Episode 137: Have The Mariners Done Enough Against The White Sox? + Mailbag

Lyle and TJ start expressing their frustrations with the team not being consistent enough against the worst team in baseball (1:38) before jumping into the mailbag to answer listener questions (8:47). They then go down 'On The Farm' and pick out a standout Mariners' minor leaguer (45:54), choose a 'Russell Wilson Umpire Of The Week' (50:09) and close out the show with 'Speak Your Mind' (53:39).

[00:02:31] here on Thursday afternoon, June 13th, pregame before game four of the set with the Chicago White Sox. And in terms of the first three games, Lyle, if we're ranking how a first

[00:02:44] place team handles a last place team in a four game series, in terms of winning all the games, that's about as bad as you can do the first three games. Have you ever been

[00:02:56] so pissed off to watch a Mariners team win three games in a row? No, I have not. If this series has taught us anything, you listening, maybe you have a different opinion. I know what

[00:03:09] it's taught the two of us. Well, we probably knew this already, but only further confirmed. If your opinion is not the Mariners need to be aggressive and make an absolute splash at this trade deadline in terms of adding a bat, I don't know what to tell you because

[00:03:25] what we've watched in the first three games of this series should confirm everything you need to be confirmed. In game one, they were shut out for seven straight innings before getting the

[00:03:35] offense going. They were down late in game two before a Cal Raleigh go ahead hit. And in game three, they won two to one in extra innings facing the guy that is when everybody's healthy,

[00:03:46] the number eight starter for the White Sox, the Chicago White Sox and Jonathan Cannon only topped off by trying to bunt in the eighth inning to manufacture a run, one nothing at home

[00:03:59] against the Chicago White Sox in a game where Luis Robert was not even playing until the ninth inning. Like I like I know we're usually the positive people. I'm sorry if I'm being harsh

[00:04:09] to start this podcast. If you're happy they won three games in a row, then you have every right to be happy and that's totally fine. They're still in first place by a lot. But

[00:04:18] if you're serious about wanting this team to truly go out and win a World Series this year, that should confirm everything you needed to be confirmed in the series. What we saw go trade for a real bad. The Chicago White Sox have five road wins all year.

[00:04:33] Like obviously you're supposed to win these games. And some people would come out and say, well, it's not how it's not. It's not how you win the games. It's that you win the games.

[00:04:44] And some people, you know what? You're allowed to hold that opinion. But when you're sitting here and watching a team that is clearly outclassed, the Chicago White Sox suck. They suck. How else are you going to describe that team? That is not a team

[00:05:01] that you you're going to match up with the playoffs. It's not like the Mariners invite the New York Yankees into T-Mobile Park for a four game series. And man, there are these close games coming down to the wire. Clutch hit here, clutch hit there. And it's exciting.

[00:05:15] And the Mariners win an extra inning games. Wow. That's amazing. No, the Chicago White Sox are not a team like the Yankees that you might see in the playoffs. No, no, they are going

[00:05:25] to probably just have really good odds in next year's MLB draft. That's what it is. That's it. There's nothing else to that. There's no reason these games should be so close. The

[00:05:36] Mariners have won these games. Credit to them. They have won these games. It would be much worse if they managed to lose some of these games. But let's not like watching this offense against

[00:05:48] those pitchers. It tells you everything. It tells you every single thing you need to know. That is the one of the worst pitching staffs in baseball. Not good by stuff, not good by location, not good health wise. Doesn't matter. And we haven't even watched

[00:06:05] game four yet, which will take place after this podcast is being recorded where the White Sox are throwing one of their few actually good arms in Garrett crochet tonight. Like what happens? Well, a joker meme get tweeted out tonight. I know it's sitting in the drafts.

[00:06:23] I kind of want to now that they've won the first three, but I also like keeping a six and a half game lead in first place. It's tough. Yeah. Look, if your mindset is doesn't matter

[00:06:38] how you win, just when I would counter that with this, that should absolutely be everybody's mindset and mentality in late September and into the playoffs in October. If the Mariners were going to win three games like this in the playoffs, great. They won three games in

[00:06:54] postseason play when it's mid June and you're playing far and away the worst team in the entire league and you're struggling to score runs so much that you need to try and manufacture

[00:07:04] a run in the eighth inning by Bunning. Like what are we doing? I know Bunnings, a part of Ryan Bliss's game. I know he's fast. I know he can do it. It's not Ryan Bliss dropping down a

[00:07:13] bun. It's the fact that they even feel the need to have to do that in the eighth inning. Why is that game not seven to one at that point? Bryce Miller threw a great, great start.

[00:07:23] He really bounced back nicely. And I know it was the White Sox, but you know what? He threw seven shutout, a little over a handful of strikeouts. He looked really good. Like where's the offense? Even just consider the fact of what it took to win the first

[00:07:38] three games in the series. We're talking about Buntz. Game one is where it is because Luke Rayleigh bunned a ball that was 99 miles an hour at his face. That was a start on top.

[00:07:49] Like Cal Raleigh hits the walk off grand slam, but Cal doesn't get a chance to hit the grand slam if Luke Rayleigh's not just playing self-defense at the plate. That's game one, then game two, Cal's clutch again. And then game three is the goofy Manfred runner in

[00:08:05] extra innings on a Mitch Haniger 96 foot bleeder over the head of a drawn in infield. So not the most inspiring offensive performance in summary, I would say from this series. No, no it is not. All the more reason. Again, that is my conclusion from this series.

[00:08:25] Go out and get an A level bat. And you know what? I'm sure Jerry and Justin know that too, because if we're seeing it and watching it, they're much smarter than we are. They know that.

[00:08:35] Now the question is, will they be given the resources to go and make that move? I hope so. Like obviously there's good hitters in this lineup, but it's not enough right now. It's just not enough. It's very clear. Let me end this on a slightly positive note.

[00:08:51] I think this is a good segue to our first mailbag question, but before we get there, for one, I've actually liked this series. Doesn't Mitch Garver look in total control the plate now? Look how much different it is for him than it was in May and April.

