And Hey, wow, the Mariners want a game here on Sunday. 00:01:08 Speaker 3: Yeah, let's go. 00:01:09 Speaker 2: I don't care, let's just rip the band aid off. What an absolute disgrace of a road trip. 00:01:15 Speaker 1: They have had some bad road trips this year, I mean, and that one just blew it out of the water. 00:01:20 Speaker 2: Disgraceful, embarrassing, lifeless. What do you want to say? What else can you possibly say? You didn't simply get out played, you didn't simply get beat. The things around the margins looked ridiculous. I mean, the base running and the lack of hustle, especially from Randy, and then the things around the margins, like the situational awareness, all of it is just ridiculous. 00:01:47 Speaker 1: And the fact they can't hit. Besides Sunday they can't hit. 00:01:51 Speaker 2: I mean, especially especially with runners in scoring position. 00:01:55 Speaker 1: It just makes them, it just makes all of these problems look so much worse where all of these things are compiling. And then on top of that, at most you can score like three runs in a game at most, and the Mariners were barely doing that. On this road trip. The Mariners went like thirty plate appearances between getting a hit with the runner and scoring position. Thirty plate appearances. I mean, how so bad? 00:02:18 Speaker 2: How many more things can you tack on with these guys? Again, They're already really bad and situational baseball They're bad around the margins, like defense, base running, decision making, they're the worst team in baseball against lefties, and now they can't hit with runners in scoring position. 00:02:32 Speaker 3: How many things can continue to pile on? 00:02:36 Speaker 1: What this road trip looked like to me is it looked like a road trip where we had all of the Mariners problems that we've seen all season long, and they somehow got amplified even more. Where there are just people I think are really starting to get fed up with some of the problems this team is having because they're things that should, in theory, be able to be fixed. It's not a roster flop. People get frustrated. The Marrior can't hit left handed pitching, ironically, except for Sunday, in which they crushed a left handed pitcher somehow, some way, But that's more of a roster construction thing. Yeah, you had bad luck with Rob Refsnyder. Your stars aren't hitting as much as you'd want them to. But overall, the Mariners are really left handed heavy, so you know the hitting lefties is not going to be their strength. But all these other things totally preventable, totally fixable, And we're almost one hundred games into the season. Not only are these problems still here, but they keep getting worse. 00:03:29 Speaker 2: Like it's not April, this is the middle of July and it continues to pop up. Where do we start with this road trip? I mean, obviously Friday is going to get talked about. I'm trying to think about where we want to start with all this, because really this is about the Rays series where they did win on Sunday and they scored a bunch of runs, and you won one game on this road trip like clap it up, but otherwise another just horrendous. 00:03:57 Speaker 1: I haven't been less excited for like a series salvaging win then I had for this one. 00:04:00 Speaker 3: No, I mean, and we kept our word. We did not watch any of the series. We boy gott it. 00:04:05 Speaker 1: No, we don't. We're here in Philadelphia. We're gonna have a really fun time here for All Star week. Like, so as we're recording here on Sunday, all the players are getting in as well and a lot of the other people participating in the All Star Game. Do you know what's funny? 00:04:18 Speaker 3: You know who's not here, Dan Wilson? 00:04:21 Speaker 1: Why not? 00:04:23 Speaker 3: I don't know, it's super funny? Whise not? 00:04:24 Speaker 2: Oh wait, because he decided it was time for Edward Bizarre to pitch back in Game seven in October. And now John Schneider is here managing the American League and not him. Huh you ever think he'll be sitting on his couch watching All Star Week. It's like, well, that could have been me. Maybe I should have gone to Munno's. Huh that was a mistake. 00:04:41 Speaker 1: Could Could you imagine if Dan was actually coming to manage the All Star Game after that road trip? Like seriously, I can't. I literally can't sit here and picture that. 00:04:56 Speaker 2: I'm trying to even think about what the right meme for that would be. 00:05:00 Speaker 3: I don't know. 00:05:03 Speaker 2: I don't know if I can think of one on the spot. Yeah, it would be a pretty brutal. Look where he comes in to Philly ready to manage the All Star Game as they just lost five of six games embarrassingly on a road trip. You're under five hundred, You're a game and a half back of the Rangers in the Al West the middle of July, there's like sixty games ago. 00:05:20 Speaker 1: It's the same reason why I didn't want any more Mariners to make the All Star Game, Like, not only do most of these guys not deserve to make the All Star Game because they haven't had a good enough first half. What does an All Star Game do for you for like what the Mariners problems are, because that's what we're talking about. We're talking about the Mariners problems. How does making and playing in an All Star Game fix any one of the Mariners problems? And if the effort is being spent on the All Star Game instead of being spent to fix these glaring Mariners issues, then I think these priorities are mixed up. It's a great marketing event here. Mayors don't need marketing. They need to play better baseball. 