariner
[00:54:26] season hey you know i have to really force
[00:54:29] the issue sometimes baseball can be a plotting game
[00:54:32] but i like college baseball i go to a ton of miami hurricanes baseball games
[00:54:36] i think you're letting major league baseball off easy when you put all of
[00:54:40] this on the marlins they knew that they had a new
[00:54:43] ownership group coming in that was spelling but that was going to
[00:54:46] spend well above what they could actually afford
[00:54:49] and as soon as they got ownership of the team
[00:54:53] they started jettisoning small uh huge star players because they realized
[00:54:57] we're actually much smaller operation than what we paid for
[00:55:01] so major league baseball didn't care about that major league baseball
[00:55:04] didn't care about what they planned to do with the franchise after they bought
[00:55:07] it they were all about establishing a new high water mark
[00:55:10] for a franchise just so the next one that goes goes for
[00:55:13] another uh amount of money that tops that one
[00:55:18] so i think major league baseball is actually really to blame here for
[00:55:21] what's happened yes miami's had mismanagement from jeffrey
[00:55:24] laurea on down to where we're at loads betrayals i'm not going to let
[00:55:29] them completely off the hook but i'm not going to ignore
[00:55:31] major league baseball's culpability here and it's a shame because you guys
[00:55:34] have watched the world baseball classic
[00:55:36] those crowds they exist they're all here they're not we're not
[00:55:41] we're not busing them in like they're these are people that have a
[00:55:44] passion for baseball and they have a connection to their
[00:55:48] country they don't have a connection to the
[00:55:51] players you you can talk about roster
[00:55:54] construction or what have you but i know there are baseball fans here i
[00:55:57] know this to be a really good baseball market i know people are passionate
[00:56:00] about the game but i know a lot of people feel betrayed by the franchise
[00:56:03] like like i've been so it sounds like i was
[00:56:07] wondering when in time the marlins lost you it sounds
[00:56:11] like i was wondering when you said all the trades if it was
[00:56:13] during the jeter era when they traded yellets they traded stan that
[00:56:16] sounds like it was way before that around there was a josh johnson
[00:56:19] trade and was actually randomly it was a trade that they won
[00:56:22] with with toronto they traded burley they traded jose reyes they traded
[00:56:25] josh johnson and they got back some guys that
[00:56:28] actually did bolster their their minor league roster and
[00:56:32] like i said if you look back on it they probably won that trade but i
[00:56:35] thought it was such a shit message to to send to everybody they just
[00:56:38] jettisoned a bunch of star players they made a big splash at the winter
[00:56:41] meetings and you actually bought it hook line
[00:56:45] and sinker like oh we got them the stadium this is
[00:56:47] they said that we couldn't actually compete and and get these marquee
[00:56:50] players here because they didn't have their own stadium so
[00:56:53] we've got taxpayers to pay for their stadium they got one for free
[00:56:57] now we're in we're we finally arrived boys we can be one of the marquee
[00:57:00] franchises and like i said before you can finish that sentence
[00:57:03] everybody was gone and you had a bunch of names that you didn't recognize
[00:57:06] playing for your team in a uniform that was garish uh oh
[00:57:10] sorry i don't like the park oh i don't like the park it doesn't
[00:57:14] have character i've been uh when it was safe go um and i like
[00:57:17] the apple there's a good part it's gotten better we love it quality
[00:57:22] sports district really yeah i'm like here's a fun question here's a fun
[00:57:27] question for you of the games you have watched so far
[00:57:31] this year not named julio rodriguez is there a guy that you've loved
[00:57:34] watching on this big dumper love it big favor yeah cal's on my
[00:57:39] fantasy team i i drafted cal and i i think that you know one thing that
[00:57:45] maybe gets talked about but again i the only connection that i have with
[00:57:49] fan base is what i see on social media and my mariners group chat i don't hear
[00:57:54] people in casual conversation talk about his
[00:57:56] ability to manage his staff but i don't think you can you i don't
[00:58:00] think you can talk about the success of the pitching rotations that without
[00:58:03] him and you know he's a big guy he'll
[00:58:05] occasionally hit a bomb his nickname is big dumper
[00:58:08] it's not one of the first things that you want to talk about it's not
[00:58:10] super sexy but i think he's done a masterful job
