Lyle and TJ kick it off by venting more frustrations about the conclusion of the Angels series (1:33). They then dive into their Mariners' storylines, first tackling whether or not the Mariners would actually consider trading Luis Castillo and what it would take to do so (17:02), then on if the team should be more serious about acquiring Luis Robert Jr. with all the injuries on the roster (40:33). The two of them go down 'On The Farm' and pick out a standout Mariners minor leaguer (54:15), honor a 'Russell Wilson Umpire Of The Week' (57:11), and close out the show with 'Speak Your Mind' (59:43).

[00:01:06] We're on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube shorts at Marine Layer pod. Let's get it rolling. And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Layer podcast part of the just baseball podcast network recording Thursday evening July 25th.
[00:01:34] And because of the downtrodden nature of the run, the Mariners have been on Lyle. I have a fun game for you. Oh, I'm ready. I think this is fun at least. Fun to look at. Maybe not so fun on the ears. The game I have created is called.
[00:01:51] Let's look at the Mariners stats in July. Are you excited? Because the Mariners, if you read some of these stats in July, you would think this would be one of the greatest months in Mariners history. Did you know Lyle?
[00:02:06] The Mariners in the month of July have a 2.63 earned run average. Did you know that mark actually beats their mark from August of last season by almost half a run?
[00:02:20] If case, you forgot August of last season, they want to franchise record 21 games last August and this month is half a run better. How about that? Huh? Oh, that's really good. Rotation has been nails. They've been lights out. They're carrying this team. We're going to keep going here.
[00:02:39] Yeah. In fact, not just rotation doc whole pitching staff, 2.63. Pretty good. So you would think giving up on average 2.6 earned runs per game in a month would leave to a ton of success. How about the underlying numbers? The underlying numbers must suggest some aggression.
[00:02:59] Well, the Mariners, Lyle also happened to be first in the league in FIP, first in X FIP and first in F war this month as well. Wow, this must be one of the best months the Mariners have ever had. They're ever in their history. They're cooking.
[00:03:17] The boys are cooking, but TJ with all of that, their record is let's hear it. Let's hear it. What's their record? 6 and 12. Woo. 6 and 12. Woo. Let's go, baby. I mean, it just gets worse every podcast we record these days, doesn't it? It really does.
[00:03:39] We record after Mondays just devastating loss against the Angels and even with that, I really figured. I really figured somehow some way they will win one of these games, one of them. No.
[00:03:55] They scored three total runs in this series and this is how they had their first sweep of the season. Three runs in three games against one of the worst teams in baseball. The Mariners have now lost six games in a row to the Angels.
[00:04:15] If the Mariners took care of business against the Angels the way they're supposed to, the Angels would be as bad as teams like the A's and the White Sox. Yeah. Did that feel good to get off your chest? A little bit. A little bit.
[00:04:28] So I have a couple more stats. I was curious when the last time a team with a sub three ERA had a losing record in a month. I thought I would be searching for a little bit longer than I did. In fact, it happened though in 2022.
[00:04:43] The Cubs had a losing record with a sub three ERA in July of 2022. So it's not impossible for this to be the fact. It's not like the Mariners have done something that has never been done in Major League history.
[00:04:55] Though I'm going to be honest if you had told me this was the first time in history this had happened, I would have believed you. Just like they blew a 10 game lead in 24 games, which was a Major League record, but a bump.
[00:05:10] But you know it's increasingly more likely when you have a sub three ERA in a month that you win 20 games in a month instead. That's what should be happening. 20 wins in a month, but no six instead. That's what we get and that's what we like. Think about that.
[00:05:29] Think about that long and hard. It is July 25th as we're recording this. There's no game on Thursday. So by the time everybody's listening to this, it is July 26th in a 31 day month and they've won six games. 31 day month. We're five days away from the month ending.
[00:05:48] Six wins. Six. With a 2.6 ERA. Yeah. Now I know there's an all star break in there, so that plays a factor. There's less games in July, but still six wins for a team with the best ERA in the month of July and baseball. Like right? It's unfathomable.
[00:06:09] And now for the first time they actually sit fully behind the Astros. You could have gone by percentage points and the Astros had played more games than the Mariners or vice versa. They were in a tie for first place for a bit.
[00:06:21] Now the Astros fully have a lead on the AL West and in case you guys haven't been paying attention, which most of you probably have. Now the Rangers are right back in this thing too. So great. Thankfully, the division could be one with 85 wins, you think?
[00:06:38] I think that might be the number 85, 86. We've been clamoring and jealous of the AL Central and NL Central for so long of winning the division with 88, 87, 86 and getting a home playoff series. Well this might be it. This certainly might be it. Eventually we made it.
[00:06:59] No longer the best division in baseball. In fact, it is the most mediocre division in baseball instead. Do you know what's even funnier though? If we look at the upcoming series this weekend, the Chicago White Sox. Have lost their last 11 games in a row. 11!
[00:07:17] And over that 11 game losing streak, the Chicago White Sox have scored just 19 runs in that stretch. So I really think we're going to get a true mid-off this weekend on the South side. I think it is matching up perfectly to be...
[00:07:38] It's going to be a historically mid-weekend series. Am I crazy to say? I haven't looked at the Vegas odds, but am I crazy to say the White Sox are actually favored to win this series?
[00:07:52] Not only are they at home, but the Mariners have to face Eric Fette on Saturday and Garrett Crochet on Sunday. In other words, they better win Friday's game.
[00:08:04] Do at least set themselves up for a chance to get to one of those teams or win a 2-1 type of game against one of those arms. Because I'll tell you what, the way they've hit against guys that they should be absolutely crushing,
[00:08:19] especially some of these guys on the Angels that they've faced, I don't have all the confidence in the world to exactly say that they're going to go out and just absolutely crush Garrett Crochet and Eric Fette.
[00:08:29] I mean, look at what just happened the other day on Wednesday against the Angels. Griffin Canning went 5-1 against them. Griffin Canning is a 5-ERA. And you expect these guys to go hit Eric Fette and Garrett Crochet?
[00:08:44] I think the White Sox might actually be favored to win this series. I can't believe I'm saying that. So I don't have Saturday and Sunday. The Mariners are favored to win on Friday. Well, that's not the Eric Fette or Garrett Crochet.
[00:08:58] I understand that, but that's as far in front as the sportsbook go. Sportsbooks go. And you know what? Let's not discredit Drew Thorpe here either. He's been good and that's who's pitching Friday. I know the Mariners have George Kirby going Friday,
[00:09:13] but the White Sox actually lined up some pretty decent arms to face the Mariners here this weekend. Now, go to Saturday. I wish someone would give us Saturday. That's stupid. I only have today and tomorrow.