[00:09:06] He's had a great June. He's had a great month of June, which is awesome to see because they need it. Look at all the guys that are in the Mariners lineup that aren't hitting

[00:09:15] right now. Mitch Garver is, and that is a real positive. And so is JP Crawford. So slowly but surely like, yes, there are pieces coming together here. And if Garver can really start to turn his season around that we can't even overstate how much of a massive

[00:09:31] difference that makes. Yeah. It might be a storyline next week. If he has another good week, he will end up on one of our storylines next week. Cause if you just like watch how,

[00:09:40] how much more relaxed he looks and in control of all of his at bats. And it's, it's really great to see. But speaking of additions, let's get into our mailbag and let's break into this first question coming in on Twitter from Isaiah Aguilar

[00:09:54] on Twitter. I think I said that right. There's an HG in there, but I think it or an E Isaiah E Aguilar on Twitter. And his question is, if you could take any Mariners

[00:10:03] player from any era and add it to this team at the deadline, who would it be? And what would the trade package to get them look like? Assuming the players have the same exact career trajectory

[00:10:14] from the age time you acquire them. Okay, here's my answer to this. You would think I'm going to say Ken Griffey jr. I'm actually not going to here. I went with Edgar in this regard

[00:10:26] for a couple of reasons. So Mariners just need a bat. They need an impact bat that is going to provide a force at the plate that's going to walk and isn't going to strike out.

[00:10:36] Edgar does all three of those things paired with the fact that Edgar Martinez, even if you're acquiring him in his prime, it's not going to be cheap by any stretch by any way,

[00:10:46] shape or form. But it would cost you less than what trading for prime jr. Would cost trying to trade for prime. Ken Griffey jr. Would be like trying to trade for Mike Trout in 2015 or 2016 when aka the asking price is basically he's untouchable. But even if

[00:11:02] you tried to get to the table, it'd be like here is multiple established big leaguers and each of our top five to six prospects Julio. Sure. Yeah, he would be on the block. So

[00:11:16] Edgar I would say would cost something like three of your top 10 for a dh three of your top 10 prospects with at least one or two of them being absolute blue chip guys. Because again, like like amazing bat but no positional value or like defensively.

[00:11:31] So you bring him in, you give up the prospects to get them. And he just starts absolutely mashing that would be my guy go after. So here's what I did. I thought about it,

[00:11:41] it would be really easy to pick a Hall of Famer. And the three obvious ones each row Griffey Edgar, like total obvious like slam dunk, you would take him in a heartbeat.

[00:11:51] All three of those guys make a major impact on this team. But I wanted to challenge myself a little bit more. In honor of Buhner buzz cut tonight, here on Thursday, I said 1996 J. Buhner.

[00:12:05] While is 1996 J. Buhner not exactly what this Mariners team needs. I mean, we're talking a 127 WRC plus 44 bombs, a 370 on base percentage walks 12 and a half percent of the time has got an absolute nuke of a right arm in a corner outfield spot. Tell me that wouldn't

[00:12:23] fit right in on this team. Sounds great. What does he want? He wouldn't cost him. So at that point, he'd had two and a half years of control left. He was costing $5 million a year then. If you

[00:12:38] extrapolate that out today, he probably makes similar to what Michael Conforto makes right now. And Michael Conforto makes $18 million. So say you'd be on the hook for two more years

[00:12:48] at $18 million each. And then you'd be on the hook for two months at a pro rated of what our $18 million is. So really you're taking on a good chunk of cash in that sense. So it costs

[00:13:02] you, I would say, so your first prospect you throw in there, your highest rated one would be the line would probably be right around Tai Pete. At this point, you'd give up him and then you'd add, I don't know, Michael Morales or something like that

[00:13:15] and John McClossy and you call it good. Because two and a half years with the money attached, he was 30 years old at that point. And I feel like that's what the cost would be. But man,

[00:13:25] what an impact that dude would make. 44 bombs as a corner outfielder. He's exactly what they need. And I know it's as of back then, but he only struck out 24% of the time. I mean,

[00:13:35] we're talking if we were to pick one player, one style of player that could just be inserted onto this team right now and it would fit perfectly a right handed hitting that. Not Edgar? But that's too easy. He's a he's a hall of famer, dude.

[00:13:56] Yes. But I want to I wanted to challenge myself a little bit like yes, I think any Mariner team of all time would take Edgar Martinez. I'm going to be honest. I think you still might

[00:14:06] be low balling that trade package a little bit. So you're talking about a guy that's hit more than four. Not only did he hit 44 home runs that year, he hit 40 the year before. Don't you think he cost a little bit more?

[00:14:16] But that's only again back then everyone was doing it. Like I'm telling you 127 WRC plus. That's true. A very good hitter, but like an elite elite hitter. No for his time, not that for that era. No. Fair. All right. So maybe that would be the trade package.

[00:14:36] Right. Maybe maybe you might have to add a little bit more. So instead of tight Pete, you have to climb up the ladder one more. But combine the money, combine the era adjusted offense like that's probably the package.

[00:14:49] All right. Maybe I was just after watching this White Sox series and seeing this question, I thought to myself, well, how could this offense just take a just a miraculous miracle type step forward? It's like, well, can we add arguably the greatest DH to ever play the

[00:15:05] game? That'd be sick. Yeah, it's always a good solution. Uh huh. Okay. We're going to go from talking Hall of Famers to talking farm system because our second question, this comes from Shawna who's at Kade Marlowe fan on Twitter.

[00:15:19] She says if you could create a starting lineup for the Mariners using only players in the farm system, who would it be? Now I built out both a starting nine and a starting lineup. Which do you want first?

[00:15:33] Oh, you did a starting nine. I just, I just went position by position. Okay. I'll do position by position then. So my catcher's Harry Ford, first baseman because he's technically still prospect is Tyler Locklear. Cole Young's at second.

[00:15:49] Felmeen's at short. Cole Emerson's at third. My outfield right now in the Mariner system is Spencer Packard, Johnny Farmelo and Victor Labrada. My DHS is Laz and my starting pitcher is Logan Evans. I added a relief pitcher in there too.

[00:16:04] I put Troy Taylor, but it's almost exactly the same on my list as what you have for yours. Here's the difference. I moved some guys around because they've talked about there's certain prospects in this organization that have the ability to eventually play

[00:16:18] other positions. So because so many of these guys are penciled in, I have Dewell Joseph in left field because they said while he's a shortstop, he could eventually move to the outfield. And then I have Tai Pete in right field. Cause same

[00:16:30] thing about him. They said while he is a shortstop, he could be a guy that's so athletic that he could learn to play the outfield at some point. So my left to right outfields Joseph, Farmelo, Tai Pete, and then the rest of it's the

[00:16:42] same. I have Laz at DH, infield catcher Harry Ford, then first to third goes Locklear, Young, Felmeen, Cole Emerson, Logan Evans starting and then Troy Taylor is a reliever. It's a pretty good one. You want to hear my lineup?

