Episode 180: Do The Mariners Have A Chance At Roki Sasaki? (Mailbag)

Lyle and TJ debate the meaning of "checked in" before discussing the idea of Korean infielder Hye-Seong Kim drawing interest from the Mariners (7:31). The two of them then jump into their mailbag of questions, ranging from their chances at Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, Juan Soto hypotheticals, and more (16:50).

[00:03:38] And we welcome you to this episode of the Marine Layer Podcast, part of the Just Baseball Podcast Network, recording here on Thursday evening, November 7th.

[00:03:48] And we've finally got a name we haven't heard about all that much to talk about, Lyle.

[00:03:55] As you broached this to me today, and it's been floating in the news a little bit this week, the Mariners have actually checked in on someone, this free agency.

[00:04:03] Yes, like, Lyle, they've reached out to a free agent. Let me repeat those words.

[00:04:09] Mariners don't like free agency. Reached out to one. Who is it?

[00:04:15] Before we even get to that, can we put something to bed here?

[00:04:20] We gotta stop with this whole checked in thing in free agency.

[00:04:23] It is one of the dumbest terms, period.

[00:04:27] Because checked in could mean anything.

[00:04:29] The Rays checked in on Juan Soto.

[00:04:31] The Rays ain't signing him.

[00:04:34] What was that conversation like?

[00:04:37] Juan, we want to give you 12 years for 150.

[00:04:41] Fuck off.

[00:04:43] That's how that went.

[00:04:44] Well, you know what Juan Soto does? He's like, where are you guys playing your home games next year?

[00:04:48] And then they go, uh.

[00:04:50] He's like, oh, okay, yeah, that's what I thought.

[00:04:52] I'm not playing in a stadium that has, like, tatters falling from its roof.

[00:04:56] So that's the point.

[00:04:58] Like, the Mariners checked in on Shohei Otani, I'm sure.

[00:05:01] Actually, they didn't. They balked at the money because it wasn't a smart strategy.

[00:05:04] What does it mean they didn't check in on him?

[00:05:08] Well, sure, maybe they called.

[00:05:10] This is why checked in is so stupid.

[00:05:13] It can mean you have an offer on the table or it can mean you called for five seconds and hung up.

[00:05:18] You know what I was seeing today and throughout the last couple days after all this Rays have checked in on Juan Soto things?

[00:05:25] People are taking it and having a field day online.

[00:05:28] I saw a hundred different tweets of people quote tweeting it saying, I checked in on Sydney Sweeney.

[00:05:36] So we can use checked in on just slide in DMs.

[00:05:41] Like.

[00:05:42] Yeah.

[00:05:43] I've checked in on plenty of people.

[00:05:45] Doesn't mean they always send a message back.

[00:05:48] But.

[00:05:49] Hey, you just got to check in.

[00:05:51] You're feeling it out.

[00:05:52] That's what you're doing.

[00:05:53] Okay.

[00:05:54] Jerry.

[00:05:54] Jerry's in the process right now of sliding into DMs.

[00:05:58] Unfortunately, the Mariners are, you know, the kind of the kind of awkward kid who just doesn't get many messages back right now.

[00:06:07] Or they're the kid that everybody at school says, don't affiliate yourself with that guy.

[00:06:13] So it could be that too, because they're because they're toxic.

[00:06:17] Does that kid wear deodorant?

[00:06:20] No.

[00:06:21] Oh, no, no.

[00:06:21] He doesn't.

[00:06:22] Yeah.

[00:06:22] No.

[00:06:23] Yeah.

[00:06:24] Or that.

[00:06:25] Yeah.

[00:06:26] I mean, maybe maybe toxic's unfair, but it probably is unfair.

[00:06:30] But it bad ballpark.

[00:06:33] Guys can't hit there.

[00:06:34] They don't win a lot.

[00:06:36] It's hard.

[00:06:37] Front office doesn't have a good reputation.

[00:06:40] Right.

[00:06:40] Neither does ownership.

[00:06:42] It's cold.

[00:06:44] So checked in can mean anything.

[00:06:46] So we got to.

[00:06:47] This is me and my little preamble before we get into the show.

[00:06:50] We got to put this to rest.

[00:06:51] Checked in is like the dumbest thing ever.

[00:06:54] Like the A's could check in on Juan Soto.

[00:06:57] In case people are wondering, this podcast also checked in on Juan Soto.

[00:07:00] He's out of our budget.

[00:07:03] We tried to fork up the money to pay for him, but we couldn't do it.

[00:07:06] But we're about a probably about a million subscribers short.

[00:07:10] So if you're listening to this or watching this and you're not subscribed, we're trying

[00:07:16] to sign Juan Soto.

[00:07:16] So make sure you hit that subscribe button.

[00:07:18] Download our episodes on share with a friend.

[00:07:22] Tell him to do the same thing.

[00:07:24] Guys, we'll keep reiterating it.

[00:07:25] If you guys get us there, we'll put all our money back into the good of the people and

[00:07:31] try to win baseball games.

[00:07:32] We will give Juan Soto a blank check for whatever he wants if we have the money for it.

[00:07:37] But we can't get there without your guys' help and we can't give them the money if we don't

[00:07:41] have the money.

[00:07:41] We're not owners of a baseball team.

[00:07:43] We're just piecasters.

[00:07:44] So help us get there and we will give Juan Soto the money.

[00:07:49] Did the Mariners check in on Sydney Sweeney?

[00:07:51] You brought her up.

[00:07:53] That's the big question, I think.

[00:07:56] I doubt it.

[00:07:57] She's from Washington.

[00:07:59] Maybe she'll throw out a first pitch at some point.

[00:08:01] Has she in the past?

[00:08:04] Not at a Mariners game.

[00:08:06] Okay, so then outside of Juan Soto, I think the biggest need for the Mariners this offseason

[00:08:10] is to check in on Sydney Sweeney.

[00:08:12] Get her to the park next summer.

[00:08:15] I'm serious.

[00:08:16] This is where we're at.

[00:08:20] So this is where you draw the line in terms of what you step over and not over.

[00:08:25] So we sit here and say there's too many fireworks nights and bobblehead nights.

[00:08:30] But if Sydney Sweeney throws a first pitch, TJ says, oh, that's fine.

[00:08:33] Listen, we're talking about what the Mariners don't want to do.

[00:08:36] They don't like signing older players.

[00:08:38] They don't like multi-year contracts.

[00:08:39] We're talking about a one-day contract for someone in her 20s.

[00:08:43] Like, come on.

[00:08:45] It's a slam dunk.

[00:08:46] It's free marketing.

[00:08:48] And she'll come on the mic with us too.

[00:08:50] Right, Lyle?

[00:08:52] That might be our most viewed video ever.

[00:08:55] We did that.

[00:08:56] We're going to make it happen.

[00:08:58] So I'm asking the Mariners to check in on Sydney Sweeney for our benefit.

[00:09:02] Thank you.

[00:09:05] In conclusion, stop with check-in in free agency.

[00:09:09] You need to elaborate on what that means if you're putting that out there.

[00:09:12] Or if you hear that from somebody, why are you tweeting it out?

[00:09:15] Just wait until a deal's done.

[00:09:16] This is why Passan's the GOAT.

[00:09:18] Passan doesn't tweet these things.

[00:09:20] You know when he tweets?

[00:09:21] When deals happen.

[00:09:23] Yeah.

[00:09:24] You're right.

[00:09:25] You're right.

[00:09:26] So what do you think then John Marossi meant when he went on 7-10 this week

[00:09:31] and said the Mariners checked in on not Ha Sung Kim,

[00:09:36] one of his former countrymen in Korea who is going to be posted

[00:09:40] and could come over here to MLB this season, Ha Sung Kim, another infielder.

[00:09:46] What do you think the Mariners, what level of checking in there?

[00:09:48] Did they slide in his Instagram DMs?

[00:09:50] Did they reach out to his agent?

[00:09:52] What did they do?

[00:09:54] I'm sure there's been conversations.

[00:09:57] The Mariners are usually pretty tuned in on a lot of the international players.

[00:10:01] And Marossi did say he had actual face-to-face conversations

[00:10:04] with Justin Hollander at the GM meetings this week, which is going on.

[00:10:08] So I'm sure that didn't come from nowhere.

[00:10:11] We know that Marossi's developed at times a little bit of a nickname on Mariners Twitter

[00:10:15] that may or may not be tabbed as the Yapper,

[00:10:18] considering last offseason he said the Mariners were linked to Cody Bellinger,

[00:10:21] Yoshinobi Yamamoto.

[00:10:23] I mean, Shohei at one point.

[00:10:26] Who else am I forgetting?

[00:10:27] Literally every free agent ever he said the Mariners were linked to last year,

[00:10:29] and a lot of Mariners fans got really, really tired of it, which, again,

[00:10:33] this is why Passan only tweets when things break.

[00:10:37] Anyway, that being said, in fairness to Marossi,

[00:10:40] he has clearly had conversations at the GM meetings this week with Justin Hollander.

[00:10:44] He said that.

[00:10:45] He said Justin Hollander was talking about how second base is going to be one of their priorities

[00:10:49] this offseason for finding outside talent to help upgrade the roster.

[00:10:54] And Haesong Kim is a middle infielder and a guy who, in theory,

[00:11:00] if the Mariners signed, would play second base.

[00:11:02] So I think what he means is the Mariners have done their due diligence.

[00:11:06] They've talked to his agent.

[00:11:08] They probably want to know what his price range is.

[00:11:10] And they internally are at least going to consider it.

[00:11:14] Certainly doesn't mean they're going to do it.

[00:11:17] But unlike the Rays checking in on Juan Soto, I am sure there is some level of intrigue.

[00:11:23] It may be 5%, but it's non-zero.

[00:11:27] So let's fill in a little bit of background about Haesong Kim.

[00:11:30] He's been in Korea for the last eight years.

[00:11:33] He's a strong defender up the middle.

[00:11:35] He has a 766 career OPS in Korea.

[00:11:39] Marossi was throwing out some numbers on Thursday on 710,

[00:11:43] saying he would get a contract around two years for $15 million.

[00:11:48] If you want to wonder why the Mariners are in on Haesong Kim,

[00:11:51] that contract number, I would believe, is a huge reason why.

[00:11:55] He's in their budget, costing about $7.5 million a year.

[00:11:59] Marossi said 7 to 8, so we'll go right in the middle there with that contract projection.

[00:12:04] It's really interesting, though.

[00:12:05] He's got a very similar profile to Haesong Kim,

[00:12:10] who's already over here in Major League Baseball and is a free agent.

[00:12:13] And who we talked about on Wednesday's episode,

[00:12:15] as also a strong defender,

[00:12:17] but also has four years of Major League Baseball under his belt,

[00:12:21] and has at least shown he could be an above-average hitter in Major League Baseball.

[00:12:27] Not a great hitter, but above average.

[00:12:30] I can't say the same thing for Haesong Kim.

[00:12:35] No.

[00:12:37] If you'd like to just have me get straight into the point here,

[00:12:40] as Mark Cuban would say on Shark Tank,

[00:12:42] and for that reason,

[00:12:44] I'm out.

[00:12:47] Guys never played in the big leagues.

[00:12:48] And I know every guy that comes over internationally,

[00:12:51] that's the same case.

[00:12:52] But number one,

[00:12:54] it's pretty well known Japan is a more competitive league than Korea.