[00:09:27] I'm very unfascinated because we can't work at this episode is going to come out by the time those odds are available, which is really disappointing. I'm very curious. What happens if they lose this series?
[00:09:39] I think there's a real chance that Scott Service does not make it to Boston. You think? Yeah. Because while the trade deadline is next week and you probably don't want to fire your GM days before the trade deadline, you could certainly fire your manager. What?
[00:10:00] Like, could it get any worse than it is right now? Yes. If they lose a series to the Chicago White Sox. Well, I mean, after that, this is taking place after the White Sox series where you would let go of your manager. Would it get any worse?
[00:10:13] I don't think so because the Chicago White Sox are on pace to have one of the worst seasons in Major League history. What is their winning percentage? 21% to 11 right now, I think. That's historic, historically bad. And you lose a series to that team.
[00:10:30] It is like the justification would be there. Even if you don't think it's Scott Service's fault, the justice... History across Major League Baseball has said a precedent that if it gets this bad for a team with this kind of expectations, moves get made. And it helps.
[00:10:50] You don't really eat any money on it because as far as we know, he hasn't signed a deal for next year. So you're not really... it doesn't burden you at all. I'm not going to sit here and say it's all Scott Service's fault.
[00:11:01] In fact, I think a whole lot of it isn't. But scapegoats are real. Sacrificial lambs are real. And that may happen if the Mariners cannot win this series against the White Sox.
[00:11:11] So this... like this should be a series that if the Mariners were playing up to expectations, they would go in there with all the confidence in the world that they're winning the series. Now maybe you look at the matchups and say, okay, they're facing Garrett Crochet Sunday.
[00:11:25] He's been one of the best arms in baseball this year. Sweeping on the road, even the White Sox might be tough because Garrett Crochet is really good. He's already dominated the Mariners once this year.
[00:11:37] But a team that wants to contend for a title has no doubt in their mind they're playing a series like this and winning it. I don't think it's like that right now, paired with the fact that this may be the most important...
[00:11:51] We've used most important series of the year before, actually recently when they played the Astros. But now this series feels real important because this is going to have a lot of emphasis on what the Mariners do or don't do with the trade deadline.
[00:12:05] These next couple of days it's like it's that slim. So are we labeling this a must win? Yeah, we're labeling it a must win. You're playing the White Sox. Like I mean the Angels were a must win and they got swept.
[00:12:18] But this is really, really a must win. They need to treat it how... The series should be treated how the Mariners treated the White Sox last year where it got to the point where Luis Castillo was essentially messing around on the mound. 47 straight fastballs.
[00:12:31] That's what this series should mean. But it's not going to be. It's going to be tense because neither team can score and there's going to be good pitching this weekend. So both... I don't think the White Sox fan base is checked out for good reason.
[00:12:44] If we're talking about bad ownership, the White Sox are about as bad as it possibly can get. So they probably aren't ripping their hair out. But you bet your ass in these 1-0 games that will be played this weekend. People are going to be ripping their hair out.
[00:12:57] They're going to be ripping their hair out. I gotta throw one more potential take out there before we get to our actual storylines. We have no confirmation of this, what I'm about to say. But I've got to take.
[00:13:12] This is some of the two of us that started to talk about. What are the odds the Mariners pitchers in the rotation have their own separate group chat to just vent about how they get no run support at this point? Like...
[00:13:25] More and more I'm thinking that's a real thing. That either behind closed doors, they obviously can't say anything in public. No player would ever do that. No person would admit to having a secret group chat.
[00:13:37] Well no person but I'm saying no player would ever publicly rip the fact that they're getting no run support.
[00:13:42] But behind closed doors, I can only imagine what these dudes are saying when they go out and throw seven shutout or six innings of one run ball and the team loses.
[00:13:51] There's gotta be some place they're venting about like what do I have to do or we have to do to win some games. We're doing our part.
[00:13:59] Like so many of these guys in the rotation are like the nicest human beings ever and they would never, they would never rip guys. It's certainly in public but pretty much at all behind closed doors. I really wonder what they're thinking.
[00:14:12] What do you think the name of the group chat is? First of all, I would 1000% believe it. And let's just remember, so you and I are both 26 years old. These guys are all in their 20s outside of Louise.
[00:14:22] Like we know how the mid 20s human brain works in that sense. I wouldn't put it past them to do that. I certainly wouldn't. You know what I'm wondering? I'm wondering what the name of the group chat is. Because you have to have a name there.
[00:14:39] So here's the two keys to it. You have a name and then you have a photo on the group chat. So like you can see if someone looks at your phone, you see it's a group chat but you don't know who's in it.
[00:14:51] Or if you have like a funny title, you don't know what it's about. Is the group chat name like 91 WRC plus? Do they just update the teams WRC plus every day? That would make it too obvious.
[00:15:06] Yeah, they just constantly update it as a reminder of what's hitting in the lineup. I don't know what in the world the photo would be. But yeah, maybe they just update the team WRC plus every day. You know if they had good taste, they would be Tucker.
[00:15:22] Tucker the dog? Yeah. Well, what about Kyle Tucker? Oh, well they could do a split. They could Photoshop it. Okay. We need Tuck squared. Tuck squared solves all the issues. Yeah, so maybe that's the photo and then they just update the team WRC plus every day.
[00:15:38] Speaking of Kyle Tucker, we should have put an amendem in our hiking thing that Tucker the dog had to come along to and that you had to take him. Now we're drawn a line. I'll hike. Also, we'll see what happens after the deadline.
[00:15:59] We'll see if I put out a public message on Twitter at the end of the deadline and say assuming of course the Mariners do not acquire one Kyle Tucker in the next five days saying we tried and we failed.
[00:16:12] I think you might need to make a response like a stitch on TikTok and respond to a real two on Instagram because let's just say Astros fans have found it and they've been constantly reminding you every single day now, especially the last couple of weeks.
[00:16:29] It's like, do we get an update on this? I think you might need to do a public service announcement on our social platform outside of your tweet. Yeah, maybe I'll do a public service announcement with a video on our social platforms
[00:16:42] and then also do a Notesapp tweet or something. Anyway, that's our theory on the group chat name and we will never ever ever find out but if we want to cook up I guess you can call it a conspiracy.
[00:16:57] If you want to cook up conspiracies, I bet you that group chat exists. Let's get into our Mariners storylines. Up first, here's an idea that's been thrown around a little bit with the deadline approaching as it is and the Mariners' uncertainty at the deadline
[00:17:16] makes you think what could the Mariners actually trade on their roster? We said on Wednesday's show they didn't really have anything to trade and they don't in the lineup. They have no one to trade in the lineup. However, there are pieces on the roster that they could trade
[00:17:31] and no piece on this roster would be more impactful of a trade to another team than Luis Castillo. Could Luis Castillo actually allow it to be a realistic trade option for the Mariners either now or if they want to look at this in the offseason as well?