[00:16:53] Sure. So Cole leads off. Harry bat second, Laz bats third, Locklear bats fourth, Emerson fifth, Packard sixth, Farmelo seventh, Celestin eighth, and Lebron a ninth. Ooh, that's I don't know. I might switch some things up first. I might

[00:17:09] have Cole Emerson hitting two rather than five, but Harry Ford's a level multiple levels ahead of Colt right now mashing double A. Oh, are you taking levels into account with this? I figure we were just doing

[00:17:22] ceilings of guys. Oh, yeah. I built this off of current production right now today. I was thinking ceilings and that's why I was going to say something like honestly like the ceilings, Felmeen's in the middle of

[00:17:36] the lineup and not batting eighth. Oh, well, I was going to say Felmeen leads off and then you have Emerson hitting second. You have Harry Ford third. You have Farmelo hitting fourth or fifth or sorry, Laz would hit fourth. What am I saying? You have like Cole Young

[00:17:51] hitting fifth. You have Farmelo hitting six, something like that. Yeah, no, this is current like current today production and where they are. So that's why I think it makes a little bit more sense when you have like Labrada and Felmeen down there at the bottom

[00:18:05] with Johnny and Packard hits sixth because he's you know in double A and he's been hitting really well. And then Colt, you know, even though he's still in Modesto, he's hurt right now is probably still good enough to be the fifth hitter. You have Laz and

[00:18:18] Locklear in the middle of the lineup and then you have your two double A studs at the top who get on base at an absurd amount. All right, fair enough. What was I going to say? You just sparked a thought in my head when you were talking about

[00:18:32] Labrada. Well, maybe I'll come back to it, but no, sure. It's a good lineup and it's every reason that you need to hear that this farm system is very, very loaded position player wise with a lot of bats that are going to be coming

[00:18:45] through the system here soon. And there's guys to be excited about. Oh, yeah, what I was going to say, he's not on our on the farm segment this week, but since Spencer Packard's on your list, we should give the guy a shout out. He just got

[00:18:56] moved up to triple A. So shout out to him. Yeah, exactly. Even more reason he deserves. But as of right now, based on current production deserves to be on that. That's starting nine because he's he's he's doing really well. Just to

[00:19:08] give you some perspective on this lineup outside of Taipeet, it contains all the Mariners top six prospects or Pete seventh. So outside of Taipeet who's seventh, it contains your top six prospects and the Mariners if you go look on MLB

[00:19:24] pipeline top seven prospects all hitters under the age of 21. That's pretty good. It's pretty good. You could almost build a starting lineup at it or you know what I think you mean 21 or younger, right? Because one or younger. Yeah,

[00:19:37] I was just saying I think Cole and Harry are 21. Yeah, Harry's 21. Cole's 20 right now. Oh, you're right. Yeah. Hey, my lineup had Taipeet in it. Like I said, I just had to adjust some things around and for all we know in what two

[00:19:50] years three years to wall Joseph could be way up on this list. Oh, 100% absolutely at Parker. Our purpose is simple. We want to make the world a better place by working more efficiently by using more sustainable practices by developing better technologies. We keep moving forward with

[00:20:09] each new idea, innovation and partnership. We're one step closer to fulfilling our purpose every single day. To find out more visit Parker.com slash purpose Parker engineering your success. Let's get to our next question. This one coming in on YouTube from at the Connor Joe trade.

[00:20:30] His question is who do you guys see the Mariners picking in this upcoming 2024 MLB draft? So I think TJ and I are both going to throw some names out here for people. Look, we're not experts. We're not like our

[00:20:42] friend Joe Doyle who could tell you every single thing about every player in this draft and break it down to a tee, but we'll start with this. We'll save players for in a minute here, but let's start with the basic idea of

[00:20:55] I think it's time for the Mariners to go back to drafting some college guys. They had a very clear plan the first couple years Jerry and crew took over the reins in this org which was build up the college arms. Well actually build up college talent period because

[00:21:09] first two drafts Kyle Lewis, Evan White next three Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Emerson Hancock after that they said we've got some established arms. We're building up our starting pitching now it's time to build up some young high upside potential star bats. So they went Harry

[00:21:25] Ford Cole Young the three first rounders last year. They've signed some international guys who have been awesome was our Montez felony etc. But that's where all the talent is right? You've got all these guys drafted as college arms that are in the big leagues now

[00:21:40] or close to it if you want to throw in Hancock and then you have all these guys you drafted and signed over the last few years down in Arizona Modesto. If you want to throw in Cole and Harry okay they're in double A

[00:21:52] but they're young there is a when you look at like rosters and who's on it by level there is some missing gap of talent here we're at the double A triple A ish level. So with that said I think it makes a

[00:22:08] lot of sense now for the Mariners to go back to drafting some college arms whether it be or sorry college players whether it be bats or arms to replenish that system in terms of getting guys who can get up

[00:22:18] to the big leagues in the next 14 months right and that plays off the point I just made like top seven prospects all 21 or younger and all hitters so preferably arms but there's not as many arms around the Mariners number 15 pick as you would like. So the

[00:22:33] Mariners are going to have to keep their eyes open to college bats as well but the idea is somebody that can be in established in double A knocking on door of the big league next year on the big leagues next year like seriously consider like a 22 to 23 year

[00:22:48] old by next year that is almost big league ready depending on how old he is. So here's the names I had down James Tibbs outfielder from Florida State Cameron Smith the Florida State third baseman Fance honey cut he fell down draft boards I think a little

[00:23:04] bit I think people especially after his freshman year had him as a more of a five tool guy he still is a five tool guy just got a lot of swing and miss he had that walk off home run in the regional against LSU that was

[00:23:15] that was that was against LSU right so against LSU. I know he had a walk off he had a walk off home no UNC didn't play LSU in a super regional so it must have been regional yeah so meanwhile he's got a sweet

[00:23:26] swing he's got a lot of swing and miss and then a couple of pitchers tray a savage from Eastern Carolina and then Brody Brecht from Iowa some really good stuff with those two but that's just like a handful of guys