[00:58:13] with this staff um and it's been it's not the easiest staff to manage
[00:58:17] because there's a lot of arms here that you're trying to protect
[00:58:20] i know that they've they've been careful uh with curvings also my fantasy team
[00:58:25] but big dumper how can you not just totally fall in love with the dude
[00:58:28] by the name of big dumper and he happens to be having like a
[00:58:32] nice little season he's stepping up in big moments so i really like him
[00:58:36] uh but for me outside of j rod and big dumper it's mostly about this
[00:58:42] rotation and i didn't think pitching would be all that interesting to me
[00:58:47] i know that there have been some good staffs in mariners past but
[00:58:51] when i became a mariners fan i was just thinking you know
[00:58:54] offense offense offense and that hasn't really come to fruition
[00:58:58] although i hope that we can add a couple of bats here at the
[00:59:01] deadline how it it sounds like toronto realizes
[00:59:06] they've maximized what they could do with that roster
[00:59:08] there's a couple names on that roster i think would fit quite nicely in with
[00:59:12] seattle because i do think that seattle is
[00:59:14] not just a bat away like certainly a big bat away but they could also use a
[00:59:19] little bit more depth in positions two more bats when you
[00:59:23] couple that with this bullpen and this rotation
[00:59:26] this is you can legitimately talk world series
[00:59:30] with the seattle mariners it's gotta be super exciting for you guys
[00:59:33] yeah i gotta tell you you don't you don't sound like a new fan with
[00:59:36] these takes about cal managing the pitching staff the
[00:59:39] rotation being good you talking about them needing to add
[00:59:41] a big bat at the deadline like this is these are all the talking points
[00:59:45] that mariners people are bringing up on a daily basis so you're either
[00:59:48] really tuned in or you're just or i know how to fake it well
[00:59:52] i think your ball no yeah well it's a it's a combination of knowing how to
[00:59:57] fake it uh being on like sports radio for
[00:59:59] 20 years but no i've watched these things are these things pop off the
[01:00:02] screen a little bit trust me there was a pretty laborious
[01:00:06] stretch of offense that was like what did i get myself into
[01:00:09] earlier on in the season where i'm like can we get
[01:00:13] feel like teteese he looks fun let's get
[01:00:16] what is what is i kept googling what what trout situation was
[01:00:20] would he accept a trade to a division rival like they needed
[01:00:24] something and j ride also like struggle out the gates too
[01:00:29] and like the main selling point that everybody told me is like oh this
[01:00:32] guy plays the game so fantastic and i've seen
[01:00:34] seen it in glimpses and i think he's coming online more and more i
[01:00:37] think we can all agree he hasn't necessarily hit his stride i'm like
[01:00:40] waiting for like his style of play that was sold to me is like this really
[01:00:44] infectious style of play to sink its hooks into me
[01:00:46] and drag me in i see it there i see the seeds there
[01:00:49] but uh i want a few more tridents too the trident is just so damn cool
[01:00:54] so i need more people to hit the ball out of the park so i can see the
[01:00:57] try a little bit more sure this is like a really fun
[01:01:01] baseball conversation like i really like i love
[01:01:04] the ideas that are getting thrown out here and just all of this and i'll tie
[01:01:07] this back to what you do on a day-to-day basis mike ryan because
[01:01:10] you're now the executive producer of metalark media and you worked on
[01:01:14] the lebatard show still up here on there you're on there this morning
[01:01:17] for for a long a long long time and you said you guys don't like talk
[01:01:20] about baseball all that much on that show and overall
[01:01:24] in that company it sounds like does baseball have a future there for
[01:01:28] like the vision you guys see in the in the future of
[01:01:31] you know trying to like push baseball more to the
[01:01:35] forefront because as we see it as as mariners fans doing this podcast we
[01:01:39] feel like it's part of our job to usher in a new era of baseball fans
[01:01:43] that we felt might have been left behind with
[01:01:46] the mariners being so bad for so long do you so do you see that as
[01:01:50] a potential thing for your future at your company you mean in terms of
[01:01:54] like scouting media as a media company
[01:01:57] scouting like with potential properties we've tried a couple of different
[01:02:03] stabs in baseball baseball is a curious
[01:02:06] curious thing while there's some encouraging
[01:02:09] numbers it would support that would support like no
[01:02:12] the arrows actually pointing up here there there's also some concerning