[00:12:57] People say the KBO is about equivalent to double-A competition.

[00:13:01] So you'd be paying a guy that's essentially never played over double-A level competition

[00:13:06] to come in,

[00:13:07] take a starting role on a big league team that's supposed to be contending,

[00:13:11] and ask him to translate

[00:13:13] in terms of going from the KBO to big league caliber play

[00:13:17] right away.

[00:13:19] That's a lot to ask of a guy.

[00:13:21] And if you want to look at some examples,

[00:13:24] this is not the best hitter by any stretch to ever come over from Korea.

[00:13:28] And there are guys that have come over from Korea that have really struggled.

[00:13:31] Look, in fairness to Kim,

[00:13:33] last two seasons,

[00:13:34] he's put up an 840 OPS.

[00:13:36] But an 840 OPS in the KBO

[00:13:39] doesn't scream like a guy that's going to come over

[00:13:42] and have instant success at the plate in the big leagues right away.

[00:13:45] He may play good defense,

[00:13:47] but if you're looking for a defense first, second baseman,

[00:13:50] go sign Ha-Sung Kim,

[00:13:53] who's done it and been there

[00:13:54] and had real success in the majors.

[00:13:57] The recent examples you referenced of guys coming over,

[00:14:00] let's look at Ha-Sung Kim when he came over.

[00:14:02] He had an 866 OPS in Korea

[00:14:05] before coming over in the 2021 season.

[00:14:09] His first season in Major League Baseball,

[00:14:12] Ha-Sung Kim had a 71 WRC+.

[00:14:14] Now, because of his great defense,

[00:14:16] he had about a 2.1 F-war,

[00:14:18] which is good, or a 2.1 B-war.

[00:14:20] Close.

[00:14:20] It's in the same ballpark.

[00:14:21] He was worth over two wins.

[00:14:23] Jung-Hoo Lee was an even better hitter than Ha-Sung Kim

[00:14:25] when he came over last year.

[00:14:27] Smaller sample size,

[00:14:28] I think it was just 40 games.

[00:14:29] He played with the Giants before getting hurt.

[00:14:32] He had a 900 career OPS in Korea

[00:14:35] before he came over.

[00:14:37] He had an 83 WRC+.

[00:14:40] It's not easy for these guys to come over here

[00:14:45] and blow it out of the water offensively.

[00:14:47] It's an enormous jump.

[00:14:49] And while Ha-Sung Kim, over the course of four seasons,

[00:14:52] has developed into a very valuable Major League player,

[00:14:55] in which case two years ago,

[00:14:56] he was worth over four wins

[00:14:58] while putting up a 110 WRC+.

[00:15:00] with his plus defense.

[00:15:01] That's great.

[00:15:01] It took him three years to get there.

[00:15:04] If you're thinking about this,

[00:15:05] let me ask you this question.

[00:15:06] Would you be okay signing someone

[00:15:08] for $7.5 million to put up over two wins,

[00:15:13] but his WRC plus is 71?

[00:15:15] Would you be okay with that?

[00:15:17] Answer for me is absolutely not.

[00:15:21] Same here,

[00:15:22] because that's essentially the last four and a half months

[00:15:24] of Josh Rojas this past season.

[00:15:26] Played great defense.

[00:15:27] Was a two-win player,

[00:15:29] but didn't hit.

[00:15:31] If you're gonna,

[00:15:33] if that's what you're gonna sign up for,

[00:15:34] or just roll Rojas back out there.

[00:15:37] Seven and a half million dollars for that?

[00:15:38] No.

[00:15:39] And look,

[00:15:40] Jung-Hoo Lee may still go on

[00:15:41] to have a really good big league career,

[00:15:43] but in year one,

[00:15:45] I know it was a small sample.

[00:15:47] Got a 640 OPS.

[00:15:49] He looked overmatched at times

[00:15:50] against big league pitching.

[00:15:51] To be fair,

[00:15:52] he didn't strike out much,

[00:15:53] but he wasn't exactly a productive bat.

[00:15:56] If the best hitter in Korea

[00:15:58] has that type of struggle,

[00:16:00] I don't love what it means for Haesung Kim.

[00:16:02] Because,

[00:16:03] again,

[00:16:03] if he's on a two-year deal,

[00:16:05] it's not like Jung-Hoo Lee

[00:16:06] being on a six-year contract

[00:16:08] where he's gonna have time

[00:16:09] to get acclimated.

[00:16:10] Maybe by year three,

[00:16:11] he's really good.

[00:16:12] You don't have that time

[00:16:14] with Haesung Kim

[00:16:14] on a two-year contract.

[00:16:16] You don't have that time,

[00:16:17] period.

[00:16:18] This window,

[00:16:19] I hate to say it,

[00:16:20] it's closing

[00:16:20] for the Mariners.

[00:16:21] You've got maybe two years left,

[00:16:23] max,

[00:16:24] before you start to see guys

[00:16:25] get traded

[00:16:25] if they're not gonna extend them.

[00:16:27] So,

[00:16:27] you gotta capitalize on that.

[00:16:29] And what could be

[00:16:31] a 70 WRC plus hitter

[00:16:33] that you'd sign

[00:16:33] for seven and a half million dollars?

[00:16:35] No.

[00:16:36] Absolutely not.

[00:16:37] Get serious

[00:16:38] about signing real bats

[00:16:40] with big league success

[00:16:41] to get on this infield

[00:16:43] for your team.

[00:16:44] Do not take flyers anymore.

[00:16:47] No more flyers!

[00:16:49] The math,

[00:16:49] I think,

[00:16:50] is pretty simple

[00:16:50] on this one.

[00:16:51] You could think

[00:16:52] about this this way.

[00:16:54] If they sign

[00:16:55] Haesung Kim

[00:16:56] before Haesung Kim signs,

[00:16:57] like say someone blows

[00:16:58] the number for Haesung Kim

[00:16:59] out of the water

[00:17:00] that I'm gonna project here.

[00:17:02] This

[00:17:04] is probably

[00:17:04] your fallback option,

[00:17:05] which is still not good.

[00:17:06] But if you think about

[00:17:07] the math this way,

[00:17:08] so Haesung Kim,

[00:17:09] we project it's like

[00:17:10] three for 45

[00:17:11] or four for 60.

[00:17:12] $15 million a year,

[00:17:13] give or take.

[00:17:14] Let's say it's

[00:17:14] three for 45.

[00:17:16] Like,

[00:17:16] that's the price tag

[00:17:17] that the Mariners

[00:17:18] would be okay

[00:17:19] getting Haesung Kim

[00:17:20] to Seattle.

[00:17:22] The decision

[00:17:23] to make

[00:17:24] would be,

[00:17:25] do we want to pay

[00:17:26] 30 more total million dollars,

[00:17:28] not per year,

[00:17:29] total million dollars

[00:17:30] for a more proven player

[00:17:32] or save

[00:17:33] 30 million dollars

[00:17:34] total

[00:17:34] with an unproven player?

[00:17:37] $30 million

[00:17:38] in the grand scheme

[00:17:39] of things

[00:17:39] over

[00:17:40] the course of three years,

[00:17:42] it's not that much money.

[00:17:44] So,

[00:17:44] it's a pretty

[00:17:46] easy decision.

[00:17:48] Maybe

[00:17:48] Haesung Kim,

[00:17:49] who is going to play

[00:17:50] next year at age 26,

[00:17:52] could eventually be

[00:17:53] an average

[00:17:54] Major League Baseball player.

[00:17:56] But,

[00:17:58] not for,

[00:17:59] not next year.

[00:18:00] Sorry.

[00:18:01] The easy answer

[00:18:02] should be to pay

[00:18:03] Haesung Kim

[00:18:04] the extra money.

[00:18:05] Right.

[00:18:05] That's our answer.

[00:18:06] Yeah.

[00:18:06] What would the Mariners

[00:18:07] and the ownership

[00:18:08] say about that?

[00:18:10] You know what I,

[00:18:11] you know what I think

[00:18:12] they'd say

[00:18:12] about giving that much

[00:18:14] more money

[00:18:14] to Haesung Kim?

[00:18:15] Haesung Kim,

[00:18:15] I'd say,

[00:18:18] sorry,

[00:18:18] sorry,

[00:18:18] I'm trying to,

[00:18:19] I'm trying to hold it back here.

[00:18:20] I'm really trying to hold it back.

[00:18:21] I'm trying to,

[00:18:22] not a smart strategy!

[00:18:23] Oh,

[00:18:24] sorry,

[00:18:24] I just,

[00:18:25] sometimes it just comes out.

[00:18:27] It's like a sneeze.

[00:18:27] I tried to hold it back

[00:18:28] and I failed.

[00:18:29] It's like a sneeze.

[00:18:30] I know,

[00:18:30] it really is like a sneeze.

[00:18:32] I tried not to do it

[00:18:33] and it just,

[00:18:33] it was impossible.

[00:18:34] Sorry.

[00:18:35] Oh,

[00:18:35] my bad.

[00:18:36] I'm going to work on it.

[00:18:37] I really am.

[00:18:40] Unless you have any more notes on this,

[00:18:41] we'll get into the mailbag.

[00:20:09] Okay,

[00:20:10] first up on the mailbag,

[00:20:11] we have

[00:20:12] Braden

[00:20:13] who sent us

[00:20:14] uh

[00:20:14] uh

[00:20:15] or responded to us

[00:20:17] on Twitter

[00:20:17] and this was his question.

[00:20:19] Uh

[00:20:20] he said

[00:20:20] he laid out

[00:20:21] a trade proposal

[00:20:22] for us.

[00:20:23] Let me read

[00:20:23] or sorry

[00:20:24] not just a trade proposal.

[00:20:26] This is an

[00:20:26] off-season proposal

[00:20:27] for the Mariners.

[00:20:28] Let me know

[00:20:29] how this sounds to you.

[00:20:30] He suggests

[00:20:31] Glaber Torres

[00:20:32] signs in Seattle

[00:20:33] four years

[00:20:34] for 48 million dollars.

[00:20:35] And then the Mariners

[00:20:36] trade for

[00:20:37] Vlad Guerrero Jr.

[00:20:38] for Ty Pete

[00:20:39] Harry Ford

[00:20:40] Cole Young

[00:20:41] Tyler Locklear

[00:20:42] and Emerson Hancock.

[00:20:43] And his question

[00:20:44] underneath is

[00:20:45] is this a huge

[00:20:46] send yes?

[00:20:47] Do you want

[00:20:47] a good farm

[00:20:48] let me

[00:20:49] reword this.

[00:20:51] Is this a yes

[00:20:51] for a trade?

[00:20:52] Do you want

[00:20:53] a good farm system

[00:20:54] or a good

[00:20:54] major league team?

[00:20:57] Let's start

[00:20:58] with Glaber here

[00:20:59] and then get to

[00:20:59] Vladi.

[00:21:01] I'm not saying

[00:21:02] this is

[00:21:03] not going to be

[00:21:04] the ballpark

[00:21:04] of what Glaber Torres

[00:21:05] gets in a contract.

[00:21:06] That does feel

[00:21:07] about right

[00:21:08] that he's going

[00:21:08] to get somewhere

[00:21:09] between

[00:21:10] 10,

[00:21:11] 12,

[00:21:12] 15 million dollars

[00:21:13] a year.