[00:23:37] the problem is where the Mariners pick at least when you look at pre draft rankings it's a lot of high schoolers right now. There's some college guys that factor into it so Kylie McDaniel of ESPN had you Savage going 15 to the Mariners and honestly that

[00:23:53] would be a guy that would probably be a perfect fit now there's some people that think you Savage will go higher and he won't fall to pick 15 but again College arm had a great year at East Carolina could be

[00:24:03] up in the big leagues again in the next 14 months had an awesome awesome year this year like that would be a very ideal fit if he doesn't get there though. I think you start looking at some of the bats and

[00:24:17] again you mentioned Tibbs you mentioned Cam Smith you mentioned honey cut like honey cut as a player is awesome it's just are the Mariners going to want to take another bat that has swing and miss issues not nothing any of the guys they've drafted in the past

[00:24:29] have swing and miss issues but as we're seeing at the big league level that's the overarching theme are you going to take another bat like that he right now has a projected 30 hit tool at the big league level.

[00:24:39] Yeah so pretty bad so maybe they stay away from him the other guy that I was going to throw out there where who a lot of mock drafts seem to have right now linked to the Mariners is Seaver King who

[00:24:51] plays infield and outfield he's from Wake Forest he played two years at Wingate which is division two I believe and then and then he transferred to Wake Forest had a great year if you want his numbers exactly 16 homers 954 OPS and again he can play

[00:25:05] some infield and some outfield so he's been linked in mock drafts to the Mariners a little bit but I think the point here is of all the names we've thrown out college arm college bat seems the most logical. And who won't the Mariners get Lyle.

[00:25:20] Yeah I was going to throw this out so if you're listening to this question and you're about to send us a comment saying well what about Jack Haglione what about Braden Montgomery what about Hagen Smith those guys would be awesome but

[00:25:33] they're probably going to go a little too early which is why we didn't bring those guys up and if you're really going to take it a step further and say well what about Travis Pizzano Charlie Condon or Chase Burns I would

[00:25:44] encourage you to go look at any mock draft and then come back to us because those three guys will not be there probably after pick three and almost certainly not after pick five. If you guys can find a way for Jerry to trade

[00:25:55] up and get those guys we're all ears please let us know how they do that. Last thing the Mariners probably will not do this because if you're just thinking of baseball sound decisions taking a DH slash first baseman in the first round doesn't

[00:26:12] really feel like Jerry and Justin's MO however in terms of fun picks Tommy tanks would be a pretty fun pick Tommy tanks would be pretty fun that dude rakes a lot of dingers but he's supposed to go in the 20s right I think right around 2021 at least

[00:26:29] from the mock drafts I've seen yeah so it's not a third base though do you really think he's going to be a third baseman in the big leagues never now probably not so that's what I'm getting at he is probably a first baseman slash DH right doesn't

[00:26:44] feel like they'd make that pick however if they made it oh I'd be hyped because again like not only not only is is he a great hitter with a bunch of power but it's just it's just a fun guy to have

[00:26:53] in the system like he's got like he brings such a brand with them like an aura I thought you were going to say Caglione for a second I was like well yeah Lyle he's supposed to be a top six pick and he throws gas well that'd

[00:27:06] be great but again as I kind of prefaced he probably won't be there you know what let me do this too for those who don't know the name Jack Caglione because some of you listening might not know all these players in the

[00:27:17] draft yet he is a first baseman slash outfielder slash pitcher at Florida now he's not going to be a pitcher at the next level people are drafting him for his bat but he's a popular player Florida is going to be in the college

[00:27:29] world series and I think a lot of eyeballs are going to be on them so yeah in case you don't know him there you go he just hit 33 bombs and back-to-back years it's pretty good it's not bad so I know he's got

[00:27:41] the nickname Jack Tony but he's he's not going to be pitching at the next level he'll be hitting no no he won't next question this one's on instagram this is from Jordano uh Jordano underscore Bianco he asks does the Mariners run differential worry you not really because you

[00:28:00] know why because the Mariners have the best run differential in the division and frankly that's all that matters right now the Mariners are in first place by six and a half games they have the best run differential in the division and right now they have the

[00:28:13] best team in the division so you know what while they might not have the Yankees run differential they might not have the Orioles run differential it's good enough just want to make the playoffs guys that's that's what I want I want to make the playoffs I

[00:28:27] want to see the Mariners make the playoffs and right now this is fine I cannot I cannot in good faith be worried when this team plays in the same division as the A's and the Angels and then now what looks like right now a mediocre Texas and

[00:28:42] Houston team like you just can't be worried about that oh I'm worried really about what well you you you talk you talk them up of having this run differential as if it's like the best in the division which by by the definition it is it's 12 like their expected

[00:29:03] win loss total right now is 36 and 34 so if you're talking about winning the West that's different if you're just talking about does it worry you in terms of the Mariners getting into the playoffs no because you're right this probably is the best team in the AOS

[00:29:18] but what happens after that what happens when they get to the playoffs like like everything we just talked about at the start of this podcast and how the offense looked against the White Sox does that not all factor in to your level of concern with what

[00:29:28] this team's going to do going into the playoffs it's but it's a different question you like the the question is if I'm worried about the run differential not if I'm worried about the offense am I worried about the offense yeah am I worried about the run

[00:29:42] differential not really because it just reflects how they play well I think it's all encompassing the reason their run differential is not that high is because the offense isn't hitting I think the question is framed as if are you worried this team is lucky

[00:29:56] and I don't think this team has been lucky I think they've been about right when they played better teams they've lost when they played worse teams they've won all right right I think that's I think that's how I feel about that they've won a lot of

[00:30:10] yeah they've won a lot of one run games however yes you're right that they seem to beat the teams they should be and so far are not dominating the teams that are at par or better than them right so I guess yeah it's like

[00:30:28] saying like should the Mariners instead be five games under 500 instead of where they're at right now not really I don't think so because a team with a plus 12 run differential could be that way but I don't think this Mariners team

[00:30:40] is like I watch them they look like a team based on the teams they're playing that should be 10 games over 500 I'm just saying they're they're expected win loss total when you look at it is is about two games over 500 which I'm pretty sure

[00:30:55] plays a factor into all the one run wins that they've had now I don't think they're a team that's only two games better than 500 but I guess we I guess we read this question in two different ways I read it as the run differential thing being all