[01:02:16] metrics and this isn't necessarily like it's great to see your youthful
[01:02:19] enthusiasm and the fact that you guys have only seen five playoff games
[01:02:23] equal parts adorable but also sad you guys are an outlier you see the guys
[01:02:29] talking about that sport and their legacy names
[01:02:33] and the median age in this sport it's a lot closer to golf than it is to
[01:02:37] like pro basketball but it's all about peaks and valleys
[01:02:43] right now hockey is having its highest rated
[01:02:46] postseason i think maybe ever and you're starting to see an
[01:02:50] infusion of younger personalities and national
[01:02:53] personalities bring attention to this i think pat mackenzie's a brilliant job
[01:02:57] of putting a spotlight on on the nhl
[01:03:00] and the personalities have changed and you've seen
[01:03:03] this be like what what gets the sport to grow
[01:03:07] our personalities that can make you feel like
[01:03:10] oh this is where the cool crowd's hanging out i'm missing something i'm
[01:03:14] missing out on my sports fandom experience by
[01:03:17] not following this and the trident goes a really long way
[01:03:23] making something seem fun so what i'm saying mariners really play up the
[01:03:26] trident we ball needs to go far so trident comes out uh but in
[01:03:31] terms of like the responsibility to gatekeep and keep a sport alive
[01:03:35] that's that's number one that's pretty heavy
[01:03:38] i'm not that important um but i don't want to ignore the sport entirely
[01:03:43] but you look at just a sports landscape
[01:03:46] as someone that's championing sports like i've been a huge soccer fan
[01:03:50] uh most of my adult life uh someone that's just pounding the table for
[01:03:54] hockey presently for women's sports women's college
[01:03:57] basketball uh for non-revenue sports i can
[01:04:02] the plight of baseball has kind of found itself
[01:04:05] in that niche where there are really two major sports in this
[01:04:11] country it's pro football and it's college
[01:04:13] football and then like nba basketball in terms of like what
[01:04:18] people devote their daytime content to is a third
[01:04:22] but there's a wide drop off and everybody's fighting now and it's
[01:04:27] really strange to me that the national pastime has found itself
[01:04:30] in this conversation because when i was growing up watching you know the
[01:04:34] classic sports center anchors it was all baseball highlights they would
[01:04:38] carry me through my summer vacation i'd go to bed
[01:04:40] listening to bin scully and it felt like the national pastime stuff was
[01:04:44] legit i really want to blame apple for the
[01:04:47] iphone for making this happen because in terms of just being front of mind
[01:04:52] being part of the national sports discourse it's not there in ways that
[01:04:56] it used to be it's more of a niche thing i'm a big
[01:05:00] jack white guy though and jack white is really trying to keep this sport
[01:05:02] alive by really amplifying all the boring aspects of it
[01:05:06] like i said i i get it timeless game and all that
[01:05:09] need more tridents okay yeah more tridents
[01:05:12] have we thought about a second trident where would you put it
[01:05:17] yeah i would also have it in the dugout like you get as many tridents
[01:05:20] for how many runs you've batted in solo shot you get one trident okay
[01:05:25] you know you have a runner on second you get two tridents
[01:05:28] grants lami someone has someone has to find a way
[01:05:31] to carry all four tridents or here's an idea too because
[01:05:36] the pitchers don't get any love with the tridents it's all for hitters with
[01:05:39] home runs how do we get the pitchers holding up
[01:05:41] the tridents after striking out the side or something like that especially
[01:05:43] with this rotation you know like those like yellow raincoats
[01:05:46] that sailors wear like you remember the old islanders like 90s hockey logo
[01:05:51] maybe maybe we can there's an ice pack attached to that
[01:05:56] we could put that on the pitcher anytime he goes in the dugout in
[01:05:59] between uh endings as as the boys are batting
[01:06:03] out there we can throw in like an old mariner's coat over them
[01:06:06] i like the props the props are fun look i i haven't had many reasons to
[01:06:10] celebrate the university of miami over the last 20 years when it comes to
[01:06:14] football that turnover chain was something what
[01:06:16] well that's sick oh yeah it was sick turnover chain trident probably
[01:06:20] doesn't exist without the turnover chain
[01:06:22] so i'm all for the props more props
[01:06:25] right is that how you grow baseball i know this is a loaded question but
[01:06:28] if it was up to you on how to keep growing the sport and getting it