[00:21:14] Do I want

[00:21:15] to see the Mariners

[00:21:16] give him that money

[00:21:17] over four years?

[00:21:18] That feels like

[00:21:20] you're taking

[00:21:20] an awful gamble.

[00:21:21] Now he is younger.

[00:21:23] He's not going

[00:21:24] to be in his

[00:21:24] mid-30s

[00:21:25] when you sign him

[00:21:26] or anything like that.

[00:21:27] But

[00:21:28] doesn't play

[00:21:29] the greatest defense

[00:21:30] in the world.

[00:21:31] That's putting it lightly.

[00:21:32] Isn't hitting

[00:21:33] in Yankee Stadium

[00:21:34] anymore?

[00:21:35] Hasn't been

[00:21:36] over the moon

[00:21:37] productive

[00:21:38] offensively?

[00:21:39] At least not in

[00:21:40] 2024.

[00:21:41] He was about

[00:21:41] league average.

[00:21:43] Are we signing

[00:21:44] up for this?

[00:21:46] So you could

[00:21:47] probably get

[00:21:48] similar production

[00:21:50] that Glaber

[00:21:51] Torres would bring

[00:21:52] you for less.

[00:21:53] I fully believe

[00:21:54] that.

[00:21:55] Now consider

[00:21:56] in this scenario

[00:21:57] your future

[00:21:58] second base

[00:21:58] options

[00:22:01] are

[00:22:02] limited

[00:22:02] especially

[00:22:03] trading

[00:22:04] Cole Young

[00:22:04] away.

[00:22:05] I know a lot

[00:22:05] of people

[00:22:05] want to see

[00:22:06] Cole Young

[00:22:06] play at second

[00:22:07] base this year

[00:22:08] for the Mariners.

[00:22:09] He would be

[00:22:09] gone.

[00:22:10] So

[00:22:11] what else

[00:22:12] would you do

[00:22:13] at second

[00:22:14] base here?

[00:22:15] I think

[00:22:15] Lyle

[00:22:16] like thinking

[00:22:16] about this

[00:22:17] in the

[00:22:17] grand scheme

[00:22:17] if you

[00:22:18] include

[00:22:18] Vladdy

[00:22:19] in this

[00:22:19] too

[00:22:19] I would

[00:22:20] be okay

[00:22:20] with it

[00:22:21] because

[00:22:22] at that

[00:22:23] point

[00:22:23] like if

[00:22:24] you're adding

[00:22:24] Vladdy

[00:22:25] you're okay

[00:22:25] adding salary.

[00:22:27] So

[00:22:28] then paying

[00:22:29] 12 million

[00:22:30] dollars a year

[00:22:30] for Glaber

[00:22:30] Torres

[00:22:31] should be

[00:22:31] less of an

[00:22:32] issue.

[00:22:33] And of

[00:22:33] course

[00:22:33] there's some

[00:22:34] other things

[00:22:36] to consider

[00:22:36] here too

[00:22:37] if we really

[00:22:37] want to

[00:22:38] expand

[00:22:38] beyond this.

[00:22:40] Like you

[00:22:40] think about

[00:22:41] the money

[00:22:41] you can

[00:22:41] make the

[00:22:42] money

[00:22:43] less

[00:22:44] if

[00:22:45] you

[00:22:45] can dump

[00:22:46] some

[00:22:47] salary

[00:22:47] otherwise

[00:22:47] which will

[00:22:48] cost you

[00:22:48] more

[00:22:48] prospects

[00:22:50] but

[00:22:51] this

[00:22:51] offseason

[00:22:52] outline

[00:22:52] is showing

[00:22:53] you you're

[00:22:53] willing to

[00:22:54] push your

[00:22:54] chips in

[00:22:55] to win

[00:22:55] in which

[00:22:56] case dumping

[00:22:57] that salary

[00:22:57] if you

[00:22:58] need to

[00:22:59] would be

[00:23:00] something they

[00:23:00] would try

[00:23:01] and do

[00:23:01] anyways.

[00:23:02] Sure.

[00:23:04] Listen

[00:23:05] if the Mariners

[00:23:06] are going to

[00:23:07] try to sign

[00:23:07] a player like

[00:23:08] that sign

[00:23:08] me up

[00:23:09] because that

[00:23:09] means

[00:23:10] they're trying

[00:23:11] to invest

[00:23:11] in a winning

[00:23:12] roster.

[00:23:12] I know

[00:23:13] Glaber Torres

[00:23:13] isn't perfect

[00:23:14] but you're not

[00:23:15] signing him with

[00:23:16] the idea that

[00:23:16] he's going

[00:23:16] to be average

[00:23:17] if you were

[00:23:17] going to

[00:23:17] give him

[00:23:18] that money

[00:23:18] that means

[00:23:19] the Mariners

[00:23:19] believe

[00:23:20] whether it

[00:23:20] be right

[00:23:21] in your

[00:23:22] eyes

[00:23:22] the listeners

[00:23:22] or our

[00:23:23] eyes

[00:23:23] the podcasters

[00:23:24] or not

[00:23:26] that they

[00:23:27] believe he

[00:23:27] is going

[00:23:27] to be one

[00:23:28] of the

[00:23:28] league's

[00:23:28] better

[00:23:29] second

[00:23:30] baseman

[00:23:30] not an

[00:23:31] MVP

[00:23:31] but he's

[00:23:32] going to

[00:23:32] be a

[00:23:32] productive

[00:23:32] second

[00:23:33] baseman

[00:23:33] and above

[00:23:33] average

[00:23:34] second

[00:23:34] baseman

[00:23:35] and I'd

[00:23:35] be all

[00:23:36] for that

[00:23:36] because they

[00:23:37] need an

[00:23:37] upgrade

[00:23:38] at that

[00:23:38] position

[00:23:39] so

[00:23:39] all right

[00:23:40] fair enough

[00:23:41] you're just

[00:23:42] going to have

[00:23:42] to accept

[00:23:43] that he

[00:23:43] is going

[00:23:43] to come

[00:23:43] with deficiencies

[00:23:44] and that he's

[00:23:45] not a perfect

[00:23:45] player

[00:23:46] maybe Perry Hill

[00:23:47] can work

[00:23:47] with him

[00:23:47] and his

[00:23:48] defense

[00:23:48] and can at

[00:23:49] least make

[00:23:50] him league

[00:23:50] average

[00:23:50] that would

[00:23:51] help

[00:23:51] and if he's

[00:23:52] going to hit

[00:23:53] enough

[00:23:53] and be a

[00:23:54] doubles guy

[00:23:54] and get on

[00:23:55] base

[00:23:55] great

[00:23:55] I'd pay

[00:23:56] 12 million

[00:23:57] dollars a

[00:23:57] year

[00:23:57] every single

[00:23:58] year for

[00:23:59] that

[00:24:00] but we have

[00:24:01] to see if

[00:24:01] they're going

[00:24:01] to do it

[00:24:02] now Vladdy

[00:24:04] let me

[00:24:04] preface it

[00:24:05] let me

[00:24:06] preface this

[00:24:06] with saying

[00:24:08] you don't

[00:24:08] have to

[00:24:08] convince me

[00:24:10] about getting

[00:24:11] Vladimir Guerrero

[00:24:12] Jr.

[00:24:12] on the

[00:24:13] Mariners

[00:24:13] if you were

[00:24:14] going to

[00:24:14] trade for

[00:24:14] this guy

[00:24:14] and you

[00:24:15] were going

[00:24:15] to give

[00:24:15] him a

[00:24:15] blank check

[00:24:16] for an

[00:24:16] extension

[00:24:17] awesome

[00:24:18] couldn't

[00:24:19] be more

[00:24:19] on board

[00:24:21] but for

[00:24:22] one year

[00:24:23] of them

[00:24:24] does this

[00:24:25] not feel

[00:24:25] like a

[00:24:26] pretty heavy

[00:24:27] package to

[00:24:27] be giving

[00:24:28] up this

[00:24:28] is more

[00:24:29] than the

[00:24:29] Padres

[00:24:29] gave up

[00:24:30] to get

[00:24:31] one or

[00:24:31] sorry this

[00:24:32] is more

[00:24:32] than the

[00:24:32] Yankees

[00:24:33] gave up

[00:24:33] to the

[00:24:34] Padres

[00:24:34] to get

[00:24:34] Juan

[00:24:34] Soto

[00:24:36] it is

[00:24:38] but I'm

[00:24:39] going to

[00:24:39] guess this

[00:24:39] is under

[00:24:40] the assumption

[00:24:40] Vladdy signing

[00:24:41] an extension

[00:24:41] if you trade

[00:24:42] for him

[00:24:44] even if he

[00:24:44] is still

[00:24:46] feels like

[00:24:46] way too

[00:24:47] much you'd

[00:24:48] be forced

[00:24:48] to pay

[00:24:48] like if

[00:24:50] he's signing

[00:24:50] an extension

[00:24:51] great

[00:24:51] okay but

[00:24:55] but the

[00:24:55] Blue Jays

[00:24:56] are not

[00:24:56] trading him

[00:24:57] saying oh

[00:24:57] well you're

[00:24:58] probably going

[00:24:58] to get him

[00:24:59] to sign

[00:24:59] an extension

[00:24:59] so therefore

[00:25:00] you have

[00:25:00] to give

[00:25:01] us more

[00:25:01] no one

[00:25:02] way or

[00:25:02] another

[00:25:02] it's it's

[00:25:03] one year

[00:25:04] of Vladimir

[00:25:04] Guerrero

[00:25:04] jr.

[00:25:05] you're getting

[00:25:05] in the

[00:25:05] trade and

[00:25:06] that's what

[00:25:06] the trade

[00:25:07] details will

[00:25:08] feature

[00:25:08] to remind

[00:25:09] people one

[00:25:10] more time

[00:25:10] what this

[00:25:11] trade says

[00:25:11] it would be

[00:25:12] is the

[00:25:12] Mariners

[00:25:12] would give

[00:25:13] up Ty

[00:25:13] Pete

[00:25:13] Cole

[00:25:14] Young

[00:25:14] Harry Ford

[00:25:15] Tyler

[00:25:15] Lachler

[00:25:15] and Emerson

[00:25:16] Hancock

[00:25:17] for one

[00:25:18] year of

[00:25:19] Vladdy

[00:25:19] that's

[00:25:19] a lot

[00:25:20] but if

[00:25:21] you're

[00:25:21] Jerry

[00:25:22] and you

[00:25:22] believe

[00:25:22] you can

[00:25:22] get a

[00:25:23] deal

[00:25:23] done

[00:25:23] with

[00:25:23] Vladdy

[00:25:24] that's

[00:25:24] worth it

[00:25:25] even if

[00:25:25] it is

[00:25:25] an overpay

[00:25:27] like the

[00:25:27] Blue Jays

[00:25:28] aren't trading

[00:25:28] him with

[00:25:29] the expectation

[00:25:29] that Seattle

[00:25:30] is extending

[00:25:31] him but

[00:25:31] Jerry's

[00:25:32] trading

[00:25:32] those

[00:25:33] prospects

[00:25:33] away

[00:25:34] with the

[00:25:35] anticipation

[00:25:35] that Vladdy

[00:25:36] stays

[00:25:36] long term

[00:25:37] him

[00:25:38] okay yes

[00:25:39] but I'm

[00:25:40] still standing

[00:25:40] on the fact

[00:25:41] that you

[00:25:41] should not

[00:25:42] have to

[00:25:42] give up

[00:25:43] that much

[00:25:43] again look

[00:25:44] at the

[00:25:44] Soto trade

[00:25:45] you're gonna

[00:25:46] have to give

[00:25:46] up prospects

[00:25:47] this is a

[00:25:48] decent amount

[00:25:49] the five guys

[00:25:50] that were thrown

[00:25:50] into this

[00:25:51] package

[00:25:51] I'd cut it

[00:25:52] in half

[00:25:53] pick three

[00:25:54] of them

[00:25:55] and you

[00:25:55] have to

[00:25:56] take at

[00:25:56] least one

[00:25:57] of

[00:25:58] Cole Young

[00:25:58] or Harry

[00:25:59] Ford out

[00:26:01] I mean

[00:26:02] I'd even

[00:26:02] do Ty

[00:26:02] Pete

[00:26:03] Harry

[00:26:03] and Cole

[00:26:03] for it

[00:26:06] still seems

[00:26:07] like a lot

[00:26:10] if

[00:26:10] Vladimir

[00:26:11] Guerrero

[00:26:11] Jr.