[00:31:08] encompassing also meaning are you worried about the offense well I am worried about the offense but I'm not going to dive too deep in the run differential I don't I don't think at this point it really worries that much and it really helped like this maybe is a

[00:31:23] different question if you have the Texas Rangers of last year at this point I think had like a run differential plus 150 and they're just killing teams but that's not the case this year so there's just less to worry about when the rest of the vision sucks

[00:31:37] there's really just a lot less to worry about because you don't have to have an A plus season to host a playoff series so no no you don't so if if what our question asker Giordano meant by this question in the sense of do you think the team's

[00:31:57] lucky and your interpretation of this question was right then I'm on board with what you're saying it can be two different things about not being worried about the team being lucky but all but also still understanding they need to go out of bat so if

[00:32:08] that's what he meant then sure they do need to add a bat without question I'm not not definitely not discerning that before we get to our next mail bag question let's hear a word from game time summer's here guys and that means it's time to get out to

[00:33:16] terms apply again create an account and redeem code J.U.S.T. B.A.S.C. B.A.L.L. just baseball for twenty dollars off download the game time app today last minute tickets lowest price guaranteed okay next question coming in on instagram from Dustin Helma

[00:33:35] Helama is that right Dustin Helama yep that's right the question is if the M's continue to pull away in the west how might that change the rotation slash rest I don't think all that much for a couple reasons number one pitchers like to be in a routine

[00:33:54] and just skipping starts on a whim well it probably wouldn't be on a whim but just like skipping starts in general isn't always the best thing for pitchers unless you're dealing with an injury or managing innings like what we saw what we've

[00:34:08] seen with some of the rookies in years past that's different but if you're talking about just skipping starts for Luis Castillo because they're running away with a division and you want to rest them that's not always the best thing for guys because being set in a routine

[00:34:23] is usually how these guys best work and kind of best flow now if well you know what else plays into this too if the Mariners are running away with the west they're going to be fighting for a top two seed in the American League

[00:34:37] if the the way this question is phrased is right because if they run away with the west then all of a sudden you're getting into the territory record wise where you could be right up against where teams like the Yankees are at and having a top

[00:34:50] two seed these days really matters because then you don't have to play in the first round you don't play in the wild card round so there's your rest for guys you're not playing a whole extra series giving yourself less of a chance to be

[00:34:59] eliminated in a playoff round so I would say it doesn't really change all that much for those reasons maybe they'd factor in a skip start for somebody like Brian Wu here or there but I don't think it would be crazy crazy drastic differences

[00:35:13] the only reason they would is for fatigue like you said otherwise they're going to just chug along as normal even when they win the division you you don't want to give any of these guys a week and a half off because then they show up in the

[00:35:26] first round of the playoffs and they're at a rhythm and that's the worst thing you can do and I know everyone doesn't want to see them losing the first round that's for sure so it's probably it would probably be minimal like I

[00:35:38] don't know how much I really have to add they're probably going to want to give Emerson Hancock's more opportunities as maybe an extra day of rest like what they're doing tonight giving him a start giving everyone else an extra day of rest

[00:35:50] as they play I think 37 games with one off day over the stretch but besides that it's not I don't think it's going to change without boring injury maybe the last week of the season especially if you're not fighting for any type of seating

[00:36:06] or the division or playoff spot at that point maybe the last week of the season for each guy's final start you have them on a shorter pitch count maybe Luis Logan George Kirby go 60 pitches or so 70 pitches where they still start but you

[00:36:19] don't make them go all out to throw 105 pitches but I don't think starts get skipped no no I don't think either I yeah I don't think that would be a good idea yeah okay next question also on Instagram this is from C Miles NY he says build your

[00:36:36] all-time Mariners infield my first baseman is John Allrude this was the toughest decision between him and Alvin two very good careers but I leaned Mr. Allrude second baseman's Brett Boone short stops a rod my third baseman's Kyle Seeger we're exactly the same except I had

[00:36:56] Alvin Davis at first base I have Boone at second a rotted short Seeger at third and then I threw in catcher and I'd have Cal Raleigh yeah thought about thought about Robbie a little bit at second little bit yeah I thought

[00:37:09] about Robbie and and I guess you could think about Beltre except I wouldn't throw Beltre in there because his best years were not here in Seattle if it's your entire career factoring into how your play is in this all-time Mariners infield then sure but if you're just

[00:37:26] basing it off their play in a Mariners uniform it would be Seeger not Beltre right I agree uh do you got anything else to add to that I think that's about it yeah I mean there's there's guys left off this list because it's just the infielder

[00:37:40] so there's no junior there's no Ichiro there's no A-Rod there's no Buhner because you know it's just the infield but right in terms of the infield it seems yeah it seems like we're on the same page right and we can forgive A-Rod

[00:37:51] enough because he is the best short stop in Mariners history and will probably not be beaten oh yeah there's going to be some people that either leave us a comment or just internally think well A-Rod shouldn't be on here I hated him are we

[00:38:05] going off production or not like A-Rod is not only one of the best short stops in Mariners history the prime of his career when he is at shorts when he was a shortstop he was one of the best short stops in baseball history

[00:38:18] yeah there are going to be very few people who are going to beat the stretch he had in Seattle ever had short ever 38 wins in six seasons wins above replacement I mean come on yeah I'm pretty sure he had a 10 war season at age 20

[00:38:33] yeah that's pretty good I think that earns yourself a spot on an all-time franchise infield let's get to the next question on Instagram this one is from Dan Bar-Holm and the question is the M's lead the division by X games at

[00:38:47] the break we should expect to win the West with confidence and that's framed as a question by how many games should the Mariners win be up by at the break for you to feel confident they will win the West I would say

[00:39:01] if they've got an eight game lead by the break they should hold it but if you want to be safe I'd say more like 10 to 12 I'd say 10 they do have some tough series coming up here before the break obviously the Rangers this weekend Orioles the twins

[00:39:15] who they struggled with earlier in the year the Guardians and the Rays so it's not all smooth sailing to the break but if you get to the break and you've gained three and a half more games from where you are right now while playing all those series

[00:39:29] think that lends itself pretty favorable down the stretch with an already pretty easy rest of the way when winning percentage wise still on Tankathon the Mariners have the easiest schedule all the more reason they should just continue to create some separation that's what makes this