[00:17:48] Do we want to bring up the no-trade clause thing here earlier? Do we want to save that because that will... You just mentioned it so we meant as well. So that will hamper things or maybe hamper is not the right word
[00:18:01] but that is going to make things tougher. That's a hurdle in the equation that's going to have to get leaped over because Luis Castillo does have a no-trade clause in his contract. That being said, does it make viable sense? It might.
[00:18:16] And look, a lot of fans are not going to like hearing that but Luis Castillo is by far the oldest of the group. He's getting close to 32 years old. He is owed 21.6 million dollars in each of 2025, 2026, and 2027. So he's expensive.
[00:18:37] And he hasn't really looked like the ace Luis Castillo that we've seen in the previous parts of two seasons. He's been good. I wouldn't say he's looked like an ace. So all that combined, does it make some viable sense?
[00:18:52] If it is the right package and you get a haul, yes. I am not crazy about this idea. For the right haul, you could entertain it. I think the only way this makes sense for the Mariners is if they really need to free up that money.
[00:19:08] I think the exact number for Luis Castillo now through 2027, the number's a little bit over 24 million dollars because he made 11 million dollars last year that they bought out essentially his final year of arbitration and then every year from now until his vesting option in 2028 is about 24 million dollars.
[00:19:26] So if they feel like they need that 24 million dollars, it could be a Robbie Ray situation minus the injury where they feel like they need to move that money off the books. When they signed Luis Castillo, they might have thought they would have had more cash on hand
[00:19:41] in the future and they feel like they need that cash now more than ever for the lineup instead of either for the lineup or for the other guys in that rotation that they want to keep around long term.
[00:19:52] I think that would be the biggest prerogative of all this. And here's my second point on this. I'm not totally sure you actually get a big haul for Luis Castillo unless you're trading some of your prospects as well because the No Trade Clause lets Luis Castillo
[00:20:09] essentially pick one team that he wants to go to because that's how he would use it as leverage. He would only go to a team that would benefit him in the future, be a good pitching environment and hopefully set him up
[00:20:22] to get a Scherzer or Verlander type contract late into his 30s. So he'd probably only end up picking one team in that scenario. And if he only allows the Mariners to negotiate with one single team, then the Mariners lose every ounce of leverage in trade talks they have
[00:20:38] because if that one team knows that Luis Castillo has to wave as no trade clause to go there, then they'll be like, who are we negotiating against? Nobody. So that limits the amount we can get back.
[00:20:48] Oh, and you want us to take on all $24 million of his contract this year, next year, and the year after that? Well, sorry, we just don't really feel like giving up that much for him. If that's the case and you guys don't want to do this trade
[00:21:03] or if you're not willing to give up a lot, okay, that's fine because we're the only option for you to trade with anyways. So I don't, the only way in summary, I think this is important and necessary for the Mariners is if they need that money freed up.
[00:21:20] Otherwise, I think if you're going to acquire talent for Luis Castillo, I think he's your wrong piece. I think we look at this different. So number one, I don't look at this like Robbie Ray. Luis Castillo has not been injured. He's made just about every start.
[00:21:37] Now there was Robbie until he got hurt, but he was injured and going through Tommy John rehab during the trade process where the team that traded for him, ultimately the Giants knew not only would he miss half the year, but Robbie Ray also
[00:21:50] has an opt out at the end of this year. Now he probably won't use it, but he has an opt out in that contract at the end of this year. Luis doesn't. You've got the team control. There's no worries there.
[00:22:00] I also think because the Mariners want talent back, they'd eat some of that money. They might eat half the contract each year. This to me and the reason I'm floating this out is because it is about getting talent back.
[00:22:14] And by talent, I mean bats getting real talent back for Luis Castillo. So this is where my idea comes into play here because this is where my brain's at in terms of if they were to do this. And let me say this again.
[00:22:28] I am not crazy about this idea. It has to be the right package. I'm also not with you in the sense that he wouldn't net a real return. No, I think I know. I think he would. No trade clause kills it. There's no negotiating power.
[00:22:44] So you said he would only he would likely only pick one team and it would need to be a good pitching environment. It would need to be a place where he can have success.
[00:22:52] It would need to be a place where he can get another big contract later on. Correct. Well, what if he went to a big pitchers park that recently moved its fences back? That's a really good team and competing for a world series.
[00:23:03] And has every reason to believe he can be set up for success? What am I getting at here? What if he is OK, waving the no trade clause to go to Baltimore? OK. Can I can I take a step over with this going?
[00:23:20] This is where the idea is at. And here's the trade package I floated. The Mariners would give up Luis Castillo. They would eat half his contract every year. And you would also trade Michael Morales to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for Kobe Mayo and Heston Kirstad.
[00:23:39] That's the idea. And this is the type of package I'm talking about in terms of if you were to even entertain this idea, in case those are not aware, Kobe Mayo has not yet played a big league game in his career.
[00:23:52] There are people that are higher than the world on this guy. Like our friends at Just Baseball, they have Kobe Mayo tabbed as a top 10 prospect in the league. He's a corner infielder right handed hitting bat with huge power going off in triple A. He's got 140 WRC plus.
[00:24:07] The only reason he is not in the big leagues right now is because the Orioles are just way too stacked offensively. Heston Kirstad and outfield bat, another position the Mariners need. Short sample size in Baltimore this year, 24 games. It's got a 155 WRC plus.
[00:24:23] Kobe Mayo would have six and a half years of club control. Kirstad would have five and a half years. And that fills two serious positions that the Mariners are in need of in terms of finding offense. That's where my head's wrapped at in terms of this trade.
[00:24:40] Yeah, the no trade clause is going to make it hard. But I still don't believe that a guy that has pitched at the top of a rotation for years and has club control
[00:24:49] and there are plenty of teams out there that I would still view like as an ace wouldn't net real value. That's what last thing here and I'll throw it back to you. The Orioles are in dire need of pitching.
[00:25:00] This is why the Mariners and Orioles have been linked on a trade forever. Just in the off season, it was more talked about the idea of Miller and Woo and some of the young starters. The Orioles are in dire need of pitching.
[00:25:12] And if Corbin Burns walks in free agency this year and goes somewhere else, they're really in dire need of pitching because you'd have Grayson Rodriguez at the top. You hope Dean Kramer or sorry, not Dean Kramer. I don't know how Bradish comes back healthy.