[01:06:32] back to more relevance in your in your terms i guess
[01:06:36] is it things like that or there are other things you'd implement into
[01:06:39] i think that there are real legitimate problems with how
[01:06:42] esbn covers sports and the esbn model right now
[01:06:46] if you watch their their daytime programming grid it is all just
[01:06:50] propaganda to get you to watch the games they have rights to
[01:06:53] they do an expert job of this with the nfl it's why
[01:06:57] you turn on first take and no matter what no matter where we are in the
[01:07:01] calendar they're talking about that press guy
[01:07:03] because they have the metrics to back this up they're pretty decent
[01:07:07] and when it comes to getting you to watch like as we saw with the
[01:07:10] caitlin clark 18 million person rating
[01:07:14] they devoted an entire day block to getting people to watch this game
[01:07:17] they got that and you saw the results of it they know
[01:07:21] how to work that machine game day is another good example
[01:07:26] they've let a lot of good people go when it comes to baseball
[01:07:29] and the people there right now don't really know
[01:07:33] what they're doing or how to sell this game
[01:07:36] that's a huge problem and you're seeing an uptick in the nhl it's not
[01:07:41] because some suit in the back came up with a
[01:07:43] brilliant idea it was just because pat mcafee likes a sport
[01:07:48] and decided to force the issue because it's something that he
[01:07:51] naturally likes and he made it seem cool and you're starting to see that
[01:07:54] tree bear fruit sure mlb network does a
[01:07:57] great job my friend nmberg just won an emmy for best studio show
[01:08:01] but that's not how you get the casual sports fans casual sports fan
[01:08:05] is not going to stop on mlb network because nlb is in the name
[01:08:08] you're gonna need to get them on some of these tent pool shows
[01:08:11] and right now either the talent is limited and i think i think the world
[01:08:15] of cba smith great on basketball knows how to talk
[01:08:18] pro football can knows he can make politics interesting to me
[01:08:22] baseball is a struggle he's not and so
[01:08:26] the talent needs to change a little bit the ideas need to change a little bit
[01:08:30] and right now the biggest talents in sports they're playing the game
[01:08:36] the metrics are saying we shouldn't really pay that much attention
[01:08:39] baseball because there isn't this appetite moreover we don't personally
[01:08:42] like baseball uh all that much i think that that
[01:08:46] genuine people feed off of genuine excitement
[01:08:49] i think and that genuine excitement is too far
[01:08:53] uh too far in right now in between genuine excitement and meaningful games
[01:08:59] like the regular season right now you can't you can't get them to talk
[01:09:02] about baseball during the nba playoffs
[01:09:06] you can't it's it's not mentioned it's a sport
[01:09:09] that used to be synonymous with summer
[01:09:13] and it all the main talent goes on vacation when the sport starts
[01:09:17] finding its groove it's in a really tricky spot and i
[01:09:20] think we've proven in sports media my company included it's really difficult
[01:09:25] to to make that work right now in this new
[01:09:27] media age the game changed a little bit and we haven't really altered
[01:09:31] how we talk about this timeless game as times change
[01:09:34] i want to go to a point you made earlier before we wrap this up mike
[01:09:38] ryan because you you were talking about the wbc
[01:09:41] crowds like we need more of those games
[01:09:43] we need like i think the the cultural crossover
[01:09:47] is really important when it comes to these games because i think
[01:09:50] i think people would be more inclined to watch they've tried
[01:09:54] they said hey you can bring your drums to to the games and we want to
[01:09:58] replicate this atmosphere you know what happens
[01:10:00] no one no one brings his drums no one brings a drum like you might have
[01:10:03] like one sad drummer like they it's they've
[01:10:07] bordered it and i used to my first internship out of high school was with
[01:10:12] the florida panthers and i worked there and it was a
[01:10:14] dire situation they were giving all their tickets away free parking
[01:10:19] it was they were giving sponsorships away it was tough
[01:10:22] i thought the franchise was going to move several times over there were two
[01:10:25] lockouts that killed any momentum and on top of that
[01:10:29] they were not good there were potentially five points out of the
[01:10:33] the final playoff spot it took leadership
[01:10:36] stability forward thinking a good draft strategy and it really
[01:10:43] legitimately took 10 years to get to this point guys like barcov and eklad
[01:10:48] they're not even 30 and they've been on