00:05:55 Speaker 2: The only guy that's gonna be here for the Mariners will not be on the team next year. 00:05:59 Speaker 1: No, most likely not, so speaking of him, let's go to Friday's game. We can walk through game. Well. I guess Friday's game is the one that gets the most attention. So let's go to Friday's game. The sequence with Randy Rose Arena in the fifth inning where he is jogging after the ball in foul territory doesn't catch it. Luis Castillo gives up a home run on the next pitch. Epitomizes twenty twenty six Maritors baseball more than anything I've ever seen. 00:06:25 Speaker 2: Where do you want to start again? This is not a talent thing. 00:06:30 Speaker 3: Randy A. 00:06:31 Speaker 2: Rose Arena giving up on a fly ball hit into foul ground that he absolutely could have gotten to do. 00:06:38 Speaker 3: What do you even say? What is there to say? 00:06:41 Speaker 1: Like? 00:06:42 Speaker 3: Stop? 00:06:43 Speaker 2: Stop not running like hustle after the ball. 00:06:48 Speaker 1: The Mariners lead the league in plays that would get you benched by your high school coach. Yes, yeah, Randy Rose Reina wouldn't get to play for like a week in high school baseball if he did that, like and then the thing after the game. Really it pissed me off a little bit. It really did. Not only were Dan Wilson, Randy rose Arena, and Louis Castillo all saying different things to the media after the game. Dan said, oh, Randy's hamstring is hurting. Randy said, oh, my hamstring's not hurting. And then Luis Castillo, who per multiple reporters, was glaring at Randy after that, as he should because Louis Castile was about to get an out and said he gave up a home run to Cedric Mullins said, oh yeah, no, I wasn't getting I wasn't staring at Randy. I was just pissed at myself. 00:07:31 Speaker 2: It's like, okay, why don't we translate, Dan, I got news for you, buddy. Randy does not have a heard hamstring. He just admitted, or well maybe he does. 00:07:40 Speaker 3: I shouldn't. 00:07:40 Speaker 2: I shouldn't definitively, someone here's not telling the truth. Well no, so let's let's say this as usual. Dan Wilson's not going to say anything, but Randy and Rose Arena should have gone after that ball. If Randy's healthy enough to play, he should be healthy enough to go catch the ball. And by the way, Luis, I know you're not going to say it publicly, Yes, you were staring down Randy Rose Arena. Like we might not have watched every pitch this series, but like we still go back and watch the condensed game. Guys, we're still following live, like on Twitter and on the game day app. Like all the videos and pictures surfaced of Louis staring at Randy, he was staring at Randy for good. And by the way, Luise, I don't blame you. You have every right to be mad at Randy in that situation, because that's not a lack of physical defensive ability. 00:08:29 Speaker 3: That's a lack of effort. 00:08:30 Speaker 1: There's two things with the post game that really pissed me off. Number one, do you know what was lacking from all three of them? 00:08:37 Speaker 3: Oh, I can tell you to you it was accountability. 00:08:40 Speaker 1: Not a single person postgame to the media that was written in an article or talked about said, just said these words. Randy rose Reina needs to catch that fly ball. Not a single person that is a problem. 00:08:54 Speaker 3: Yes, that's a problem. 00:08:55 Speaker 1: No one, It doesn't even need to be the exact words, just say it in some way. It's like, we just need to be better on defense. That's all Dan needs to say. We need to be better on defense. For saying that, sure, you know what, if that's it, you. 00:09:06 Speaker 2: Don't have to call out Randy if you really don't want to, even though everything was centered around him. We need to clean it up on the defensive side of the ball. You could just say that, but Dan made an excuse. Randy essentially was like, eh, Like Randy didn't even really make an excuse. He was essentially just like, oh, well, I actually sorry, he did make an excuse. Because what Randy's words were after the game was I have to keep myself healthy for one hundred and sixty two games. So he's like, there's actually a reason I didn't get to that ball. I was looking out for a long term effect on what on one play, mid mid run to that baseball, you're thinking, Oh, wait, I better not hurt myself. 00:09:49 Speaker 3: Dude. 00:09:50 Speaker 2: If you're too injured to be out there, then you shouldn't be out there. But you're not too injured to be out there, so you got to make the play. 00:09:56 Speaker 1: That was the second thing that pissed me off. What was the keyword in there that he said? Me myself? That's what he said, not team myself. I need to look out for the team. No, I need to look out for myself. Oh that seems like a problem. 00:10:08 Speaker 3: Oh that's weird. 00:10:09 Speaker 2: The Scott Boris client and his walk here saying I'm looking out for myself. 00:10:13 Speaker 3: Huh. Oh, that would never happen. 