[00:25:25] You have some guys behind them like Kramer, Colervin. They need top end starting pitching and they have a surplus of prospects that they cannot use them all at once in the big leagues. It's not like it's not possible.
[00:25:39] This is why Kobe Mayo is in the minors right now. So this is where my head's wrapped at in terms of this trade. I have more thoughts on this but I don't want to ramble for 15 minutes straight. So this is the idea I've cooked up.
[00:25:51] Now if Luis Castile was the ultimate age, like he ages like a fine wine as a pitcher. Like if he was like a Verlander or Scherzer, I would say once his no trade clause lifted after 2025, you could slam dunk this if you put Morales in there too.
[00:26:13] Maybe you throw one more piece in there. I think it would be a little bit easier at this very point. I feel like you would need to add a tiny bit more because of that no trade clause to acquire those guys.
[00:26:24] However, however, I still think the value is close. So the trade package aside since this is purely hypothetical. Let's set this trade package to the side for now and talk about why this makes sense.
[00:26:38] Now in the Orioles eyes, they've been linked to Terak Scoobal more than any team this deadline. The problem is I think Terak Scoobal is going to cost them Jackson Holiday if they go get him. I think it's going to be pretty close to that sort of trade package.
[00:26:55] And I don't think the Tigers are trading him. They basically come out and said they're not trading Scoobal. Which leaves the Orioles in a precarious situation. Corbin Burns has made it sound like he's not going to re-sign in Baltimore or hasn't full on mate.
[00:27:11] It doesn't feel like Corbin Burns is going to be an Oriole next year. He's a free agent at the end of this year after they traded for him. But it doesn't sound like as of right now the Orioles are going to re-sign him.
[00:27:20] So they need a top line or at least close to top line pitcher for the next few years. And the Mariners have to offer someone who's already under contract for someone who's not making top of the line starting pitcher money.
[00:27:33] Top of the line starting pitcher money now, especially on a say if Luis Castillo hit free agency now he'd sign something like a five, six, seven year deal. He would cost in the mid-30s I would say.
[00:27:44] If he entered free agency when he would have after last season if the Mariners didn't sign him to an extension instead of the 24 AAVs making he'd make about 35 at least right now. So the Orioles would be getting Luis Castillo on quite a discount
[00:28:00] which really helps them out a lot. And you can justify this on the Mariners side as well. You just drafted two guys so you feel like can be in your rotation. You have Logan Evans in the minor leagues.
[00:28:11] You have Emerson Hancock in the minor leagues, all who you feel like at some point in the next let's say 18 months all four of those guys could be big league starters. Sloan maybe add on an extra six months but the rest of those guys
[00:28:23] you feel like within 18 months can be a starting pitcher and you only need one to work. That's it. It's all you need one to insert into your rotation and make work. So I think that's how that works out too.
[00:28:36] And on the Colby Mayo and Cursed Ed side coming back in Cursed Ed's been good in a small sample size in the big leagues this year. Colby Mayo has just been destroying AAA and doesn't have a spot to play on the Orioles. So that works out.
[00:28:52] Now here's my last point on this. How do you think this would get received? And I was going to bring this up by fans. They would probably be unhappy. I think a lot of you will be really unhappy to see Luis Castillo go.
[00:29:09] Here is why I still throw the trade package out and say if these were the pieces on the table. It's worth considering the same people that would be furious to see Castillo go are also the same people that are fed up watching this offense.
[00:29:25] You know why I say that because everybody's fed up watching this offense and the Mariners opportunities to acquire bats like they're running out of options. They've got when this podcast comes out they'll have about four or five days till the deadline.
[00:29:40] That's all the time they have and even if you say well if they don't get all the moves that they need to get made before the deadline you do it in the offseason. How are they going to do that? You're going to go splash in free agency.
[00:29:53] We all know that's not happening. So are you going to make a bunch of wheel and deal trades again? We've seen that not work when you've tried to acquire big leaguers and threading the needle and getting the best out of them.
[00:30:08] It hasn't worked with Polanco, it hasn't worked with Colton Long, it hasn't worked with Jesse Winker, it hasn't worked with Adam Frazier. There's a lot of trades like this they've tried to make and it hasn't worked. These are not one but two extremely club control bats
[00:30:22] that have a chance to not just provide value but make a true impact on this lineup for a long time. They really do. Mayo can be a 2025 home run, maybe a little bit more corner infielder
[00:30:37] and Kerstad can be like I don't want to say like a, I mean he's not a perennial all-star or anything like that but he can be a very valuable outfielder on your team and hit toward the top of your lineup when he's at his best.
[00:30:50] They're running out of options for how to find bats and like you just mentioned to your point the reason I think it makes the most sense to trade Castillo of all of them is because I don't think Bryce Miller or Brian Wu would net you both these guys.
[00:31:03] I don't? No, I don't. I don't. I don't. League starters. No. Making no money. I do not think that could net you both players. I just, I don't. I think they have more trade value than Castillo does. I don't think so.
[00:31:21] They have no, I think you could float them out on the open market and it would be a real negotiation. I think Wu's got the injury concerns with some teams and I think Bryce Miller you look at a lot of his peripherals he gets hit pretty hard.
[00:31:35] He often, you know, he does not have good home road splits. Like, Luis Castillo is a bona fide ace. Like he's not 38, he's 32 or he's 31, I'm sorry. He's approaching 32. He's not that old and like you just said, he's not making crazy top line starting pitcher money.
[00:31:53] So not only does it make sense from that regard but like again they got to find a way to go get some bats and then the arms they have coming in it stays in line with the young Corb arms you have. Luis Castillo is the old one.
[00:32:08] He's the oldest of the group. You have Logan Evans that should be ready next year. Emerson Hancock if Evans isn't ready at the start of 2025 or if this trade somehow happened at the deadline could come in and make the final eight starts of the year.
[00:32:21] It wouldn't be that many. Gerangelo St. just should be ready about 2026 they think. Ryan Sloan like Joe said, Joe Doyle told us end of 2026 maybe 2027. There are young arms being filed through the farm system right now. They're not going to lack pitching depth
[00:32:40] but they do not have bats that are ready and ready. Now that's the other thing too trading for these two guys would not mean you're putting them in double A and they're going to be right around the same group as the Colt Emerson's,
[00:32:52] Lazaro Montez's guys like that next year. No, these are these are big leaguers that are not getting big league time right now because the Orioles are that stacked. I maybe I'm wrong on this but I actually think Castillo might have more value than Miller and Lou
[00:33:08] and I think this trade can make sense. I will disagree with you on that but that's not that is not really the whole point of this conversation. So here's the last point I want to bring up with this. We said it's not going to get received.