[01:10:51] this team for for 10 years they're still like relatively young players
[01:10:55] yet they've been in this market forever it took a long time to turn this
[01:11:00] cruise ship around and i think baseball is in a similar
[01:11:04] similar place i do think guys like j rod
[01:11:08] are that shit works like the the pimpin out of trot like that stuff pops a
[01:11:13] little bit good infectious personalities that make this seem like a
[01:11:17] destination where you can have fun boys of summer this is supposed to be a
[01:11:20] fun game i hope that that that can
[01:11:26] grab some fans but i do really struggle
[01:11:30] with how this sport really takes a hold of that younger audience given
[01:11:35] that the game itself is so tough for the casual sports fan
[01:11:42] is in their early 20s to wrap their head around
[01:11:45] it just it does not play well to the adb crowd
[01:11:49] well we'll wrap with this i wanted to get a rent at least a ranking out of
[01:11:53] you as a newly minted member of the
[01:11:55] mariners community i want you to rank your top three mariners ever
[01:12:00] yes uh all right so let's just go juno griffey number one a rod number two i
[01:12:07] know that that's loaded for a lot of a lot of fans out there but i think i
[01:12:10] that might not be popular in our comment section
[01:12:12] yeah i think i laid out the reasons why just chalk it up to
[01:12:15] like a miami thing um i'm gonna go reyndy johnson
[01:12:20] number three big unit uh the mullet the mustache
[01:12:24] the intimidating presence can you imagine like
[01:12:27] being an eight-year-old boy watching that guy on the mound that dude is
[01:12:31] terrifying you know when like you were growing up and you'd visit your
[01:12:35] your friend and you'd never see his dad but on occasion you would and you'd
[01:12:38] be terrified of him that was the energy that reyndy
[01:12:42] johnson brought to a tv screen all the time he's just terrifying
[01:12:47] so i mean he killed a bird with a baseball
[01:12:51] right he's just he's he was such a great character
[01:12:56] so that that's pretty easy for me and now like more modern day i'm a big big
[01:13:03] dumper guy okay i love it i think i got some jersey
[01:13:07] they sell those custom jerseys that just say big dumper on them right oh
[01:13:10] yeah yeah you can get one yeah so yeah i think i'll rock a big
[01:13:13] dumper you should get a city connect the city connect jerseys are awesome i
[01:13:17] have one i thought that i would like a like
[01:13:19] black uniform pants yeah i dig it it works it works look
[01:13:24] i don't like the fanatics uniforms i don't like the small print
[01:13:28] no i know some teams are getting the larger print back
[01:13:31] it really really hurts watching that beautiful mariners uniform have such
[01:13:36] small letters i know on the back of the name plate we gotta do something
[01:13:40] about this well mike ryan this has been
[01:13:43] awesome officially welcome to the mariners
[01:13:46] community community it's been a pleasure having you here on this podcast
[01:13:49] and again a month from now i hope you have fun with the mariners

[01:13:56] don't know if you guys make it out to road trips
[01:13:58] to to see your ems let me be the first to tell you
[01:14:01] don't come to miami it's a miserable ballpark i'll be there
[01:14:05] and if you want to hang out and drink beer and hear an echoey
[01:14:08] conversation because of how cavernous the building is
[01:14:11] i mean i'd advise against it they're probably better place the places to be
[01:14:15] out there but if if you're sicko and you
[01:14:18] want to experience really like the lowest rung of the professional
[01:14:20] baseball ladder i'll be there still need to experience that
[01:14:24] ballpark got to check it off the list but we'll uh we'll take that into
[01:14:26] consideration thanks mike ryan you're not missing much except like
[01:14:29] maybe a couple roosters the roosters are actually kind of cool
[01:14:34] yeah i'm sure well thanks mike ryan this has been awesome
[01:14:37] i appreciate it guys take care have a good one i'm glad we finally got to
[01:14:40] do this
[01:14:43] really hope you guys enjoyed that conversation with mike ryan ruiz
[01:14:47] we had a blast talking to him he was awesome i hope we have him back on again
[01:14:50] if the mariners win the world series at some point we'll have to call him back
[01:14:54] up see where he's at see where his fandoms at and tell him hey it was all
[01:14:58] worth it so really got really glad we got to
[01:15:01] have him on hopefully you guys got to learn a
[01:15:03] little bit more about him and hopefully there's somebody out there
[01:15:06] who maybe wasn't a mariners fan before and listening to this
[01:15:09] conversation gave him a reason to be so with that