00:10:15 Speaker 1: It seems like a really, really bad way to go about things. When a team is looking like the Mariners do, and they look discombobulated and out of sorts, and they're not hitting, and the energy of the team seems bad, and Randy Rosorena is not looking like he's giving one hundred percent effort. Well, that doesn't really give me good vibes for the rest of the season. I'll tell you that. No. 00:10:35 Speaker 3: By the way, I. 00:10:36 Speaker 2: Know you talked about they lead the league and plays they'll get you benched in high school, Dude, I think most managers bench said player for making a play like that. In the big leagues, it doesn't have to be for a week. Maybe it's just for the rest of the game. 00:10:50 Speaker 3: But I am. 00:10:51 Speaker 2: Shocked there was again no repercussions for Randy doing what he was doing, because, by the way, if his hamstring such a problem, then he wouldn't have been in line up the rest of that game. They would have pulled him out because he was too injured, and they wouldn't have been in the lineup the rest of the weekend. But no, Randy's in the lineup the rest of the weekend. By the way, he hit a home run on Sunday that helped lead him to the win. So clearly he's okay enough to be playing. Clearly he's okay enough to be traveling to Philly and playing the All Star Game, but he's not okay enough to run after a ball that you easily could have gotten to and just decided to start trotting, because he started trotting for like four or five good steps only for the ball the land like totally within. 00:11:31 Speaker 3: Range of where he was. 00:11:34 Speaker 2: I mean, and if you're in that clubhouse, like, what are you saying to yourself when you watch. 00:11:40 Speaker 1: That's a that's a great question. And these are all things that we just being here in Philadelphia and not in Tampa and not in the clubhouse, we just like, we won't know. We will try and ask around and see what you know for people who are there, what a kind of vibe check is on how people reacted to that. But man, I'm telling you, like, even if they're not going to drag Randy publicly, how is there not just like some of the leaders on this team come up to Randy and be like like that just can't happen. That just can't do it. 00:12:07 Speaker 3: I mean, who are the leaders on the team, Like, because the. 00:12:10 Speaker 1: Cow so think of is not there, which is a problem. 00:12:12 Speaker 2: So let me get to that. So let's think about who the team leaders are. You have cal who unfortunately has really really struggled through the first half. I can't speak for cal So, I don't know how he's feeling. About still currently in this very moment, being a vocal leader when you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing at the plate. Maybe he feels awkward about it, Maybe he feels a little bit odd to really speak up. Also, there is a chance, and again we cannot know for certain, we're speculating here because we can't speak for Cal, there may be a chance he's now a little hands off about trying to, you know, get in Randy's grill, given what happened in March. 00:12:49 Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Like like if Cal is going to give feedback to Randy, is Randy reciprocating or is it going is he just like meth. 00:12:57 Speaker 3: Or is it going to start another brewhaha? 00:12:59 Speaker 1: Which which is where not having Julio in that clubhouse at this moment is not not great. 00:13:04 Speaker 2: Right because Julio's the other leader, and we've seen points this year where Julio really steps in and gets on Randy's rear end and really like remember the play in Kansas City where he made another defensive blunder and Julio got up to the plate late and the reason reportedly was like he was having a real talk with Randy. What does that say? What does it say. Okay, there's two ways you can look at this. It does say a lot about who Julio is to have the confidence at twenty five years old now to be a leader on the team and. 00:13:35 Speaker 3: Speak up like that. 00:13:36 Speaker 2: But at the same time, like we're talking about we needed, like the Mariners needed Julio there to grill Randy for that, or the Mariners needed Julio to really get on Randy's ass back in Kansas City. Randy's thirty thirty one years old, Julio's twenty five. You have a guy half a decade younger than Randy being his babysitter. 00:13:55 Speaker 3: What are we doing? 00:13:58 Speaker 1: I don't know, dude. 00:14:01 Speaker 2: Again, you said it in your reaction on social media. I'll say it here. This road trip felt a lot like the twenty twenty four road trip that eventually led to Scott's service being let go. When they went to Detroit, when they went to Pittsburgh, and they went to LA and you essentially knew before almost every single one of those games, especially once you got past the Detroit series, Oh, this team has no chance. Yeah, like they're gonna lose. When they got boots on the ground in LA two years ago, they're like. 00:14:28 Speaker 1: Oh, it's over. 00:14:29 Speaker 3: It's it's over before it started. 00:14:30 Speaker 2: Yeah, that's how it felt going into Tampa this week. Miraclely they like by a miracle, they won one game, but it just felt like it was over before it started. 