[00:26:12] would come

[00:26:13] to Seattle

[00:26:13] for Ty

[00:26:14] Pete

[00:26:14] Harry

[00:26:15] Ford

[00:26:15] and Cole

[00:26:15] Young

[00:26:16] I would

[00:26:16] do it

[00:26:16] even if

[00:26:17] it isn't

[00:26:18] overpaid

[00:26:18] I don't

[00:26:19] care

[00:26:19] I legitimately

[00:26:22] don't

[00:26:22] look

[00:26:23] especially

[00:26:24] if you're

[00:26:24] gonna sign

[00:26:24] him to

[00:26:24] the extension

[00:26:25] yes

[00:26:25] I'm not

[00:26:26] saying

[00:26:26] don't

[00:26:27] make

[00:26:28] the

[00:26:38] all

[00:26:38] of

[00:26:38] that

[00:26:38] because

[00:26:39] again

[00:26:39] I don't

[00:26:40] know

[00:26:40] if

[00:26:40] you

[00:26:40] would

[00:26:41] now

[00:26:41] okay

[00:26:42] you

[00:26:42] know

[00:26:42] what

[00:26:42] thinking

[00:26:42] thinking

[00:26:43] about

[00:26:43] this

[00:26:43] out

[00:26:43] loud

[00:26:44] to be

[00:26:44] fair

[00:26:44] to be

[00:26:45] fair

[00:26:47] Michael

[00:26:47] King

[00:26:47] went back

[00:26:48] to the

[00:26:48] Padres

[00:26:48] in that

[00:26:49] trade

[00:26:49] and he

[00:26:50] was

[00:26:50] somewhat

[00:26:51] of a

[00:26:51] proven

[00:26:52] big

[00:26:52] leaguer

[00:26:53] so doing

[00:26:53] some

[00:26:54] verbal

[00:26:54] processing

[00:26:55] here

[00:26:55] there are

[00:26:56] no

[00:26:56] big

[00:26:56] leaguers

[00:26:56] attached

[00:26:57] in this

[00:26:57] trade

[00:26:57] and

[00:26:58] maybe

[00:26:58] that's

[00:26:58] why

[00:26:58] you'd

[00:26:58] have

[00:26:58] to

[00:26:58] give

[00:26:59] up

[00:26:59] higher

[00:26:59] end

[00:26:59] prospects

[00:27:00] so

[00:27:01] that

[00:27:02] could

[00:27:02] be

[00:27:03] five

[00:27:04] guys

[00:27:04] just

[00:27:05] seems

[00:27:05] like

[00:27:05] a

[00:27:05] lot

[00:27:05] if

[00:27:06] it

[00:27:06] was

[00:27:06] three

[00:27:06] maybe

[00:27:07] more

[00:27:07] to

[00:27:07] your

[00:27:07] point

[00:27:08] all

[00:27:08] right

[00:27:10] we

[00:27:10] keep

[00:27:11] telling

[00:27:11] the

[00:27:11] Mariners

[00:27:11] to

[00:27:11] stop

[00:27:12] threading

[00:27:12] the

[00:27:12] needle

[00:27:12] in

[00:27:13] their

[00:27:13] off

[00:27:13] season

[00:27:13] plans

[00:27:14] I'm

[00:27:14] going to

[00:27:14] ask

[00:27:14] the

[00:27:14] two

[00:27:15] of

[00:27:33] would

[00:27:33] him

[00:27:34] seeing

[00:27:35] the

[00:27:35] trade

[00:27:36] package

[00:27:36] they

[00:27:36] give

[00:27:36] up

[00:27:36] resonate

[00:27:37] with

[00:27:37] him

[00:27:37] at

[00:27:37] all

[00:27:37] I

[00:27:38] don't

[00:27:38] think

[00:27:38] Vladdy

[00:27:38] is

[00:27:38] exactly

[00:27:39] tied

[00:27:39] in

[00:27:40] on

[00:27:40] MLB

[00:27:40] prospects

[00:27:41] no

[00:27:41] but

[00:27:41] it

[00:27:42] would

[00:27:42] definitely

[00:27:42] let

[00:27:43] you

[00:27:43] trade

[00:27:43] for

[00:27:43] him

[00:27:44] yeah

[00:27:45] like

[00:27:45] we're

[00:27:45] trying

[00:27:46] to

[00:27:46] because

[00:27:46] if

[00:27:46] Vladdy

[00:27:47] is

[00:27:47] on

[00:27:47] the

[00:27:47] open

[00:27:47] market

[00:27:47] the

[00:27:48] Mariners

[00:27:48] are

[00:27:48] not

[00:27:48] the

[00:27:48] only

[00:27:48] ones

[00:27:49] offering

[00:27:49] a

[00:27:49] prospect

[00:27:49] package

[00:27:50] but

[00:27:51] the

[00:27:51] Mariners

[00:27:51] sure

[00:27:51] as

[00:27:51] hell

[00:27:51] want

[00:27:52] him

[00:27:53] so

[00:27:53] make

[00:27:53] sure

[00:27:53] that

[00:27:53] happens

[00:27:55] you're

[00:27:56] like

[00:27:56] oh

[00:27:56] well

[00:27:57] we

[00:27:57] gave

[00:27:57] up

[00:27:57] what

[00:27:57] we

[00:27:58] thought

[00:27:58] was

[00:27:58] appropriate

[00:27:58] value

[00:27:59] and

[00:27:59] they

[00:27:59] took

[00:27:59] someone

[00:28:00] else's

[00:28:00] package

[00:28:00] like

[00:28:01] no

[00:28:01] go

[00:28:01] get

[00:28:02] him

[00:28:04] to

[00:28:05] that

[00:28:05] point

[00:28:06] it

[00:28:06] was

[00:28:07] like

[00:28:07] the

[00:28:07] Luis

[00:28:07] Castillo

[00:28:07] trade

[00:28:08] where

[00:28:08] people

[00:28:08] said

[00:28:09] look

[00:28:09] the

[00:28:09] Mariners

[00:28:09] gave

[00:28:09] up

[00:28:09] a

[00:28:10] lot

[00:28:10] for

[00:28:10] him

[00:28:10] but

[00:28:10] you

[00:28:10] had

[00:28:10] to

[00:28:10] because

[00:28:11] otherwise

[00:28:11] somebody

[00:28:11] was

[00:28:12] going

[00:28:12] to

[00:28:13] give

[00:28:13] up

[00:28:13] more

[00:28:14] pay

[00:28:14] what

[00:28:15] the

[00:28:15] Reds

[00:28:16] wanted

[00:28:16] and

[00:28:17] like

[00:28:19] we

[00:28:19] talked

[00:28:19] about

[00:28:20] at

[00:28:20] the

[00:28:20] time

[00:28:20] before

[00:28:21] this

[00:28:21] podcast

[00:28:21] had

[00:28:21] ever

[00:28:22] been

[00:28:22] started

[00:28:22] the

[00:28:23] Rangers

[00:28:23] had

[00:28:23] given

[00:28:23] up

[00:28:23] a

[00:28:23] flurry

[00:28:24] of

[00:28:24] prospects

[00:28:25] for

[00:28:25] Luis

[00:28:25] Castillo

[00:28:26] would

[00:28:29] have

[00:28:30] been

[00:28:30] like

[00:28:30] look

[00:28:31] at

[00:28:31] all

[00:28:31] the

[00:28:31] prospects

[00:28:31] the

[00:28:32] Rangers

[00:28:32] gave

[00:28:32] up

[00:28:32] no

[00:28:32] we

[00:28:32] probably

[00:28:33] would

[00:28:33] have

[00:28:33] been

[00:28:33] jealous

[00:28:33] saying

[00:28:34] he's

[00:28:34] going

[00:28:34] to

[00:28:34] pitch

[00:28:34] in

[00:28:35] our

[00:28:35] division

[00:28:35] we

[00:28:36] could

[00:28:36] have

[00:28:36] traded

[00:28:36] for

[00:28:36] him

[00:28:37] so

[00:28:38] as we

[00:28:38] keep

[00:28:39] reminding

[00:28:40] ourselves

[00:28:40] looking

[00:28:40] back

[00:28:40] at

[00:28:41] that

[00:28:41] trade

[00:28:41] we

[00:28:41] would

[00:28:41] do

[00:28:42] it

[00:28:42] 100

[00:28:42] times

[00:28:43] out

[00:28:43] of

[00:28:43] 100

[00:28:43] well

[00:28:44] considering

[00:28:45] Noel

[00:28:45] he's

[00:28:46] been

[00:28:46] awful

[00:28:46] and

[00:28:47] was

[00:28:47] juicing

[00:28:47] so

[00:28:47] far

[00:28:48] Edwin

[00:28:48] Arroyo

[00:28:48] has

[00:28:50] not

[00:28:50] been

[00:28:51] the

[00:28:51] same

[00:28:51] guy

[00:28:51] since

[00:28:51] he

[00:28:52] left

[00:28:52] Seattle

[00:28:52] system

[00:28:53] yeah

[00:28:53] Levi

[00:28:54] made

[00:28:55] his

[00:28:55] way

[00:28:55] back

[00:28:55] to

[00:28:55] the

[00:28:55] Mariners

[00:28:56] system

[00:28:56] at

[00:28:56] one

[00:28:57] point

[00:28:57] last

[00:28:57] year

[00:28:57] so

[00:28:58] yeah

[00:28:58] yep

[00:29:00] okay

[00:29:00] next

[00:29:01] question

[00:29:01] this

[00:29:02] is

[00:29:02] from

[00:29:03] to get

[00:29:03] the

[00:29:04] name

[00:29:04] right

[00:29:04] this

[00:29:05] is

[00:29:05] from

[00:29:05] futuristic

[00:29:06] gorilla

[00:29:07] and

[00:29:08] he

[00:29:08] asks

[00:29:08] should

[00:29:09] the

[00:29:09] Mariners

[00:29:10] go

[00:29:10] for

[00:29:10] Roki

[00:29:10] Sasaki

[00:29:12] yes

[00:29:15] yeah

[00:29:15] it's a

[00:29:16] pretty

[00:29:16] simple

[00:29:16] yes

[00:29:17] does

[00:29:18] Roki

[00:29:18] Sasaki

[00:29:19] want

[00:29:19] to

[00:29:19] go

[00:29:20] to

[00:29:20] the

[00:29:20] Mariners

[00:29:21] no

[00:29:23] however

[00:29:24] can

[00:29:24] I

[00:29:24] make

[00:29:25] a

[00:29:25] pitch

[00:29:25] to

[00:29:25] Roki

[00:29:25] Sasaki

[00:29:27] I'm

[00:29:27] going to

[00:29:27] look

[00:29:27] at

[00:29:27] the

[00:29:27] camera

[00:29:28] here

[00:29:28] I'm

[00:29:29] going to

[00:29:29] make

[00:29:29] a

[00:29:29] pitch

[00:29:29] to

[00:29:29] Roki

[00:29:29] Sasaki

[00:29:31] listen

[00:29:33] I know

[00:29:33] you're

[00:29:34] thinking

[00:29:34] about

[00:29:35] coming

[00:29:35] over

[00:29:36] to

[00:29:36] play

[00:29:36] in

[00:29:36] Major

[00:29:36] League

[00:29:36] Baseball

[00:29:37] and

[00:29:37] that's

[00:29:37] fantastic

[00:29:39] Dodgers

[00:29:39] Dodgers

[00:29:39] are

[00:29:40] very

[00:29:40] intriguing

[00:29:40] option

[00:29:41] for

[00:29:41] you

[00:29:42] I

[00:29:42] know

[00:29:42] the

[00:29:42] Mets

[00:29:43] have

[00:29:43] been

[00:29:43] courting

[00:29:43] you

[00:29:43] I

[00:29:43] know

[00:29:44] the

[00:29:44] Cubs

[00:29:44] have

[00:29:45] been

[00:29:45] courting

[00:29:45] you

[00:29:46] I

[00:29:46] know

[00:29:46] there

[00:29:46] are

[00:29:47] plenty

[00:29:47] of

[00:29:47] big

[00:29:47] market

[00:29:48] options

[00:29:49] that

[00:29:49] might

[00:29:50] tickle

[00:29:50] your

[00:29:50] fancy

[00:29:50] to

[00:29:51] come

[00:29:51] over

[00:29:51] here

[00:29:51] to

[00:29:51] Major

[00:29:51] League

[00:29:51] Baseball

[00:29:53] but

[00:29:53] if

[00:29:53] you're

[00:29:53] looking

[00:29:54] to

