Episode 103: Could This Be The Final Season For Jerry Dipoto And Scott Servais?

Lyle and TJ battle through some technical issues to send you into the weekend with a little Matt Chapman optimism (1:32). Then they discuss the lame-duck status of Jerry Dipoto and Scott Servais, and why they still don't have a contract beyond 2024 (9:50). They close out the show with 'Speak Your Mind' (24:56).

[00:01:42] If you're listening, you're doing us a big favor.

[00:01:43] If you do, like, comment, subscribe on Brock and Sock this morning and said they're keeping tabs. Yeah, they are. And for those watching on YouTube, wondering what's going on with us, yeah, TJ's had a couple of computer problems. We tried to record a couple of times. We restarted a couple of times. So this was our best solution for this episode. So just bear with us through it.

[00:03:01] We know you guys can still see us and still hear us,

[00:03:03] which is the important thing.

[00:03:05] Anyway, Matt Chapman.

[00:03:07] Yeah, are we fired up about this? So JP's weakness as we highlighted during the season, if you look on baseball, Savan, it's going to his right in the hole at shortstop. That's a dangerous spot a three year deal, yeah, you've got my attention. I feel a little bad for Matt Chapman. It's almost bad luck. He's hit free agency at this time,

[00:05:42] right when the RSN bubble pops.

[00:05:44] And even though Matt Chapman in it, I don't even really know where the weakness is. Who hits ninth in this lineup when Hanagers in the lineup against lefties? Is it Hanagers? Is it Luke Rayleigh? Luke Rayleigh is your nine hitter. I look at that lineup and say, whoa. You know, Matt Chapman still might be the ninth best hitter in that lineup, right?

[00:07:03] He still could be, but it doesn't picks a step up yet to be honest if you compare the platoon in like Matt Chapman right so Matt Chapman would have a better defense than the platoon the platoon would hit for a higher average they'd probably get on base a little bit more Matt Chapman would hit for a little bit more power himself alone that

[00:08:22] so like we're kind of split to two there on like values banning average and on base power And that may be a conversation in itself, but it would get me excited to say they're really trying to push this team over the top because Chapman, he would if he's at his best or close to his best, though, he would do that. If it's three for 20 that puts you over the budget. So I think Divish estimated there at about $132 million right now, 132 plus $21 million for the seasons, 152.

[00:10:45] hoto, Justin Hollander, Scott Service. Let's hear a word from our friends at Simply Seattle. They're our favorite place to go if you want any Pacific Northwest themed sports gear,

[00:10:49] Seahawks, Mariners, Kraken, Sonics, Huskies. They have you covered and we have you covered

[00:10:55] too. So if you go to simplyseattle.com, you can use our code marine15 for 15% off your

[00:11:01] order. That's marine15 at checkout only at simply commission regulations play responsibly. Well for the third time in Jerry DePoto's tenure as now president of baseball operations of the Seattle Mariner

[00:13:23] You and I are sitting here trying to figure out the future of the Mariners franchise and how they go and what happens to Jerry and how Jerry can navigate and what, like, how

[00:13:30] Jerry can possibly keep his job if they were to somehow miss the playoffs again in 2024.

[00:13:36] Is this not ownership hedging that?

[00:13:38] Were they're going to wait until June or July guys and continuing to restock the farm and their scouting department. They all go too. Does John Stanton and the rest of the ownership group think cleaning

[00:15:03] house is going to change things? I don't like the idea of trading like Colt Emerson or Cole Young for some rental. And if they don't have a new contract, is it going to lead to that? I don't know. So okay, let me try and dig into that reaction you just had a little bit. So even if there, if this team falls flat on its face by the trade deadline, that reaction

[00:16:24] you had stays the same. the you know the luxury seating and the happen-bar and grill and Well, even though their television money won't make as much as they anticipate in the future I'm sure they will probably still be in the green because that's how they've operated forever They won't let the profits get cut into they won't let the major league roster cut into the profits

[00:17:41] So then we sit at the deadline and the Mariners are perhaps out of contention

[00:18:44] fruit, if we don't like the fruit, you're getting canned, you're gone. And he eventually ended up securing a three-year contract extension when they were in contention

[00:18:49] in September.

[00:18:50] But that took all the way until September 1st for that extension to get announced.

[00:18:53] September 1st, they really don't have much hesitance to letting this play out and sort

[00:19:01] of making it prove it.

[00:19:03] Not saying it's fair, but this is how's not good enough. We have to rebuild. We have to get younger. We have to get more athletic. We have to get exciting. So they did that. There was a COVID season that canceled 2020. Obviously they were not good in 2019. Like, that's not a fair shake. And I'm sure people out there

[00:20:20] that don't like Jerry DePoto

[00:20:21] are gonna use the one playoff appearance

[00:20:23] in nine seasons thing.

[00:20:24] I don't think that's fair.

[00:20:25] Like, because then he's been given no payroll to spend where they bring in if this were to happen it's not changing so i would sit long and hard think about it you really think it changes what's best i do not believe that doesn't necessarily mean it's fair but it certainly is a lot easier to sell to the public of one playoff appearance in the end of the and that's all that matters right public perception of the organization

[00:21:41] because

[00:21:42] that that would get smarter

[00:21:44] they should they should realize one and i think you really know that i both

[00:21:47] know the public has to like But again, I would probably prefer Jerry DePoto over somebody else in the future. But I vividly remember our conversation and I still do feel this way that this team absolutely needs to be in contention by this deadline. Bar none, bar none, right? For everyone to have a secure future. That needs to with that contract. He is running the franchise in a sense. Like he's not the owner, but he is the one who sails the ship and makes this thing go. So to have uncertainty with the captain of your ship, I don't love that. I don't love it at all.