00:14:39 Speaker 1: I want to dive more into that, but before that, let's pause here for an ad. 00:14:44 Speaker 2: Let's compare two players. They're making similar contracts, but you have to pick one guy to be in your lineup. Player one hit three hundred. He had an eight to forty ops and a one forty one WRC plus, forty one percent better than the league average. Player two hit one eighty five. He had a five to sixty three ops and a sixty three WRC plus. 00:15:02 Speaker 3: So who would you pick? 00:15:03 Speaker 2: The clear answers Player A right, because player A is twenty twenty five dominant canzone and player B is twenty twenty two. Head to cozyearth dot com and use our code Marine for an exclude lusive twenty percent off. That's code Marine Arne for an exclusive twenty percent off. And if you see a post purchase survey mention that you heard about Cozy Earth right here, So you did say the Mariners road trip. This road trip felt a lot like that twenty twenty four to one, and it felt it in a lot of ways. Like we've said, lifeless a lot this season with the Mariners. I don't think it has felt more like that than it has on this road trip. And they've had some bad road trips this year, especially when they've traveled to the East Coast, but this one stands out more than the rest of them do because of where they're at in the season, and it's people are like, it's not early anymore. You can't blame that you're not in sync yet, that you don't feel comfortable at the plate, like this is when you should be starting to play your best baseball and instead the Mariners are playing their worst baseball at this stretch. And as I said at the beginning of the podcast, I think people were just kind of fed up. They're fed up at this point. So which leads me to this, how are the Mariners going to stop this from happening going forward? Because what we see are things getting worse, not getting better. 00:18:09 Speaker 2: Yes, do you have any ideas? Why don't you throw it out there for the people? How is this going to get better? Other than your stars have to hang, your stars have to hit, because that covers up a lot of issues. By the way, it's not like this team didn't have issues last year, but a whole lot was covered up by a sixty home run season from your damn near MVP catcher. Now you have stars not hitting, and there's a lot more getting exposed. 00:18:34 Speaker 1: Like at some point there needs to be something that lights a fire with this team, and like we got to figure out what it is. The Mariners need to figure out what it is. Like everyone in the organization needs to go home this All Star break, not come here to Philadelphia. No one else is allowed to come to to Philadelphia. I swear it should not. I just don't know how you could celebrate after that, don't I don't understand. You're not in first place, you're dressed, underperforming. How in the world could you come here and have a fun time. Well, I can't imagine how that's possible. 00:19:05 Speaker 3: Nobody else is going good. 00:19:06 Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly as it should be. 00:19:08 Speaker 3: Now nobody else got invited. 00:19:10 Speaker 2: Look, if Bryce Miller got invited, I'm sure he's not gonna say no, And I couldn't blame him for that. I don't know if I can quite say to that level that because that is like it means a lot to those guys that are especially first timers. But am I complaining that no other Mariners are not coming. 00:19:26 Speaker 3: No, I'm not. 00:19:27 Speaker 2: They need to go home and reset and seriously gear up for the second half. Yeah, by the way, we didn't even touch on Saturday's game because you know what continues to not ever get better Dan Wilson's decision making, because then you get to Saturday's game, and while again a lot of problems are being caused by a total lack of offense, right now you get to wait for it, wait for it. Stop you stop me. If you've ever heard this, Oh my god, I can't talk. This is how this is how pissed off I'm getting. Stop me if you've ever heard this before. Another Dan Wilson blunder with his in game managing. I mean, he gets to the seventh inning on Saturday, and he has got a chance to then pull Logan Gilbert out of the game with at the plate, with Rand at the plate, left on left with Gabe Spire, keep the score at Bay, keep it within a run. He goes out to the mound, Logan talks him into staying to keeping himself in the game. Which, look, if you're Logan and you're a competitor, of course you want to stay in but Logan's also had his issues. The third time through the order this year, as we know, it has been a struggle for him. Dan lets Logan like talk him out of pulling him out of the game. He keeps Logan in. It is followed up by a double and an intentional walk. Then Dan goes to the to the bullpen. He gets Gabe Spire. But he gets Spire at a time where clearly they're gonna go flip the lefty for the righty because you have Cedric Mullins at the plate who has not had a good year. He's not good against lefties, So they go up and get Ryan Volaide, who you know, it's not like he's carved out much of a name for himself at this point in his career. But and look, we know Gabe is a high leverage reliever that can get both lefties and righties out. But he's but he is better against lefties. He dominates lefties. They weren't gonna take a Randa out of that game. He's one of their stars. He was not going anywhere. So instead of getting the left on left, you go and wait to put Gabe Spier into the game until after a double and an intentional walk have ensued. 