[00:29:54] come

[00:29:54] over

[00:29:54] early

[00:29:56] you're

[00:29:56] not

[00:29:56] going

[00:29:56] making

[00:29:57] as

[00:29:57] much

[00:29:57] money

[00:29:57] meaning

[00:29:58] technically

[00:29:59] every

[00:29:59] team

[00:29:59] can

[00:30:00] afford

[00:30:00] you

[00:30:01] and

[00:30:02] when

[00:30:03] you're

[00:30:03] not

[00:30:03] making

[00:30:03] as

[00:30:04] much

[00:30:04] money

[00:30:04] and

[00:30:04] you're

[00:30:05] going

[00:30:05] to

[00:30:05] be

[00:30:05] put

[00:30:05] on

[00:30:05] the

[00:30:05] standard

[00:30:06] six

[00:30:07] year

[00:30:08] rookie

[00:30:09] deal

[00:30:09] with

[00:30:10] three

[00:30:11] league

[00:30:11] minimum

[00:30:11] years

[00:30:12] and

[00:30:12] three

[00:30:12] arbitration

[00:30:13] years

[00:30:15] it's

[00:30:17] risky

[00:30:18] for

[00:30:18] you

[00:30:19] meaning

[00:30:19] if

[00:30:20] you

[00:30:20] go

[00:30:20] somewhere

[00:30:20] that

[00:30:22] don't

[00:30:22] pitch

[00:30:23] as well

[00:30:24] you're

[00:30:29] there

[00:30:29] was

[00:30:30] a

[00:30:30] place

[00:30:30] that

[00:30:31] you

[00:30:31] would

[00:30:31] have

[00:30:31] the

[00:30:31] lowest

[00:30:32] ERA

[00:30:32] than

[00:30:32] anywhere

[00:30:33] else

[00:30:33] what

[00:30:34] if

[00:30:34] I

[00:30:34] told

[00:30:34] you

[00:30:34] that

[00:30:35] T-Mobile

[00:30:35] Park

[00:30:35] is

[00:30:36] the

[00:30:36] best

[00:30:37] place

[00:30:59] open

[00:30:59] market

[00:31:00] in

[00:31:00] six

[00:31:00] years

[00:31:01] you

[00:31:02] cash

[00:31:02] in

[00:31:02] on

[00:31:03] your

[00:31:03] 300

[00:31:03] to

[00:31:04] 400

[00:31:04] million

[00:31:05] dollars

[00:31:05] you

[00:31:05] have

[00:31:05] rightfully

[00:31:06] earned

[00:31:06] as

[00:31:07] a

[00:31:07] 28

[00:31:07] year

[00:31:08] old

[00:31:08] in

[00:31:08] free

[00:31:08] agency

[00:31:08] that

[00:31:09] the

[00:31:09] Mariners

[00:31:09] will

[00:31:09] never

[00:31:10] meet

[00:31:10] you

[00:31:11] can

[00:31:11] go

[00:31:11] on

[00:31:11] your

[00:31:11] happy

[00:31:12] way

[00:31:12] to

[00:31:12] the

[00:31:13] Dodgers

[00:31:13] or

[00:31:14] the

[00:31:14] Yankees

[00:31:15] or

[00:31:29] with

[00:31:29] the

[00:31:29] ball

[00:31:30] park

[00:31:30] just

[00:31:31] take

[00:31:31] a

[00:31:31] look

[00:31:31] at

[00:31:31] the

[00:31:31] rotation

[00:31:32] Roki

[00:31:32] yeah

[00:31:33] so

[00:31:35] let's

[00:31:35] fill

[00:31:35] people

[00:31:36] in

[00:31:36] a

[00:31:36] little

[00:31:36] bit

[00:31:36] and

[00:31:36] connect

[00:31:37] the

[00:31:37] dots

[00:31:37] if

[00:31:38] you

[00:31:38] have

[00:31:38] not

[00:31:38] heard

[00:31:38] of

[00:31:38] Roki

[00:31:39] Sasaki

[00:31:39] and

[00:31:39] have

[00:31:39] been

[00:31:39] living

[00:31:40] under

[00:31:40] a

[00:31:40] rock

[00:31:42] Yoshinobu

[00:31:42] Yamamoto

[00:31:42] got

[00:31:43] 12

[00:31:43] years

[00:31:43] for

[00:31:43] $325

[00:31:44] million

[00:31:45] from

[00:31:45] the

[00:31:45] Dodgers

[00:31:46] this

[00:31:46] past

[00:31:47] winter

[00:31:48] there

[00:31:48] is

[00:31:49] a

[00:31:49] real

[00:31:49] belief

[00:31:50] Roki

[00:31:51] Sasaki

[00:31:51] is a

[00:31:52] step

[00:31:53] better

[00:31:53] than

[00:31:54] Yoshinobu

[00:31:55] Yamamoto

[00:31:55] there's

[00:31:56] a

[00:31:56] real

[00:31:57] belief

[00:31:57] that

[00:31:57] just

[00:31:57] as

[00:31:58] a

[00:31:58] pure

[00:31:58] pitcher

[00:31:59] he's

[00:32:00] better

[00:32:00] than

[00:32:00] Shohei

[00:32:01] this

[00:32:02] might

[00:32:02] be

[00:32:02] the

[00:32:02] best

[00:32:02] pitcher

[00:32:03] to

[00:32:03] come

[00:32:03] over

[00:32:03] from

[00:32:04] Japan

[00:32:04] in

[00:32:04] who

[00:32:05] knows

[00:32:05] how

[00:32:05] long

[00:32:06] he

[00:32:06] is

[00:32:07] so

[00:32:07] young

[00:32:07] he

[00:32:08] is

[00:32:08] so

[00:32:08] good

[00:32:08] he

[00:32:09] throws

[00:32:09] triple

[00:32:10] digits

[00:32:10] with

[00:32:11] ease

[00:32:12] and

[00:32:12] a

[00:32:13] guy

[00:32:13] that

[00:32:13] if

[00:32:13] he

[00:32:13] was

[00:32:14] going

[00:32:14] to

[00:32:14] wait

[00:32:14] till

[00:32:15] those

[00:32:16] six

[00:32:16] years

[00:32:16] were

[00:32:16] up

[00:32:17] in

[00:32:17] Japan

[00:32:17] before

[00:32:17] coming

[00:32:18] over

[00:32:19] he

[00:32:19] might

[00:32:20] get

[00:32:20] $400

[00:32:21] million

[00:32:21] from

[00:32:22] a

[00:32:22] team

[00:32:22] he

[00:32:23] really

[00:32:23] might

[00:32:24] but

[00:32:24] now

[00:32:25] there's

[00:32:25] all this

[00:32:25] speculation

[00:32:26] that's

[00:32:26] similar

[00:32:27] to

[00:32:27] Shohei

[00:32:27] when

[00:32:27] he

[00:32:28] came

[00:32:28] over

[00:32:28] Roki

[00:32:29] Sasaki

[00:32:30] may

[00:32:30] not

[00:32:30] care

[00:32:31] about

[00:32:31] waiting

[00:32:31] for

[00:32:31] the

[00:32:32] money

[00:32:32] he

[00:32:33] sounds

[00:32:33] like

[00:32:33] he

[00:32:33] just

[00:32:33] wants

[00:32:34] to

[00:32:34] play

[00:32:34] in

[00:32:34] Major

[00:32:34] League

[00:32:35] Baseball

[00:32:35] and

[00:32:35] if

[00:32:36] he

[00:32:36] decides

[00:32:36] to

[00:32:36] come

[00:32:37] over

[00:32:37] this

[00:32:38] winner

[00:32:38] and

[00:32:38] his

[00:32:39] team

[00:32:39] in

[00:32:39] the

[00:32:40] NPV

[00:32:40] in

[00:32:41] Japan

[00:32:41] agree

[00:32:41] to

[00:33:01] until

[00:33:02] he

[00:33:02] hits

[00:33:02] arbitration

[00:33:03] so

[00:33:03] if

[00:33:04] those

[00:33:04] of

[00:33:04] you

[00:33:04] that

[00:33:04] are

[00:33:04] out

[00:33:05] there

[00:33:05] saying

[00:33:05] the

[00:33:05] Mariners

[00:33:06] already

[00:33:06] have

[00:33:06] the

[00:33:06] best

[00:33:06] rotation

[00:33:06] in

[00:33:07] baseball

[00:33:07] they've

[00:33:07] got

[00:33:07] five

[00:33:08] starters

[00:33:08] correct

[00:33:09] I

[00:33:10] don't

[00:33:10] care

[00:33:10] if

[00:33:11] you

[00:33:12] can

[00:33:12] pay

[00:33:12] Roki

[00:33:12] Sasaki

[00:33:14] $2

[00:33:15] million

[00:33:15] a

[00:33:16] year

[00:33:17] to

[00:33:18] play

[00:33:18] for

[00:33:18] your

[00:33:18] baseball

[00:33:18] team

[00:33:19] you're

[00:33:20] making

[00:33:20] amends

[00:33:20] to

[00:33:21] make

[00:33:21] it

[00:33:21] happen

[00:33:22] plain

[00:33:22] and

[00:33:23] simple

[00:33:24] maybe

[00:33:24] then

[00:33:25] you

[00:33:25] feel

[00:33:25] better

[00:33:25] about

[00:33:25] the

[00:33:26] idea

[00:33:26] of

[00:33:26] trading

[00:33:26] a

[00:33:26] pitcher

[00:33:27] for

[00:33:27] a

[00:33:27] bat

[00:33:27] too

[00:33:28] there

[00:33:29] is

[00:33:30] absolutely

[00:33:30] no

[00:33:31] excuse

[00:33:31] to

[00:33:31] not

[00:33:32] be

[00:33:32] on

[00:33:32] Roki

[00:33:32] Sasaki

[00:33:33] if

[00:33:34] he

[00:33:34] comes

[00:33:34] over

[00:33:34] from

[00:33:34] Japan

[00:33:53] next

[00:33:53] year

[00:33:54] there

[00:33:55] is

[00:33:55] probably

[00:33:56] a

[00:33:56] massive

[00:33:56] influx

[00:33:57] of

[00:33:58] Japanese

[00:33:59] endorsement

[00:33:59] cash

[00:34:00] circling

[00:34:01] around

[00:34:01] the

[00:34:02] Dodgers

[00:34:02] because

[00:34:02] of

[00:34:02] those

[00:34:03] two

[00:34:03] and

[00:34:04] it

[00:34:04] would

[00:34:04] be

[00:34:04] oh

[00:34:04] so

[00:34:05] convenient

[00:34:05] for him

[00:34:06] for Sasaki

[00:34:07] to be

[00:34:07] in that

[00:34:08] rotation

[00:34:08] as well

[00:34:08] I will

[00:34:09] note

[00:34:09] on the

[00:34:11] positive

[00:34:11] end

[00:34:11] for the

[00:34:12] Mariners

[00:34:12] in this

[00:34:12] situation

[00:34:13] if Roki

[00:34:14] waits

[00:34:14] or the

[00:34:15] team

[00:34:15] he plays

[00:34:16] for in

[00:34:16] Japan

[00:34:16] waits

[00:34:17] until

[00:34:17] after

[00:34:17] I think

[00:34:18] the

[00:34:18] 15th

[00:34:18] of

[00:34:18] December

[00:34:19] to post

[00:34:19] him

[00:34:20] that's

[00:34:20] the

[00:34:20] next

[00:34:21] signing

[00:34:22] class

[00:34:22] the

[00:34:22] next

[00:34:23] international

[00:34:23] class

[00:34:24] and

[00:34:24] the

[00:34:25] Mariners

[00:34:25] would

[00:34:25] have

[00:34:26] the

[00:34:26] most

[00:34:26] money

[00:34:26] to

[00:34:26] spend

[00:34:27] of

[00:34:28] any

[00:34:29] organization

[00:34:29] in

[00:34:30] baseball

[00:34:30] which

[00:34:31] is

[00:34:31] about

[00:34:31] seven

[00:34:31] and a

[00:34:32] half

[00:34:32] million

[00:34:32] dollars

[00:34:32] so

[00:34:33] if

[00:34:33] they

[00:34:33] wait

[00:34:33] and

[00:34:34] you

[00:34:35] know

[00:34:35] it's

[00:34:35] not

[00:34:35] a

[00:34:36] certain

[00:34:36] if

[00:34:36] he'll

[00:34:36] get

[00:34:36] posted

[00:34:37] because

[00:34:37] him