[00:33:20] It really won't because what this says is at least with these intentions sure you are looking to the future but so many people are so tired of hearing the word future so tired of it for good reason.
[00:33:34] Luis Castillo is a win now player because he is currently in the big leagues performing very well which is what people want and people would hope that there would be impact moves to be made on the big league roster for impact win now players.
[00:33:52] Are these two win now players? Kerstad and Kobe Mayo. You're saying his name wrong it's Kobe. Kobe sorry. Is Kobe Mayo and Kerstad a win now player? Not in 2024. Are they in 2025 or they win now? I wouldn't be shocked if they start to go off in 25.
[00:34:14] Kerstad is going off right now in a small sample. Is that yes? It's not Luis Robert that's what you're asking but I once again say they are running out of options. They are how they're going to acquire bats. I don't know how they're going to acquire bats.
[00:34:28] I really don't. There are not a bunch of household names on this trade market. They're going to cost you an absolute haul like the top tier stud bats and again if you don't go trade for those guys because you don't want to give up the prospects.
[00:34:46] What's your solution? And how are you going to find offense next year? Again what happens in the off season you're not splashing in free agency. You know this ownership group won't do it. So what are your suggestions instead?
[00:35:00] Do they keep doing the same thing they tried to keep doing the last few years where you acquire already big league caliber bats that you're hoping to get the best out of? It's not working. These guys can be controllable bats that have impact for a long time.
[00:35:15] Imagine this. Imagine you have those two guys and Julio and Cal and then couple years go by Colt Emerson's up and then Harry Ford's up and then Lizarro Montez is up.
[00:35:25] You still have this pitching rotation intact and you've got Julio and Cal and then Mayo and Cursed Ad and then you've got Emerson and you've got Laz and you've got Harry Ford. You need bats.
[00:35:38] You can't run this offense back another couple months and you can't run it back next year. So that's why. This trade is kind of like things Jerry has done. Acquiring people with anticipation of better performance in the future opposed to...
[00:35:54] The one thing Jerry has not done bat wise is like acquiring a superstar bat essentially. So he's done... He's like Mitch Hannigar for example is kind of with less prospects status pretty much what these guys were. He acquired Mitch Hannigar in 2016... 2017.
[00:36:16] No but Hannigar wasn't like a big prospect. Not a top prospect but the idea is the exact same. Tiny bit of major league playing time, success in the minors.
[00:36:26] We think he's big league ready we're gonna trade for him we're gonna put him on the roster and what do you know they knocked it out of the park with Mitch. But he was a little bit of a lottery ticket. These guys are much less a lottery ticket.
[00:36:37] All prospects are lottery tickets. But I mean sure every player's okay but then Jorge Polanco was a lottery ticket. Everything in baseball is a lottery ticket the whole game is luck.
[00:36:50] But these guys like again you know what I mean when I say Mitch Hannigar was a lottery ticket he was not a top prospect. These guys are believed to be impact bats going forward in the future. But there's no guarantee they're good.
[00:37:07] Again I'm not saying it's a bad idea I'm just saying training this is not getting certain sure fire bats. However as you've said they are running out of options. So if Jerry DePoto dials up what's the GM's name? Michael Ius right?
[00:37:22] If he dials up Michael Ius and this is a real possibility I am all in. I am 100% all in. But expecting Kobe Mayo to show up to Seattle and light the world on fire right away when they need to.
[00:37:36] They need to win next year too in 2025 and say hey you're starting in the infield full-time and you're expected to contribute to a significant part of this offense is a lot for a young guy. He's 22 right? That's a lot.
[00:37:54] Jared Kelnick had a lot of the same responsibilities was ranked higher as a prospect came in. So as we start to wrap this thing up because we have spent a lot of time on it and I know there's a couple other things we have to get to
[00:38:08] but likely this would be a trade that is more likely to if it happens at all happen in the off season because I think there's too many moving pieces to get this worked out in the next four to five days
[00:38:18] unless it's been getting talked about in the works for a while now for a while now and we just didn't know and then we just haven't heard about it. This probably feels like an off season type trade if it were to happen. I agree.
[00:38:30] But again, look, I understand why fans would hate this idea. And again, I am not crazy about trading from the one piece of your team that is your strength. I'm really not. I would only consider it. And again, this is still all consideration.
[00:38:49] I'm not saying like, you know, we've had a we've had a good discussion about it here with topics and points that go both ways. But I'm not like 100 percent. You have to do this.
[00:39:01] I'm just saying it's probably worth consideration, especially if this gets worked out in the off season because again, I don't know how they're going to acquire bats moving forward. I'm with you.
[00:39:11] I think that's the one thing we can take away from this is that there is there is nothing for certain. There is, I guess, still things they could do at this deadline to acquire bats. We'll get to that here in a second.
[00:39:22] But before let's hear a word from game time summer's here guys. And that means it's time to get out to T mobile park and watch the Ems and hopefully they score some runs for you while you're there.

[00:40:35] There's been a lot of ideas floated out there with the Mariners suffering injuries this week. JP Crawford out four to six weeks with JP Crawford out four to six weeks with a broken pinky and Julio Rodriguez on the injured list with a high ankle sprain.
[00:40:52] Does that mean Lyle that the Mariners should reconsider a trade idea for impact bats like Luis Robert Jr.? They need bats. Shocker breaking news here. They need bats. Luis Robert, I'm going to be honest. My opinion still hasn't really changed on this.
[00:41:13] I think my opinion for a while has been I'm not crazy about the idea. I still don't think I'm crazy about the idea. Number one, as we talked about a million times now, he's got injury concerns. He's got big time strikeout concerns.
[00:41:27] Luis Robert right now is striking out over 34% of the time. That's a lot. Number two, Luis Robert's got a 113 WRC plus right now. I know he missed a lot of time this year, but he's played about 50 games now.
[00:41:42] He's been about 13% above league average as a hitter with all the strikeouts and in the last two weeks. He is OPSing under 600. So all that encompassing with the fact that I'll go back to what I've said a bunch now over the last couple weeks.
[00:41:58] One bat doesn't fix this thing. And if it's prime Luis Robert when he's playing it his best, that doesn't fix this whole offense. And all of that paired together with the fact the White Sox are asking for the moon. I just, I can't buy in on this one.
[00:42:11] There's way too much risk involved. There's way too much hit or miss quite literally because he strikes out 34% of the time. And I just don't think this is who you shell out your farm for. Honestly at this point, I'm more interested in Vladdy. That would be two.
[00:42:28] Let me reframe the question in this way. So I'm with you on Luis Robert for what he's doing this year when you really need him the most. And especially the center field aspect, we talked about him paying for the center field price.