00:21:30 Speaker 3: You let the matchup. Again. 00:21:32 Speaker 2: We talk about how Dan plays so much chess and never checkers, or sorry, so much checkers, never chess because he always is thinking one move ahead instead of multiple. Well, you got like Kevin cash is playing checkers on you, and it worked because you folded right into his plan. He got the righty up, you got left on right with Spiro and valaide and two base runners on and two base runners on because he was convinced that Logan needed to stay in the game despite having a lot of proper a third time through the order. All year games, fire gives up a home run, game gets out a hand like again, I know that if the offense was hitting a lot of this wouldn't be as much of a conversation. But again, man, you want to talk about the things that have to get better. How many episodes in a row do we have to talk about these decisions that kill them from the dugout in the middle of the game, And it's like it never like we're we're near two years into the Dan Wilson era. This has not gotten better at all. 00:22:29 Speaker 1: And there's just no confidence it's gonna get better. At all. So that leads into this conversation of how the Mariners are gonna get better in this second half and what they're gonna do and what they're gonna take away from this road trip that they can't do. Do you have any ideas? 00:22:46 Speaker 2: I mean, again, your stars have to hit. Yeah, you better go execute at the trade deadline, and it's not a good trade deadline market, but you better go get a couple of pieces that can really help. 00:22:56 Speaker 1: I gotta wonder at this point, like people can have their thoughts about calling for people's jobs, and I totally understand that, and I just want to kind of ask the Mariners this question. At what point do you have the conversation, Like, if you're going to look at this in an objective way and you need to turn around your season and we're talking to Phillies fans, by the way, who have an interim manager and are doing pretty good this season. They managed to turn around their vibes as well, at what point do you have the conversation. 00:23:24 Speaker 2: I mean, again, if we're just talking about the potential of the conversation being had about a change in the dugout, I mean, is the conversation not happening during this four day break at All Star Week. I'm not saying that's the final decision they come to. We don't know. Is the conversation not happening? Think about it, man, Just lay out the facts. The Seattle Mariners, despite having the second highest World Series odds in Major League Baseball entering the season, are currently under five hundred at the All Star break, a game and a half out of the worst a West we've ever seen, Paired with a disastrous one to five road trip, your players looking unmotivated. The clubhouse seems like a mess at times. You have people all over the map in terms of on different pages. There doesn't seem to be a lot of accountability being held up, Like do you not have to have the conversation? Because this is not simply the Mariners are losing because their strikeout rate is too high. A coaching staff can't do anything about that. When there are all these problems that are coming to the forefront very loudly. Do you not have to entertain the conversation? I don't see how the conversations not being had. It may not be the decision they come to. They may ultimately decide that they're just gonna roll with it. 00:24:46 Speaker 1: It doesn't sound like that it's going to be the decision. 00:24:49 Speaker 2: I mean, we don't know, we have no idea, but I look after a road trip like that and a first half like that and a lot of the problems we already know exists with this manager, especially with what happens in game all the time and the decision making. Don't you like have to, like at least have the conversation. I'm not saying you have to come to the conclusion, but I am asking doesn't the conversation at least have to exist. 00:25:15 Speaker 1: I think you need to go over every single option in these four days because there's now that the draft is over, the Mariners have nothing but time on their hands. They're gonna be signing some draft picks. Maybe they'll host of one of the workouts at Tea Mobile Park for these guys, but that's it. Now you're focused on the trade deadline and you need to take a good, long, hard look at your roster, your entire roster, not just the players, and you need to say, well, we need to win this division this year. Not winning the division this year is unacceptable, dude. 00:25:45 Speaker 2: Well forget that, I mean it is, but they missed the playoffs in a year like this. 00:25:50 Speaker 1: I mean, dude, the Red Sox are breeding down their neck right now. 00:25:54 Speaker 2: The Red Sox, yeah, dead in the water a couple of weeks ago, have now ripped off something like fourteen of sixteen and are breathing down your neck. Like you said, the Mariners missed the playoffs in this year's American League. 