[00:39:48] week so important so above all I mean I don't know about above all but I know we said everything we said at the start of the show about how the offenses looked but the fact you won these games obviously matters and it

[00:40:03] and man if you can take advantage of the Rangers this weekend you could really bury the rest of this division if you really take advantage of the Rangers this weekend that division is going to look a lot different now if you let the Rangers come into town and

[00:40:17] you get swept all of a sudden the division gets interesting because six and a half as we sit here on Thursday afternoon it could go down to something like three and a half if if they get swept this weekend but if you take advantage of this team you

[00:40:30] could be a ways up and it's going to be hard to recover if you're the rest of the AOS especially because there's less division games now than ever before yeah I agree yeah so hopefully they do that our last question this comes from Ellie who

[00:40:46] runs Trident Takeover she says what show or movie are you choosing if the Mariners were to do a parody I really want to see them do Caddyshack I really want to see it one of the funniest movies of all time and it's

[00:41:03] just because I want to see Taylor Sauceto operate as Carl the groundskeeper who Bill Murray plays I really want to see Taylor Sauceto chase the oh I'm a terrible movie watcher whatever the rodent is around the golf course well I I've only seen

[00:41:23] parts of Caddyshack I really probably should watch it all the way through but yeah I just need to figure out who's gonna who's gonna play Chevy Chevy Chase let's see who would play him I don't know who who it would be you gotta pick somebody oh the gopher

[00:41:43] duh yeah I'm an idiot yeah so I want to see Taylor Sauceto chase a gopher around a golf course and eventually blow it up at the end spoiler alert and you have no pick for Chevy Chase like I like sauce would also do a

[00:41:59] good Chevy Chase he would also do a good job with that you got to pick somebody else I know say Bryce Miller all right say Bryce will do it I was gonna say somebody like Rojas but they could try out for it now sitting sitting through

[00:42:18] those tryouts that would be almost more fun than watching the actual movie yeah because then everybody everybody would have to try out well assuming uh what did I pick I mean if you want to make a real joke out of it I said Blue Mountain State and

[00:42:32] seeing how these guys would be just ridiculously out of their element because I mean if you've seen Blue Mountain State it's all self-explanatory that most of the Mariners will be so so out of their element trying to be cast members in that show

[00:42:49] um if you want another one I said Major League just because it's baseball the guys can still relate to baseball and it's a funny movie and talking about how you don't want to see the team get moved but also it's just this collection of characters who are all

[00:43:04] expected to be written off and be awful I don't think Scott Service could do enough or could play a good enough Lou Brown because like Lou Brown's too like grouchy and angry all the time or Scott Service isn't like that but I'm trying to think who who

[00:43:19] Serrano would be where you spend you spend the entire the almost the entirety of the movie just sitting around worshiping Jobu was the character's name in the movie which is just like a I don't even know what he's supposed to be it's like it's some

[00:43:34] like religion but it like it like doesn't make any sense it's it's like a whole Pedro Serrano I mean have you seen Major League? It's been a long time. Oh okay who would play who would play Serrano I mean he's got a lot of power

[00:43:52] and hmm the only thing I was wondering I thought you were gonna make the easy decision and pick Happy Gilmore I'm like so who's gonna play Happy? Well I could have gone Happy Gilmore and I wanted to make kind of a joke and say Blue Mountain State because

[00:44:07] that'd be hilarious who would play Happy Gilmore I mean probably George Kirby considering golfer I mean golfer plus the temper like that would probably that would probably be it yeah and then yeah and then yeah but like like Happy Gilmore that's basically centered around one character

[00:44:28] Blue Mountain State and and Major League it's a whole cast of people so it would be less Mariners in that movie or unless you want to pick whoever the caddy is going to be that George Kirby like beats up in in the tournament to get onto the

[00:44:42] pro tour I don't know who that would be but Ryan Bliss I mean like that caddy is supposed to be very nice and just kind of reserved he's a rookie so he has to hold the the Vets clubs like something like that

[00:44:59] yeah that could be it but so that would be funny except again it's just I don't think it's enough Mariners being factored into the movie where the other two ones the other two that I picked you have a chance to factor in a lot

[00:45:11] of guys so yeah something like Major League there's a bunch of guys on the team who would now if I'm going to talk Major League I'm still trying to think about who Serrano would be I also need to pick who who Charlie Sheen would be who Wild

[00:45:25] thing would be but I would Ryan Stanek yeah he could be one I was honestly going to say Trent Thornton too like I don't know if people notice this or not you probably do like Trent Thornton that dude is a maniac when he's on the mound like

[00:45:39] he like everybody talks about Logan Gilbert and Walter right like the alter ego thing I'm gonna be honest like I think I would rather go up to Logan on a start day than I would Trent Thornton right before he enters a game that like he

[00:45:53] looks like he's actually going to rip somebody's head off when he's on the mound like now very very nice when he's off the mound but I don't want any part of him when he's taking the mound for relief outing so I was almost going to say Thornton

[00:46:03] for a wild thing Cal would probably be Jake Taylor who's the catcher because you know he's a catcher he's kind of the he's kind of the voice of knowledge a little bit he tries to keep everybody in line yeah I'm still trying to think I

[00:46:15] don't know if there's a guy on this team that really fits the persona of Pedro Serrano what about a past Mariner I don't know if it was going to be a past Mariner maybe I'd say somebody like Nelson Cruz just because again like all the power

[00:46:33] like he's very nice but when like at the end of the movie when he really has to get angry and and perform he does like I don't know if there's like a guy like that Santana yeah he could be another if he was

[00:46:45] still on this team I just don't know if this iteration of the Mariners has has a Pedro Serrano so I guess I'm only trying to think of position players but like I said if I were to pick wild thing yeah I'd say Stanek or

[00:46:58] Trent Thornton and I'd say Cal Raleigh to be to be Jake Taylor but that's a good question I'm glad you guys sent in some creative questions and like we talk about on these mailbags like we're happy more than happy to just answer general Mariners questions but

[00:47:11] when we factor in some of these creative ones to get everybody's minds thinking it's fun it's good thinking exercise yeah it is all right with that let's transition here let's head down on the farm so there's some guys to pick from this week who'd you pick Michael Morales

[00:47:32] we had yet to highlight him and it had been a bit of a slow ramp up in the pro levels for Michael Morales Mariners picked him out of high school third round pick in 2021 had struggled in his first two years his first year especially starts in Modesto 2022