[00:42:40] Mariners would have him in center field if they traded for him for a week until Julio was back and ready to go. Would you still want to trade for a center fielder though? With Julio out. If they trade for Jazz Chisholm, sure.
[00:42:57] Because he could play center, he could play second, he could play a little bit shorter if he has to. Jazz Chisholm made two miraculous plays in center field today. Thursday that being. You made a couple of really nice catches.
[00:43:09] That is somebody that again, if something like this happens where Julio goes out, you have somebody that can go play center field. Jazz Chisholm can play the outfield.
[00:43:17] So somebody like that I'm interested in because again, jazz has the club control and he's not going to cost all that much. I'm interested in trading for a center fielder. I'm just interested in trading them trading for an outfielder because they need an outfielder.
[00:43:30] I'm going to break it on this segment. It's not a trade, but it is something that has not happened to the Mariners in 20 plus years. Would you like to know what it is? Let's hear. The Mariners will be on Sunday night baseball on August 11th. Against the Mets?
[00:43:47] Yeah. Wow. At home. I think it's been what 22 years? I think 2002 was the last time. That is unreal. Like now of all times you put them on Sunday night baseball. Now. Oh man. I hope they have a bunch of new bats by then. Yeah. Geez.
[00:44:14] Jazz will look really good on Sunday night baseball against the Mets. Oh, he'd look great. He'd look awesome. Wow. That is crazy. The Mariners are going to be on Sunday night baseball. At home.
[00:44:26] Has it been since Steve Seasheck blew that game against the Cubs that they've been on Sunday night baseball? Yeah. Oh, that got that. God, that game sucked. Oh my God. Yeah. But that was on the road. Yeah, it was. This is a T-Mobile Park on Sunday night baseball.
[00:44:40] I hope ESPN remembers how to get to the ballpark. Yeah, that's actually going to be crazy. I kind of, I mean, I guess we're not doing a live stream that Sunday. That's for sure, because it'll be a night game. I know. I'll be able to post game one.
[00:44:54] Well, maybe. Game would end at, game would end around seven. Oh, wait. What am I saying? It's the West Coast. It's not going to start at seven o'clock. It's a 410 start. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, we could still do one.
[00:45:07] I mean, we still might have to do one a little late because I'll probably, I'm going to assume I'll be at the game and off to drive home. But yeah, we could still do one. Yeah, that's going to be crazy. Huh. All right. Sign me up. I know.
[00:45:18] Shout out to them. Anyway, okay. I'm glad you broke in on that. That's cool. Breaking news here on the Marine Layer pod. Anyway, yeah, I'm still interested in the Mariners trading for a centerfielder or an outfielder,
[00:45:28] multiple outfielders to be honest with you, but somebody that has the ability to play centerfield. So yes, Jazz Chisholm, he's going to cost way less and he has a lot of club control. It just, it can't be Louise Robert, not for what they're asking for. No.
[00:45:43] I mean, the price comes down perhaps, but if the White Sox assuming they can execute a trade in a competent fashion and not get totally ripped off, the Mariners can totally rip off the White Sox then obviously we're in. Sure.
[00:45:58] So, but in the sense that the White Sox handle this logically, they would know if the Mariners were trying to acquire Louise Robert right now, they would be desperate, certainly desperate. I'm sure the White Sox GM knows the fact that Jerry DePoto's seat is probably warm.
[00:46:15] So Scott's service's seat, they know that the roster's not hitting and they know that they need a centerfielder. So you know what they could do? They could just be like, well, we know you really want them.
[00:46:24] So we're going to sit back and we're going to let you hand over Keith Laws now in our number five prospect in baseball, Colt Emerson, Felene Celestin, one of those guys and then more Johnny Farmella. We'll take him too and all that.
[00:46:37] You wouldn't want to give that up. Wouldn't want to give that up for Louise Robert. And some people can make the case, I think Louise Robert on a full healthy season next
[00:46:46] year if would bounce back and play a lot better next year, which can make a big impact on the Mariners and be exactly what they need offensively. However, that's a lot of projection at this point.
[00:46:57] So I think going and getting jazz again, I think jazz at this point would be the idea. Cedric Mullins is on the block two. He's not going to hit and plenty can play center field and he's a better
[00:47:08] hitter than Michanogre is and not too much off of Dom Canzone either. So, you know. Yeah, no, you're right. Now there's I'll say one and a half more guys we want to talk about on the Vladdy thing because we mentioned them.
[00:47:26] Are we buying these he who shall not be named rumors, aka John Heyman rumors that the Mariners are actually very much in on Vladdy? We buy in this. Has Jerry called Ross Atkins about him? Sure. How much progress? Where's the progress meter at?
[00:47:41] That's what I'm wondering because Jerry's probably called all twenty nine teams seeing what's available. We also know John Heyman is not tied in with the Mariners at all. I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason he does not like the Mariners
[00:47:54] is because it's like nobody will give them sources there. Mariners keep things pretty tight lipped and in-house and John Heyman like, I've seen people tweet that about John Heyman before that they're like, I'm pretty sure the reason he doesn't like the Mariners is because
[00:48:06] they won't give him sources. So do we actually believe he's got some inside information into what the Mariners might be doing? I don't know. But he said they've been aggressive like it's so subjective. Like what does that mean? What does that mean? It's all talk. It's all hearsay.
[00:48:21] Yeah, I'm not buying it to be honest. Right. I'd be interested but I'm not buying it. Now that the M's need a shortstop would you reconsider his diamond mate Boba Shet? And this is the last guy we're going to get to. Huh? No.
[00:48:37] His WRC plus has gone down since we last talk. It was already low. I think it was 72 the last time we talked about him 69 now. This is unfathomable. This dude is 20. He's our age. He's 26 and he goes from 120 like 120 WRC plus guy to now doing
[00:48:55] like half of that, which is crazy. If it was 95, I think you and I would be saying bye. Right. I think you and I would be saying bye because you could just move around the infield and deal with him and JP next year, however you'd want.
[00:49:09] But that's tough. Not if they're asking for the price we think we're going to they're going to ask for them. Now, if they were going to ask for Michael Arroyo and Alberto Rodriguez, sure, I'll trade for Boba Shet.
[00:49:22] But you know what the Blue Jays are going to try to ask for in terms of the return package and fear of the mariners. You shouldn't be willing to give that up. Now, if you again, if Boba Shet was a 95 WRC plus hitter,
[00:49:32] you would hope, well, it's been a bit of a down year for him. Maybe it'll just be a one off. He can bounce back in 2025, even though again, he does do a lot of things that don't really fit the Mariners blueprint where
[00:49:43] he just swings it a ton of first pitches. He doesn't really walk, etc., etc. He doesn't strike out. That's nice. But you just described Luke Rayleigh besides the strikeout part. Well, anyway, anyway, for those of you out there hoping, well, maybe Boba Shet would still turn it around.