[00:24:20] And I would think if you're Jerry,

[00:24:22] he probably can't be too happy about it either.

[00:24:24] He's probably looking at this ownership group saying,

[00:24:25] look at the way you handcuffed me.

[00:24:27] Look at what I can care with that. I can care. I'm having more fun. Yes. And look, the truth is this has happened multiple times,

[00:25:42] like you said, and they got it done late.

[00:25:45] Maybe one way or another,

[00:25:46] that's what's get to speak your mind. Speak your mind, Spock. That would be a wise, what is necessary is never unwise. Well, TJ, I may have an idea, but is

[00:27:05] anything on your mind this week?

[00:28:03] Radio voice of the blue chase and I was like well, that's awesome. That's good for him He's working towards career and he's now made it at a very young age, which is which is awesome. He's doing everything he's achieved

[00:28:12] but I'm just looking at this and

[00:28:14] Again, not this is not has absolutely nothing to do with that. I'm just gonna keep clarifying nothing to do with Ben

[00:28:19] He's just doing he's just trying to make it in life

[00:28:22] But this is another example of life not being fair, right?

[00:29:24] They just kind of kind of treated him like crap didn't renew his contract

[00:29:28] and then hired Ben Shulman who again very talented but

[00:29:37] We'd be lying if we didn't say his his father working for the team already didn't influence that decision and it's an example right of

[00:29:39] life Not being fair. It's very visual and sports media because all these teams and companies are public

[00:30:45] he has earned the opportunity to get like like every opportunity he's given he rises above the moment like he called the Super Bowl on Nickelodeon he's done those Nickelodeon broadcasts for a while

[00:30:49] now he did Clippers his first job was the LA Clippers job out of college then he's now he's

[00:30:54] doing the main big 10 college football broadcast he does some NFL game like he's done a bunch of stuff

[00:30:59] and he's really really good I I say that point out is that like, that's why we, you and I try and make connections. It's all about like you said, creating your own luck. And I think that's a great way to frame it. And having somebody else go to bat for you to get you what like eventually what you want, whether it be a job, advertising

[00:32:21] opportunity, something like that, right? These Ben wise and setup wise and you just hope that's not they're not just going to like change it for actually you know what I sorry I do hope they change over and I hope it's better but it makes them look worse I'll put it that way because it's good for Ben but a bad look on Rogers who owns the whole owns the blue jos

[00:33:42] owns the stadium etc etc yeah no I think he's a very good broadcaster,

[00:35:01] super nice by the way,

[00:35:02] and really passionate about baseball.

[00:35:04] I'm sure Blue Jays fans are gonna really like listening

[00:35:06] to him and they should.

[00:35:07] But like you said, do with the marine layer pod in the future? Maybe it's a pipe dream, but one of them is certainly, I think the two of us would love to be in a similar location, like in the same city, recording out of a real studio in person, like have guests come into the actual studio if they were ever willing rather than be virtual. Be amazing. I hope long term we can do that.

[00:36:21] But like you said, that is, that is part of the motivation of many things to keep this

[00:36:26] going and to try to put out good content. Those letter trains that go across for the most part, oh, they're such a pain. Like they're so slow, they reroute all the time. Like like one of our friends was here this weekend and we got rerouted a couple of times on the train because we looked up to the directions only to get on the train and find out, oh, this is on a different line today on the weekend. It's like, well, that would have been nice to know.

[00:37:40] I don't know before we got on direction soles

[00:37:42] we were going the right way.

[00:37:43] And again, they moved really slow, the like ABCDEF. And that's not even trying to boast, it's just like my brother instilled that in me. He has always been very good at that kind of thing. And I've made sure that I caught up as much as I could. All right. I mean, listen, I've actually gotten the train system down decently well. I was so worried forever. I was like, I'm never going to figure this out. At least with the number of trains, like I've gotten pretty good at it.

[00:39:00] I'm actually giving myself a pat on the back.

[00:39:01] I've impressed myself.

[00:39:02] And even a few of the letter trains too.

[00:39:04] But I don't know how any person figures out,

[00:39:06] oh, at this time of this day,

[00:39:08] this letter train's running on a different line end with that. I don't listen to quite as much hip hop anymore. It's a little more balanced. But yeah, it's like, when was the last Uzi album? When was the last? I mean, Travis Scott dropped his album in the summer. I mean, otherwise, it's like the Migos don't drop music anymore, at least for me thinking on that way. I mean, young thug, I think he's at prison, right? So,

[00:40:22] it's kind of hard for him to kind of hard for him to drop music and like thinking like, like,

[00:41:21] you have an evolved music case. Like I listen, like hip hop isn't even like the majority

[00:41:24] of what I listen to anymore.

[00:41:25] It's really like it is really diverse.

[00:41:26] It depends what I'm doing.

[00:41:27] It really depends what I'm doing.

[00:41:29] That's what I listen to.

[00:41:31] Now what are you listening to?

[00:41:32] I didn't know that.

[00:41:34] Oh, I don't, dude, I like kind of,

[00:41:35] I like listening to like Coldplay when I'm cooking.

[00:41:37] I think it's good.

[00:41:38] I like Coldplay.

[00:41:39] Yeah, they're good.

[00:41:40] It's a good, like a good house,

[00:41:41] like a slightly elevated house music, really.

[00:41:45] But if I'm like cleaning, then I listen