[00:47:49] has an era near six over a full season not great comes back last year in 2023 drops the era a bit makes some improvements of four five three this year moves up a level and is currently sitting with a two five five eira this season

[00:48:06] over 60 innings he struck out 61 walked 21 listen to his last four starts this week six innings four hits one run 10 strikeouts the week before six innings five hits one run four strikeouts six innings two hits one run six strikeouts and then the doozy about a month ago

[00:48:25] six innings four hits of shutout ball and 10 strikeouts from Michael Morales it's taken a little bit for him as a high schooler drafted now at age 21 pitching in the Mariners system he's gotten acclimated and he's finally living up to more of his third round potential here in year

[00:48:43] number three it's really really nice to see for him and he's had a really really good good uh good third season in the Mariners org that's a good for that's a good reminder for people that high school arms can take some time they're not

[00:48:56] all going to rush through the system it's actually the less common thing to see those high school arms rush through the system even if they're really good so somebody like Morales who by the way would still be in college right now had he not signed with the Mariners

[00:49:09] at iSchool is in high a where a lot of college arms will start after they're drafted and two five eira through the first half of the season so far that's pretty good he's on pace to it as a 22 year old be

[00:49:20] up in double a and then we'll see where he goes from there so i know he didn't have the greatest first couple of years in modesto but patience time little by little he's gotten better and better and he's had a great year and ever which

[00:49:32] is by the way not an easy park to pitch in and it hasn't fazed them no and just think of it this way too in terms of the importance this is for the Mariners org he right now if we're talking about line of pitching in

[00:49:46] the levels of the minor leagues in terms of prospects he's right behind Logan Evans yeah ever say emerson Hancock graduated so yep it'd be Evans and then it'd be Michael Morales yep so the guy I took this week I feel like he doesn't get

[00:50:03] enough limelight because of all the guys that were in his draft class but I think we're overdue to talk a little bit about Aiden Smith here so that's who I highlighted he's 19 years old he's in modesto he was in the same draft class as

[00:50:15] Colt Emerson Johnny Farmelo Taipeet the Mariners took him in the fourth round you heard Jerry Depoto talk about after the draft that look there's a lot of years where Aiden Smith would have been a first rounder but this class happened to be loaded

[00:50:27] so he fell a little bit they gave him the money to sign him to steer him away from college went pro and so far here in modesto again while he might not be the face of that team he's got over an 800 OPS he's got

[00:50:39] 21 extra base hits on the year six of them being homers he swiped 17 bases he's played some solid defense he's been really good I think we've said it about modesto in the past but at some point in time we're going to look back on not just the 2023 draft class

[00:50:54] and probably be pretty amazed by it but we're going to look back on this first half 2024 modesto nuts roster and be like whoa at some point yeah kind of similar to the I mean the the 2019 Arkansas Travelers team at least stacking up in in stacking up in

[00:51:14] Mariners history but good yeah it's good good for Aiden especially as an outfielder you know in the system to to be performing like this at those levels it's good because outfield not quite as deep as the as the infield uh as the infield class

[00:51:28] no not at all so awesome to see him driving again sometimes he probably gets over shadow by the other guys in his draft class but he's a really good player so hopefully people pay attention to him let's get to our Russell Wilson umpire of the week and

[00:51:42] I'll take this one Lyle because we had originally scheduled for CB Buckner to make an appearance on today's episode because he deserved it he's been on quite a cold streak until I saw what came across my timeline today Emil Jimenez a second year umpire was

[00:52:03] umping a Tigers Nats game today and get this Lyle let me know if you've heard of this before so Lane Thomas is at the play there's a borderline pitch up that Lane Thomas looks back at Jimenez that doesn't say anything he looks and Jimenez tosses him out

[00:52:27] of the game to which the broadcast is sitting there and thinking did he just get tossed and they're sitting there and watching back the replays like oh he must have said something and they cranked up the audio all the way up the announcer stopped talking and you

[00:52:39] can hear there's nothing ball hits the mint Lane Thomas looks back mouth stays closed now stays closed right here and then Lane Thomas is like after he gets toss like what what what did I do so Lyle things that are not allowed now in major league baseball

[00:52:59] looking at the home plate umpire or was he even looking at the home plate umpire could he have just been looking back at the pitch and seeing it all the way through to the catcher's glove I think he was looking at the umpire

[00:53:11] well even still you like ejected for saying nothing saying absolutely nothing that the tweet worded here they tweeted out the video audio and video of lane thomas's ejection he literally doesn't say a word before he's tossed by home plate umpire emil jimenez

[00:53:36] that's a first as I just said that is a banger of an ump of the week and as we love to say as we often wrap this segment up I'm sure they'll be held accountable absolutely I'm I'm sure emil jimenez

[00:53:50] is going to get a sit down from the umpire's union this week tell them you better be you better do your job a lot better than you're doing it right now or you're going back to the miners because you know that happens all the

[00:54:00] time in the umpire's union because they they there's such there you know there's such men of accountability think about this in basketball terms lial the nba finals is on right now and the biggest complainer in the nba is right in the center of the nba finals

[00:54:14] in luca donchitz he talks to refs a lot could you imagine the uproar if he just there was a foul called against him he looks at the referee and they're like you're gone could you imagine the outrage well that's what this is

[00:54:32] well it's not an nba finals game but yes because you're like but that being said while we don't really see it happen in the playoffs would we be shocked in any way shape or form if some umpire made it about them in the postseason and through

[00:54:44] one of the and through a big name player out of a game no yeah uh yeah i wouldn't be shocked about that no because it's you know it's about them that's why people pay money to go to the ballpark to see umpires throw stars out of the game

[00:54:56] yeah again let me say it one more time i'm sure they'll be held accountable because they always are all right let's close out the show here get to speak your mind speak your mind spoke that would be unwise what is necessary is never unwise

[00:55:20] on your mind this week is what we talked about college football in here a couple of times and it is technically the offseason so there shouldn't really be anything newsworthy right well there were a couple of interesting things that came out today

[00:55:36] first of all the big 12s got like an interest of taking a billion dollars worth of private equity for a 20 stake in a conference but yeah there's not enough money to pay players lial a billion dollars they're going to pay the conference

[00:55:51] and private equity but no money for the players second of all um did you know i i didn't know this was a thing did you know you can now sell naming rights to a conference i didn't until today here on thursday