[00:50:03] Maybe maybe he'll start to get hot here in the last 30 games. Boba Shet has a 510 OPS. It ain't pretty. What's that? He'd fit right in. Sounds like a mariner already. So again, if the trade package was way lowered by Toronto, sure, I'll listen.
[00:50:25] Not if they're asking for top end talent, not for top end prospects. No way. But while we floated the idea out there of a centerfielder, they actually do need a shortstop. Yeah, whether it's Nico Horner, Jonathan India is not a shortstop,
[00:50:38] but you could bump someone else over to play short. I know you're not buying it, but, you know, we're talking about, we're nitpicking here about what looks like a mariner. But the only thing we know looks like a mariner right now, Lyle, are bad hitters.
[00:50:51] Jonathan India is the exact type of hitter that will have the second base curse in Seattle live on. He has terrible home road splits throughout his career. He just started to get hot in the last few weeks. I'm sorry, I can't buy into Jonathan India.
[00:51:06] Well, unfortunately, the bar has been set incredibly low for him that even if he was a below average hitter across the league, he'd be an above average hitter on the Mariners, which. But again, his road splits are so bad and you're talking about from going
[00:51:19] you're talking about from going from Great American Ballpark, maybe the most hitter friendly park in baseball to the least hitter friendly park and baseball in Seattle. Well, I'm. You know, it's not a good idea. Do you know it's not a good idea hitting in Seattle? Period.
[00:51:38] Mariners have made that pretty apparent on Ed Rosario, too, but like they need a short stop. They really do need one. However, they're going to do it again. If Jonathan India is the only player in Fielder really available at the deadline, like fine.
[00:51:54] At some at some, like you said, they're running out of options. They are running out of options. Jerry knows it. Scott knows it. Justin Hollander knows it. And you said and you said, you know, what's not a good idea hitting in Seattle?
[00:52:07] Well, I'm going to give a shameless plug to the vlog we put out during All Star Week. If you haven't checked that out, go check it out where Taya Oscar Hernandez basically said exactly that, that basically nobody likes hitting in Seattle.
[00:52:17] He's talked to other players around the league that say it's incredibly tough because of the conditions, the batter's eye, etc. Well, I was not happy when Taya Oscar Hernandez won the home run derby. And I referenced that quote he had during All Star Media Week
[00:52:30] or All Star Media Day about hitting in Seattle. And I I was pretty vocally frustrated to put it to put it lightly. So go check out our vlog because I I might have I might have gone off a little bit.
[00:52:42] So what could have been a way to acquire a hitter in the off season? What would have been a sweet setting? Taya Oscar would have been against it would have been against what both you and I said, but they would have been right.
[00:52:56] Would he have even resigned here? The guy he would have thought about a QO, I think. But he clearly got. Yeah, I can't say for certain, but that like he when he hit free agency,
[00:53:10] I don't know if he knew he was going to get what the Dodgers offered him. No, probably not. But he clearly also didn't love hitting here in Seattle. And who knows if another year in Seattle would have actually netted him a payday.
[00:53:22] I'll tell you what, what he's done in LA this year. He's getting himself a payday. Yeah. And he and he's now for certain not coming back because he knows why he struggled. Now, it also probably helps when you're surrounded by the greatest player
[00:53:35] to ever live in Shohei Otani along with two other Hall of Famers and Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman and maybe the best catcher in baseball and Will Smith. But, you know, that helps too. Well, I still saw the trade requests list for the Dodgers
[00:53:46] were like six players long still. Fascinating. Yeah, the Dodgers for as good as their offense is at the top half. Want more offense in the bottom half of the lineup? And I mean, we'll continue to say that's that's the best run organization in baseball.
[00:54:01] So yeah, I struggle to have much sympathy for him. So sorry. I know. All right. I think we're ready to move on to our minor league segment here. Our last couple of segments of the show. So let's go down on the farm here.
[00:54:18] Your standout minor leaguer this week, Teej, is who? Shout out, Brodie Hopkins. It's been shoving down there in Modesto. Mariner sixth round pick from last year. He threw six shutout innings on Wednesday against San Jose.
[00:54:34] He's had one of his best months, if not his best month as a pro this month. He's got a 174 ERA in July. It's pretty good. He's probably in the consideration for Mariners minor league pitcher of the month. And I think that's a pretty cool accolade to have.
[00:54:49] He's he's really had a good month here in July and I'm sure is close to getting a promotion up there. He's 22 years old and he's, you know, who's a college draftee down there in low A this year.
[00:55:01] So he's probably not too far away from from getting promoted, but good for Brodie Hopkins. He's been great. And yet another reason we'll shout out our friend Joe Doyle here. Why he's the best. I'll repeat the same thing we said on last week's podcast with them.
[00:55:15] When we asked Joe last year, who are two slept on Mariners minor leaguers in this draft class that are going to be good. What did Joe say? He said, I like Brodie Hopkins and I like Logan Evans. Well, sounds like Joe knows ball and we know he does.
[00:55:27] We can confirm that. Yeah. So Brodie Hopkins has been awesome. Yeah, you would expect he'll make some starts here and ever it by the end of the year. It makes sense. Guy I'm looking at. It's a cliche one. It's a blue chip one, but I'm talking about him.
[00:55:39] Colt Emerson. He's back. He's healthy. What has he done here in July? Well, he's hitting 319. It's got a 909 OPS for the year. He's got a 143 WRC plus a Modesto. And the reason I'm highlighting him here this week is because you briefly mentioned it a couple of minutes ago.
[00:55:57] Keith Law came out with his updated prospect rankings this year. Colt Emerson on his list is number five. He is 19 years old. He has played basically less than a full season of Pro ball. He is in low A. He's number five.
[00:56:14] He went 22nd overall in last year's draft. The mayor, like again, I'm sure there's going to be some of you out there that are not Jerry DePoto people. Are you trusting ownership to find the next front office group
[00:56:27] that's going to target a guy at pick 22 that might be a number one prospect in baseball? I don't know. Colt Emerson, man. They nailed that one and he's going off when he's been healthy. He's going off. Took them 50s.
[00:56:40] It took him 57 games to be a top five prospect. 57 programs total this year and last year with injuries. Imagine if he wasn't injured. Yeah, I'll tell you what, we may see some Mariners prospects get moved at the deadline. I don't think he's getting moved. That's for sure.
[00:56:57] Yeah, he might be as close to untouchable as you could get with a prospect. I think Vladdie would be it. I think that would be it. Yeah. And maybe Vladdie and maybe the Mariners would still say, we'll give you other prospects for Vladdie, but not him. We'll see.