00:26:07 Speaker 3: Blow it up, dude, I'm serious. 00:26:09 Speaker 1: This roster, just especially with all these reports coming out about the Mariner's potential trade deadline acquisitions and that if they're not trading major pieces off their big league roster, which there's a report that came out today from Bob Nightingale here on Sunday that will be for Wednesday's episode. So if you're hoping to hear us talk about that, we'll talk about that on Wednesday. But the TLDR is, it sounds like if the Mariners are not trading big league pieces off their big league roster, the return they could get at the trade deadline will be limited. If they're not going to get a bunch of guys at the trade deadline, that leaves you in a position of we need to wait and hope this gets better. There is nothing I'm watching with the Seattle Mariners team that I'm convinced at this point is just going to quote get better. I besides maybe Cal hitting a few more home runs in the second half, I don't see it. And if someone has a different argument, I would love to be presented with evidence that would suggest that fact. 00:27:06 Speaker 2: I guess the only thing I can throw out there is you would expect Julio in the second half to really get going, because he often does. But you can't guarantee anything. There could be a year where, unfortunately Julio doesn't have a scorching hot nine hundred ops in the second half. I'm not saying that's what's gonna happen. I'm not saying it's not histories which suggests he's going to do that, But you just don't know. 00:27:27 Speaker 3: Other than that. 00:27:28 Speaker 2: Look at the episode we just did a couple days ago where we laid out the ten things that have to get better, which is a lot. 00:27:33 Speaker 3: It was Cal. 00:27:35 Speaker 2: It was Julio has to get hot, Donovan has to get off the il, Brash has to get off the il. The base running and the situational baseball has to get way better. The decision making has to get way better. You've got to make a damn decision on your rotation. No more piggybacking. Like there's a few other things we didn't even highlight in there too. So many things have to vastly turn around in the second half for this to all go right, for this team to actually get to the place where it needs to be, a lot has to go right. 00:28:06 Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, I totally, I totally agree. We'll wrap up this podcast with a few more Mariner's thoughts as we close out the first half, but before we get to that, let's pause here for an ad. They focus on high quality essentials that look and feel amazing. Think breathable linen and soft organic cotton, well made basics, but without the luxury markup. Is there anything else we need to get to with this road trip before we move on? Do we get all our thoughts out? Do we get our ven session out as best as we could? Well? 00:30:56 Speaker 1: I think we talked about everything Marlins related, and we talked about most of the stuff. Well, I'm it is a bummer here on Sunday that Emerson Hancock got hit in the hand. Thankfully, the x rays are negative, so he left after an inning in a third or inning in two thirds of the Mariners managed to only allow two runs to the race, which was a positive, A slight, a very tiny slight positive. You're on Sunday that the Mariners found some offense, uh, and their bullpen was able to pitch very well, which is great. But I am really hoping that within two weeks of the second half starting, the Mariners are back to a full ballpen and that we're not running with a six man rotation anymore. 00:31:30 Speaker 2: No, by the way, you have to make a decision on that pretty soon. Herea the All Star breaks gonna end. What are you gonna do with your six guys in the rotation? Yeah, you gotta make a decision. 00:31:42 Speaker 1: Like my overall thinking of just seeing like being being. You know, we're always at the ballpark and we're around a lot of people, and lots of people say things, and the more I I would say, I ingest information from people and then watch the team, whether it be at home or on the road, and just hearing hearing how some things are different this year with a lot of new coaches on the staff for the Marrors this year, and then just seeing how they play on the road, it just it just kind of puts like a kind of a twisted knot in my stomach about things changing without other things changing. I'll say that that some things were a lot better last year than they were this year, Like some of the simplest things you could possibly imagine were better last year than they are this year. And some of the feedback from a lot of different people kind of mixes up to me that it just doesn't feel like right now things will get better if they stay as there are. 00:32:48 Speaker 2: Again, I don't know what changes they're going to make other than what they do with the deadline and potentially a Kate Anderson Ryan Sloan call up, which probably isn't going to be for at least another few weeks to pitch in a bullpen that you hope is competing for a postseason. But does the conversation change with Caden Sloan and what you do with them up like in the big leagues or not in the big leagues this season if they fall out of contention. I don't know, Like, would you put those guys in a