[00:34:38] and

[00:34:38] the

[00:34:38] team

[00:34:38] are

[00:34:38] still

[00:34:39] in

[00:34:39] negotiations

[00:34:40] on

[00:34:41] that

[00:34:42] kind

[00:34:42] of

[00:34:42] thing

[00:34:43] remember

[00:34:43] that

[00:35:06] pretty

[00:35:06] clear

[00:35:07] that

[00:35:07] money

[00:35:07] is

[00:35:07] not

[00:35:08] a

[00:35:08] huge

[00:35:08] priority

[00:35:09] to

[00:35:09] Sasaki

[00:35:09] like

[00:35:10] this

[00:35:11] second

[00:35:12] because

[00:35:13] if

[00:35:13] it

[00:35:13] was

[00:35:13] he'd

[00:35:14] probably

[00:35:14] stay

[00:35:14] in

[00:35:14] Japan

[00:35:14] for

[00:35:15] two

[00:35:15] years

[00:35:15] and

[00:35:15] cash

[00:35:16] out

[00:35:16] for

[00:35:16] like

[00:35:17] 400

[00:35:17] million

[00:35:17] dollars

[00:35:19] in

[00:35:20] 2026

[00:35:22] but

[00:35:22] he's

[00:35:22] not

[00:35:22] going

[00:35:22] to

[00:35:22] wait

[00:35:23] or

[00:35:23] 2027

[00:35:24] it

[00:35:24] would

[00:35:24] be

[00:35:24] but

[00:35:25] he's

[00:35:25] not

[00:35:25] he

[00:35:25] doesn't

[00:35:26] it

[00:35:26] doesn't

[00:35:26] sound

[00:35:26] like

[00:35:26] he

[00:35:26] wants

[00:35:26] to

[00:35:26] wait

[00:35:27] that

[00:35:27] long

[00:35:27] so

[00:35:28] if

[00:35:28] he's

[00:35:28] posted

[00:35:29] after

[00:35:29] December

[00:35:29] 15th

[00:35:30] he

[00:35:30] will

[00:35:31] still

[00:35:31] pitch

[00:35:31] in

[00:35:31] the

[00:35:31] majors

[00:35:32] in

[00:35:32] 2025

[00:35:32] but

[00:35:33] you

[00:35:33] can

[00:35:33] use

[00:35:34] next

[00:35:34] year's

[00:35:35] signing

[00:35:35] money

[00:35:36] internationally

[00:35:36] to pay

[00:35:37] him

[00:35:38] great

[00:35:40] sign

[00:35:40] me

[00:35:40] up

[00:35:41] that

[00:35:41] being

[00:35:41] said

[00:35:42] if

[00:35:42] you're

[00:35:42] Roki

[00:35:43] Sasaki

[00:35:43] while

[00:35:44] I'd

[00:35:44] love

[00:35:44] for

[00:35:44] it

[00:35:44] to

[00:35:56] 4

[00:35:56] million

[00:35:56] dollars

[00:35:57] to

[00:35:57] pitch

[00:35:57] for

[00:35:57] the

[00:35:57] Dodgers

[00:35:58] then

[00:35:58] taking

[00:35:59] 7.5

[00:35:59] million

[00:35:59] dollars

[00:36:00] to

[00:36:00] pitch

[00:36:00] for

[00:36:00] the

[00:36:00] M's

[00:36:01] because

[00:36:01] he's

[00:36:02] also

[00:36:02] going

[00:36:02] to

[00:36:03] get

[00:36:03] a ton

[00:36:03] of

[00:36:04] endorsement

[00:36:04] money

[00:36:04] too

[00:36:05] which

[00:36:05] will

[00:36:05] only

[00:36:05] be

[00:36:05] inflated

[00:36:06] if

[00:36:06] he

[00:36:06] goes

[00:36:06] to

[00:36:07] the

[00:36:07] Dodgers

[00:36:07] he

[00:36:08] would

[00:36:08] get

[00:36:08] endorsement

[00:36:09] money

[00:36:09] in

[00:36:09] Seattle

[00:36:09] too

[00:36:09] I

[00:36:10] really

[00:36:10] don't

[00:36:10] think

[00:36:10] the

[00:36:10] Mariners

[00:36:11] have

[00:36:11] a

[00:36:11] bad

[00:36:11] pitch

[00:36:12] for

[00:36:12] him

[00:36:12] of

[00:36:12] any

[00:36:13] of

[00:36:13] the

[00:36:13] free

[00:36:13] agents

[00:36:14] they

[00:36:14] would

[00:36:15] have

[00:36:15] the

[00:36:26] make

[00:36:26] a

[00:36:26] pitch

[00:36:27] for

[00:36:27] him

[00:36:28] clearly

[00:36:29] the

[00:36:29] Mariners

[00:36:30] pitch

[00:36:30] to

[00:36:30] Shohei

[00:36:31] did

[00:36:31] not

[00:36:31] work

[00:36:33] and

[00:36:34] I

[00:36:34] think

[00:36:34] any

[00:36:35] sort

[00:36:35] of

[00:36:36] courting

[00:36:36] that

[00:36:37] Shohei

[00:36:37] does

[00:36:37] will

[00:36:37] be

[00:36:38] significantly

[00:36:39] more

[00:36:39] valuable

[00:36:40] to

[00:36:40] Sasaki

[00:36:41] than

[00:36:41] anything

[00:36:41] the

[00:36:41] Mariners

[00:36:42] could

[00:36:42] offer

[00:36:43] I

[00:36:44] agree

[00:36:45] why

[00:36:46] haven't

[00:36:46] we

[00:36:46] talked

[00:36:46] about

[00:36:46] this

[00:36:47] more

[00:36:47] as

[00:36:47] we're

[00:36:47] thinking

[00:36:48] this

[00:36:48] out

[00:36:48] see

[00:36:48] this

[00:36:49] is

[00:36:49] why

[00:36:49] all

[00:36:49] you

[00:36:49] guys

[00:36:49] are

[00:36:50] the

[00:36:50] best

[00:36:50] you

[00:36:50] got

[00:36:50] us

[00:36:52] thinking

[00:36:52] talking

[00:36:53] you

[00:36:54] got

[00:36:54] us

[00:36:54] processing

[00:36:55] why

[00:36:55] haven't

[00:36:56] we

[00:36:56] thought

[00:36:56] about

[00:36:56] this

[00:36:56] more

[00:36:57] I'm

[00:36:58] not

[00:36:58] saying

[00:36:58] it's

[00:36:58] going

[00:36:58] to

[00:36:59] happen

[00:36:59] but

[00:37:00] the

[00:37:00] idea

[00:37:00] of

[00:37:00] the

[00:37:00] Mariners

[00:37:01] paying

[00:37:01] 4

[00:37:01] million

[00:37:02] to

[00:37:02] 5

[00:37:02] million

[00:37:03] dollars

[00:37:03] to

[00:37:03] sign

[00:37:04] Roki

[00:37:04] Sasaki

[00:37:04] for

[00:37:05] six

[00:37:05] years

[00:37:05] which

[00:37:06] could

[00:37:06] free

[00:37:06] you

[00:37:06] up

[00:37:07] to

[00:37:07] feel

[00:37:07] comfortable

[00:37:08] trading

[00:37:09] an

[00:37:09] arm

[00:37:09] for a

[00:37:10] legit

[00:37:10] bat

[00:37:10] why

[00:37:11] haven't

[00:37:12] we

[00:37:12] thought

[00:37:12] about

[00:37:12] this

[00:37:13] would

[00:37:13] there

[00:37:13] be

[00:37:14] any

[00:37:14] arm

[00:37:14] off

[00:37:14] the

[00:37:14] table

[00:37:15] then

[00:37:15] if

[00:37:16] they

[00:37:16] signed

[00:37:16] Sasaki

[00:37:18] I

[00:37:19] still

[00:37:19] wouldn't

[00:37:19] trade

[00:37:20] Brian

[00:37:20] Wu

[00:37:20] a

[00:37:21] ton

[00:37:21] of

[00:37:21] club

[00:37:22] control

[00:37:22] we

[00:37:22] saw

[00:37:23] what

[00:37:23] the

[00:37:23] upside

[00:37:23] was

[00:37:23] he

[00:37:24] can

[00:37:24] be

[00:37:24] a

[00:37:24] legit

[00:37:24] ace

[00:37:26] as

[00:37:26] crazy

[00:37:26] as

[00:37:26] it

[00:37:26] sounds

[00:37:27] he

[00:37:27] might

[00:37:27] be

[00:37:27] the

[00:37:27] guy

[00:37:28] I

[00:37:50] get

[00:37:50] value

[00:37:50] for

[00:37:50] Brian

[00:37:51] Wu

[00:37:52] are

[00:38:03] we

[00:38:04] talking

[00:38:04] Brian

[00:38:05] Wu

[00:38:05] for

[00:38:05] Jackson

[00:38:06] Holiday

[00:38:06] fine

[00:38:06] I'd

[00:38:07] make

[00:38:07] that

[00:38:07] trade

[00:38:07] sure

[00:38:08] yeah

[00:38:08] that's

[00:38:09] that's

[00:38:09] market

[00:38:10] value

[00:38:10] like

[00:38:10] a

[00:38:11] really

[00:38:11] young

[00:38:11] really

[00:38:12] high

[00:38:12] end

[00:38:13] bat

[00:38:13] is

[00:38:13] market

[00:38:14] value

[00:38:14] fine

[00:38:15] if

[00:38:16] it's

[00:38:16] going

[00:38:16] to

[00:38:16] be

[00:38:16] somebody

[00:38:16] like

[00:38:17] that

[00:38:17] with

[00:38:17] a

[00:38:17] ton

[00:38:17] of

[00:38:17] club

[00:38:18] control

[00:38:18] and

[00:38:19] the

[00:38:19] upside

[00:38:19] to

[00:38:19] be one of the best infielders in all of major league baseball in jackson holiday sure but

[00:38:25] that's what i mean aside from that probably wouldn't do it so if that's the case and you

[00:38:31] have the chance to have miller and woo together for five years sasaki there for six years that's

[00:38:35] still a real core of a rotation together that's three of five guys you could keep together a long

[00:38:40] time if you could not move off those two that'd be ideal and then if you do not think that one of

[00:38:48] george kirby and logan gilbert are going to sign an extension then you can explore trading those guys

[00:38:55] a little bit more frequently at that point because you'd have an arm that could replace them and you

[00:39:00] could get serious serious reinforcements back for them offensively i think the mariners should

[00:39:07] print out baseball savant's park factor list and then walk into the room with roki sasaki and slam

[00:39:14] it down on the table that's legitimately what i think they should do it's like oh you want to

[00:39:19] pitch well do you want to have a low era high strikeout rate things that get pitchers paid

[00:39:24] a lot of money who does it better than us yeah nobody mm-hmm seriously you didn't even answer

[00:39:32] the question why haven't we talked about this more until right now we just didn't think about it

[00:39:36] well because it's not been an assurance he's going to be posted it has always been a maybe

[00:39:41] that he would be posted after that number that yamamoto got last offseason everyone just assumed

[00:39:48] roki sees that number is like okay i'm going to pitch three more seasons in npb and then i'm going to

[00:39:54] beat that number by a wide margin which makes sense which i'm going to be honest i think he should do

[00:40:02] because i've seen the argument for it the argument for it is he feels like he would rather

[00:40:07] face uh challenge himself a little bit more now and face you know big league hitters make himself