[00:57:10] Yeah, we will see. Let's get to our Russell Wilson umpire of the week. I've missed this segment. We haven't done it in a couple of weeks, which has allowed us time to evaluate a truly earning performance. This came yesterday as we're recording this.
[00:57:25] This was on Wednesday, Wednesday nights. Diamondbacks Royals game. Brian Onora was behind the plate. Onora, I will note, was ranked 86 out of 88 umpires this season by, I believe correct, correct call percentage. And it's the bottom of the night. It's sorry top of the ninth inning.
[00:57:45] The Diamondbacks are trailing this game four to three. There's a runner on first. Perdomo is at the plate for the Diamondbacks. The Royals throw strike three. Notice I said through it wasn't called Lyle runner on first goes steel second base Salvi tries and throws him out.
[00:58:04] But Onora misses the call if he calls that strike three, the stolen base doesn't matter. The batter is out and the game's over. But because Salvi caught the ball was a strike at the bottom of the strike
[00:58:18] zone went up and through to second, the runner steel second or sorry, this the steel wouldn't have met would didn't wouldn't have did not matter because because it was a three to count and Perdomo walks. And so Salvi throw means nothing anyways.
[00:58:37] And so because Onora missed that call, the Diamondbacks now with two outs have run two runners on and the Diamondbacks end up scoring five runs in the inning and winning because he missed a call. So a three to pitch that should have been called strike three
[00:58:52] and should have ended the game instead turns into five additional runs. Correct. Unreal. You know, actually that helps out the Mariners because now that they've fallen out of the AOS race, now the Mariners actually have to start looking at the wild card and the Royals losing.
[00:59:06] Helps the Mariners. But if we're talking about the sake of umpires, well, this dude was just responsible for five additional runs being scored in this game. Well, as we like to say, I'm sure he'll be held accountable. Yeah, I'm sure.
[00:59:24] 86 out of 88 umpires by umpire auditor in terms of correct call percentage. I mean, we're giving you a raise for that. We only get demoted if you're outside the top 88, which is impossible. Yes, it is. All right. Last segment. Let's get to speak your mind here.
[00:59:43] Speak your mind, Spock. That would be unwise. What is necessary is never unwise. Do you have anything you're thinking about? Well, I want to start off this segment with this semi small announcement or mind you guys again on next Wednesday's episode.
[01:00:06] We're hosting Brock and Zalk again a week from today as when this episode comes out on Friday, we will be hosting from six to 10 on August second looking forward to it. It'll be about three days after the trade deadline. So that'll be fun.
[01:00:22] So I have plenty of reaction of that to talk about. I'll have some training camp stuff as well. Get to talk a little bit of Seahawks. That'll be fun. So it's going to be a good time. It's going to be a good time.
[01:00:32] First time was hosting on a holiday. This is a regular old day right after the trade deadline. So we get to host next Friday on 7 10, 6 to 10 a.m. in for Brock and Zalk next Friday. I'm looking forward to it again. That should be a lot of fun.
[01:00:46] I had a lot of fun the first time in this next time. We got to decide what we're going to rank. Oh, so we went through our baseball commandments. Now we got to pick something else. We've still got to do something that's either tied to this podcast or
[01:00:58] tied to the personalities of the two of us. It can't be something bland. We got to think of something creative and we'll think of something before, before the end of before, before Friday morning. But yeah, I can't wait. I'm already counting down the days.
[01:01:11] This is a full show this time on the holiday. We just hosted seven to 10. This time we're doing it six to 10. Now people are probably going to hear us talk a little bit of Seahawks, which we can do by the way.
[01:01:19] I know we're a Marist podcast, but we're big, big Seahawks fans too. So tune in next Friday and you'll get to hear that. But yeah, we're going to, we're going to have to pick something creative to rank. Yeah. I know. Well, we'll think about it.
[01:01:32] We'll think about it. And speaking of those two mixes that was going to add in here on Speak Your Mind, I want to give a shout out to the Mariners for playing right into the cliche that they stay in the race long enough until training camp starts
[01:01:45] and people can instead focus on Seahawks training camp instead of the Mariners season. Note, Lyle, that the Mariners only fell behind the Astros. Oh, they'd fallen behind them before in the series, but they tied them coming out of that series.
[01:01:58] They'd only fallen behind the Astros in the division by a game once training camp started. Tale is all this time in the Pacific Northwest. People tune into a little bit of baseball, training camp starts and it's football time.
[01:02:14] You know why that's a, you know why that's a trend? Because a certain baseball team missed the playoffs for 21 straight years and the football team across the street was winning and Seattle went from a baseball town to a football town. Mm hmm.
[01:02:28] So we'll shout out to them playing right in, right into the dynamic again. And we thought after the rust trade that it would flip. Suleos town now, it's a baseball town, it's a Mariners town. It's now time for the Mariners to win.
[01:02:44] And the cliche took from that moment was that March of 2022, two and a half years to flip back. Incredible stuff. My best Mariners fan. Well, you know what? That plays right into my speaker mind here because what am I thinking about this week?
[01:03:03] I got to be totally honest with you. There is nothing else on my mind than the Mariners trying to mentally destroy me and the fact that we have to wait around and see what in the world's going to happen at the deadline.
[01:03:16] That's all that's on my mind these days. Like how they have blown this 10 game lead, how the offense can hit, how they don't have new pieces for the deadline yet. They're really living rent free in my head. They really are.
[01:03:28] And because of that, that's all I'm thinking about. If you want to know, if you want a little peek into the two of our brains in terms of our Mariners fandom, this is where I'm at. Like they're occupying all the headspace in my head right now. Unreal.
[01:03:44] You know, it's funny we've joked about this a couple of times on the podcast, but like for certain no season has made us enjoy off days more. Oh, I usually hate off days because I always know I have something to do when the Mariners are playing.
[01:03:58] I can sit down. I can watch them. Yeah, there will be games throughout the year that get me really pissed off or really excited or somewhere in between. But this year, man, I enjoyed off days. Like I don't know if the stress level has ever been this high
[01:04:14] in terms of me watching games this year and just the way they've blown this lead to I need every break I can get in this schedule to just reset. And I think a lot of fans feel the same way. I concur. It's really not. It's really relaxing.
[01:04:31] Instead, we sit in front of a screen in front of our computers, record a podcast and instead yell into a mic about the Mariners instead of having to watch them in real time and get mad there. Well, I think that's an acceptable coping mechanism. I agree. I agree.
[01:04:50] All right. I think that just about wraps up this edition of the Marine Layer podcast. You guys know the drill. You want to listen to the full form podcast, you can do so wherever you