bullpen if you're not competing for a postseason spot? 00:33:17 Speaker 1: Hmmm, that's a good question. Well, they'll be competing for a postseason spot. And no matter what I mean, the league it's so bad that's probably true. They could be three games under in September and still be in the hunt. I'm guessing probably. So I feel like that is not as much of the discussion, but a lot of discussion now comes from I think really all three levels of the Mariners. It's gonna be on some of the players in that clubhouse too, as Dan has handed over the keys of the clubhouse to the players and that's what they like so much about him. It's going to be on the players to you know, correct themselves and themselves and have some accountability there. It's gonna be on the coaching staff to do what they're hired to do and make try and improve and get the cleanest version of this baseball team out there. And it's gonna be on the front office who oversees everything else. Like they they are, they're at the top of the food chain, and ultimately they get to make the decisions here. Uh. And if the Mariners winner lose, that will go right back to them. It's on the owners too, Yeah, I mean this it's their team. They run everything. They're in charge of the front office. By the way, we'll talk about it more on Wednesday. But again, if you're going to entertain a Luis Castillo trade, if you're the Mariner's owners, like, are you gonna agree to eat that money? I can't help but wonder if that's a part of a reason he hasn't been traded already, because because they don't they don't want to have to eat money for somebody who's not on the team. Like make like, you've got to make the decision of again, what is the best thing for your baseball team. 00:34:43 Speaker 3: It might be to deal Castillo. 00:34:45 Speaker 2: Ultimately, at the end of the day, what are you going to do about what is happening with your team on the baseball field, Because again, you're right the front office makes a lot of the baseball decisions, but in terms of action, none of that happens with that out real discussions and ultimate approval from the owners, like are you gonna approve action being taken no matter what it may be like for the betterment of this baseball team. And there's a lot of people that need to make some real decisions. And over the next four days, I hope we're having some real conversations, like you said, all across the board, players, coaches, front office, owners. 00:35:22 Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a lot for the Mariners to reflect on during this All Star break, so hopefully they use that time off wisely. We get in on a bit more of a positive note as we are here in Philly. We were at the Futures game today and we watched Kate Anderson and Ryan Sloan throwing that game. Awesome for them. I gotta say Kate had a failure of an inning. 00:35:41 Speaker 3: I mean, it's sad. He actually let up a hit. 00:35:43 Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll a hit that went all of three inches onto the grass and right field. 00:35:48 Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was a bummer. It was a real bomb he gave it up to also, it was it Hazeus Monde, the number one prospect in baseball. Haesu's Monde bomb unacceptable. 00:35:57 Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's just totally unacceptable. Good though, to get to start that futures game. He totally deserves it. He's been the best pitcher in the minor leagues this season. And then Ryan Sloan came out of the bullpen. It's funny. We ran into Ryan outside the Marriotte here in downtown Philly and he was like, what were his words? I think you were like, h I'm not even sure how I'm supposed to prepare for tomorrow. I don't usually come out of the bullpen for one inn one inning. Like It's like, I don't know, but fun. 00:36:24 Speaker 3: He might have to get more used to it. Maybe we'll be doing more of that in September. 00:36:27 Speaker 1: Exactly, was like, hey, buckle up. We didn't even throw that idea to him at all, right, we should have. 00:36:32 Speaker 3: He knows. I'm sure. 00:36:33 Speaker 1: I'm sure he does. Is like, oh, this is the first of many relief appearances for you this. 00:36:37 Speaker 3: Year potentially, But no, he was. He was in a good mood. 00:36:40 Speaker 2: He was he was excited to be in Philly and and I think he knows pitching in the futures game is cool, he said, Look at the end of the day, like, you know, everybody's just a hitter. Like, you know, everyone's just a hitter. 00:36:52 Speaker 1: I'm six five, two thirty I throw almost one hundred miles an hour with wipeout stuff. I mean, they're all just hitters. 