[00:40:13] better for when he's a free agent at what age 28 if he came over right now which fine but thinking

[00:40:21] about this like you don't have to prove yourself to big leaguers and you'll still get paid more money

[00:40:26] in in less time right that part i i understand a little bit less but it's you know it's his his

[00:40:34] career that he makes a decision to do but overall again the answer to your question is because it

[00:40:39] hasn't been an assurance that he was going to be posted it's always been a rumor fair but if he does

[00:40:46] get posted the mariners even if he's not willing to talk like they should still find a way just try

[00:40:51] try and get a meeting with him yeah you have so much to offer on the west coast history of japanese

[00:40:58] players best pitching ballpark in baseball nobody develops pitchers better at this point than the

[00:41:04] mariners do yeah you've got a real sales pitch and again this is right up their alley because they

[00:41:08] don't have to pay a bunch of money if rokey sasaki was coming over when he's eligible to make the big

[00:41:12] contract mariners wouldn't even pick up the phone yeah and the team's in a budget crunch what's better

[00:41:20] for a budget crunch than a guy making the league minimum but yet giving you the production of

[00:41:25] someone who's worth probably 30 to 40 million dollars a year mm-hmm sounds pretty good to me and he

[00:41:32] dominates and he throws 102 miles an hour and oh by the way uh on this scouting scale he is an 80 grade

[00:41:38] fastball and an 80 grade splitter think about it sounds like a worthwhile pitch to me just think about

[00:41:47] all the names shohei yamamoto kodai sanga all pitchers that have come over from japan and been stars in

[00:41:56] major league baseball stars again yamamoto got 325 million dollars and they say rokey sasaki

[00:42:04] is the best of all of them and legitimately has the upside to be the best pitcher in baseball

[00:42:10] sign me up sounds pretty good to me let's get to our next question this is from retcon fn on youtube

[00:42:17] the question is what are your top three realistic bats to get this team back on track keyword there

[00:42:24] lyle realistic not what we want but what for the what the mariners say like their realistic options

[00:42:33] this offseason kyle tucker

[00:42:39] very realistic um okay i wrote out three names and we can start to rip through some of these

[00:42:45] questions since we spent a lot of time on sasaki i wrote out christian walker now you can debate if

[00:42:53] that's realistic or not it should be he is not going to cost the king's ransom so i put him on here

[00:42:57] sign christian walker to play first trade for brandon lao to play second trade for alec boehm to play

[00:43:03] third sign me right up for that offseason signed seal delivered so you did some trades there too i did not

[00:43:09] i did all free agents so realistic first base option i wrote down is carlos santana

[00:43:17] connection with the mariners coming off a good year last year he's old definitely is old

[00:43:23] mariners we have noted the mariners need some leadership in the clubhouse so you could say

[00:43:29] it's either carlos santana or justin turner both are available on the free agent

[00:43:33] market this season santana was i think a little bit better of a hitter and he was a really good

[00:43:38] defender this year too at first base so that's the pitch for carlos santana i think ha sung kim's

[00:43:44] realistic if he's getting a three-year deal he brings everything you would really want in a baseball

[00:43:51] player like a slightly above league average bat wanting a proven option he is proven to hit in a

[00:43:57] pitcher's park in san diego for the last three seasons and his wrc plus at second base would be

[00:44:03] higher than any second base option the mariners have had since robinson cano and then the last one i

[00:44:10] have is jose iglesias who will i don't think cost a ton and is coming off a pretty good season

[00:44:18] limited sample size but still a pretty decent season even though he's historically not a great hitter

[00:44:24] like those are what i deem currently realistic i would love to be pleasantly surprised that these

[00:44:29] are laughable realistic options and that they signed someone for more money so you think me saying

[00:44:35] christian walker is actually shooting too high for the moon not really no if he gets a three-year deal

[00:44:41] i don't think that's unrealistic all right yeah it's probably the top end of what they will do

[00:44:49] right but that's why i also wrote out two trades because you can sign one you could trade for two

[00:44:55] more if you go get brandon allowed to play second you get alec moment to play third and you get

[00:44:59] christian walker to play first yeah i'd look at this lineup and say with this pitching staff

[00:45:04] this team can go make a run in the playoffs this team can contend for a pennant in the american league

[00:45:08] they just have to get into the field with those three on the infield you can get there

[00:45:14] yeah okay nope no pressure guys no not at all not at all it's not that expensive i'm just gonna

[00:45:22] say that about christian walker he's not gonna be that expensive you can you can afford it believe it

[00:45:27] or not okay next question this is from ellie on instagram and she says you have to give up three

[00:45:37] mariners to get juan soto who do you give up i wrote out essentially a rule for myself on this one

[00:45:46] because it would be so easy to say that i could give up like three guys in the bullpen or the three

[00:45:52] worst mariners on the mariners 25 man roster just to just to watch lyle squirm i'll say i'll give up

[00:45:57] dylan moore josh rojas and i'll throw in a d's like a like an everyday player and luke raley right

[00:46:06] i'll say i'll give up those three for juan soto like that's a pretty easy yes but that's too easy

[00:46:12] so i'm gonna i'm writing myself a rule for this i would get a i would give up any three players on

[00:46:18] the mariners roster for juan soto the rules are that cal rally's off the table and that you cannot

[00:46:24] choose more than one player from the rotation now notice that rule says i would give up julio rodriguez

[00:46:33] for juan soto because two years apart and soto's been a more consistent big leaguer so you'd opt to

[00:46:43] choose offense over defense yes in terms of just an overall baseball player juan soto's been more

[00:46:51] consistent julio's defense and center is fantastic but i think you could go find a good fielding center

[00:46:56] fielder for not that much and you know their bat would probably not suffice but that's fine because

[00:47:04] you'd have juan soto he's not a elite defender anymore but you could have victor robles play

[00:47:10] center field most of the year and just have juan soto either in a corner or dh and that's that right

[00:47:16] it's and it's a tough one i know not everyone not all mariner fans would give up julio for juan soto

[00:47:21] but if you're telling me that 10 years of juan soto is available and i would if and i had to give

[00:47:28] up julio rodriguez i'd probably do that at this moment check back next offseason that could change

[00:47:35] but right now i would i'd do it too again not everybody's gonna agree but let's say this loud

[00:47:44] and clear about juan soto he is called the modern day ted williams yeah i'd trade just about anything

[00:47:55] for that yep julio like julio's profile is more common in major league baseball history than juan

[00:48:06] soto's is correct sometimes to get the unicorn you got to give up something that's going to hurt

[00:48:13] except for cal raleigh cal raleigh is off limits because you can't find switch hitting top offensive

[00:48:19] catchers who are also great framers and good at throwing out runners and ultimate team guys you

[00:48:24] don't mind those guys and as good with this pitching staff as he is right yeah correct but any of the

[00:48:31] five in the rotation alongside julio it would really hurt but i'd do it for 10 years of juan soto remember

[00:48:36] 10 years of juan soto you know what juan soto is going to be doing in the last year of that

[00:48:42] contract by the way probably have a 125 wrc plus instead of a 160

[00:48:50] sounds pretty good to me can we get 40 year old one or no that would be 36 year old juan soto

[00:48:56] i'd take him right now instead of 26 yeah oh 36 year old juan soto would be the best hitter on the team

[00:49:02] yeah yeah yeah so yes i'm giving it up as i've said and i will continue to say i would give one

[00:49:13] soto a billion dollars this second to play for the mariners if that meant you had to give up some

[00:49:19] pieces of your team right now that would hurt for him yeah i'd give it up do you have like a rule or

[00:49:25] are you in in lockstep with me well when this question was asked i wanted to have some fun and