[00:56:04] no the big 12 look i think it's all state they're in talks with to sell the rights to the conference so instead of it being called the big 12 now the big 12 will instead uh ditch the word big in its name and instead call itself like the all state 12

[00:56:27] like i'm sorry does that not sound like the stupidest thing ever imagine if they pick something else imagine if they picked a different name as as we talked about earlier in the day imagine if they they called it what the manscape the man escape 12

[00:56:46] the manscape 12 i i saw like you could call like the the waffles of the sec presented by waffle house or something like that like i didn't know this was a thing so now you essentially can pick your funniest like funniest brand name and sponsor a conference

[00:57:03] wow what would you think about the marine layer pack 12 or the marine layer 12 sounds like an atrocious business investment considering it's no longer a conference oh i know it is still a conference while there's just two members the marine layer we get a bargain

[00:57:20] well are we gonna you don't want to hear our name on the cw like the marine layer 12 yeah because you because so many people tune into the cw yeah what would what what would your worst brand name for a conference be worst name for like would but like

[00:57:46] the buckies 12 that wouldn't be bad that would be interesting the worst one is it manscaped i don't know manscaped is pretty funny yeah yeah there are probably some less podcast appropriate ones we could decide on but manscape 12 sounds pretty funny yeah that sounds pretty funny and so

[00:58:04] that leads me so they could sell the conference naming rights they could sell the team name naming rights too right like asu like burrito express the burrito express arizona state football team yeah i'd probably call it the arizona state football team brought to you by

[00:58:22] vine tavern and eatery which most of you will not know what that is maybe the greatest bar to ever exist in tempi arizona that is now closed sad day well yes a couple years ago it closed but so brought to you by vine tavern and

[00:58:35] eatery let's throw fat tuesdays in there as well um and we could wrap it up with what's a good last one casa whiskey row i don't know yeah well we could do by casa too i think that works okay yeah or ryan division special we'll just

[00:58:52] have the entirety of we'll have the city of tempi sponsor it and we'll name it the arizona state football team brought to you by mill avenue no that would be great that would be like that would be the most all encompassing arizona state brand name ever it's like

[00:59:09] you've got michael crowe out here who's the president of the school doing all these things like well we're you know we're not a party school we're you know we're we're a university of academics and then he takes a billion dollar brand deal to call himself arizona state athletics

[00:59:25] brought to you by mill avenue yeah so if you know a good brand name that you think would be good to sponsor conference drop a comment in youtube youtube send us an email send us a dm i'd be interested to know but i know

[00:59:40] it is going to happen now it's gonna happen we're gonna get some it's gonna it's gonna look really weird right right right okay speaking of asu i i'm gonna stay on the topic of asu it's not about college football but it's about a

[00:59:56] friend of ours who somehow managed to make his way into the news this week so we have a friend from school who's very very talented also in sports media he works at one of the tv stations in denver he also happened to win the gym dance

[01:00:11] award when we were in college which for those of you who don't know what that is it's essentially the heisman trophy for college broadcasters so in english terms he's very very good at his job however he managed to get into the news this week because he was

[01:00:26] anchoring a segment in denver and the topic of chris bryant comes up and he takes it upon himself to spend about 30 seconds talking about how chris bryant is one of the greatest bank robbers of this generation going into detail about how essentially kb's missed over 240 games

[01:00:45] now since he signed with the rockies over the over his first three seasons there yet has still made 25 million dollars in the course of over the course of all the games he's missed combined so he went into detail about that started it with

[01:00:59] one of the greatest bank robbers of all time it's a great hook scottie as as two people like us who do a lot of social content you got to have a good hook and you did however he has now been in multiple awful announcing articles

[01:01:12] and a ton of people interacting with it and quote tweeting it on twitter pissed off that he took some shots at chris bryant saying how he's always injured like i did not expect to wake up last week and see our friend getting ratioed on twitter

[01:01:30] by all these people saying well you can't make fun of somebody's injury history like i'm sure he wants to be out there which i'm sure he does but i i just man it was hilarious again like there was there's this national news outlet like awful announcing

[01:01:42] writing articles about him so so here's my my my take on this whole thing and people are people are gonna get pissed off no matter what you say so it's really unavoidable right scott and for scottie's sake but second of all i thought someone

[01:01:59] the first reply that i saw to that tweet made a really really good point it's like scotty if we're going to use this analogy chris bryant is the bank robber is not at fault here the bank teller is at fault because the

[01:02:13] bank teller doesn't know what the hell he's what he or she is doing with that money just essentially giving the money away to the bank robber that is true yeah oh yeah i don't know if i said our buddy's name his name scotty

[01:02:25] and again he's very good at what he does and like you said to your point people are probably gonna get mad at something one way or another so like again like he really didn't say anything that egregious sure if if if you

[01:02:38] don't think that you should be sitting there making fun of somebody's injury history okay like like like you're entitled to feel that way but it seemed like a pretty harmless thing to say it's not like he was taking real shots at him or anything

[01:02:50] it was just supposed to be kind of a joke and i think a lot of rocky's fans who've watched a lot of losing baseball over the last few years are probably easily triggered and like if you just watch scotty do any one of his segments he's got this

[01:03:03] goofy smile on his face the entire time he's doing it like no he's not like not like i hate you chris bryant no screw you like you know that's that's never his intention uh the i will end with though that i'm disappointed scotty we didn't get a

[01:03:18] notes app apology oh that would be the only proper way to proper way to to commemorate this occasion yeah yeah so for those of you who don't know him like he's he's so well known for everybody he interacts with for like being like happy go lucky all the

[01:03:32] time huge smile always laughing like he's just like he's a very very easy person to want to be around because he's always got such an upbeat persona so yeah like like so to see all these people ratioing somebody like that on twitter

[01:03:49] probably all the more reason it had me laughing and knowing scotty and how he is like i'm i'm sure he wasn't he wasn't really breaking a sweat about it or anything i'm like like maybe he would have done it differently if he had to do it again

[01:04:00] but i don't think he's i don't think he's letting him i don't think it's letting i don't think the situation's like bringing him down or anything like that i don't think he took it personally no no no i don't think so either but

[01:04:11] it was just funny to see one of our friends end up in somewhat national news because he called somebody that got a very bad contract a bank robber so so there we are never know what you'll see so no you don't all right i think that'll just about