00:36:58 Speaker 3: I mean, but that's a mind you have to have. 00:37:00 Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, I mean you have to have the ultimate confidence in yourself, which he Otherwise it doesn't work. 00:37:05 Speaker 2: Which he does again, Like we were asking him about, like, oh, like, how's Double A treating you like, you know, excited for the futures game. It's like, yeah, it'll all be cool. Adjustment's been good, but you know, like at the end of the day, like he was just talking about, you know, you don't have to overthink stuff hitters or hitters like attack with the approach that you know you're confident in and ultimately you should you know, you should be okay. And I'd say Ryan Sloan's been very much better than okay this year. So it was cool both of them through scoreless innings, neither of them gave up a run. Not that a performance in a futures game does anything at all to your stock it's nothing more than a good marketing event for the prospects. But you know, it's it's an honor to pitch in the game. People very much have their eyes set on those two Mariners prospect arms. So to have them get to Philly and have a little bit of success, it's cool. 00:37:50 Speaker 1: Can someone remind me again why they don't play sick nine innings? 00:37:54 Speaker 3: Not enough arms? Maybe? 00:37:56 Speaker 1: I mean they're making pitch and changes in the middle of the inning today. 00:37:59 Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know what the story there is. 00:38:01 Speaker 1: They could I don't hear me out, hear me out, just play nine innings, Yeah, they could, and then everyone gets a full inning. 00:38:07 Speaker 3: Yeah, like the breakout games in spring training. 00:38:10 Speaker 1: Yeah, I that I don't understand. It's like, oh, we don't have enough pictures. I don't know, dude, how many minor league teams are there? 00:38:16 Speaker 3: A lot? 00:38:16 Speaker 1: Get some more pictures. How hard is this? Come on Major League Baseball? So that was fun. I love the ballpark in Philly. Ballpark and Philly has been great. It's just kind of in the middle of nowhere, which is a bummer. It is essentially right in the middle of a parking lot next to the Eagles Stadium into the Sixers and Flyers Arena. Otherwise, it was nice. It has some similarities to t Mobile Park. 00:38:40 Speaker 2: Citizens Bank is really nice. Maybe it's not in a perfect location, but it is a really nice park with a really nice view. It's easy to get around. I'm a big fan of Citizens Bank. I've been once before this week, and I'm a fan. 00:38:54 Speaker 1: And we've run into some Mariners fans here in Philadelphia, So shout out to all of you if you're listening to that right now. We just ran into some on the lobby here of our hotel, which are awesome. And we've seen a few out round here in Philadelphia, not quite as many as I may. Maybe there'll be some more here. Maybe there'll be some more here in the next couple of days. Should I tell them about the rule we have when we see Mariners fans away from the state of Washington. 00:39:16 Speaker 3: Yeah, go for it. 00:39:17 Speaker 2: I think I think we've talked about this before, but go ahead. But we might have talked about it this last year too. So our rule is when we see Mariners fans like away from Seattle and they're wearing Mariners gear, if they're wearing a Ken Griffy junior jersey more often than not. Loud and I were saying, all right, that's not a Mariners fan, so we're not. 00:39:34 Speaker 3: We're not. 00:39:35 Speaker 1: Unless he comes up to us and tries to talk to us, we're not gonna be like, oh, hey, go Mariners. 00:39:39 Speaker 2: Well, mostly because we've tried that in the past with people in Griffy jerseys, because you see Mariners gear way away from your home state, you want to connect with somebody, and then they'll say, oh, I'm not a Marinons fan. I just have the jersey, and you're like, oh, and every time, yeah, it's a griffy jersey. So if somebody has a Griffy jersey, we don't really bother. It's like, oh, you just like the jersey. You just like Griffy, which is fine, but you're probably not a Marinons fan. 00:40:03 Speaker 1: Meanwhile, we talked about the story we had in Colorado where we were walking around the concourse at coors Field and someone has a oh. It was like, oh, a Mariner's jersey. Look, Oh that's cool. It's a oh, a Jared kell Nick jersey. Yeah, that's a that's a Mariner's fan right there. 00:40:18 Speaker 3: And what was great about that, I have a kell Nick Jersey too. 00:40:21 Speaker 1: Yeah, of course, yeah, of course you do. So, yeah, that's been fun. We've really enjoyed being here at All Star where if you are coming the next two days sent us a DM love to say hello to hello to some people who fly all the way in from Seattle to Philadelphia as well. So that should that should be a lot of fun. And we don't really have anything Mariners to root for in any of these events, not really. 00:40:43 Speaker 2: I mean, Randy will probably get one at bat. 00:40:47 Speaker 1: I'd rather he just rest his hamstring. 00:40:51 Speaker 3: What ham string? 00:40:54 Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean again he was on the il, but again you're playing the field. 00:41:00 Speaker 3: You didn't sit out Saturday and Sunday. 00:41:02 Speaker 1: I don't know, man, This is where I've gotten to the Mariners, where I say, the worst possible thing we can as podcasters, I don't know, lyle. 00:41:12 Speaker 3: They're leaving a lot of questions up in the air. They really are they. 00:41:15 Speaker 1: Yeah, they are. Hopefully they take these next few days to sit down and reflect and we have some solid things to talk about once the Giant series rolls around. 00:41:25 Speaker 3: Let's hope, Let's really really hope. All right. 00:41:28 Speaker 2: That just about wraps up this edition of the Marine Layer Podcast. You guys know the drill.