[00:49:32] just be like yeah can i just give up players at the bottom of the roster for juan soto so you can

[00:49:35] keep everybody but the baseball gods may say yeah you're not getting away with that we need more from

[00:49:41] you so if that's the case you talking out your rule i like that rule don't give up cal raleigh you

[00:49:49] can't give up your whole rotation you can only give up one guy max but other than that guys are

[00:49:55] on the table if you had to give up some more everyday guys yeah i'd do it there is no other

[00:50:02] one i mean i was gonna say there is no other juan soto in baseball i would call him the third best

[00:50:09] hitter in baseball at this point the only other two guys that are ahead of them are also going to be

[00:50:13] first ballot hall of famers i would say judge and show hey yeah there are not there are not many

[00:50:20] juan soto's out there and judge and show hey a lot older than juan soto is and they are

[00:50:26] while they might be better right now they don't have the type of profile that soto has as sustainable

[00:50:35] as it can be long term now judge walks a lot so to give judge credit it's not like he doesn't have

[00:50:39] a good approach but there's just something different about what soto does it is next level

[00:50:46] in the batter's box and he's 26 yeah can we give some more context to that age again so we've talked

[00:50:52] about the bryce miller thing for for one soto that one soto is younger than bryce miller is uh

[00:50:58] but since you brought up aaron judge soto's walkier and aaron judge's rookie year are the same age

[00:51:08] aaron judge remember in 2017 broke onto the scene 50 plus homers as a rookie uh that's his first year

[00:51:14] in the big leagues so at age 25 was in his walk here playing next to aaron judge well judge broke

[00:51:23] into the league in 16 and he wasn't very good in the 20 plus and he used 24 he stunk and got sent

[00:51:29] right down to the minors right and then broke out after that right at at 25 but i think yeah but 25 was

[00:51:36] still his full rookie year yeah yeah he won rookie of the year that year yeah so let's get to our next

[00:51:42] question this is from dane on instagram the question is do you think if the mariners relocated

[00:51:48] they'd be able to hit the ball i'm sure it would help to not be in seattle and not have such tough

[00:51:58] hitting environments but ultimately it's about the talent of the players on the field they might hit a

[00:52:03] little more i don't think you'd see it be night and day it's it look ultimately this team has to get

[00:52:09] the roster better that's what it's about while it may provide some complications like it did for teo or

[00:52:15] so he says it is not all because of the ballpark itself why guys just can't hit there are road guys

[00:52:22] that come here and hit it is about the players on the team and you've got to get the roster better

[00:52:27] offensively that is what it boils down to here's what i can guarantee if they move to denver they

[00:52:32] would score more runs yeah that would that would happen but you know how else they would score more

[00:52:38] runs if they built another dome i think they'd also score more runs just such a unique environment

[00:52:43] but to answer your question yes they would score more runs if they moved away but there are also ways

[00:52:48] to to offset that your pitching staff would be significantly worse if you moved this rotation

[00:52:55] would not be the best in baseball and it wouldn't be the best in franchise history if you moved to

[00:52:59] colorado yeah right yeah it'd probably be no offense to these guys they'd probably be average

[00:53:08] right yeah that's about right so that's that's just how it is the environment benefits some and hurts

[00:53:14] others all right we got two more questions to go this one's pretty fun this one comes from

[00:53:22] jacob mayor on instagram and he says who are the five most disliked players by mariners fandom all

[00:53:29] time and where's alex bregman somebody didn't like our comments in the last show about saying we wanted

[00:53:35] alex bregman here clearly which get a grip just kidding we we love you jacob we appreciate all the

[00:53:41] questions we know you listen a lot shout out to you but this team needs alex bregman you know i don't

[00:53:47] think alex bregman's on a top five list of most hated mariners opponents ever by the fans i don't

[00:53:54] think so but here who who here's who is okay let's set this up what player do mariners fans hate most all

[00:54:05] time the first guy on my list is super obvious alex rodriguez i think is easily the most hated person

[00:54:15] all time by mariners fans i think the number two in my waking memory is jose altuve pretty easily

[00:54:24] and that's universal across baseball so it counts for the mariners but then after that it gets a little

[00:54:30] bit more interesting i'm gonna put abe toro on there because my dislike spans league-wide

[00:54:38] and fan base-wide so he's got to be on that list i chose one more cheating astro carlos correa

[00:54:48] i don't think people like correa all that much especially from his time in houston and then the

[00:54:54] last guy is a recent addition to the list next hector naris

[00:54:59] so hector naris screaming at julio has earned himself a spot on this top five list now this list

[00:55:05] for some context is my list i've been alive since 1998 i have no memory of the older players that

[00:55:15] some of you listening might have really hated in the 90s or even the 80s i would have no idea because

[00:55:20] i wasn't alive then but in my memory this is it we have a couple of similar guys i have a rod on here

[00:55:30] you have to i had altuve on here you have to because somebody from that 2017 astros team

[00:55:36] is going to be on the list and to be fair the core four of that offense still get booed pretty much every

[00:55:41] time they come to seattle altuve and bregman get booed a lot george springer still gets booed when he

[00:55:45] comes to town from toronto carlos correa still gets booed when he's here with the twins but i still just

[00:55:50] went with altuve he seems to get the biggest share of the pie for it he seems to really get

[00:55:58] booed the hardest by mariners fans and honestly by fans period when they travel other places so

[00:56:04] i have a round now too they after that i had some fun with it with some more recent guys

[00:56:11] jesse winker he really got booed when he came back to town and people didn't exactly seem like

[00:56:17] they were the biggest jesse winker fans in the world when he was in seattle so he's on this

[00:56:22] check out i mean you weren't at that met series he was getting booed like people let him have it

[00:56:29] so take your word for it that's three i was trying to think if anybody from that angels fight is really

[00:56:38] worthy of being on the list there's like like phil nevin but he he doesn't count because he was a

[00:56:44] manager and that was mostly about him so i didn't include anybody from that angels fight you included

[00:56:48] hector naris which is probably more spot on so my final two sean figgins maybe the most disappointing

[00:56:57] mariner ever and you still he'll and you still hear people talk about their disdain for that guy

[00:57:03] because i don't think he was well liked either just as a guy so that's four and the last one

[00:57:12] cole ervin cole ervin whose father is the seattle mariners is it still dislike though with cole ervin

[00:57:26] or is it almost like or do mariner fans actually kind of feel bad for him now no they don't

[00:57:33] it's still cole ervin it's more mostly funny it's mostly funny but the the narrative still gets driven

[00:57:41] every time he takes them out against the ms so because that's still going three years later yeah

[00:57:47] he's on this list no rendone i thought about it but what has he ever specifically done to the

[00:57:55] mariners he's more of a meme sat in the dugout and tried to instigate a fight while injured

[00:58:02] yeah so that goes back to saying should i pick anybody from that 2022 angels fight but

[00:58:07] i don't know if he's the guy i most think about when i think about that fight when i think about

[00:58:13] that fight i think about phil nevin because he totally instigated it i think about andrew wance

[00:58:17] who was the pitcher who was throwing at everybody and then i think about rafael not soriano how am i

[00:58:25] blanking on oh iglesias duh i don't know how i was blanking on throwing uh throwing the gum onto the

[00:58:31] field yeah because he chucked the gum in the cooler and all that that's who i think about from that

[00:58:35] fight less redone yeah so well that would require rendone being healthy and playing and active and

[00:58:42] caring at all about major league baseball well he does he does he's shown that really oh that's a guy

[00:58:50] that's a guy who plays with fire with passion love of the game they're gonna make a love of the game

[00:58:55] two movie about anthony rendone kevin costner is gonna choose the cast he's gonna direct it and say

[00:58:59] you're gonna cameo on this if you have a if you have a top five list though of that differs from

[00:59:06] ours of top five most disliked mariners opponents players drop us a comment on youtube let us know send

[00:59:12] us a dm something comment on the comment on our podcast post our quotes and let us know i'd be

[00:59:19] curious to i'd be curious to hear out because i think outside of the top two you can make an argument

[00:59:23] for a lot of guys they seriously do right so one more time before our last question my list was

[00:59:28] a rod altuve sean figgins jesse winker cole ervin and mine was a rod altuve abe the legend toro carlos

[00:59:38] correa hector neris i can't wait till abe's a mariner again at some point in his career it's gonna

[00:59:42] happen and you're gonna be forced to face the music let's hope not the last one on instagram

[00:59:50] comes from b adams 247 on instagram and the this is more of a statement to say matt boyd gave up

[00:59:59] one run in 11 and two-thirds innings in the playoffs time to split up the willer the miller slash woo

[01:00:05] bromance frowny face so don't think so unfortunately for the sake of this listener i don't think that's

[01:00:19] happening in any way shape or form i i hate to break it to you because clearly this person's a matt

[01:00:25] boyd fan but matt boyd's pitching on year-to-year contracts at this point is in his 30s he was the

[01:00:33] last guy in the bullpen for the mariners in 2022 i don't think the mariners have any interest in giving

[01:00:40] up brian woo or bryce miller to bring back matt boyd and listen matt boyd loves here his interview

[01:00:47] after they clinched the playoffs was awesome but they're not they're not giving up woo or miller

[01:00:53] no way not for that again if they sign rokey sasaki maybe but not for not for matt boyd i have a couple

[01:01:00] of context points here with matt boyd so la would you consider brian woo like a bulldog that's gonna go

[01:01:07] out there and just eat up as many innings as possible just in general would you consider him

[01:01:13] that right now he hasn't accumulated enough innings for that so okay so okay good that's the answer i'm

[01:01:21] looking for thank you so keeping that in context brian woo pitched the same amount of innings this

[01:01:29] year as matt boyd has the last three seasons combined well matt boyd threw 39 innings this year

[01:01:41] total yeah you're not sticking him in the rotation next year i'm sorry yeah listen listen b.adams

[01:01:47] 247 on instagram obviously we appreciate all the questions we every fan thinks a little bit differently

[01:01:54] you're probably a big matt boyd fan which we don't blame you again he's a seattle legend and was on the

[01:01:59] playoff team and had that awesome interview and people still root for him we still root for him

[01:02:03] so like we don't we don't want to take away your own opinion or anything like that if that's how you

[01:02:09] feel that's how you feel but i would say i would separate your love for matt boyd and the idea of

[01:02:17] trading away brian woo or bryce miller you're you're again you're talking about two guys that had sub three

[01:02:23] eras this year and have five years of club control last thing did we not learn our lesson this year

[01:02:30] from signing a player who who in part i guess because he had an amazing playoff run the year

[01:02:38] before did we not learn our lesson with that who am i talking about lyle great playoff run the year

[01:02:45] before and then signed him mitch garver yeah how'd that turn out well he's gonna turn it around in 2025

[01:02:54] odd year mitch garver that that's to the level where cope of coping we're at exactly exactly not

[01:03:02] great it's it and it's this it's a similar profile to mitch garver played what 60 something games for

[01:03:07] the rangers in 2023 before he signed with the mariners had an amazing postseason he played more

[01:03:13] like 90 games but yeah it's not great he he did not play a full season like matt boyd did not pitch a

[01:03:19] full season and then had an excellent playoff performance and then signed in seattle and stunk

[01:03:25] so don't would not want matt boyd to suffer the same fate fair all right that was a good mailbag as
